MEMBER DIARY

The Hispanic Vote.

Something the Democrats did following their loss in 2000 was to steep itself in far left ideology, they did not consider Bush a legitimate President and went to war with him. The left’s policy in 2004 with the American right was “quid pro quo,” you exposed the lack of character with Clinton out and so we’re going to find a reason to find a lack of character in Bush and criticize the right. While Barack Obama, from his past positions, seems to be the furthest left candidate, the Democratic party as a whole has widened it’s tent. The majority in Congress is not a “progressive majority” depsite Nancy Pelosi’s strong arm, a good number of the Democrats that have been elected ran on conservative principles.

While we need to reposition ourselves back to conservatism, I think the President is right in that we need to find ways to reach out to people we have lost. We need to tone down the immigration rhetoric, not change our policy. When there are morons who talk about Hispanics wanting to “come in here and soak up our social services,” we need to tell them that they need to go and talk to hispanics. Most hispanics came here illegally because of the promise of the American dream and take advantage of social services like education because they want a better life for their children. We need to stop calling pro-Amnesty politicians hispanic names (i.e. Juan McCain), that is very offensive to hispanic people. The way some on the very far right describe hispanics, you’d think they were hell bent on destroying America.

I live in California, which has one of the largest Hispanic populations in the country and most Hispanics I know are great people and proud Americans. They assimilate into American culture by the second or third generation they are here and they love their families. In California (indeed in America), the best aspects of their culture have become our own, not in a pathetic “multicultural” way, but in a way that strengthens American cutlure as a whole. What would America be like without Mexican food? Latin music and salsa dancing? Some of America’s greatest pop-culture icons are hispanic– Desi Arnez, Gloria Estafan, Johnny Mathis, Andy Garcia, etc.

We need to take our message to Hispanic voters (i.e. people that are actually supposed to be American citizens anyway.) We need to bring them our pro-family message, we need to talk about the importance of faith in our party and traditional values. We need to talk about how we like to honor hard work and perseverence and perfer to let individuals make decisions for themselves rather than others. Most importantly however, we need to let legal Hispanics know that illegal immigration puts their future in jeopardy. We need to talk to them about the importance of enforcing the laws on the books. We also need to sit down with hispanic people and talk to them about their thoughts and concerns. The GOP needs to address this problem, or we will find ourselves in a situation similar to the black vote– where the Democratic party gets a 85%+ of one segment of the population. It’s not about comprimising our principles, but taking those very principles, apply them to the issues these people face, talk with them not at them (Democrats talk at minority groups, we need to show them more respect than that.) and be confident in our message. The rest will take care of itself.

COMMENTS

  • Tanggor

    Sir,

Overall, I don?t disagree with the general thrust of your message, i.e. that we need to engage the Hispanic community more. As you rightly point out, many of their underlying value systems would seem to make them natural Republicans (note I said ?many? and not ?all?).

    However, some points of quibble:

    1) ?When there are morons who talk about Hispanics wanting to ?come in here and soak up our social services,? we need to tell them that they need to go and talk to Hispanics. Most Hispanics came here illegally because of the promise of the American dream and take advantage of social services like education because they want a better life for their children.?

    – I?m not convinced these folks are ?morons? as you describe them, although they may be too myopic. Their concern is legitimate, whether or not you like it. I have no doubt that many come here because they ?want a better life?, either for their children or themselves.

I also want a better life for my children and myself. If I break into your house, raid your ?fridge, drink your beer, and demand you pay my tuition and medical bills, I suspect you will call the cops, rather than comply and chalk it up to my ?wanting a better life?.

Simply because what I want is a normal human desire does NOT justify breaking the law and using other people?s resources to get it.

    2) ?They assimilate into American culture by the second or third generation they are here and they love their families.?

    – They may love their families; and yes, many do assimilate. Yet during the protests surrounding the Comprehensive Immigration Reform, it was NOT American flags they were waving (until word spread that they were actually hurting their own cause by being honest in their sympathies). Also, see ?La Raza?. Go ahead. Google it.

There are many of these Johnnies (notice I didn?t say ?Juanies? so as not to offend) who genuinely believe that a large part of US territory is actually theirs (we don? need no stinking assimilation!).

Of course, this does by no means describe all of our ?guests? from south of the border, but it is foolish to overlook the reality that many feel it is their ?right? to be here (which, of course, it isn?t).

    3) ?What would America be like without Mexican food? Latin music and salsa dancing? Some of America?s greatest pop-culture icons are Hispanic? Desi Arnez, Gloria Estafan, Johnny Mathis, Andy Garcia, etc.?

    – Are you serious? Did you really ask that? Out loud? In front of other people? What relevance is this? Do you really feel that, if America were successful in enforcing her borders and immigration laws that such cultural elements would never have arrived here?

Will your next question be about Hamid and Aziz and gee, where would America be without all those pretty burkas?

Stick to the relevant facts, for pity?s sake.

Please don?t take this as overly critical; I?m not trying to flame you. You raise some really good points and it?s true we need to engage this demographic better.

But that engagement MUST be steeped in the notions of law, as understood by America (not the protest-in-the-streets-until-we-get-what-we-want methods so popular to our south).

Don?t fret ? even if we were to successfully seal the border tomorrow, you will still be able to buy a taco, somewhere. And you can find Desi on sale in the DVD store.

alas, not one shout shall issue from any top, roof or otherwise.

The gates (such as they are) shall fall, and the flood will ensue.

    • Josh LeGuern

Tanngor, thank you for your contribution to the conversation. Your points are well taken.

I’m not saying we don’t need to seal the border. That is EXACTLY what we DO need. What we do not need though is to demonize hispanics, which I have seen some (though not all) conservatives do.

I know we tend to hate “nuance” (as do I when the media fawns over Obama for showing “nuance.”) but I think that’s exactly what we need to do in addressing Hispanic people. We need to make sure that we say, “Some hispanics” instead of “you know what hispanics want to do?” or “Hispanics have no interest in America.”

Nothing is worse than being a minority feeling attacked (just be a conservative attending any liberal arts college.) when that happens people tend to huddle together, cling to what binds them together (in this case their Hispanic heritage) and get offended at every suggestion for changes.

First of all your diary conflates two separate issues, immigration and illegal immigration. Learn the difference.

Second, you call for a toning down of rhetoric and then call those who disagree with you “morons”… you tone down your rhetoric first there buddy.

Third, I’ll bet you that Spanish speaking illegal immigrants call John McCain Juan…since that is his name in Spanish and all.

Fourth, I must quote this :

In California (indeed in America), the best aspects of their culture have become our own, not in a pathetic ?multicultural? way, but in a way that strengthens American cutlure as a whole. What would America be like without Mexican food? Latin music and salsa dancing? Some of America?s greatest pop-culture icons are hispanic? Desi Arnez, Gloria Estafan, Johnny Mathis, Andy Garcia, etc.

You just defined down the contributions of the hispanic culture to taco’s, salsa dancing, latin music, and Desi Arnez???? You can’t be this stupid without being a democrat.

I hope you don’t harm yourself when pulling your head out of your ass, but just in case call a Doctor and make an appointment.

    • Josh LeGuern

I’m not going to dignify the less flattering parts of your post (they’re unflattering to you BTW.)

However I will say that I had assumed people were smart enough to seperate statements I made about legal immigrants (who the post was about reaching out to.) vs. illegal immigrants.

And don’t worry, I’m not a Democrat. Although I hope conservatives have the wisdom not to exalt and elevate people like you. If you think my head’s up my ass, fine. But all of our asses are going to be handed to us election after election unless we return to our conservative principles and we make an effort to make new conservatives. Part of that is going to be reaching out to Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, and other minority groups, because we can not win with just whites.

      • Aaron Gardner

You didn’t do a very good job of separating the two issues at all. Sorry but that just is the way I see it.

If your idea of “reaching out” to Hispanics is to make a small list of trivial points about there cultural impact on America, instead of talking to them about how conservative values are the same values that they already employ in their private lives, well I hope you don’t get elevated either.

By the way your last sentence seems to infer that I believe we can make it with just whites, I never said this of course. So why are you trying to label me as a xenophobe? That doesn’t seem very inclusive to me, infact it borders on you trying to call me a racist. I suggest you reconsider that last sentence and set yourself straight, pronto!!

        • AceInTX

Xenophobe is the Rhetoric the left uses to define us…Stop smearing your fellow Republicans with Leftist epithets!

          Wag Finger

          • Aaron Gardner
          • AceInTX

          • Josh LeGuern

Ya’ll are just being silly now. I don’t think pro-border security conservatives are xenophobic, but our behavior can give the media ammo to paint us that way.

          • AceInTX

but you make others that look like you’re accusing us of racism…I particularly like this point:

We need to bring them our pro-family message, we need to talk about the importance of faith in our party and traditional values.

The problem here is that people who continuously harp on reaching out to Latinos because they are with us as cultural conservatives are the very slimeballs who are working overtime to minimize colturally conservative influences in the party!

But when you go into crap like the following…it looks to me like you’re accusing us of xenophobia:

We need to tone down the immigration rhetoric, not change our policy. When there are morons who talk about Hispanics wanting to ?come in here and soak up our social services,?

That’s the biggest problem with illegal immigration…and immigration as a whole…We have people collecting social security and Medicaid who have never paid into the system, taking up hospital beds and filling up emergency and not paying for the services they receive that drives up the cost to us all…legal immigrants included…Are you saying we should ignore the truth of this because the Media will demagogue this issue?

Then you chime in with this gem:

we need to let legal Hispanics know that illegal immigration puts their future in jeopardy. We need to talk to them about the importance of enforcing the laws on the books. We also need to sit down with hispanic people and talk to them about their thoughts and concerns

As if we’re not doing just that already! I know the perception is that we’re not because the so called objective press, John McCain, LaRaza. LULAC etc have perpetuated this lie to benifit themselves…but we are doing exactly what you say here yet you want to act as iff we’re not…as if we don’t think hispanics aren’t worthy of our consideration…you may not say we’re xenophobic per se but you imply it in almost every paragraph!

“I don?t understand why we can?t embrace minorities who are good solid conservatives out of fear that we?ll be tagged with wanting to pursue tokenism.

It?s time we give voice to minorities in our party and stand behind them, the media is extremely hostile to black, hispanic and other minority Republicans.

Minorities are going to relate to someone who is like them, not some old white guy with white hair. We need to embrace blacks, hispanics, and women in our party”….Josh LeGuern Monday, November 24th

Here is my response to his idiotic statement from November 24th…although you can’t really tell after it go ported over from RS3.0

The converse of this is that white people won?t relate to some young black guy with nappy hair, and this would be seen as a racist comment, as it should be. With that in mind I think you should watch what you say in this regard.

He was wrong then and he is wrong now.

          • roscopico

Some of the above posts point fingers at mexico as a primary culptit, I don’t know if anyone knows the extent to which this is true. I only bring this to mention since at least in my experience as many central americans as mexicans end up here in the land of Cheese and Beer.
All semantics (Mexican. Hispanic, whatever) aside, people more reasonable than I have in the past expressed a very real concern about social monetary liabilities for school, medical, welfare, etc. I have seen nationally published articles as well regarding an outflux of border-hoppers. Is this an effect of tightening employer regulation w/r/t citizenship check, or lack of grunt work in fly-by-night home construction (or similar work)?
Our neighbors to the south are for the most part the most sincere honest workers you might hope to have the privilege to employ or work for.
At least here in the land of Cheese and Beer. And only by my experience.
I do believe it is in our best interest as a nation to repeal or amend the bad part of the 14th amendment that makes any baby dropped on American soil an American.
We are the only nation to adopt erstwhile illegals but for the fact they fell at our feet.
We are the melting pot, yes. But our responsibility is first to our citizens.

Go for the Cubans (who hate being called “Hispanics”) and the African Americans the GOP has given up on.

Right now we are adding 140,000 immigrant work visas for foreigners a month. In two years that is about the same number Obama wants to save (3.36 million). He also wants to give those illegal’s already working here (illegally) green cards and citizenship. Not to mention health care and social security benefits. These new jobs will be those “Americans won’t get”.

The one group that will get screwed over the most of all of this are African Americans who compete directly will these illegal’s for jobs. The new trend will be bilingual jobs and the second language won’t be ebonics. It happened after Katrina.

Stop ignoring the African American vote. They agree with Republicans on social issues and on the economy, they would agree that right now there should be no new work visas , no new immigration and no consideration of an amnesty bill until unemployment is below 4%. Anyone getting stimulus money should be required to use e-verify for all their employees.
