Dave Caves; Sarah accepts his apology (Updated)

Finally, a *real* apology from Letterman

New York Times media columnist Bill Carter reports:

David Letterman directly apologized to Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughters on his program Monday night, saying he took responsibility for a joke that had offended Ms. Palin, her family, and her supporters.

Mr. Letterman opened the desk portion of his show with the apology in which he said he wanted to say he was sorry to “to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.” Two weeks ago on his “Late Show” program on CBS, he had joked about Governor Palin attending a Yankee game with her daughter.

Up against a planned Tuesday rally calling for his firing and a boycott of Letterman’s sponsors by Sarah Palin supporters and others, the late night talk show host apparently decided that he had gotten himself into a war he could not win.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin issued a statement early Tuesday morning after the broadcast of David Letterman’s program, saying that she accepted the late night talk show host’s apology:

“Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve,” she said.

“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”

Embassy Suites had yanked its advertising from CBS’ website, as company spokeswoman Kendra Walker explained:

“We received lots of e-mails from concerned guests and we assessed that the statement that he made was offensive enough to our guests and prospective guests that we elected to take the ads down,”

CBS executives, meanwhile, insist that they put no pressure on Letterman to apologize and that there has been no real impact on advertisers from the protests. And if you believe that, they have some slightly used Letterman jokes they would like to sell you.

Radio talk show host and documentary film maker John Ziegler, contacted before the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate issued her statement of acceptance, had said that a “Fire David Letterman” rally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in New York, would go on as scheduled.

Reaction to this; if Palin were a Democrat and Dave a Republican, would they accept this "apology" and "move on"?

Don Imus (certainly not on our side) went on a begging tour, invited Al Sharpton to his show and apologized most abjectly. It won him nothing. Larry Summers did the same thing, beg and apologize. Same result. Trent Lott …

Why should David Letterman be any different?

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it.

probably so… I would agree with that in that it otherwise just becomes yet another MSM excuse to keep detracting from the ObamAgenda and/or getting any traction for Conservative Candidates. It appears to be a real apology, not the “sorry they were offended” type. There is nothing to be gained by pushing it farther. Thanks for the update, JP.

We don’t have the kind of backup in the media to take this any further like our opposite numbers do. By accepting his apology, Sarah can look gracious to those in the middle; the partisans will never accept anything she does and events like this can drive a wedge between the partisans and the persuadable.

I think what has happened is basically sufficient punishment for the crime, and leaving it at that is the right thing to do.

That said, I can’t help but compare the differences in reaction to Letterman’s words and to Don Imus’s words, both of which said about the same thing. I still think firing Imus was overkill, for what it’s worth. Same goes, but not quite so analogously, for Michael Richards or Mel Gibson. You need more than lack of judgment followed by abject apologies before I’ll think firing is warranted in situations like these.

Clarification:

Jeff Walden Tuesday, June 16th at 12:42AM EDT (link)

(By “Same goes” I meant comparing the responses in those cases to the response in the Imus case, that is — I thought all of them were drawn out for too long after the apologies that should have wiped the slate clean again.)

It's *Still* Not a Real Apology From What I'm Hearing...

…But I’ll need to see the transcript to know for sure.

All I can say is if this is another half-assed apology from Letterman, his goose is cooked.

Whether it's real or not, how is it 'direct'?

bk Tuesday, June 16th at 6:11AM EDT (link)

From the NY Times guy: “David Letterman directly apologized to Gov. Sarah Palin and her daughters on his program Monday night….” Wouldn’t a direct apology mean face to face or on the phone with them?

generally, an apology is rendered

We have put the left on notice that we won’t tolerate this trashing of conservatives anymore. Because it went viral on the internet, there was a huge response that got to the sponsors. And just maybe, the networks are not quite so infallible.

I believe this method would work with the MSM print media too. At least notify some of their advertisers why one is no longer taking a subscription. Thus the advertiser is wasting their dollars.

toughintn Monday, June 15th at 9:14PM EDT (link)

I think a few things forced Letterman into making this somewhat improved, but still lame and convoluted response.

1. NOW put him in their hall of shame.
2. Mark Shields pretty much called him creepy on the Lehrer news show.

When he gets attacked by THOSE people, he pays attention.
Otherwise, he would have kept up the petty defensiveness and mudslinging.

Palin needs to let this go immediately, and rise above the pathetic has-been named Letterman. If she is a statesman, if she is a leader, she needs to act like he’s old news.

Note to Glenn Beck:
I agree that we do NOT want a joke czar, and that Letterman shouldn’t lose his job over this particular situation.

However, this is not Letterman’s first offense. For the past 3 years, he’s been eliminating wide segments of his audience. He is another Bill Maher-wannabe.

Dave willfully substituted broad-based humor for political advocacy during the entire political season of the presidential election. He showed he was most interested in promoting liberal causes (including global warming authors) and clumsily criticizing conservatives by trying to talk “serious” policy with media and political guests. It’s been a train wreck.

He is a vile human being hiding behind the comedian thing.

smitch61 Monday, June 15th at 9:17PM EDT (link)

He has gotten away with this for far too long. He had no business saying anything about anybody’s daughter.. period. Any clear thinking human being knows this.. Sarah Palin will probably become a voice for the miss treatment of all women regardless of political preference.

Bully for him.

Text of Letterman "apology"

JustLeaveMeAlone Monday, June 15th at 10:51PM EDT (link)

David Letterman: “

All right, here – I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week – it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah.”

“But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani … And I really should have made the joke about Rudy…” (audience applauds)

“But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.

“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ – this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly – ” (audience applause) “– thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds)

“Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)

“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” Thomas Jefferson

And Dave, you still don't get it

JustLeaveMeAlone Monday, June 15th at 10:55PM EDT (link)

It isn’t about our “perception” — it IS about your intent.

Never mind Willow or Bristol or Sarah Palin. Let’s pretend it was Michelle Obama and her daughters, instead.

This joke was TASTELESS and OFFENSIVE. It was misogynistic. Words can hurt, and this “joke” was hurtful. And that was your intent — to hurt and slam. You used an innocent bystander, who happens to be a child, to do so.

If you don’t get that, you need to just shut up.

TNJim Tuesday, June 16th at 1:39AM EDT (link)

I didn’t see in that transcript any kind of attempt to apologize for the “slutty flight attendant” “joke” about the governor herself. True, most of the outrage has been directed at the “joke” about the daughter but to me the other joke was at least as reprehensible as what Imus said. Of course, the joke about her daughter went way beyond that.

Just proves to me the only reason he attempted an apology at all about either “joke” is because of the level of outrage being raised and likely pressure from sponsors.

And so, I’m back to the intent, to hurt and slam the Palins.

Don't mess with Sarah

septembergurl Tuesday, June 16th at 12:24AM EDT (link)

That is the message here. It was necessary, apparently, to lay down the rules for the likes of Letterman as to what kind of commentary or “jokes” would be acceptable for a political figure like Gov Palin.

In previous, better times in our great country, it was not necessary to spell out to a loser like Letterman that calling the governor of our biggest state, a mother of five and a devoted wife a “slut” or calling her daughters whores was unacceptable.

Sarah pursued this against the advice of various conservative and RINO pundits, because Letterman had to made an example of — he had to understand the price he would pay for defending his remarks. Being a coward and a lazy buffoon who does not want to lose his choice gig, Letterman caved, as was predictable.

By all means let’s move on — Sarah Palin is a busy woman who has little time for this nonsense — as long as it is understood what the price will be for any miscreant who takes a shot at the Guv’s family.

Amen, Palin is being perceived as having kicked Letterman's ass.

The thing that struck me the most about this "apology"

TNJim Tuesday, June 16th at 3:24AM EDT (link)

was that it seemed to me he was implying that if he had made it plainer the “joke” was about Bristol rather than Willow then he thinks everything would have been all hunky-dory. Wrong, Dave. Frankly, you just shoved your foot a little farther down your throat with that implication. And as I said in my reply to JLMA above I saw nothing in the printed transcript that hinted at an apology to Sarah about the “slutty flight attendant” crack. But, this story says Sarah accepts this apology and as a Christian I suppose I should forgive him, too, but this sort of thing flows all too freely from his mouth and those of other left-leaning “comedians”. I just can’t help but think we’ll hear more “slutty flight attendant” type jokes about Sarah herself from this guy when he thinks the storm over this incident has settled. He just doesn’t like conservative women and Sarah in particular.

God does not think He is Obama.” He said later in the week and again yesterday you wouldn’t believe the emails he got from the left. Nasty stuff, most of them were. Speaking of Rush, he just said today he doesn’t believe the apology was an apology. He thinks it was just another attempt to explain which daughter the joke was about. That’s exactly how I took it. I also agree Sarah should not go on the show, not even to punch him in the mouth! He doesn’t deserve the ratings boost it would give him.

Letterman

No matter what he says now, his first reaction was the real Letterman, a crude neanderthal. He’s trying again because he has to, sponsors are feeling the heat and for no other reason. Imus must be wondering what the deal is.

Letterman SHOULD BE FIRED, on principle, in any event, NOT because sponsors are complaining/withdrawing.

Let him “try to do better” in new employment as a gas station attendant or grocery bagger, if he can find one that will hire him.

Time to move on, indeed...

…Gov Palin will manage this outcome to her advantage, or she won’t. She’s a professional, and knows the risks of overplaying vs. underplaying. Nice dig about Letterman and his ilk still having the opportunityto ‘evolve’. Heh.

Got a nice, personal response back from the Programming Director at my local CBS affiliate, acknowledging my concerns and informing me that he had passed them on to CBS. File his name away for later, if necessary.

That part of the Chattering Classes dependent on viewership and advertisers have been put on notice — there is a line and they just crossed it. We will let this incident drop, but we will “file it away” for easy recall. We know we can hurt you and your sponsors the next time, too, and we know we can shame you into backing down and apologizing. Remember this, because we will.

Forgive, and move on — to Conan O’Brien on NBC. CBS and the Letterman franchise shed some brand equity that they will never retrieve. I’ll follow the Gov’s lead, AND I’ll never watch the Letterman show, again.

Hope it was worth it, Dave, for the few cheap yuks from your peanut gallery. Hope he’s worth it, Mr. Moonves, the $40M/year you pay this guy to alienate half your potential audience.

Palin accepted the apology, and it is her call. I respect that.

Letterman, for all of the foolishness involved, did the right thing to apologize.

We look bigger accepting the apology and moving on than dragging this thing on. But it isn’t for us to look big anyway. Gov. Palin was the one offended, and she determines how far this thing goes. She’s been a class act throughout.
