Multiple sources are reporting that Republican Senators Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins have reached an agreement with Democrats on a final $780 billion version of the so-called “stimulus” package.
Way to sell out your team, folks.
Update by Jeff: According to the AP, Democrats expect this “bipartisan” agreement to be little more than a formality necessary to get the bill through the Senate and into conference, where they plan to restore the $140B decrease negotiated by Benedict ArnoldArlen Specter, Benedict ArnoldSusan Collins, and Benedict ArnoldOlympia Snowe.
I hope you enjoy the short-lived feather in your cap this compromise will be, Senators. All you’ve done is pave the way for this bill to get far enough along in the process to have everything you negotiated out put right back in — and at that point there’ll be nothing you can do to stop it.

They were against the war, etc. I asked one how he could call himself a republican when all he was for on his webiste were dem ideas, of course I got no answer. I voted for the oppponents justt so I didn’t cast a vote for Kerry and Markey, I usually write my own name in rarther than vote for one of them.
I have called these republicans, Snow, Collins, Specter since Friday. VM is full. I did email Kennedy several times and he, rather his staff has answered. I left Kerry a message telling him I was against this, but Kerry never responds.
I don’t agree with anything Kennedy says, but I have to give him credit, he is gravely ill, but does have his staff respond, with his views, but at least he responds to me.
I would like real Republicans in MA, but will not hold my breath. Oganowski almost won rep seat from Tsongas in 2007 with very little money and the big dem machine against him. He was running against Kerry early in 2008, If Oganowski did so well by himself, I doubt he would have gotten his name tossed for not having enough signatures. I suspect foul play by the other one.

So if Spector had no help then the grassroots of the party would have taken care of him. Anyways in 2010, if the RNC were to aid a Schilling or Toomey campaign, Spector would likely pull enough GOP-leaning suburban independents away as a 3rd party candidate because he is that vindictive. As Dan said it is better to use RNC money to beat Democrats and let grassroots organization like CFG and NRTL handle primaries.

But when so-called Republican office holders deviate from *economic* orthodoxy, like supporting tax increases or voting for a bill like this, they should no longer be welcome in the party. (This tends to be the opposite of the Dems who aren’t allowed to deviate on their decadent social policies, but can deviate on some economic issues.)
Anyway, Republicans who deviate on critical economic policies should be shown the door.
And no talk of previous “leadership” votes, or votes on executive or judicial nominations, is going to cut it.
Deviate on economics, and you’re gone.
It’s that simple.

i don’t consider votes from snowe and collins to be token support for the party. they vote with the party on many things - and no one ever thanks them for keeping their blue state seats republican for us and delivering those votes to the party.
i don’t say this lightly. i was very sorry to see them turn against the iraq war in 2007, and i am very sorry that they may go with the dems on this bill. these aren’t small issues.
but unless you can show me that we can get more conservative politicians elected in their states, i’ll continue to respect and be grateful for the modest support of snowe and collins.

It’s really taken me this long to figure out who some of the leading voices are on this site - I enjoy everyone, but you, sir, are one of the leading voices. I got your message loud and clear. I think we ALL did - usually happens when you preach to the choir. I know you write for many other sources (I have a brother living in Charlotte) and I’m sure you reach many many people and I’m sure that most of the folks in Washington got your message too. Unfortunately, these three idiots did not. So you can’t cure stupid. I’m sorry, don’t take it personally. You really did everything you could - what more could ANY of us have done (unless we had another week or two - that really might have made a major difference). Obama has been his usual deceitful self about all this, and the webs he has woven will trap him in the end. It will be very very difficult to get out of this mess, but frankly, I NEVER believed the “4 million jobs created” bulls***, so I don’t believe there can possibly be 600,000 gov’t jobs. I’m more worried about the inability to ever get out of increased welfare, universal healthcare, and some of the other “agenda” that will come along with this bill - some of it is cleverly inserted in to it already. Crap. I’m not helping, am I. Sorry about that. But don’t feel that your work was for naught.

As I’ve posted before using representive (rough) numbers, if a governor seeks and accepts his/her states share of the porkulus pie, each and every state resident takes on $5,000 of federal debt for $5,000 of money to be spent by their own state. If a governor turns down the money, each and every state resident takes on $4,900 of federal debt and gets nothing in return. It’s like a group dinner where all know the check is going to be split evenly. No one orders the hamburger, cause the benefit from thriftiness is miniscule.
Senators, however, have the ability to vote No! And if it turns into a huge blue state grab from the red states, then let the seceding commence!

I don’t get upset over this because of me, it is for those who have fought and died to protect and preserve liberty in this nation. It is for our founding fathers and their brave actions to head to the new world for freedom of speech, freedom of religion and excessive taxation - FOR LIBERTY!!! How ironic that Philadelphia Pennsylvania is where our Liberty Bell remains, where our Constitution was signed for the above goals of the founding fathers - and now a Senator, a RINO from PA has help to sign the death warrant on Liberty, on everything that was done there so many years ago!!! I also wept for my grandfather (RIP FEC) who fought for freedom, to protect this nation in World War II (Air Force - China/Burma/India), and then came home and through our capitalist system worked hard day and night to build his own business and worked to help others, who taught me who Ronald Reagan was as I was a child (he was my first President that I remember), (thank goodness I don’t remember Jimmy Carter - too young) and why Conservatism is the solution and government is the problem, and all those generations before us. I wept for my son and all the generations after us.

katesmith Friday, February 6th at 9:51PM EST (link)Interviewed on Mark Levin’s radio show (by Mark’s substitute host) King gives the same rap as Mike Pence did on a radio interview the other day. ie The bill is not really Obama’s fault, it’s the House democrats. King says Obama probably didn’t know a lot of things that were in the bill, will probably feel bad about it, and he couldn’t do anything about it. Among other things, Obama was in the Senate himself so had to know what was building.King is saying he does think Obama is sincere and wants to be bipartisan but made a big mistake trusting the house democrats. The same exact portrayal as Pence gave–doesn’t even consider ‘good cop/bad cop’ which should be obvious. Both King and Pence went out of theri way on numerous occasions within a finite radio interview to absolve Obama and say what a great guy he is. These Republicans are a huge embarrassment.

You can sense that everyone in Washington knows Obama is a lightweight and can be rolled. You see it in the questions reporters are asking Scott McClellan Junior, you can see it in the House Dems utter disregard for anything that Obama says, you can see it in the relative unity of the Republicans, and you can feel the air being sucked from his little Hope and Change storm troopers. My fear is that the whole world knows this too.
