President Barack Obama made a world-class gaffe in front of the entire planet’s press during his news conference in Strasbourg, France. The transcript was released by the White House on April 4:
Q Sonja Sagmeister from a little country, Austria, from Austrian Television. Mr. President, you said you came here to learn and to listen. So a quite personal question — what did you learn from your personal talk with the European leaders? And did this change in a certain way your views on Europe and its politics?
PRESIDENT OBAMA: It’s an interesting question. I had already formed relationships with many of them. Some of them I had met when I traveled through Europe before my election. Some of them I had met because they came to Washington after the election. This is the first time I’ve been in a forum with so many of them at the same time.
I’m extraordinarily impressed by the quality of leadership. I am constantly reminded that although there are cultural differences that are important and that we have to be sensitive to, what we have in common between Europe and the United States so vastly exceeds any differences that we have; that we should not forget why we are allies, and we should be careful about some of the easy stereotypes that take place on both sides of the borders.
It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There’s a lot of — I don’t know what the term is in Austrian — wheeling and dealing — and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics.
But I think it’s a testimony to the success of the European Union, as well as NATO, that on very important issues, each leader seems to be able to rise above parochial interests in order to achieve common objectives. And I think that has accounted for some of the extraordinary success and prosperity of Europe over the last several years.
So what’s so embarrassingly wrong about what the president said? Only this:
German is the official language of Austria. Worldwide, 10 million native speakers speak German and it ranks as the tenth most spoken language in the world. The total number of German speakers leaps to around 130 million people if non-native speakers are included. Linguists class German as an Indo-European language. It is also the official language of Germany, Belgium, Liechtenstein, and part of Switzerland, Luxembourg, and others.
In other words, this is no such language as “Austrian.” Isn’t there someone on the White House staff, a director of Protocol or something, whose job it is to make sure the leader of the free world knows these things? Or did no one say anything because they assumed that it was reasonably common knowledge?
You probably recall the howls from the drive-by media and the leftosphere when Fox News’ Carl Cameron said that he was told “by folks” - folks without names, apparently - that Sarah Palin didn’t know that Africa was a continent. The press and “progressive” bloggers had a field day with it, even though it was only a rumor and had never been confirmed by anyone willing to put their name behind it.
For that, Gov. Palin was maligned. A “dubious grasp of geography,” sniffed HuffPo’s Nicholas Graham. Wonkette, dripping with superiority, posted, “And did we mention that she thought Africa was a country, and not a continent? Wait until she hears about Australia: it’s both.” Salon’s Anthony Freed wrote: “Stunningly, but not surprisingly, the gal who was 3% of the vote and an old man’s heart beat away from the presidency thinks Africa is a country in and of itself.” It would later come to light that the “Martin Eisenstadt” who took credit for passing the tidbit along to Fox News does not exist. It was a hoax. But many Palin critics still believe the continent meme, even though it’s never been more than a rumor.
Obama’s ignorance of Austria and what language is spoken there, however, is a unicorn of a different hue. It’s on the official White House transcript. It’s on video (at the 28:30 mark). Many people know that German is spoken in Austria, and they didn’t have to look it up. So where are the Obama-worshippers on this? They are curiously silent. No snickering from HuffPo, no acidic Salon snorting, no “dumb as a bag of hammers” diaries from Wonkette. The double standard runs deep and wide, and there’s no ceiling, glass or otherwise, limiting the heights to which the Left’s hypocrisy can soar.

clifwest Sunday, April 5th at 6:43PM EDT (link)Sooner or later, the truth will surface about the elite colleges with their narrow views about everything. I completed four years of undergraduate work and five years of graduate work and am still learning. I am seventy-five years old and will continue to learn until I die. Ivy league colleges give the impression that once you have graduated from one of them, you know everything about everything. Nothing could be farther from the truth. If you don’t continue your studies all your life, you become as obsolete as your education, and limited. I received my first degree in 1954. Imagine how much has happened since then and not being aware of everything as it happens makes you as limited as someone who never attended college. For that matter, some of the most intelligent people I have enteracted with in my life never attended college. I have relied more on common sense than any of the formal education I ever received. It is great if you have both and sad when you lack either.
Excellent comment, clifwest! And I agree wholeheartedly.

My experience with Ivy League "brilliance"
Next93 Sunday, April 5th at 8:45PM EDT (link)I worked for a while under a marketing VP with a Stanford MBA, and came away from the experience distincly underwhelmed. Truth be told, I don’t have much respect for executives in general; most of the ones I’ve met seem to have been promoted on the basis of height, fashion sense, and (unfounded) arrogance. But this one really stood out in the lackluster department.
He’d never spent a day working in our industry; he didn’t understand our proprietary technology, the needs of our customers, or the strengths and weaknesses of the substituting and competing products. That wouldn’t have been a problem, except that he didn’t seem to feel that it mattered; I got the distinct impression that he felt that he was too important to be concerned with such mundanities.
He never showed a trace of creative thinking where it mattered (he segmented the market according to industries instead of customer needs) or leadership (when our lead software engineer went off on his own tangent and developed a new product that orphaned our existing customer base without a migration path, he accepted it and set about crafting impressive-sounding product names and logos and ordering new collaterals).
The overall impression I got was that the Stanford MBA program was more concerned with image than substance, and imparted only two “facts”:
1) No one who has a Stanford MBA can ever be wrong
2) No one who doesn’t have a Stanford MBA can ever be right.

But the double-standard is horrendous. If this was Bush or Sarah Palin, it would be just more fodder for the MSM grist machine.
Obama’s “Special Olympics” comment is another example. The press had no choice to report on that for a day or so since it was said on such a prominent stage as the “Jay Leno Show” (not to mention the MSM had been reporting for days about Obama’s upcoming appearance). However, it quickly died on the vine. No snickering satires on Saturday Night Live. No top 10 lists on David Letterman.
Now, I don’t think Obama was trying to insult the mentally handicapped. He just made a bad joke. However, if nothing else, it was an incredibly dumb comment coming from one who is supposed to be so supremely intelligent.

Obama the linquist
fisk2521 Sunday, April 5th at 8:10PM EDT (link)It boggles the mind that Obama did not know that the Austrians speak German…. one would hope that he has spent a good deal of his time at Harvard studying diplomacy, geography and especially history in order to know how to avoid the same mistakes of the past. . Apparently he did not.
This error is major - - not a slight one because it reveals either his ignorance or his laziness in preparing for this trip and the speeches he was to give. Either way, it’s disturbing.
I clearly recall that during his campaign, Obama derided the ‘ugly American’ saying we traveled in Europe and arrogantly neglect to learn the language of the country we visit. All of his speeches during this visit were in English, so I’m assuming he doesn’t speak anything else…. - - but of course, if you’re going to speak the language of the country you visit, you first have to know what that language is.

As a handler, you work on issues and keeping the various G20 nations’ policies straight. You just have to assume that the President of the United States, who possesses a postgraduate degree, has certain basic knowledge any sharp high school junior would know.
In Obama’s case, it comes back to bite you in the asp, but you just have to assume it or he’d never be “ready” to go anywhere or receive any foreign leaders . . . which, come to think of it, might be the best solution anyway.

Next93 Sunday, April 5th at 9:46PM EDT (link)Personally, I’d prefer it if we could afford to concentrate on the big stuff (Lord knows, there’s enough of it), but we live in a society where news stories about the president threatening mob action against bankers gets lost in the latest update on Miley Cyrus and American Idol.
Hammering on this sort of crap is exactly how the media managed to discredit Jerry Ford, leading to the *first* Carter administration. We’re never going to be able to paint this clown as a socialist until we crack the Rock Star veneer, and these sorts of things (along with the Manchester article on his stammering without a teleprompter) are the ony way to do that.

one problem is
mom2oneson Sunday, April 5th at 9:58PM EDT (link)Many Americans don’t understand because they are clueless too. Here in the south many people seem to be very clueless about geography, history and world events Many don’t know if big cities in the US are a state or a city. They certainly do not know what language is spoken in Austria. The difference is they aren’t claiming to be experts.

ABSOLUTELY! The problem with the two Bushes
papalee Monday, April 6th at 10:42AM EDT (link)Was that they both thought that they could do business with the enemy. Hell, they didn’t even recognize that Democrats were the enemy or could be. And McCain tried the same ‘play nice’ nonsense and we now know where it got him and us.
It seems racist to me.
Tbone Sunday, April 5th at 9:47PM EDT (link)Now everyone will think that black people who get into top universities under affirmative action waivers are really just ignorant buffoons that can’t learn even basic stuff. After all, Obama is great friends with Callyfornia Auhrnuld. One would have thought that Arnie would have given him a two minute briefing on Austrialian other than it is not one of our 57 states.
As for Hope, I haven’t yet lost mine that King Barry knows something, anything, anything, come on there must be something he knows?

Mike gamecock DeVine Sunday, April 5th at 10:05PM EDT (link)consider same petty re Bush, and one of the main arguments the press and the Dems make for electing Dems is that they are smarter. And even Obama made a very on point and specific argument for his election is attacking the ugly American that goes to France yet can’t say any thing but merci bouquet (sp?) and demanded that slack ass parent must teach their children foreign languages.
So, we simply must call them out.

Everybody who wants to make money in the whole damned World speaks English.
Achance Sunday, April 5th at 11:12PM EDT (link)This is simply snobbish stupidity and a certain amount of xenophobia in non-English-speaking places. We stay a while in Puerto Vallarta most years. Everybody speaks English. My wife and I speak enough Spanish to find the bathroom and get a drink - and to know when we’re being cussed at or insulted. Almost never use Spanish. If you say Gracias, they say Thank you and vice versa; it’s a game.
My only real snobbish peeve about language is lawyers who try to use Latin and can’t pronounce it. You don’t need to use Latin these days but if you do, get it right; it isn’t rez jew dee ka ta, it is race you di ka ta. If you watched Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you know there is no “J” in Latin. It isn’t starry dee si ses, it’s staa ray day kee sis. Trying to pronounce Latin maxims in English sorta marks you. Whenever I was dealing with one of the real snobs, I’d use Latin and then footnote the translation in French. Had to look it all up or get help from experts, but it was fun and made the point.

Obama did his blame America, American arrogance, BS early on....
JLenardDetroit Monday, April 6th at 12:09AM EDT (link)Remember the campaign stops where he was going on about how Americans should learn foreign languages!?!? It was the whole “Arrogance” BS, just like his latest “Blame America,” American arrogance, blah… blah…. blah…. It is how the ultra-Leftist Progressive fools see everything…. While, like you said, peoples all over the GLOBE learn English!!!! Not because they HAVE TO, but because they know it is in their best interest! That is just another thing Lefties don’t like about our own society, that English really is the FIRST language of Business! The only time you need to speak a foreign language fluently...
jcheney Sunday, April 5th at 11:44PM EDT (link)….is:
1) If you go to that particular country (you could learn enough from a book on the plane to get you around). It’s rare to run into anyone in a foreign country that doesn’t speak English.
2) If you have relatives in this country who speak fluently and like conversing.
3) If you like eavesdropping on people when they try to speak another language so you won’t understand them
It’s difficult to retain a foreign language unless you get to practice it. Don’t count on the high school or college classes you had unless you know someone who is fluent to talk to.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen
Achance Sunday, April 5th at 11:55PM EDT (link)was a forty-ish American woman and one of the young Mexican “studs” who haunt PV at a restaurant south of town. She was obviously a high school or maybe college Spanish teacher and she was trying to sorta be the dominant member of the “date” by ordering and such. First, no Mexican man would tolerate a woman ordering or even talking to the waiter. In the better restaurants, the “lady’s” menu doesn’t even have prices and she gets a velvet pillow for her feet. Second, she was speaking this perfect Castilian Spanish that I probably understood better than either he or the waiters understood. Anyway, he finally took over and ordered. I don’t know how the evening workded out, but it wasn’t off to a good start. That said, he probably made the sacrifice.

Liberals really show what they think of Hispanics, when it comes to the "2nd Language" issue....
JLenardDetroit Monday, April 6th at 12:00AM EDT (link)The Liberals constantly drone about how Americans should learn a 2nd Language (presumably, Spanish) … how it is somehow not right or fair for those coming her to the US and want to become citizens should NOT be required to learn English…. How blatantly obvious it is that Liberals just think Hispanics are STUPID and incapable of doing anything (they must have Liberal Democrats to always HELP them) and the Language “pass” they wish to give them is (again, SO OBVIOUS) a demonstration of that!!!! What troubles me is that there are so many of our Hispanic friends that buy into this blatant RACISM toward Hispanics by Liberal Democrats!!!!
If anyone/everyone should be “encouraged” to learn a 2nd Language, why the bleep would it be so “outrageous” to ask people to learn English!?!?!?! There RACISM is so obvious and they are NEVER called on it!

builder20 Monday, April 6th at 10:57AM EDT (link)I now can speak German rather fluently, but it has been a pain in the ass being a native english speaker trying to learn German in Germany! Every time I would start speaking German the person I was talking with would instantly switch to English with “Oh I can practice my english, I am sorry German is such a hard language” and stunt my learning curve!
Now I just let them talk in English but I continue on in German.
What is interesting to see is the “Speak English” feeling in the states is identical to the “Speak German” sentiment here. The roles of Hispanics are nearly identical to those of Turkish people here. Good food, live in the country for years and not speak the language, and are the butts of numerous jokes. For the most part are great hardworking people with a few bad apples that give all of them a bad name, and Illegal immigration is the staple pastime for many of them.
Oh, and in 50 years they will rule this place.
Having lots of kids tends to do that.

Same goes for this mistake; anyone who knows anything about the history of Europe is going to know that the language of Austria is German, just as they’d know that there are German-speaking people in parts of Checkoslovakia and France - that “trivia” has been at the heart of two World Wars in the last century.
It’s amazing to me that someone can get a pre-law degree without a fairly solid understanding of 20th century European history, at least enough to know about the creation of “Greater Germany” prior to the start of WWII.

Having heard all three dialects spoken in rapid succession, I can tell you for a fact that Austrian German and German German aren’t much more than accents.
As an aside, Swiss German is actually a legitimately different dialect.
Hochdeutsch
zerodivisor Monday, April 6th at 10:11PM EDT (link)You probably heard an Austrian speaking Hochdeutsch (High German), which would, indeed should(!), sound more or less like a German speaking Hochdeutsch. There is a distinct Austrian dialect, but I bet you’d have to go pretty far out in the boonies to hear it nowadays. On the other hand, I believe the Swiss are more likely to speak their dialect, which you apparently did hear.
I wonder...

not to be nitpicky
jackhammer Monday, April 6th at 5:03AM EDT (link)but I think the cut & paste about the German language must have a typo…there are definitely more than 10 million native speakers worldwide, given there are 80 million people in Germany alone and virtually all are native speakers, add in the Austrians, the Swiss that speak German, the northern Italians (Südtirol) and some of the other enclaves around the world, the number 100 million would seem much more realistic.
And the Austrian dialect is not in fact dramatically different form the Bavarian German dialect, and in written form and in the form used in journalism and newsreporting referred to as “high german” it is in fact identical, both countries falling under the grammar and spelling determinations of the “Duden”
So why did she axe him that question? nt

I know, I know Bush would never have gotten a pass. And living in Kehl it was really scary to see the Germans lining the streets with (figurative) palm fronds in hand to welcome Obama…
But maybe we should be nitpicking the “European Union is a success” line more than the Austrian one…..most Germans I speak with a very displeased with the EU and if it were up to them Germany would abandon it. That goes for most other Euros I speak with. When you ask, “are you a Euro” they always reply “No I am a ____ (Italian, Swede, ect)”.
Hell the EU jerks just passed a law that you can only have so much salt in Pretzel dough because the common man is to stupid to understand that eating a pretzel will give you a super dose of Sodium. The “I know, but you do not” bull is getting old real fast for those under control of the EU.
