A recent post on Sarah Palin by U.S. News blogger Bonnie Erbe claims: “Sarah Palin May Not Be Dumb, but She’s Not Smart.” It was written in response to her colleague Robert Schlesinger, whose own Palin post began, “I don’t think Sarah Palin is dumb, but I do wonder how ready to work she is.”
I wonder how ready to work Bonnie Erbe is, because I find her lack of intellectual honesty… disturbing. For example, Erbe claims that she wants to be “fair.” But her contention that Gov. Palin is not smart is shot down by her own colleague Schlesinger, who quotes no less an intellect than economics professor and former McCain policy director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who expressed his opinion that the governor is smart.
Ms. Erbe seems to have missed Democrat Elaine Lafferty’s Daily Beast posting in which the former Ms. magazine editor said of the former vice presidential candidate:
Sarah Palin is very smart.
Ms. Lafferty reveals that she had heard rumors that Sarah Palin possesses a photographic memory and testified that she was able to witness it firsthand:
She sees. She processes. She questions, and only then, she acts. What is often called her “confidence” is actually a rarity in national politics: I saw a woman who knows exactly who she is.
For all those old enough to remember Senator Sam Ervin, the brilliant strict constitutional constructionist and chairman of the Senate Watergate Committee whose patois included “I’m just a country lawyer”…Yup, Palin is that smart
What reasoning does Ms. Erbe give for her contention that Gov. Palin is not smart? She cites the interviews with ABC’s Charles Gibson and CBS’s Katie Couric. Admittedly, Palin was not properly prepared for either interview. The governor should have done a lot better.
But broadcaster and writer Charlie Wolf is one of those who, unlike Erbe, does his homework. Just a little bit of investigating is all that is required to discover that:
The press talked down to her and asked her silly questions as if she were participating in a pub quiz; the editing did her no justice and there is a world of difference between the segments that went to air and the un-edited items…
The press and the intellectual elites want to make out that she is stupid – she’s not
The Gibson ABC interview was indeed heavily edited, and for the See-BS interview, Katie Couric prepped with Obama advisors Sam Nunn and Richard Haas.
More from Ms. Erbe:
Is there anyone out there who would claim with a straight face that Governor Palin is a terrific intellect? I don’t think so.
Ms. Erbe doesn’t think so, because she is either too intellectually disingenuous or lacks the intellectual curiosity to put Google to work.
Charlie Black, a veteran of Republican campaigns going back to Ronald Reagan’s 1976 presidential bid, said of Sarah Palin:
“She’s plenty smart. She’s brilliant. She’s incredibly talented.”
Former House Speaker and history professor Newt Gingrich:
“She talked about Reagan with great affection. But then she also talked about Lady Thatcher, and I think it’s interesting for a number of our friends who assume that, if you come from Wasilla, you can’t be very sophisticated. She was pretty vividly aware of who Margaret Thatcher was, and it made an impact on her as a young woman, watching and growing up in high school and college.”
Congressman Eric Cantor, who holds a law degree from William & Mary and a masters from Columbia:
“Sarah Palin is a smart conservative woman who represents change.”
Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan:
“I found her quite a capable woman. She asked the right questions on Afghanistan.”
Boston globe pundit Jeff Jacoby:
“I suspect that the loathing of Palin by so much of the opinion elite is driven not by contempt for her brainpower but by fear of her political potential.”
Feminist, author and college professor Camille Paglia:
“As a career classroom teacher, I can see how smart she is — and quite frankly, I think the people who don’t see it are the stupid ones, wrapped in the fuzzy mummy-gauze of their own worn-out partisan dogma.”
Military historian, columnist, political essayist and former classics professor Victor Davis Hanson:
“I did learn that by the standard of John Kerry’s pick of John Edwards, and now Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden, as running mates, she is wise and ethical beyond their measure.”
Democrat and former Manhattan Supervising Judge Judith Sheindlin:
“I think she’s smart… And anybody that thinks that this woman is stupid is just plain mean- spirited and wrong.”
Search engines are not that difficult to use. Really, they aren’t. Ms. Erbe concludes her attack on Sarah Palin with this:
Is she dumb? Well, let’s put it this way: She’s clearly no intellect.
Not so clearly and not so fast, Ms. Erbe. Consider this from Yuval Levin’s recent Palin essay:
She is the product of an America in which explicit displays of pride in intellect are considered unseemly, and where physical prowess and moral constancy are given a higher place than intellectual achievement. She was in the habit of stressing these faculties instead—a habit that struck many in Washington as brutishness.
This is why Palin was seen as anti-intellectual when, properly speaking, she was simply non-intellectual. What she lacked was not intelligence – she is, clearly, highly intelligent – but rather the particular set of assumptions, references, and attitudes inculcated by America’s top twenty universities and transmitted by the nation’s elite cultural organs.
Those who have done battle with her will admit that underestimating her intellect can can be hazardous to one’s political future, as Fred Barnes reported:
Randy Ruedrich, the Republican chairman in Alaska, is someone you might suspect would be a friend and ally of Palin. He isn’t. She helped drive him off the state’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, criticized him publicly, and later tried to get him ousted as party chairman. Ruedrich is part of the “body count” of male politicians Palin left behind as she rose to become governor of Alaska. Yet Ruedrich says Palin is smart, very capable, and a political star
Barnes points out that Sarah Palin’s harshest critics are usually those who have never met her:
In judging Palin, it comes down to who is more credible. Is it those who’ve worked with her, or know her, or have at least met and talked with her? Or those who haven’t? The answer is a no-brainer.
Bonnie Erbe, by her own admission, is one of those who never met Sarah Palin, nor does Ms. Erbe seem even slightly interested in using that most basic tool of research – the search engine. A few minutes of her time, a modicom of intellectualy curiosity and the desire to execise her computer’s mouse could have saved her from the embarrassment of demonstrating just how baseless and foolishly elitist her mean-spirited attacks on Gov. Palin’s intellect are.
If Ms. Erbe doesn’t like Gov. Palin’s position on the issues – fine. She should challenge them. If she believes that Palin, like most other governors, needs schooling on national and international issues, that’s grounds for legitimate criticism. If the blogger doesn’t like Palin’s hair, what she wears, her faith, her folksy mannerisms or the fact that the former vice presidential candidate believes in being fruitful and multiplying, then she should say so. These last things have no real political substance, but by all means Ms. Erbe should voice her objections on these grounds, if she has them. But you cannot attack another person’s intellect without making your own fair game.
Bonnie Erbe may not be dumb, but her blogging certainly isn’t very smart.

Sarah Palin might as well be the equivalent of the rage virus. This obsession with Palin is unhealthy for the Republican party. We are two years away from even knowing what the conditions of the next election will be. Palin may be a good candidate at that time, but the average of two posts a day from you on Palin in the tone of worship that you have built for her is down right disgusting. Remember Josh, she is a politician. Don’t get too attached to a politician. You will get burned. I would think you would know that by now.

Darth_Paleo Saturday, February 7th at 10:59AM EST (link)Time for a reality check Bry. Nobody on the right is obsessing over Palin. What we are ticked off about is that a person’s reputation got trashed on lies and smears. My personal favorite to run is Jindal. I do like Palin, and I believe based on her RECORD, she is a smart and capable person. So get the facts straight. I’m saying that Palin should be allowed to run in the Republican primaries and let her abilities determine whether she should be the torch bearer in 2012 for the Republican Party. That will be the true vetting process. It’s really not a hard concept to understand.

Brian: there’s no “Cult of Palin.” There’s a much better argument that Obama was and remains a cult figure, particularly because he got elected, but not just that. People on this blog have admitted time and time again that the McCain campaign in fact did more to damage Palin’s candidacy than even the media themselves could do. I hardly find that evidence of a “cult” — actually the record is more one of persecution.
Oprah Winfrey has a cult. Barack Obama has a cult. Sarah Palin gets listed in the Washington Post alongside criminals Brian.

58 milllion people thought she was more then qualified to be president
Darth_Paleo Saturday, February 7th at 10:42AM EST (link)That’s just a fact. Palin has earned the right to run in the Republican Primaries. I judge Palin by the work she has done as Governor in Alaska. If this woman was a complete dunce, it would reflect in her approval numbers among her constituents. I wish people can give some factual evidence to support why she isn’t capable of doing the job as President seeing that she has more executive experience now then Obama has. Just present me the FACTS not FEELINGS or ASSUMPTIONS. That’s all I ask.
From ABC:
docdaneeka (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 11:06AM EST (link)“At her peak, after the Republican convention, 59 percent of likely voters held an overall favorable opinion of Palin.
Now that’s down to 46 percent, while 51 percent see her unfavorably. Majority disfavor is danger for any public figure; so is its intensity — and an unusually large 40 percent have a “strongly” unfavorable opinion of Palin.”
It’s an uphill battle. When so many people liked her, around the time of the convention, no one had really been exposed to her yet. It was pretty much all downhill from there. Yeah, conservatives continued to have a crush on her, but she became a national joke.
Most polling
Princeliberty Saturday, February 7th at 11:50AM EST (link)Most polling has show the opinion of Palin on a steady rise since the election.
But in any case its very foolish to quote polls now for the purposes of 2012.
Palin does not even know if she will run in 2012. She really does not.
She may decide to wait 2016 a very viable option for her. She is a rare postion for a national figure. Most of the time you got to run or you will get too old or either its a short term moment that will pass.
She has no such problem. Palin will force to reckon with for the next few decades whether you like it or not.

Darth_Paleo Saturday, February 7th at 11:23AM EST (link)Do you realize that most of the people that voted for Obama thought that Palin was the one who said “I can see Alaska from my house” when it was actually Tina Fey?This has nothing to do with Palin but the stupidity of liberal and uninformed voters in general!!! It doesn’t matter who runs on the right, the media will go out of it’s way to smear them. Republicans controlled the White House for 20 out of 28 years from 1980 to 2008 with no fanfare or even balance from the MSM. The same so called conservatives that attack Palin are probably the same ones that would have dismissed Ronald Reagan getting the nomination back in 1980. The media trashed Reagan as stupid, a dumb actor etc, old etc. I rather lose on convictions any day then win on sold out principals. If Palin wins the nomination, I will support her as a conservative. The more the media and Obama’s drones attack her, the more I like here. That should say something in itself. When McCain ran in the primaries, the media gave him great coverage for a reason. They wanted him to win the nomination, because they knew he would be an easy mark for Hillary or Obama. They’re is no easy way out in winning in this political environment if you are a conservative. Face the reality of the situation. They’re are over 30 different draft Sarah Palin or pro Sarah Palin sites on the net.. She will be able to raise an insane amount of money to run in the primaries. The bottom line is that she isn’t going anywhere. I along with millions of other conservatives will sit back and observe what happens. If Charlie Crist or Tim Palenty run, I bet the media and the pundits will give them the great favorable treatment in the primaries. Why is it that liberals are the ones that seemed unified, yet it is conservatives that appear to be the ones cutting each other conservatives down at the knees?
Earth to Darth Paleo.
docdaneeka (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 12:12PM EST (link)Do you realize that what people think is really all that matters? So what if it was Tina Fey in your example. The fact that so many people think it was Palin should give you a slight indication of what you are facing here.
There is a big difference between truth and public perception, but right now there is a strong public perception that she is not bright. (On the flip side I think Obama rode affirmative action into the Ivy League and I think he’s an empty suit, but the public PERCEIVES him to be smart.)
Anyway, with Palin’s perception you can deny it, fling mud about it, whine about it, but in the end it is an uphill battle.
Wrong docdaneeka
Darth_Paleo Saturday, February 7th at 12:49PM EST (link)These minds of mush were going to vote for Obama regardless of who the Republican was doc. Informed voters tend to vote Republican. The ones that voted for Obama just wanted a reason to dis Palin because of her being a threat to Obama. Why do you think they kept trying to compare Obama’s experience to that of Palin’s? Candidates win elections by solidifying their base and winning the majority support among undecided voters. Obama fanatic voters are still going to vote for him regardless of who his opponent is in 2012. That’s my point. This so called strong perception that Palin isn’t bright is coming from where doc? Did you know that 76 million or 46% of registered voters didn’t vote in last year’s presidential election and Obama won in the popular count only 6 million? Are 58 million that voted for McCain and Palin aren’t going to vote for Palin this time around if is the Republican Presidential candidate doc? I seriously doubt that. McCain was the reason red states fell to Obama allowing him to win. McCain turned off conservatives. Palin is the only reason I voted for McCain, and I bet tens of millions of others that voted for McCain felt the same way. McCain didn’t have huge support until he picked Palin. Once again doc, I’m just throwing down facts here. A candidate that can’t sure up their own base are normally the ones that have the problem.
The number issue from voters based on the exit polls was the ECONOMY. If the economy is going to be like I believe it will be, Obama will lost a lot of the independent and issue voter support that he had this time around. Obama has to now defend a record. The platitudes of hope and change can’t be used anymore, He doesn’t have Bush around to blame nor a Republican controlled congress in which to shield his failures. The media wont’ be able to prop up Obama’s first term and attack his opponent like they did last year. A lot of the variables have changed. Why did Reagan destroy Carter in 1980 doc? The media threw everything at him, so why didn’t it work? In the end, it has to come down to issues. I don’t play into perceptions doc, I deal with reality. When Palin does something FACTUAL that is wrong or questions her ability, then I will address it as such. I’m simply not going to cow tow to the opinions of people and the media that wouldn’t’ vote for ANY REPUBLICAN anyways.

Hey, you're the one who demanded
docdaneeka (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 12:19PM EST (link)polling data.
Produce your own.
Seriously, your little game on this is lame. If you are going to demand a poll proving most people think she’s not bright, but you can’t produce one to disprove it, then it’s nothing but a cheap trick. If such a poll existed, you wouldn’t have had to quote so many conservatives to try to prove that she really is smart…you would have gone with your nonexistent poll.
And if your SO SURE that everyone deep down really think that she is an intellectual heavyweight, then why do you have to run blogs like this trying to convince people she IS smart?
The obvious answer: Josh Painter KNOWS he is running against the public perception that she isn’t bright.
You jump to all sorts of conclusions
Josh Painter (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 2:04PM EST (link)that have no basis in fact. When asked to support your assertions, you demand that others provide evidence to disprove them.. When called on it, you change the argument, claiming your opponent said something he did not.
For instance, you said, “And if your (sic) SO SURE that everyone deep down really think (sic) that she is an intellectual heavyweight…”
Go back. Read my post. Where did I ever state that EVERYONE thinks she’s intellectual heavy weight? Where I did I ever state that I’m sure that everyone does?
I did not. I simply responded to a blog post which claimed that Palin was not smart. I provided a number of linked quotes to some pretty impressive people who said that she is smart.
Now you claim that I KNOW I’m running against public perception when you can’t even offer a shred of evidence of what that public perception is. Yet you still display the sheer arrogance to assume to tell us what it is.
Debate is not your strong suit. Logic doesn’t appear to be, either.

It’s a simple question Josh:

You can continue to be arrogant and fling mud, but in the end you can’t escape the obvious truth here: YOU KNOW you are running against a widely held perception that she isn’t smart.

Oh, and while I’m at it, I don’t think “smart” is a particularly important thing for a chief executive. I would rate “good judgment”, “solid principles”, “courage”, and “relevant experience with accomplishments” all way above “smart”. And as far as “intellectual”, that’s a net minus.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 11:47AM EST (link)I’ve had the displeasure on more occasions than I can count of having entry level Ivy grads working in my organizations. To a person the grads from Brown, Harvard and Yale were self centered, obnoxious, and privileged under-performers who expected that they would get a pass on life because of their “university”. I’ve taken more than a little pleasure in removing them from my organizations and replacing them with people who could and would perform.
Given a choice, for an entry level non-technical (engineering, law, medical, scientific) job, I’ll take a high school grad with four years experience in an infantry company over a Summa Ivy every time. They understand the fundamental concepts of work, of accomplishment, of personal responsibility, of being part of a team, of getting the job done with insufficient resources, of understanding that the answer isn’t in the back of the book, of understanding that “perfect” is the enemy of “good”, and they understand the basic concept of a chain-of-command. None of that stuff is taught at a place with Ivy walls any more.
And in fairness to Ivys, grads from Dartmouth and Penn are much better than the ones I noted.

mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 1:00PM EST (link)You started this little mess with three of your opinions:
but her running for higher office (presidency or vice presidency) isn’t going to work well at all.
That’s a pretty ridiculous statement for starters. It’s the other side of the coin from “Palin’s our best choice for ’12.” Neither of them are rooted in anything that even closely resembles what will be reality in ’12. First of all, we don’t have a clue what the big issues will be in ’12. How much of BO’s Marxist agenda is going to get passed? What will happen in the midterms? Will we get attacked by terrorists at home or abroad and what will our response be? What will the economy look like? And then there’s always the question of who else in Republican ranks will shine by then? Oh, and what will Palin accomplish by ’12? Since these are some of the major questions that will drive the ’12 electorate and NONE of them are answerable or even SWAGable right now your “opinion” is simply worthless.
Yeah, conservatives love her and think she’s smart. Pretty much everyone else thinks she’s not. I know you’ll vigorously deny this, but the general consensus among your average Joes is that she’s not bright.
Again, you’re tossing out “opinion” not fact. Where do you see any great groundswell of “conservatives who think she’s smart”? We’ve seen conservatives who like her positions on various issues, we’ve seen conservatives who like her presentation and delivery, we’ve seen conservatives who like her legislative agenda in Alaska. What we haven’t seen is a single discussion – prior to this inane tripe – about whether she’s “smart”. And no polling on it either. You haven’t produced any facts to back up your opinion, just more opinion. Please link to a poll referencing Palin and “smart”. Note, not whether they want her to be the candidate, stick to your original thesis that “conservatives think she’s ‘smart’”.
We need to win this next election, and handicapping ourselves with Palin right from the get-go would be a major mistake.
And you’ve got something other than your opinion to back that one up. Just what will the major issues be in ’12? Who will the other candidates be? What will the makeup of the House and Senate be in ’12? What effect will the ’10 Census have on the electoral college? What will the economy look like in ’12? Will Palin get reelected in AK in ’10 and perform well or poorly as governor?
Listen up dolt, you’re just tossing out your opinions and trying to pass them off as facts. That may fly among your friends but it won’t fly here. Your tacky little misdirection at Josh on demanding polling that says Palin “is” smart is typical troll claptrap. You’re the one who leveled the original charges, you’re the one who has to back them up with something other than your opinion. Which you’ve consistently failed to do. Josh was good enough to provide some links to back up his counter to your opinion. You’ve provided your opinion. The people Josh has linked to have some credibility, you have exactly none. And by now, you’re probably in the hole.
And by the way, my noting that you’re a dolt isn’t name calling it’s simply a statement of observable fact.
You’ve been specifically asked several times to produce some sort of objective evidence to back up your opinion. You’ve not only refused and ignored the requests, you’ve basically said that you didn’t have to provide any back up. You’ve said that it is up to others to provide hard evidence to refute your opinion. Well, that’s not how it works in the real world.
You should feel free to go away and sulk someplace because given your standard of debate/discussion you’re not going to do well here at all. We refer to posters like you as “chum for a slow day”. And if it’s slow I can guarantee you that you’ll fed upon by the Redstate sharks.

Once again,

I read exceptionally well kid.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 6:57PM EST (link)And once again, I’ll explain it to you. You said:
Bottom line, you presented as fact that the general population thinks Governor Palin isn’t very bright.
Josh replied to your “statement of fact” by requesting some backup:
Unlike kos, here at Redstate we expect people to either note that they are offering their “opinion” or backup what they are offering as “fact” with at least a link to the source. You have steadfastly refused to do either. Rather, you engage in typical Moby behavior by demanding a link that proves you wrong. Doesn’t work that way, kid.
Now then, let’s move on to what you keep insisting is your “proof”. Recall that you were asked to provide documentation and a link to polling that indicated that the American people think Governor Palin isn’t “smart”. And what do you give us?
You were asked for polling on whether Gov Palin is smart and you give us polling, without a link, that addresses her favorable/unfavorable rating. Earth to Putz: not the same thing.
As far as
that’s simply dissembling at it’s best. Governor Palin has an arguably better resume than Obama, Biden or McCain. At least in the last 20 years she’s run something other than her mouth and had to make decisions that counted and for which she could be held accountable. None of the others have that distinction.
As far as me being in denial, you’re not even close on that one. I don’t give a rip about any of the proposed candidates right now. We’ve got a Marxist President and Congress to try to deal with and that takes precedence over the ’12 elections. And the ’10 elections take precedence over the ’12 elections. See me in ’11 and I’ll be concerned about our nominee because then we’ll have a better idea what the real issues will be and who will be running. Until then, it doesn’t matter.
At this point kid, you’ve managed to piss me off, you’ve pissed off Achance, you’ve irritate the dickens out of half a dozen other people, you’ve gotten Martin Knight to make fun of you and you’re irritating Moe. The best you should hope for is a visit from HappyBunny and quick harpoon from Moe. It's not an either or choice.
docdaneeka (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 11:03AM EST (link)Our choices aren’t that we either have to go with Palin or let the media pick someone like McCain again (who wouldn’t even defend basic conservative principles).
Find a real conservative that hasn’t made a fool of him- or herself in the national media.
If Sarah Palin truly is our only option then it is a sad, sad day for conservatives. We have to have someone else that can fight for conservatism–which works–against socialism–which doesn’t. You know, someone the general public has respect for on an intellectual level.
If she truly is it then I would fight for her, but it’s not a fight we are going to win. I really think our side sucks at politics. The ideas are sound, but our ability to present them and point out why socialism doesn’t work sucks.
I don't mean this as condescending as it sounds
Ben Howe (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 11:20AM EST (link)but you’re just falling for the templates of MSM. The majority of American’s do NOT feel how the big 3 & CNN tell them to.
The template the entire time Reagan was president was that he was a bumbling idiot, but he won in landslides. Bush was an “idiot” too, he won re-election with over 3 million votes to spare. The “not smart” thing is used in every election cycle. They look at Republicans like the Sith. Always two there are. The evil one and the idiot.
Nixon/Ford – Nixon = Evil; Ford = Dumb
Reagan/Bush – Reagan = Dumb; Bush = Evil
Bush/Quayle – Bush = Evil; Quayle = Dumb
Bush/Cheney – Bush = Dumb; Cheney = Evil
During the campaign they had to have a “dumb” one since they’d already created a template for McCain, so dumb is revealed again. No matter WHO we choose, they are going to try to convince everyone that they “have made a fool of themselves” and are “not smart. So what’s the point in trying to find a candidate they will think is “smart”? It won’t happen.
The media presents their template as “generally accepted” but it is just what they wish was generally accepted. She hasn’t made a fool of herself. I wouldn’t believe in her if I thought she couldn’t present a good case to America for experience and intellect.
Don’t fall for this crap.

docdaneeka (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 12:28PM EST (link)but how could I possibly be falling for what the media wants me to when I think highly of her?
Not to logical here.
What I am talking about is REALITY. I’d like us to start incorporating it into our campaign plans.
Right now the REALITY is that the media and liberals SUCCESSFULLY smeared her and made a fool of her.
Do I think it’s fair? No.
Do I buy their picture? No.
Is the reality that they successfully did this? Yes.
Is the reality that many conservatives are in denial about this? Yes.
My opinion was an has always been that we should have SAVED her for 2012. We prematurely rushed her out there with a scant record and poor handling and it was a disaster. We wasted her on McCain.
I didn't say
Ben Howe (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 1:15PM EST (link)you thought she was stupid. I’m saying you’re falling for the idea that this “dumb republican” brand in the MSM rhetoric is making an impact on the public. It’s not. They try it every time. It doesn’t work.
What I’m telling you not to fall for is the idea that simply because the same people who always call republicans dumb are calling her dumb somehow means she’s not a viable candidate.
And as to the idea that we jumped the gun or should have saved her is just a bad idea. We need more celebrities in the party if we’re going to succeed. We should be hyping our leaders wherever we go.

civil truth (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 12:00PM EST (link)The silver lining is that the American people will know that the media are government-controlled and thus know that they’re getting the party line rather than there being any pretence of “objectivity” and “independence”.
Then people will be able to weigh what they hear accordingly – and the question is how much dissent will be allowed and how much dissemination non-party views will be able to achieve.

In "The Truth" there is no news and in "The News" there is no truth.
Achance (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 12:11PM EST (link)was the attitude of the Soviet citizens towards Pravda and Isvestia. But the distinction is that Soviet citizens had almost no access to even remotely reliable alternative sources of news. For the moment anyway, we do.
That said, where government is a major player in the economy especially, it can do all sorts of things to reward its friends and punish its enemies in the media. They don’t really have to enact a “fairness doctrine” in statute. They can by regulation require that certain government programs be advertised on, say, the radio and put money up for that advertising, verry attractive sums of money. Then they say that the program can only be advertised on stations or networks that give equal time. Likewise, newspapers; a government can heavily subsidize a newspaper by requireing that all job openings and all legally required notices be published in the newspapers. A newspaper will behave itself to keep that money coming in. There’s all sorts of ways to do things.

If they're smart, they just tilt the playing board, as you note
civil truth (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 12:28PM EST (link)Obama has this game down well with his controversial actions on weekends and shielded by the noise of the stimulus bill. There’s all sorts of sub rosa methods for producing stimulus to “encourage” certain reponses – straight out of Skinner.
Subverting the press is like HIV knocking out the CD4 cells; when you subvert the watchdog, the agent that reports on events and throws light on the deeds of darkness, then these deeds of darkness can proliferate unchecked and kill the patient.
Our major hope is for overreach so that people recognize what’s going on and decide to bypass the official press and try a marrow transplant before it’s too late.

Oh, they WILL overreach, the question is
Achance (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 12:46PM EST (link)will there be anyone with the power to do anything about it. The last time they almost took over, we still had a very powerful manufacturing economy that really didn’t want to be turned overr to the “workers committee” or nationalized. The NAM and the CofC organized the resistence to the communist dominated unions, helped produce a Republican Congress and the Taft-Hartley amendment that reined them in.
Now, most American industry is either dependent on government funding or contracts or heavily regulated. Either of those makes it impossible for them to effectively oppose a major interest group that has power in an Administration. There is a reason that the only place the unions hold power in the private sector are industries that rely on government funding or which are heavily regulated or both. No company in that position can affort to oppose an Administration backed iniative or they’ll either be put out of business or perp walked.

Agree that the domestic trends are grim
civil truth (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 12:55PM EST (link)The wild card this time compared to the 30′s is the ability of international enemies to inflict damage on the U.S. mainland. Pearl Harbor was a pinprick compared to ICBMs or submarines or terrorist squads.
Such attack(s)t will evoke a reaction that will change the rules of the game. Whether those changes will simply cement the preexisting trends or change direction, the game is unpredictable. And even a direction change still is perilous and doesn’t necessarily mean the good guys will prevail,
But at least it won’t be a smooth slide down towards a one-party leftist state from that point forward.

civil truth (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 1:09PM EST (link)And we’re not necessarily talking about a single attack on a single place. And it may be low-intensity rather than high-intensity. Could involve oil shut-off – and breakdown of infrastructure.
The point is that the attention would shift and you’d have a third-party (or parties) involved. That changes the dynamics and the balances. Too many scenarios – most of them bad, but still a very different path than if domestic politics alone are considered.
Even better would be if we could begin to stop them in 2010 before things go irreversibly down the chute.

This is BS – pure politics plain & simple.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

That’s not meant in any context as a comment about the job Governor Palin is doing, but Louisiana has always been a handful when it comes to corruption, poverty, and racial politics, so he has a big task ahead. Success there in taming the LA go along to get along system and associated corruption goes a long way to gaining national recognition.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 3:14PM EST (link)Haven’t we learned that all Republican politicians have been severely maligned and harassed by the MSM (now including the liberal blogosphere)? Jindal’s time will also come, believe me.

Half Tip: Never listen to the liberal MSM. Tell your friends that MSM people nowadays have no credential.
Gee Rod...
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 3:17PM EST (link)I’ve heard that Jindal isn’t really all that smart. He’s a benefactor of affirmative action and he gets his way because people just think he’s black.
He's not black, I believe.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 3:54PM EST (link)You’re probably right. But, I still like him.
Any politician who will not steal my money and guns, won’t force me to socialism, won’t prevent me to practice my religion, and won’t promote abortion to my daughter (I have a baby girl) is FINE with me. Other conservative traits are just a bonus.
I believe Jindal has all my minimum requirements. So he’s just okey for me.
BTW, I don’t like SMART leaders. Such leaders tend to fool themselves by thinking that they can outsmart the people.
But bro, it’s still too early. At the moment, I am very pleased with the work of Eric Cantor in the Congress. He’s a natural leader too.
I really want to give all the Rs a chance this time to do their best in order to find out who’s most deserving of my support in 2012.
I know he's not black.
mbecker908 (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 4:26PM EST (link)He’s Indian. And you missed the snark tag.
I happen to like Jindal right now, but we’ve got a Marxist organization running the country that we’ve got to deal with and these silly discussions about ’12 just distract from that.
He he.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 5:11PM EST (link)I know it’s a snark, bro. But there’s a some element of truth in what you said earlier. Jindal has some vulnerabilities too like the rest of our conservative leaders with regards to the attacks of the liberal, Dem-propagandist MSM.
But in responding to you “seriously”, I’m also trying to help this 4-year Medicine student understand the mindset of the RS community. I think he’s really a conservative. There’s this “natural stubbornness” in his tone that can only found in a true conservative. he he.
Believe me...
Josh Painter (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 7:12PM EST (link)once Bobby Jindal is perceived to be a sufficient threat, the media running dogs will, at the command of their LSD masters, dig up more dirt on the poor guy and his family than you could have thought was possible. The Palin pick was such a surprise to them that they had to drop the oppo books they were building on Mitt, Cantor, Pawlenty and the others and rush to Alaska to start sniffing around.
They will investigate everyone Jindal has ever even remotely known in his life, and they will be looking for those among them who ever got crosswise with Bobby over anything. The larger the axe someone has to grind, the more the media hounds will pay under the table for the dirt. The less dirt they are able to dig up on him… the more stuff they will simply make up. It will be planted on the nutroots blogs to begin with, and then work its way “up” to CNN and MSDNC. Then the rest of the alphabets, the NY Slimes, etc. will pile on.
They will literally try to destroy Jindal. God help his wife, kids and any other relatives, too.

The problem w/ Gov. Palin
woodsman (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 10:40AM EST (link)is that the left perceives her as a threat. When she came on board the McCain campaign and then gave a couple of speeches the left came unhinged.
They saw someone who had the same reactions from the Right as the Left did for Obama. And… if she garnered that much attention to reinvigorate the Right then she was a threat to be taken down.
I think that’s it pure and simple. The fact that she was able to do what she did and how she was received by the people sent the Left into full-blown derangement.
Goodness, a Palin dust-up and I'm not in it!
Achance (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 11:29AM EST (link)Since I know her and the rest of you don’t beyond soundbites, press releases, and canned speeches, it depends on how you define “smart.” She has a very quick brain and processes information quickly. She’s very clever and quite ruthless politically except she probably has too much loyalty to old friends/family and takes things too personally, e.g. the so-called Troopergate mess.
Is she smart as Ivy League elites would define that word? No. She, like most real people in America, is not indoctrinated to the canon of learning and body of thought and expression that they use to define smart. Frankly, you can’t be one of those and get elected here or any any other rural area I know anything about. As an example, Democrat Tony Knowles was a Yale graduate, but when he ran for governor he touted his service as a paratrooper and his small business experience, not his Ivy League background, and usually Democrats and D constituencies are favorable to fancy educations.
Gov. Palin will NEVER be accepted by the elites. The best parallel because they are so different politically is to Gov. Jimmy Carter. The elites look down on Georgia the same way they look down on Alaska or any other place that isn’t in the Northeast or California. Since he’s from Chicago, even BHO would be dismissed as just another knuckle-dragging machine politician if he weren’t Black. Those of you that are old enough will recall that Pres. Carter NEVER had the support and often had the outright condescention of the DC elites left and right. Consequently, since these are the people that the MSM fawn over, they’ll have to trash Gov. Palin in order to stay on the A-list for party invitations.

Palin has millions of supporters that can't even vote YET
Darth_Paleo Saturday, February 7th at 11:52AM EST (link)The media wanted Obama as President at all cost, and Palin was the threat to that happening period. If Obama’s popularity stays around the level that it is. What sense would it make in an unknown candidate or a Republican that lost in the primaries last year? Palin does have the star power to match Obama. Can anyone tell me where she screwed up in the debate against Biden? Liberals had to say that the debate was “toned down”, because they couldn’t admit she beat Biden badly. Her debate with Biden was the most watched debate since Reagan vs Carter. Her debate was more watched then all three of Obama’s debate with McCain. The only negative from a factual stand point that I can say about Palin was that she couldnt’ be herself. She had to act the way the McCain campaign wanted her to act, and they handled her wrong from the beginning. People connect with this woman because she isn’t the “polished liberal politician”. It would be beyond stupid to overlook a potential diamond in the rough. A great sport scout is able to identify talent that others overlook or dismiss. Obama won by 6 million votes in the popular. They’re are tens of millions of young girls that love Palin to death, but weren’t old enough to vote for her. In 2012, these women will be able to vote. The perfect strategy would be to play on Palin’s rock star personality to the millions of young girls that will be able to vote in 2012. There is a sea of potential voters that can care less what the MSM thinks about Palin. Think outside the box.

That’s what W spent 8 years trying to do. And McCain has made a career of it. And the end results are that they end up pandering and simultaneously turning their backs on the Base that elected them. I don’t think so, Sir.
you said she should:
“Learn to discipline herself to stay focused on the conservative Base”.
Go find some of her speeches and read them.
I think you will find she is allready there.

And how would you define...
Darvin_Dowdy (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 8:58PM EST (link)…a conservative? Would a conservative go to Washington DC as Gov Palin did last weekend for the purpose lobbying Mitch McConnell to pass the Obama SPlan? Undermining the united House Republicans? Would a conservative pass the most radical greenie environmental plan in her state surpassing that of California? Not the direction that this conservative wants to see the GOP move in. Here:
http://www.redstate.com/darvin_dowdy/2009/02/01/palin-and-gop-govs-hand-obama-a-bipartisan-prize/
You know it takes more than just “hockey Mom” and “Joe Six Pack” emotional rhetoric to be connected w/Middle America. DD
You didn't answer the Boot Camp thing; and for defining a conservative,
gekster (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 9:21PM EST (link)I define it as Sarah Palin.
as for going to Washington stuff:
I posted this somewhere here;
The article only mentions Sister Sarah once;
“The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, planned to meet in Washington this weekend with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and other senators to press for her state’s share of the package.”
It doesn’t say if she is for ,or against the pokulas.
A reason could be;
“For governors, it’s free money — they get the benefits and they don’t have to pay the costs of raising the revenues,” Frazier said.
By the same reasoning, I could say that Mrs. Palin IS running for the Presidency in 2012 by using this article from the same person writer..

The point I was trying to make..
Darvin_Dowdy (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 9:43PM EST (link)…is that as soon as GOP politicians get elected, they seem to forget and ignore those that elected them. They’re distracted by special interests, NGO’s and foreign governments. The voting Base is forgotten until election time comes around again. So far, Sarah hasn’t shown me anything that would lead me to believe that she’d be any different. DD
I would have taken that point first if you had said it first. And you still didn't answer the Boot Camp Thing.

Bootcamp? Oh indulge me...
Darvin_Dowdy (Diary) Monday, February 9th at 8:38AM EST (link)…in the use of a little hyperbole. A metaphor or 2? Would that Palin and others in the GOP hierarchy travel around the nation and get in touch with the real Base. And a political rally doesn’t cut it. This would be something she’d have to impose on herself since there is no real bootcamp. You see the GOP elites prefer to stay detached and at arms length or better from the Base. Now granted, Sarah is a bit better than most gop politicians but far from where she needs to be. DD

penguin2 (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 12:54PM EST (link)Let me tell you about the power of Palin. Our family is Republican-have always voted same. We are also very low key people-not activists. When Sarah Palin came on the scene, we not only started to believe that McCain actually had a chance, we became active with our time and treasure(what little was left). We also met others who responded in the same way; becoming active and involved in the campaign. None of us had done so before.
When we first heard her speak-the day McCain picked her- many people were excited to hear someone who appeared to be one of us. Someone with common sense and decent values, who was also able to articulate our beliefs about ourselves and our country. Those that had a negative response to her feel threatened. People who responded positively saw her as genuine and decent.
This last election awakened some of us. We are remaining active and hopefully, our numbers will grow. Thank you Redstate.

Palin and elitism
Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 1:44PM EST (link)The reply button is not working for me on this thread for some reason. I just wanted to ay that there are a lot of people out there that have strong anti-establishment and anti-elitism sentiments that we can tap. I am one of the few who stands by W. He had walk and talk of West Texas, but many still saw him as Daddy’s boy, a privileged president’s son. A skull and bones product of Yale. A guy who never had a real job. I live in a working class Democratic stronghold and they could never get past this. Palin upsets the elites because she is the real deal working class hero. Feminist hate her for obvious reasons.
I am from Massachusetts and I even I can see Palin’s appeal here. I love her upbringing. My father and my brothers are all commercial fishermen; work boots, paint crusted jeans, beer drinking, truck driving, Labrador riding shot gun types. And even up here in rural Massachusetts, people have a sense that she is “one of them”. That is why she is special.
Sarah is lighting in a bottle. Let’s not over analyze it. The timing might not be right and she may never materialize as a candidate. But we cannot let external forces choose our standard bearers. It’s ironic that Palin is the anti-McCain. External forces created the circumstances that led to the ascension of McCain. They want another appeaser like McCain or somebody who reinforces negative Republican stereotypes like Huckabee. We must choose and protect our standard bearers. Even if she never runs, we need Sarah as a force within our party, especially among young women.
I agree Swamp_Yankee
penguin2 (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 2:52PM EST (link)Your point about Palin being the anti-McCain is good. That’s why they did not always seem to be on the same page. Also, your description of hard-working, down-to-earth and common sense Americans are found on both sides. I believe that if Sarah had been introduced sooner more of the “real” Americans would have voted for the ticket. Make no mistake, McCain lost, but not by nearly as much as it would have been without Sarah.
Regardless of who our candidate is in 2012, Sarah Palin does effectively reach many people.

Personally...
mikefisk (Diary) Saturday, February 7th at 2:07PM EST (link)…have I found Palin intelligent? Not especially. She’s not dumb, but she currently seems to only have a partial subset of the wits she needs to survive the Washington political climate. She doesn’t seem to be an ideas person, and, most seriously, she didn’t really seem to notice that her own handlers were stabbing her in the back until it was too late.
However, is she capable? Certainly. She’s proven herself to be a shrewd, effective manager, and could definitely be, with a bit of study, a force in Presidential politics in years to come. I’d give her another look come 2016, although 2012 is probably too soon.

Sarah Palin Not Smart, Or Qualified. Oh REALLY?
Gary (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 3:21PM EST (link)I read this back and forth between fellow conservatives and I shake my head and say: “Are you guys kidding me?”
Sarah Palin is a very good Governor. With TONS of real world experience:
City Council Woman, Wasilla, Alaska
Mayor, Wasilla , Alaska. Two terms, term limited out.
President of the Alaska Conference of Mayors.
Chairman. Alaska Oil And Gas Conservation Commission. The largest oil and gas regulatory board of it’s kind in the nation. STRONG ETHICS REFORM
CURRENTLY:
Governor Of Alaska.
Chairman of The Interstate Oil And Gas Compact Commission. As voted in by other Governors.
Chairman. National Governors Association’s Natural Resource Committee. As voted in by the other 49 Governors.
Palin is a recognized authority on energy, and environmental issues.
Vice Chairman. National Republican Governor’s Association.
Commander in Chief of the only National Guard in the nation that is on permanent deployment.
Commander -In-Chief of the Alaska Defense Force, ADF, a federally recognized militia that is part of Homeland Security’s national defense plan. This militia answers to the Governor. And can be used as Police, or for national defense.
As Governor of Alaska, Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism.
Governor Palin just hosted a delegation from nations that are direct trading partners with Alaska, including Sergey Kislyak is the newly appointed ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States.
Also at the meeting were Consuls General from the Russian Federation, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Hungary, Norway, South Korea, The Philippines, as well as representatives from Canada and China.
“Members of the Alaska consular corps also participated, including: Karen Matthias, of Canada; Hideo Fujita, of Japan; Hee-chul Kim, of South Korea; and Jose Luis Cuevas, of Mexico. They were joined by honorary consuls of the Czech Republic, Poland, Finland, Seychelles, and Norway”
Governor Palin just signed the license to build the TransCanada natural gas pipeline. Something Alaska has been trying to do for 50 years.
She went in, cleaned up the process and got it done. This is the largest infrastructure project in history.
Environmentalists love this.
Alaska is sitting on 400 TRILLION cubic feet of natural gas. That is more than all of the world’s oil reserves!
And natural gas is the cleanest burning fuel there is. It’s almost zero emissions.
Even better, every major car manufacturer makes cars that burn compressed natural gas, and have for decades.
There are millions of trucks, cars, and buses in use daily.
Just a few weeks ago, Governor Palin announced that Alaska will not only meet the plan Mr Obama has for renewable energy, she will DOUBLE it!
Obama wants to see America get 25 percent of it’s energy from renewable resources. well, Alaska already gets 25 percent of it’s energy from renewables! So, she has pledged to have Alaska get 50 percent of it’s energy from renewables by 2025.
She and her husband, Todd still own a small commercial fishing business. The season is quite short. But as time permits, you’ll see her out there working the nets with the men. She’ll bring in those big fish with the best of them.
Once, she even refused to take it easy after her fingers were crushed in an accident when two boats collided. She went to the doctor and was back at it the same day.
She knows exactly what hard work looks like, and isn’t afraid to take refresher courses from time to time!
So tell me again that Governor Palin, with more Chief Executive experience than most, isn’t smart, or qualified.
And if you think she isn’t a shrewd politician, read the letter she just sent B.Hussein Obama. In her typical style, she not only brings up an important issue, but calls him out to act. She is the master of this kinda deal. She knees him in the groin, while smiling!

I’m sorry, but Sarah Palin is exactly who we need in DC!

reaganwarrior (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 7:51PM EST (link)even if her official position on it is no. How many governors
Josh Painter (Diary) Sunday, February 8th at 8:10PM EST (link)have said that they would refuse to accept the money? Not even Sanford, who has been the most outspoken critic of the stimulus among all the governors.
Palin simply wants energy and defense projects in her state to be funded IF the stimulus is passed. All of those projects are in the national interest, and the pipeline project, which Alaska has already put up $500 million of its own money for, is a good investment for Uncle Sam. When completed, it will bring cheaper natural gas to the lower 48 than the LNG we are currently importing from foreign suppliers.
Don’t be putting too much stock in the AP, btw. Their record of truth and accuracy isn’t exactly spotless.
