If Curly Haugland is typical of his fellow RNC members, that would go a long way toward explaining why the Republican Party is in such a mess. Haugland recently sent an e-mail to former Lt. Governor Michael Steele of Maryland asking Steele to give up his quest for the RNC’s chairmanship. The Washington Times printed portions of the e-mail in a story by Ralph Hallow in today’s edition, excerpts of which follow, with my comments:
“For this association of members to choose to outsource its leadership would, I believe, be an abdication of our responsibility.”
What, Republicans who aren’t RNC members can’t play? Sounds like you’ve got quite a good old boy network there, Mr. Haugland.
“In my estimation, 168 committed members of the Republican National Committee are a powerful army of qualified advocates for Republican principles; certainly much more threatening to the Democrats than one celebrity spokesman.”
Celebrity spokesman? Michael Steele is well-known to Republicans, and at two RNC national conventions in a row, he really fired up all the delegates. You have it backwards, Mr. Haugland. It’s Republicans like Steele who threaten Democrats, not ineffective “qualified advocates” such as yourself and your like-minded cohorts in the RNC who have led the party to two consecutive defeats in two national elections.
“Your chosen path to leadership of the Republican National Committee exemplifies the problem we should immediately seek to resolve, that being the practice of allowing nonmembers to exert undue influence in the process of selecting our leaders.”
Let’s examine Michael Steele’s “chosen path” to leadership of the RNC, Mr. Haugland. He has served as chairman of the Prince George’s County Republican Central Committee, chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, and chairman of GOPAC. In those positions, he worked to get Republicans elected to office and raised money at the county, state and national levels. That’s a perfect background for the job of RNC chairman. The Maryland GOP has honored him as State Republican Man of the Year. Steele got elected to the lieutenant governorship of a blue state while espousing conservative principles and values – no small feat. He has private sector experience in finance at a time when this nation is in severe financial difficulty, and he can use that experience to help select and mentor Republican candidates for national office to offer solutions to those difficulties. He’s probably the best-qualified of all Republicans to chair the RNC.
“Getting the Republican Party back on the right ‘track’ is a job rightfully left to the Republicans who have been elected to run this railroad.”
No, Mr. Haugland, many of those Republicans and your good old boy network derailed the train. If you were an engineer, the railroad would fired you by now. The last thing the Republican Party needs to do is trust the guys who ran the train off the track to get it back on the rails again.
Your e-mail to Michael Steele is arrogant, dismissive and frankly, insulting. You should be ashamed of yourself. I’m sure you have heard it said, “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” You have shown that you can’t lead, and you’re too arrogant to follow. So get out of the way! It’s time for you and those who think like you to go.

Steele called the leaders of the RNC "country club".
Steph C (Diary) Friday, November 28th at 8:13AM EST (link)I believe that email is a prime example of what Steele meant. Sounds to me like the RNC doesn’t want to change if it means becoming less “country club.”
I never did donate a dime to the RNC. Attitudes like Haugland’s is one of the reasons why. Instead, I donated to individual candidates whom I thought deserved some help.
Perhaps the RNC doesn’t mind being in the wilderness as long as they can keep their illusions about Republicanism.

I think he, Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Cantor, Tom Coburn, Mike Pence and Jeff Flake are people who should have more of a voice in the GOP as it moves forward.
Jaded, I meant no offense.
Michael Dugas (Diary) Friday, November 28th at 9:40PM EST (link)If you feel I accused you of being racist in reverse(?) than I apologize. That was not my intention. I am of the belief that he doesn’t have the experience to be RNC chairman. That’s my opinion. I wouldn’t have had a problem donating money for his run for senate. But whoever is going to be RNC chairman has to have the experience to be up and running from the get go due to the current condition of our party. There’s no time for OJT. Being Lt. Gov. of Maryland doesn’t cut it for me. Again my opinion.
If he were to get the RNC position he would have my full support but that in know way means I have to agree that he’s the man for the job. Secondly I have listened to his speeches etc., they sound great but then again politicians will say whatever they have to to get elected. i.e. Mel Martinez etc. It’s the follow through that I worry about.
So let me say also that I am wrong, according to you. To others I am right.
But I would never be subtle in calling something or someone racist. If I thought that was the issue I’d say it right out front.
I enjoy your posts and agree with your points of view (especially the military as I am a 2 branch vet). I am sorry if you were offended by my post and I will make an effort to better explain myself. Being sarcastic or not, why state it?
There is no anti abortion enough.
You either are, or are not.
It’s like being a “little pregnant.”
I take it your mother was on the wrong side of this issue.
2) The arrogance, I believe of using quotes in a foreign language. I thought we were in America.
I think some, but not all commentators use foreign language to show how much more smarter that they are than others.
It doesn’t make you smart to know a foreign language. To me it just means that you wasted your time and money learning something you didn’t need to know, unless your job calls for it.
Conservatives believe in legal immigration, and to be legal you must learn to speak American English. If you want to speak a foreign language, then you might want to go to the country of your choice.

The racist in reverse is saying that WE who like...
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Friday, November 28th at 11:41PM EST (link)Michael Steele do so because a black was elected President ie: knee jerk to Obama….what else it could it mean to say that? what else do the two have in common but being black? I am sure you meant no harm but that statement is exactly that we are being reverse racists! I like him because I like his message I like the way he delivers it HE DOESN’T APOLOGIZE FOR BEING CONSERVATIVE!
WE need that in our party WE need to be unapologetic….period!

Bottom Up
Whitehorse (Diary) Friday, November 28th at 11:57PM EST (link)That’s where the power in the Republcan party comes from, the grassroots. I too am appalled at the tone of his email. I will contact our RNC representatives & ask that they support an RNC chair candidate who is a true, bold-color complete conservative.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

Jaded, I don't apologize for being a conservative
Michael Dugas (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 4:03AM EST (link)I don’t apologize for being a conservative either yet I know I don’t have the where with all to be RNC chair. And they have more than just being black in common. They ARE BOTH political neophytes popular within their parties for their newness and not being tainted by Washington cooties.
The gentleman’s resume consists of one campaign for Lt. Gov. The RNC chair is a position that begs for experience and connections within the party and out.
I’m sorry Jaded but our Party’s situation demands that we have someone who we KNOW can do it not someone we HOPE can do it.

I accept your apology/explanation
Doc Holliday (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 4:39AM EST (link)I don’t speak for Jaded. I think you are wrong when you say he is a “knee-jerk” reaction to Obama. If anything, he is a knee-jerk reaction to the leaders who have run this party into the ground.
And you are wrong to call him a neophyte, when compared to any others who would be a fresh face with new ideas. He did not just run for Lt. Governor, he won. He has also been a party spokesman for years.
Personally, I am not ready to annoint the man. I think we need to move more to the libertarian wing ala Shadegg/Flake. But Steele could do a good job and again I have yet to read a specific suggestion from you sir.
Molon Labe!
Doc, I like Jeff Flake also.
Michael Dugas (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 5:24AM EST (link)The post was about Steele being RNC chair and his qualifications. No one asked about who else I might like except you so here it goes. Jeff Flake would be a good choice, he’s on his 3rd or 4th term, I believe, in AZ. I*’d have to check up on
his stats but from what I remember he’s a small gov., anti-pork conservative with several campaigns worth of organizing experience to go with it. He has also had alot of time in to see who else is like minded. Jeb Hensarling(hope I am spelling that right)from Dist.5 in Tx. is a personal fav of mine. Pence is worth a look at also. I am not familiar enough with Shadegg to say anything but will look him up.
As far as Steele goes Doc I have nothing against him but his experience and his stance against the death penalty. His time as Lt. Gov. does nothing for me as it’s mostly a rah-rah position which is what it was designed for. He spent almost his entire time traveling the state of Maryland getting face time for himself and supporting the Govs stances. That is what he was supposed to do but I don’t see it as experience needed for RNC chair. Now several people have come back and stated that it’s not a job that experience is called for. That’s ridiculous. There is NOTHING more important than selecting and supporting the right candidates that stay on message both during and AFTER the elections. But hey that’s just me and my opinion right, which in the end is what all this is about. Ideas and opinions. Lets just hope they are the RIGHT ones this time around.
BTW, I thought I was the only knucklehead on this early other than Pej.
Thanks for the response.

I don't know what it is about AZ.
Doc Holliday (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 6:17AM EST (link)I have a VA/TX heritage, but I am always amazed how AZ puts out so many libertarian-conservatives, the people I think are the real conservatives. Of course there is Goldwater, but the list does go on. I can include Texans and some from other states west of Texas and east of California lol.
I am not exactly sure why they put out the most libertarian minded types, but I have a good idea why. If you want to go back to the cowboys days, it would not be totally off base. There is something about people from a rugged land that tend to mind their own business and defend what is theirs. I think Alaskans such as Palin have a bit of that atribute. I think most areas of the country are set in their ways, in many way lol, but there is something about AZ Repubs that has always clicked with me. Don’t get me wrong, Virginia is home and I would never claim another one.
Molon Labe!
I think you're dead on Doc.
Michael Dugas (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 8:20AM EST (link)I do believe that it has to do with a life of going it on your own in a rugged environment and the pride that that instills in ones self. I grew up in west Texas, New Mexico and Arizona and love those wild places and their peoples.
When people get used to the government doing for them, thinking for them, teaching them they lose something inside.
They become dependent and followers and forget about vision and faith and the pride self reliance brings to them and their families. Hence 2008

Well Mike I am glad to hear that and you and Steele...
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Saturday, November 29th at 8:46AM EST (link)have that in common
Now Flake would be wonderful BUT he has a job to do and rebuilding the Party is going to be a full time venture!….It is like hiring the Business Development guy for you company…..he is NOT doing the secretarial work also he is strictly SELLING your product and you WANT him schmoozing a promoting your product so that best people (politicians) WANT to OWN it to.
I mean if we are going to have the RNC Chair be someone who is already working on his or her states people’s business we are going to have a distracted Chair….because the first ORDER of their committment OUGHT to be to their people!
