McCain-Palin vs. Barack Obama

Wasn't there a number two on the Democratic ticket?

The McCain store is selling stickers and buttons, seen at right (click for larger image), for the newly announced 2008 GOP ticket. Sharp, eh? I especially note the fact that McCain and Palin’s names are in the same font and the same color, representing their team attitude with regard to the campaign. The only thing that differentiates them is vertical positioning — as the presidential nominee, McCain’s name is above his running mate’s.

Now, contrast that with the Obama-Biden logo seen at left (pulled in from the top left corner of Obama’s web site; see below for why I had to go there to get it).

As we’ve chronicled before, Barack Obama seemed to seriously resent the fact that he had to pick a running mate at all (Erick called him “Constitutionally-required window dressing”) — and, when he finally settled on Joe Biden (someone whose 36 years in the Senate made Obama’s attempts to continue a “Bringing Change from Without Washington” theme for his campaign a laughingstock), he had the elder statesman’s name tacked on to the bottom of his stickers in a blend-in-with-the-background-like-an-afterthought shade of blue, in part to ensure the focus of this campaign remained squarely where he wanted it: on himself.

You can hit the McCain campaign store at http://store.johnmccain.com/ to get a McCain-Palin sticker or button for yourself. Likewise, you can hit http://store.barackobama.com/ to pick up an Obama-and-Afterthought stick…..wait.

Wait, wait, wait.

Where’s the Biden?

Not one single page of the Barack Obama store web site has anything with Biden’s name on it!?

Wow. Just wow. I mean, I knew Obama was in this entirely for himself, but you’d think he’d have room somewhere for a piece of paraphernalia with his running mate’s name on it — like, you know, a sticker or something, right?

I guess not. So…it’s the GOP team of rugged individuals against the ambitious Individual Himself, who wants to take your money to pay for votes through promised handouts.

Credit to Obama, I suppose, for having the cojones to make it so obvious.

feel free to delete it, but I was amused that http://www.vpilf.com is an actual functioning website supporting Palin, and a pretty good one at that

  • Neil_Stevens

They’re still paying off all the Obama Edwards stuff they printed, which is why Chet got a look.

  • Gorio

If Joe Biden is NObama’s rumble dude, he better buff up starting last week. Not only is Sarah Palin more of a man than Joe, but if he takes a cheap shot I have a funny suspicion Mr. Palin could and would clean his clock in a New York minute and his expression shows it. Joey boy best not underestimate his VP opponent or her benefactor.

      • Neil_Stevens

He’s spent the last 30 years working with the likes of Ted Kennedy, Chris Dodd, and Barbara Boxer.

To have to debate someone like Palin, fresh out of the rough and tumble, is going to be like trying to walk after a 30 year coma.

  • PSDA

The Dems know that NOW is the time to throw everything they can at Palin in order to do what they did to Quayle–brand her early to shape a negative impression.

The Republicans need to be on guard, calling people out, and firing back hard. Right now. These are crucial hours and days.

Honestly, I’ve heard and read some incredibly sexist, demeaning, and downright absurd things said about Palin already on some of the cable networks. Things that would NEVER be tolerated toward a Democrat. The McCain-Palin campaign need to be shooting back in rapid-fire fashion, and concerned citizens need to get involved… whether that means donating to the McCain campaign or calling/writing emails to the networks.

  • Neil_Stevens

Were they going for an aurora effect?

Everytime I see the Obama / Biden logo (see above), I immediately think of Osama bin Laden.

Without reading each letter, my brain automatically fills in the gap and associates these words with Osama bin Laden. Of course, a second later I realize that it is indeed Obama and Biden.

Is this true for anybody else?

  • Wellred

Reminds me of that old ad campaign (?Virgin Atlantic):

    We’re #1, because we’ll never treat you like #2).

    • ConservaGeek

The first response from the Obama campaign didn’t really need much of a response beyond a sad shake of the head and maybe a rueful chuckle.

I mean, come on, calling her a small-town mayor, completely skipping over her service as governor of the largest of the 57–just ask Senator Obama–States…

It made Obama look small, petty, 3rd-grade-ish, and doesn’t deserve more of a reply than that.

I don’t know if you’re just new or if you are a Kos plant, but we don’t say stuff like you just said here. It makes the site look racist and adds NOTHING to the cause of conservatism. I’d knock it out quick if I were you.

If she can hold her own with Biden…Game over

Or, to put it another way:

Rush does it at least 2 times a day. Many anchors do and correct themselves or don’t realize it. I did it the first day I saw the new signs.

My son does it every day at least once. Heck some of his own party do it.

  • CK_MacLeod

When you look at the design on Obama-Biden, even before you consider its apparent unavailability at least as BO’s site, you also need to consider that the Big O symbol is in effect a re-statement of Obama’s name in heraldic or badge or hieroglyphic form. In sheer allocation of space, the design is around 75% Obama, 25% Biden, and the ratio is even more skewed if you also take color and order/priority into account.

    Not an accident.

    • BillM

I think the ‘Cuda could handle Credit Card Boy just fine on her own.

  • Wintergreen

I think Palin is doing tremendous things in her career and would be a great pick…in a few years.

I agree with her on her stances and she was someone I thought would be great for us down the road.

She’s not ready though. This isn’t going to play well.

They are thrusting her onto the national scene too soon. When I said that Obama is way too inexperienced for the presidency I meant it, and I can’t look at you with a straight face and say she’s any different.

McCain needed someone who was ready to step in case he bit the dust. She isn’t it.

  • BillM

    (cross-posted at Confirmthem)

I believe McCain is actually targeting older moderate/independent women, and trying to galvanize the base (Christians, pro-life single issue, hunters & NRA members, ethics hawks), rather than focus on any particular group of states, tho obv there will be overlaps.

Palin is risky (experience, creationism, Buchanan supporter in ’00), but if she delivers a spellbinding tearjerker at the convention, holds her own at the debate, proves the troopergate thing is nonsense, and gets Biden et al to say sexist or idiotic overreactions, it’s a masterstroke that will be talked about centuries from now. Her background & family certainly seem like they couldn’t be more compelling. Pity that Heart almost certainly won’t let her use “Barracuda”.

Somewhat of a Hail Mary, but in hindsight, IMO McCain knew that Lieberman or Ridge (almost certainly his top two choices) would split the base, Romney is too “controversial” (Mormon, too rich) and I still doubt they’re pals, and Pawlenty is also unknown and it’s unclear if he could deliver MN, or Romney MI. Safe boring white guy just wasn’t going to cut it this time, and when Hutch took herself out, Palin was the only one left, aside from Huckabee (who would’ve been forced to release his old sermons which undoubtedly contain some grist for the MSM).

It’s already brilliant short term, because Obama’s bounce is dead. They’re melting down at kos (although the lib women at Slate seem intrigued, if not downright enchanted–one is calling Palin “Daniela Boone”); absolutely livid that NO ONE will be talking about Barry’s speech this weekend. Wait til Palin starts giving interviews & speeches about how she never considered aborting her infant son w/Downs.

And at least Repubs are fired up now. Seen reports that “sources” say there’s sour grapes in the Romney & Pawlenty camps. If so, knock it off NOW. And also, everybody needs to keep their undies unbunched when Palin mentions Hillary in a positive way. Saw on CNN there was some booing & groaning when she did it today. Stop it. Only way to counter Barry’s extra pull w/blacks & college kids is with women.

Buckle up, folks, this is gonna be wild now. I may in fact be making my first political donation ever shortly. Daniela Boone, I like it…

“My initial reaction caught me off-guard…any thought of moderation soon disappeared….” – Heart, “(Biden’s) Nothing At All”

“Fell in love with a country girl, born in sunshine…in dreams I think of you, (kossacks) don’t know what to do with (themselves)…” – Black Sabbath, “Country Girl”

  • Oz

Hugh Hewitt talked to Dr. Dobson who as of last month said he wouldn’t vote for McCain, but as of this morning he said:

    1) “I can pull the lever for McCain/Palin”

    2) Something along the lines of not feeling this energized since Reagan.

    • BillM

But the only person I can think of who is unanimously perceived as “ready”, wouldn’t split the base AND would provide some excitement plus some appeal to moderates/independents/PUMAs is Hutchinson, and she very clearly didn’t want the job.

Like I said in my overwrought post(novel) which hopefully made it through, high risk = high reward. If she’s ready for primetime, McCain prolly wins, from there he just needs to live another 3+ years, and she’ll be ready to go.

      How does Palin-Jindal sound for 2016? :)

  • Shaggy_DA

McCainBlogette also has buttons and stickers with the McLovin/McCain logo with Palin added in up in the store already. And Palin is in the same font and size there as well. I was amazed that they were there already.

The human brain makes associations like that — and all you need is three letters to transform Obama-Biden. Mentioning that isn’t banworthy at all, but we’ll keep an eye on Mr. Proud ;-)

        • Uma_Richie

          is actually Bill Clinton.

          • ConservaGeek

…he does have a point, but it could easily be used by the Kos kiddies to attack RedState as racist.

Not, of course, that lack of evidence would stop them from trying such a smear.

          • Neil_Stevens

            I don’t smell troll.

  • mattonium

You guys are crying about font size and color. Isn’t Obama first on the ticket as McCain is? Shouldn’t the #1 be in a bigger font? Maybe not, maybe it’s not important.

    Former Republican and Independent here.

    • gamecock

      you wouldn’t.

      • Wintergreen

ticket was where I eventually thought we were heading.

Too be honest, the Republican party needs to start bringing in some fresh blood. The Dems do too. Washington is dominated by a bunch of lobbyist-diseased dinosaurs that have been around forever.

Palin was someone I thought we would have coming up a few years from now.

        • aaronbg

But, sometimes ya gotta bring people up sooner than you expected.

Palin-Jindal 2012 or 2016 would be a great ticket, then Jindal-??? eight years later.

          • QueenOfCups

when I woke up this morning to the Palin reports, I was very disappointed, until I saw her make her speech!

            I was unreservedly won over.

She’s a firecracker! I had never seen her before, and she came off very real and honest.

She’s beautiful, animated and her voice doesn’t make the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

  • proud

I apologize. I did not realize that my observation would set off such a firestorm. I am a McCain supporter and contributor and not affiliated with Kos.

    • gamecock

      good

      • QueenOfCups

Isn’t that refreshing? And the best part is, she’s OURS!

        • gamecock

          has great effects

          • Jeff_Emanuel

You know — like where I wrote that “not one single page of the Barack Obama store web site has anything with Biden’s name on it.”

Or you could just beclown yourself by accusing people of “crying” and completely misstating what is being talked about.

Your call. My money’s on your choosing the little-boy option, not the grown-up one.

…and I have a nose for trolls as you know…;^)…plus he apologized down below.

          • Wintergreen

Said the biggest troll on this board, Aaron Gardner.

Why is he a troll? Because the guy stalks anyone who disagrees with him from blog to blog and does whatever he can to cry about ways he’s been wronged whether it’s on topic or not.

            IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

A few days ago I said that–because of how favorable this election is setting up for democrats and general disgust for Bush–that Lieberman or Whitman were probably our best shots. I also said that I would happily support them to keep Obama’s Marxism out of the White House.

I also said that Palin was too inexperienced and that Romney and Pawlenty were far too ho-hum.

These are still my positions. I’m not saying I am happy with these choices. I’m not. I don’t think we had a very good option this cycle.

I think Palin and Jindal were our best bets…a few years from now.

WHAT I’VE WRITTEN ABOVE IS HONESTLY HOW I SEE THE VP CHOICES FOR THIS ELECTION. I DON’T CARE WHO KNOWS IT AND I DON’T CARE IF THE THOUGHT POLICE TROLLS DON’T LIKE IT.

          • ConservaGeek

            why?

Because I truly have a hard time wrapping my mind around the existence of people that would actually use their limited time on earth pretending to believe something else for so little return.

            am I naive?

          • aaronbg

I am still waiting to hear one conservative thought posted by him.

          • Wintergreen

And another enormous lie rolls out of his mouth. I’m pro-life and a fiscal conservative, and no, despite what he thinks, Aaron Gardner doesn’t get to arrogantly decide what other people believe and think.

As the troll was told repeatedly, in this election I’d rather run a small risk with a pro-choice vp and win than assume a 100% risk with a Marxist President joining up with Pelosi and Reid.

I still feel that way and no, I don’t think we have very good options this election because of Bush and the wayward Republican party. If the thought police don’t like it then I’d suggest crying about it because people aren’t always going to agree, and stalking them up and down the board when they don’t is both obsessive and weird.

          • aaronbg

            n/t

          • Wintergreen

Pro-life and fiscal conservatism are conservative thoughts/positions.

            Thanks for playing.

shaking my head at how prissy you are when someone disagrees with you

Do you want some tissues, Aaron? Someone didn’t agree with you? That’s rough. Just let it all out. Life isn’t fair.

          • olderwhitewoman

I can only say that when I went over to check on her today my even older-white-woman mother (82) was practically giggling over her take on in the mess that McCain has stepped in to now – and I can guarantee that she is pretty darn conservative on MANY issues.

Her theory? Palen is a sign of desperation.

          • Rod_Patrick

It is supposed to be a no-contest since it’s a shoo-in year for the Dems. But no, things are mixed up and McCain has just done the most stirrups. But I beg to disagree about Sarah. SHE IS NOT A DESPERATION. She is the best offer that McCain could give to the American people for VP.

When people say Palin is a reformer, that’s not just a “hype” or a political correctness move. They coined the word for Palin based on what she has done so far in Alaska. And she really is a Reformer. In fact, her best suit is simply composed of the following:

            • Drill Oil NOW. Palin is the Ambassador of Energy Independence Against Foreign Oil. She’s been shouting at Fox News since Day 1 on Oil Crisis. Palin is the best reason why McCain can now flipflop on ANWR with logic.

            • *Straight talk. * Talk directly to the people. This is Sarah’s politics. This is consistent with Townhall Meetings of McCain.

            • *If it’s right…do it quickly. If it’s corruption, destroy it… no matter who’d get hurt in the process. *This is why Sarah is so popular in Alaska.

            • “Return to people what the Government earns.” This is her stance in using the state surplus from taxes on natural gas royalties as fuel relief, instead of using the same in “government” white elephant projects (in contrast to Obama’s pro-poor but corrupt projects). One may think that it is subsidy (not very conservative) but it is not. For Sarah, the royalties are “money of the people” and should be returned to them, which is very conservative.

            • “If I can’t protect my own family from abusive MEN, how can I protect other women?” Being too ethical and “by the book” always end up the police coming to a crime scene with a dead victim. It’s not in Sarah’s blood to “play victim”. SHE IS NO HYPOCRITE.

            • “If you’re doing a measly job in public office, I will kick you out”. Palin hates non-performer, especially if it’s a Republican like her. Never mind if the non-performer plays the role of the victim in the ADN.

            • Instead of aborting a “defective” fetus which diagnosed with down syndrome while in her womb, she gave birth to it. Sarah hates technicalities. In Sarah’s viewpoint, if it is human life, it should protected – no excuses and no political correctness!

            • Instead of just useless, “good-for-election” rhetorics against international big oil companies, Sarah really kicked them by awarding a natgas contract to smaller but capable company in Alaska as its principal. Profits will therefore stay in Alaska. Sarah is a doer, not a talker.

            • Instead of federal government doing everything, Sarah believes that it should be the responsibility of the State itself to manage its own economic affairs, instead of doing nothing except waiting for help from the Fed.

Many of the above are managerial capabilities… too non-partisan. It will be so exciting if those barracuda traits shall be rubbed off to United States President by the influence of a VP.

And most of all, Palin is REAL WASHINGTON OUTSIDER. Sara (and not NOBAMA) is true Young and Idealistic Leader untouched by WASHINGTON dirts. GOOD JOB, JOHNNY MAC!!!!

You don’t know the difference between conservative thought and conservative positions. Oh and I never lied about you nor have I called you names beyond troll. You on the other hand have called me a liar and a troll and arrogant and now prissy. And then tell me that I cry when someone disagrees with me…that’s rich. Anyhow I offered a truce up thread…too bad you didn’t take that opportunity. Oh and you should go back to the other thread and answer the questions I posed to you. That would be what I would do if you questioned me…of course I am not a troll. See ya around.
