One interview was with a mid sized farm that usually needed 15 full time laborers. They had lost all of their regular 'illegals' and the only two locals that interviewed for a job said that they would need to be paid in cash so they wouldn't lose their unemployment checks. This farm said they were going to shut down and go on welfare themselves.
This reminds me of the tobacco farmers in KY back in the 60's - all the harvest labor was guys from the mountains; until they were put on welfare. Then the mountain guys were no longer interested in working farm labor jobs. Now most farm workers in KY are Mexican.
I think Bush recognized this issue when he proposed "guest workers".
I don't know what the answer is...... but this problem is not going away.
