When it is some kind of evil illegal association to the NYT and MSM in general for Todd Palin to work for an oil company; Sarah Palin’s political enemies to throw mud; McCain to bury the hatchet and support his party’s nominee in 2000; just why is it that Obama requires 99% conviction with the proverbial live boy or dead girl to get a disparaging mention.

is a stretch. He was president of an advocacy group established by Fannie and Freddie to lobby against regulations. If they had any semblance of plausible deniability, they wouldn’t be trying to change the subject. Say what you will about the NYT’s bias, these are basic facts. You can interpret them how you want, but you have so far not proven them untrue.

I don’t blame them. I wish more Republicans and even Bush would push back against the Grey Lady.

Today, McCain ought to be taking a strong position on the economic mess. Focusing on this instead is inherently defensive and focuses people’s attention in the wrong direction (as in, “Why is he talking about the New York Times? Oh, because they attacked his guy for being a lobbyist/sort of lobbyist/something vaguely like a lobbyist for Fannie and Freddie.”)

You can always tee off on the press. They are always there to be abused. Even then, you want to do it with a bit more muscle and a lot less “Mommy, they’re picking on me” tone to it.

Today, McCain needs to be defining himself as the guy with the focus and the integrity to solve the economic puzzle, and this does exactly zero to advance that ball.

This is indulgent. It lacks focus. It lacks discipline. It wastes a hugely important day in the news cycle. It doesn’t feel Presidential. It doesn’t brand McCain as he wants to be branded.

Not a good use of a very, very big news cycle.

President McCain will not be pushed around by the media without fighting back hard. Which would be a great change for the better imo.

From doing nothing about leaked security information to apologizing for the “8 words”, I believe that President Bush turned himself into a punching bag for these guys trying to be nice. It’s time to fight back.

Let me first say we are First Amendment absolutists on this campaign. The press and anybody who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere perspective or from a media perspective is of course constitutionally protected with regard to writing whatever they want to write.

Does this mean McCain now supports private citizens engaging in their own free speech through paid advertisements in the 60 days prior to the election, without threat of prison? That would be the absolutist First Amendment position and require revoking at least part of McCain/Feingold.

Sorry, as much as I am behind McCain in this election I get get over the rich irony of watching the monopoly of speech he created turn on him, getting “hoisted on his own petard”. I just hope he’s learning from this experience the same way he learned on immigration and taxes.
