Why we lost, why we will continue to lose…..

Now that it is obvious that Norm Coleman has lost the Senate race in Minnesota I have come out of hibernation.  I made several diary entries last election cycle, but when it became painfully obvious that we were going to get a butt kicking I decided to pull back and watch.   On election night I was astonished at how badly and thoroughly we were defeated.

If we are going to take the majority ever again we have to know and fully understand what transpired over the past four years.  We have to understand that the opposition was smarter, tougher, meaner, more disciplined, and richer then we were. Above all we have to understand and come to grips with the indisputable fact that liberals, Ivy league graduates and Democrats hate us with a passion.

We have to understand that the media hates us with a passion.  That we have no voice in the media the absolute best we can hope for is fair and balanced.

We made so many mistakes commencing in 2005 that I am amazed that we have anyone left in Congress.  The first major mistake was made by George Bush in placing Karl Rove in the White House.  The mindset that makes someone a great campaign strategist is not suited for advocating policy within the White House.

Rove should have been placed as the head of the RNC.   President Bush should have followed is father’s example when Bush 41 placed Lee Atwater as the head of the the RNC.   Every Democrat in Washington was terrified of Atwater.  They knew he would fight.

The next major mistake was for some reason known only to God and the idiots that made it was wanting to fix Social Security.  Only Nixon could go to China, and only a Democrat can fix Social Security.  I told friends of mine at the time that was a terrible decision and would kill his Presidency.

Third for some reason known only to the White House and the people there they absolutely refused to respond to the accusations and charges being leveled at them by Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.   Where I come from anyone calls me a liar and that beceoms an automatic invitation tp go outside and resolve this behind the building.  When you don’t respond the accusation becomes fact.  Worse if you don’t respond you appear to be weak and guilty.

The RNC and the White House over the past four years became the most cowardly organizations I have ever witnessed in my 40 plus years of being involed in American Politics.  They took the “Rope a Dope” strategy of Muhammad Ali to all new lows.   I know this much if anyone came to me with a CV that said they worked in the communication offices of the RNC or the White House over the past four years I would never hire them.   The sad thing is that they will all find employment and they shouldn’t.

Hubert Humphrey, the happy warrior, in an unguarded moment said, “I hate Republicans”.  It is time we came to grips with this fact.  I have people that I know who are Democrats and I have even worked with them.  They will when queried say, “present company excluded, I just don’t like Republicans”.  Democrats hate us and they will do whatever is necessary to defeat us.

I am a Conservative when it comes to foreign policy and national defense.   On domestic issues I know them, understand them, and have thoughts on them but to me they do not stir me as foreign and defense issues do.

I do know this if they have an R behind their name I do not care if they are pro or con to abortion.  I do not care if they are for or against gay marriage.  I do not care if they want us to unilaterally disarm.  I care if they have an R.   I also care that they vote for a Conservative Speaker of the House and a Conservative Majority Leader of the Senate.  That is all that matters.  That is all that counts.

We lost because we spent too much time “eating our young.”    Some of these talk show hosts who were not going to endorse John McCain and sat on the sidelines such as Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity until Sarah Palin was announced might as well have been on the payroll of the DNC.  It was a stupidity beyond measure.  When the first Supreme Court Justice is appointed by the Messiah I hope Mr. Limbaugh and Mr. Hannity will be very proud of their creation.

I am retired from the Army.  If I had a subordinate officer come to me who suffered defeats as the GOP did in 2006 and 2008 I would hand him my sidearm and tell him to do the honrable thing.

How John Boehner and Mitch McConnell are still the leaders of the GOP in the House and the Senate are beyond me.  They are two incompetents who do not have the backbones to fight.  They are way too comfortable in the roles of going along to get along.  No one has ever won a campaign of any sort, military, political, or marketing with cowards in their leadership.

The worse thing that Boehner and McConnell represent is that even if they had the nerve and backbone to fight they have no credibility.   They both voted for the worse piece of legislation to come out of the congress in the past 100 years, the bailouts of the financial industry.   Has anyone else noticed that everytime either of them speak of the bailouts being proposed anyone quoting them finishes up by saying how they both voted for Bush’s bailout.  They do not have the moral, or ethical standing to criticize anything proposed by the Messiah’s administration.

The most egregious of them all is Mike Duncan.  How can anyone who did such a misrabale job as Chairman of the RNC still be in contention to run it again.  What is his campaign slogan, “vote me because I am not finished destroying the RNC?”   How about, “vote for me so I can finish my job making sure there are no elected Republicans in the Congress.”

These criticisms to me are not eating my young.  These criticism are made because I am Republican and I do not wish to see the party that I suppoted, and worked for over the past 44 years destroyed.   These three men will do just that.

What amazes me is that we have no voice in the media.  MSNBC and CNN are completely decicated to destroying the Republican party.  The same goes for the Tribune Company and the Times Corporation.  They have one single mission and that is to place the GOP in the trash bin of history.   If Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh want to do something for this country then put together the money people to buy these media outlets.   Each of them are bankrupt or soon will be and can be bought.  We have the ability to literally deny billions and billions of dollars worth of free advertising to the Democrat party.  We can level the playing field.

I will do a post tomorrow in regards to FOX.  They are accused of being a Conservative network, but I don’t see it.  More to come on FOX and its coverages.

If you have read this far thank you for tolerating my rant.  I am going to have more to say in the future.  I had somewhat retired from politics, but that was a mistake.  It is time to get back into this fray.

Agreed, But

VanishingNYRep Wednesday, January 14th at 9:22AM EST (link)

You have identified the major problems:
1) The Bush Adm refused to defend itself;
2) the GOP can get its message out through a hostile media; and
3) the conservatives are more concerned wirth purity than winning elections.

However, depsite all of the above, the GOP was competitive until the Stock Market crash, the 10 days in Sept when everyone was predicting another Great Depression and the economic meltdown. In such a time, the uninformed 20% that decides elections votes to oust the incumbent party (defined as the one holding the WH).

However. be of good cheer. At least now, the GOP and conservatives have talk radio, the internet and FOX News (however flawed it is, Fox at least gives air time to the GOP and conservatives without ridiculing them). This was not the case in 1976 or 1992.

The solution:must be on several levels:
1) use the internet to spread the unslanted news and conservative philosophy and be sure to expand the list of people contacted;
2) encourage Fox to continue and secure a conservative hispanic TV news station;
3) raise large amounts of money to advertise and publish so conservatives and the GOP are not dependent on the media for getting the message out;
4) continue to criticise the media for its bias, boycot their publications and TV shows until they dry up and blow away;
5) every office must be contested down to school board, village board and city council up through the state legislature and Congress. don’t let the Dem libs have a free ride.

Finally, never give up. The GOP and conservatives have been uin wrse shape than this and have come back.

1) continue

not sure I agree...

I do not agree with the premise that we were competitive until the economy tanked.

I live IN Virginia I was seeing the Messiah on TV on every channel at least once an hour. Some of the commercials were out and out lies. But they overwhelmed McCain. These commercials began in earnest during the GOP convention.

These commercials were all negative. There were so many of them that I was astounded by them. We lost because we had a candidate who would rather lose and stick to his word.

We lost because we had the better, the more honorable, the most honest candidate. We also had an idiot for a candidate. He accepted the tax payers money and refused to attack the messiah on Wright.

We were never going to win a campaign when we were being outspent 8 to 1. We lost this race when McCain unilaterally said yes to the taxpayer money for the campaign.

McCain was NOT the "better" candidate.

And I’m not even sold on your other two descriptions of him either.

Bottom line, we chose a guy who doesn’t have any core political beliefs. That is precursor to a devastating loss every time.

I see it and understand it and will not argue with you. He was a very flawed candidate. I liked him, but as I said I thought he was an idiot.

Hey, I live in AZ. Because of McCain we only have one US Senator (McCain represents the interests of the DC Beltway, not the People of AZ). And, I don’t like him one bit.

John McCain: "I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy ..."

Martin Knight Wednesday, January 14th at 7:39PM EST (link)

This was our 2008 candidate saying that at a Democratic function in a Presidential election year (2004).

So while I agree with much of what you wrote up there, the fact remains that we picked a bad candidate, someone who up until he won the nomination (and they turned on him) referred to the media as “my base.”

The real base he needed, why, he’d spent the last eight years delighting in stabbing them in the back in return for accolades from people who, as you also admit, hate our guts.

McCain and his co-called “moderate” boosters (many of whom ended up abandoning him for Obama) actually thought he could win based on the support of “Independents”, “moderates” and “Democrats.”

Fact is; an enthused base is very necessary for a campaign to succeed - and there was no way McCain could get that after the past eight years of “Bipartisan” betrayals.

Whose fault was all that?

Not Rush, Hannity or Ingraham - John S. McCain.

Sorry but this paragraph is just so wrong on so many levels...

The problem is that those with an R behind there name who break ranks on the issues you present would never vote for a Conservative Speaker or a Conservative Majority/Minority leader. In fact I would say that most of those “Republicans” wouldn’t even vote for a conservative presidential candidate such as Fred Thompson.

Newt Gingrich??

Jack Wednesday, January 14th at 8:12PM EST (link)

Newt Gingrich was the most conservative Speaker of the House Of Representatives in over a century. When he was elected first as the leader under Bob Michel and then as Speaker a lot of very liberal Republicans voted for him. They voted for him a total of 5 times for leadership positions.

Republicans such as Phil Crane, Nancy Johnson, and more liberals voted for him. Those liberals gave Newt the majority he needed. Since then we have lost all of those liberals in the North who voted for the very conservative representative from Georgia.

No the rank and file will do as they are led.

Ok Newt.....

Attack Mode Wednesday, January 14th at 8:18PM EST (link)

Now what did they do after Newt once the had the majority??? They went to work in order to ensure the rightward swing could be thwarted…like RMSP….once Newt was ousted they continued to go evermore liberal and squishy.

There are plenty of examples of those types of “Republicans being anything but loyal.

Yep ... they voted for him. To get a seat at the table.

Martin Knight Thursday, January 15th at 3:55AM EST (link)

There was no way after his leading them to their first victory in 40 years they could gather enough votes from the other members to vote for another “nice” (i.e. non-confrontational, conciliatory, compromising, cowed) Republican like Bob Michel - who would lead them back to the minority where they were more comfortable.

So, instead, they voted for him, and then went to create an organization, the RMSP, specifically for the purpose of undermining the very agenda that Newt and Co. used to get them out of the wilderness.

but...

Jack Thursday, January 15th at 6:47AM EST (link)

Newt was elected to replace Bob Michel before the Republicans took the House. Michel retired and Next moved from being the Whip to the leader and then to being Speaker.

Newt rose to power knocking off the Democrat Speakers of the House most notably Jim Wright for unethical behavior. That got him elected to the Whip position and from there he destroyed the Democrats. He was supported by the left for a long time within the GOP.

What killed the GOP was when Tom Delay’s indictment. That indictment led to the almost daily erosion of the GOP’s favorability numbers. Look at all of the polling data thatbrought us down.

We have no one with the cahones to take on Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid in this manner. If those two “conservatives” John Boehner and Mitch McConnell are not tossed out we are never getting out of the minority.

Jack

You're not contradicting me.

Martin Knight Thursday, January 15th at 7:47AM EST (link)

I know Michel was retiring at the end of 1994. Newt, as Whip, naturally succeeded him.

Note that as of the morning of 11/8/1994, not even Newt thought the GOP was going to have such a phenomenal Election Night. Michel himself, while expecting some gains, was far from expecting that a Republican was going to be sworn in as Speaker in January.

So you can imagine their horror when the results came in. It is what led to Nancy Johnson, Amo Houghton, Fred Upton, et al. to get together and start up the RMSP, specifically for the purpose of sabotaging the GOP under Gingrich’s agenda.

Agreed on most fronts

Except Social Security. Bush cowered on SS reform and therin lies that failure. He said “fix it”, they said “screw you,” and he walked away with his tail between his legs. All this, while having a Republican majority in Congress. President Bush is a good and honorable man, but his failure to take the Dems to task has been my biggest disappointment.

McCain probably would have been worse.

I think we’re right where we need to be as a party. BHO, Nancy, and Harry will have 2 years to run roughshod over freedom and prosperity. The best we can hope for is that Obama’s administration will be such a disaster that we will get an opporunity to remove the cowards on our side of the aisle and put some real conservatives in charge.

6eorge Jetson Wednesday, January 14th at 8:18PM EST (link)

To me, Bush’s biggest failing is the majority socialist sentiment of the country as his term ends. We can debate the attribution, but the undeniable fact is that it happened on his watch.

Let’s hope for a Cleusau-like outcome, in which Bush begets socialism/Obama/Pelosi/Reid, which in turn begets true conservatism.

Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are not responsible for McCain’s loss. Republicans are wholly responsible for McCain’s loss. Look no further than open primaries and the complete abandonment of conservative principles.

Second: Unless President Obama self-destructs by allowing the 111th Congress to run roughshod over his administration, there will be no conservative resurgence in 2010.

Third: The resurgence of conservatism will begin when conservatives wrest control of our government schools from liberal academia and demand accountability.

Finally: Barring the self-destruction of the Obama Administration, it’s going to be a very long eight-years, or more, because Republicans lack the courage to confront the teacher’s unions.
