Palin to Andrea Mitchell: ‘You’re not listening to me’

Reporters go 'up next to the fish' in the 'surreal' world of flyover country.

Gov. Sarah Palin granted interviews to the legacy media yesterday, and each outlet added its own spin to its presentation of the story. One thing is obvious from watching the various videos and reading the stories: they don’t get it. Palin had to scold NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, for instance. “You’re not listening to me,” she admonished the ditzy reporter after Mitchell asked the governor a question she had already answered.

The Palins’ commercial fishing business requires them to be on the water at the peak of the salmon run, which occurs each year around the 4th of July. The media hacks were clearly out of their element, one reporter describing the experience of being with real people while they are doing real work as “surreal.” From the safe cocoon of the New York studio, Diane Sawyer thanked ABC correspondent Kate Snow in Alaska, “Thanks so much for going up next to the fish,” to get the interview. During the interview, Snow pointed out to Palin: “You have some fish guts on you.” Yes, Kate, that tends to happen to people who work on commercial fishing boats. Flyover country is an alien planet, and those of us who live in it are extraterrestrials to the chattering class. They are still looking for their first clue and not even getting warm.

Video of the Mitchell interview is here, CNN here and ABC here. Write-ups of more interviews by Fox News here, TIME magazine here and the Anchorage Daily News here.

Update 1: Via e-mail from Jim Trotter, another example of how out of touch the chatterati are, from today’s round of Palin interviews:

From the TIME Article – the set up the reporter uses to describe the scene:

“The other is a smoke shack for fish. Their catch of the day is hanging from a clothing line strung from the shack to a tree. The driveway is littered with boots, gray-and-red-tipped fishing socks, waders, scooters, tricycles and a green yoga ball with bunny ears for kids to bounce on.”

Green Yoga Ball? How out of touch with America is this reporter that they have never seen this particular toy before? Are you kidding me? And how does an editor miss this?

This reporter has never seen a Hippity-Hop… that is too much!

Update 2: From FRee Repulic:

“Many commentator’s on Sarah Palin’s remark that ‘politically speaking — if I die, I die. So be it’ would not recognize the allusion or context of  ‘And if not’ – neither its use at Dunkirk nor its Biblical reference.

By way of explanation, a FReeper posted this from a Chuck Colson commentary:

One of the most dramatic moments of the Second World War occurred when the British army was helplessly stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk. It turned out to be one of England’s finest hours-and, oddly enough, a telling illustration of the urgent need for Christian apologetics in our day. The time was June 1940 and the place was Dunkirk. The British Expeditionary Force, sent to stem the Nazi advance into Belgium and France, had been pushed steadily back to the sea. A pall fell over England. Hitler’s armies were poised to destroy the cornered Allied army. As the British people waited anxiously, a three-word message was transmitted from the besieged army at Dunkirk: “And if not.” The British recognized instantly what the message meant: “Even if we are not rescued from Hitler’s army, we will stand strong and unbowed.” “And if not” was found in the Book of Daniel, where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego defied Nebuchadnezzar, putting their trust in God The message galvanized the British people. Thousands of boats set out across the Channel in a gallant bid to rescue their army. And they succeeded.

But that was England, a believing nation that no longer exists. In its place we have the U.K., a tiny island lost in the wilderness of secularism. Palin supporters see the resignation as her Dunkirk. Stranded in the governor’s office, she is effecting her own rescue. But they have no doubt that she will amass a much larger fighting force and hit the beaches at a time which is to her advantage.

The governor had probably looked to the example of Esther (4:16) for courage in making her decision to resign, or perhaps Ruth or Daniel or all three. But her biblical reference went right over the heads of the media types, which should come as no surprise. Our once fiercely independent Fourth Estate, like that tiny island, has lost its way.

Not so much because it was Palin because she either will or won’t make it further in politics and one person doesn’t matter really in the grand scheme of things.

Don’t get me wrong because I think things are going to be real interesting in the near with a footloose Palin but still this recc was more for the highlighting the utter stupidity of the entrenched liberal media.

And with their elitist views of the world, they could not possibly condescend to have children, and thus get themselves dirty. I mean the real stuff-as in soil and grass. Thus their rabid pro-abortion stance is to support their lifestyle.

They really sound so pathetic, with their sneering ignorance, I would almost feel sorry for them, if they weren’t so malignant to our country.

      • izoneguy

to worry about the future of this country. The single elites, the unmarried couple who plan to NOT have children, the gay & lesiban crowd are all in it for themselves. They might live another 20 years or as long as 50 more years. As long as they are in it for themselves then they can be a ZERO liability and not have a care in the world.
It is the family man and the soccer mom that will save America. The MSM is a about the me and the now. They don’t get and they won’t get it. Just as the old white haired GOP dudes are wondering what the hell happened – well the bus has left the station and you missed it. See you in 2012.

        • penguin2

Or hopefully 2009, with a governor race or two.

          • GregInFla

Go for it! you won’t regret it!

You know, I had not thought of the fact that the LGBT crowd does not worry about future. New perspective for me.

          • izoneguy

is only worried about getting free healthcare and SS. The future after them be damned.

        • morstar150

I am one of 13 children but I also have a brother who cannot have a family. Does it mean he doesn’t care for the future generations? Maybe he shouldn’t have served in the military.

Although, I always wondered why an athiest would care about anyone else. Why not just get what you can for yourself until it all runs out?

        • JustLeaveMeAlone

I have no children, nor will I ever have any. That doesn’t mean I don’t lie awake at night worrying about the future of my nation.

I love this country. It pains me to think that the opportunity I was blessed with by virtue of being born here will not be available — whether to your kids or to a kid born in India who longs to come here.

A friend of mine used to say, “I don’t need to win the lottery. I won it when I was born here.”

Please don’t assume that those of us with no children don’t care.

          • JustLeaveMeAlone

But, then, I guess by your definition I’m a “single elite” who is all in it for herself, so who cares what I think anyway.

I will leave you this breadcrumb: it’s very presumptuous to assume you know why someone, anyone, is single and/or childless. Very. Presumptuous.

          • penguin2

would I, nor izone, consider everyone who makes such a choice a selfish or elitist person. Absolutely not.

I am responding to your comment, because izone had responded to mine and thus the thread started. I truly do not believe that people who choose not to have children are without care and concern for our country or the future. I do believe and hope izone will forgive me, I think he does too, that some of the people who make that choice are amongst that elitist, sneering condescending group that has fired constant salvos at those of us who desire to embrace family and family values. Embracing these sorts of values often stems from a spiritual construct, although not always. This country has had a traditional culture embracing God, country and family. That family concept does not have to include having children. There are multiple definitions of family. I think what we were both trying to get at was in this specific instance, the elitist media has demonstrated, once again their sneering arrogance towards people who are just regular folk.

And to morstar150, of course childless people are not to blame for this. I am only talking about the elitist “chattering class” who think all of the rest of us are beneath them.

I hope I clarified what the focus really was. I am sorry for any misunderstanding.

          • izoneguy

I apologize if my comment was taking out of context. That was not my intention to spew out a liberal talking point. On the other hand you can have liberal parents with kids that may care about the future. I don’t know all the answers. At least we can bring up viewpoints and discuss them as adults without name calling & profanity.

      • marshmom

What must these people’s childhood’s have been like if they have no clue what a Hippity-Hop is? Or maybe they were trying to make it sound foreign just to reinforce their assertion that the Palins are backwoods rednecks.

Her ship is now much bigger than the Alaska government dingy and its crew of stupid and petty Dem litigators.

We down here in the Motherland are not fooled by Alaska Democrat’s courtroom sideshow attacks on the most popular governor they ever had. When Sarah Palin is out of office in Alaska, it is Alaska that will descend back into political obscurity, not Sarah.

Sarah has no limitations, and soon no binding ties to a state that would rather savage one of its own than win the White House and have an Alaskan as Vice-President, or even President. Shame on them! But their loss is our gain.

And all I can say about those who think they can sink Sarah Palin’s ship by slinging mud is, Beware the Palin Harpoon!

of all of the GOP candidates (VP or Pres) which ones are still in the news, still being discussed in the blogosphere, and still headlining the news. There is only one answer.

Just like 0, she has attained celebrity status nationwide. When she speaks, people (especially women) want to hear what she has to say and discuss it. That is the definition of a political power base.

I say don’t knock it, run with it.

        • Achance

go for it. I prefer somebody who actually knows how to govern and can speak and write in complete sentences. And well structured paragraphs would really be getting somewhere.

          • izoneguy

At least Palin hunts & knows how to fish…plus she is easier to look at.
Obama is the anti-bush, if Palin becomes the anti-Obama that is enough for me.

          • mbecker908

She knows how to hunt and fish. And hopefully, she’ll stick to what she knows.

          • Achance

I’d support her too. He’s spent his whole life becoming what he is; a communist community organizer. He’s glib, facile, and Hahvud educated, even if only by the good graces of affirmative action. She’s not trailer trash or what Toby Keith styled “white trash with money,” but she’s not far from that. I’m willing to bet anyone that she’s never read a book that wasn’t either assigned by a teacher/professor or bought at the drug store – at least not until the last few months when she learned that people expected you to be somewhat “learned.”

Maybe she can do it, maybe she can be the counterpoint to Comrade Obama; we’ll see.

It is truly hilarious to hear Andrea Mitchell try to weave certain words into her story in order to convey a kind of narrative about Palin. She couldn’t say ‘remote’ enough. I counted at least five or six of them. It seems that labeling her home as ‘remote’ somehow makes her less relevant or something. Bizarre. Her other favorite word was ‘quit’. She seemed to try and get that word in as much as possible though Palin had her on the ropes most of the time. Mitchell definitely got the memo from Axelrod and Emmanuel on what to define her with. Fortunately for Sarah, she skated right out from under it.
    Love her.
