MEMBER DIARY

Should We Rebel?

I want you to know, as I did in my post when I asked when it’s time for a third party, that under normal circumstances my response is “get in line” but I have been rethinking this lately. Let’s look at the post-WWII GOP nomination list and their affiliation on the political spectrum.

1952 – Eisenhower – moderate

1956 – Eisenhower – moderate

1960 – Nixon – liberal

1964 – Goldwater – conservative

1968 – Nixon – liberal

1972 – Nixon – liberal

1976 – Ford – moderate

1980 – Reagan – conservative

1984 – Reagan – conservative

1988 – Bush – moderate

1992 – Bush – moderate

1996 – Dole – moderate

2000 – Bush – moderate

2004 – Bush – moderate

2008 – McCain – moderate

2012 – probably Romney – moderate

Out of 15 times, we’ve put forth a conservative candidate three times. We’re supposed to be the conservative party and yet the GOP never seems to want to nominate conservatives. Now, if we vote for Romney the best thing that could happen is that the conservative movement works to challenge him, a sitting president, for the nomination in 4 years time. A worse thing would be President Obama wins another four years because of a dispirited conservative base, but the absolute worst thing that could happen? The conservative movement lines up behind President Romney, just like conservatives did through the ’00′s with President Bush.

I’m ok with voting against President Obama by voting for Romney in the general election, but us conservatives have to make a commitment that we are not going to stand for this in the Republican party any more. We can not make excuses for him. If he says dumb things, we have to acknowledge it, and if he does things that are anti-conservative, we’ve got to fight him tooth and nail to defeat him, just like we did President Obama.

No more Presidents hiding behind the (R) that follows their name.

ably led by Newton Leroy Gingrich.

Start by pledging our life, wealth, and sacred honor to putting a Reagan Conservative in the White House in 2012 and getting all republican candidates as well as sitting congressmen and senators to sign on to tne 21st Century Contract with America.

      …or til he drops out.

But the likely scenario now is that Ronney is the nominee… So what do we do?

Do we get in line and fully support Romney? The Establishment will keep putting up moderates if we keep getting in line.

Do we sit on our hands and let Obama get re-elected to teach the establishment a lesson?

Or do we get behind an effort to unseat President Obama and upon victory immediately become the loyal opposition to President Ronmey and do whatever we can to make sure he’s defeated in the 2016 primary?

I vote for number 3, but we’ve got to be committed to doing it.

4 more years of Obama will destroy this country as we know it! It is that bad imho!

        • J. Leg

….but should he win, I will oppose Romney whenever he strays from the reservation (and my assumption is, based on his tendency to govern by the polls, that will be often.)

  • elayman

I think that Mitt is defective in may ways which are still not readily apparent to most voters … but not being a flaming agent of change is not among them. Just keep sufficient pressure on from the conservative flank and he will come around sooner rather than later.

If they are going to just crap on us now, won’t they after they don’t need us anymore? We will get what they give us and nothing more.

      • J. Leg

If we have to vote for Romney, we have to vote for Romney. But I just want the establishment to understand that this is not acceptable.

Romney will have a difficult presidency if he governs the way he’s campaigned.

    • J. Leg

… Romney will do or say whatever it takes to get elected. We’ve seen this time and time again in the most blatant ways possible.

That’s all fine and dandy when the nation is in a conservative mood, but what of he had to do something unpopular? Entitlement reform is a good example, it’s incredibly unpopular when the Dems start lying about it, but it’s something that is going to be absolutely neccessary for the next President to do.

The minute Romney sees the polls shifting, he’ll fold and change his position.

I saw this happen with Schwarzenegger here in California. Arnold was a solid fiscal conservative in his first term, he aimed to destroy the Dems foothold on CA politics, get our fiscal house and get taxation under control. The Dems went on a warpath against the Governator and he folded like a tin can an became the most left wing and unpopular GOP Govs of all time.

Romney is cut from the same cloth.

I’m not even convinced to vote for him, but what real choices do we have left ?
Would a Romney administration necessarily being more risk averse and poll driven than Gingrich in laying out how he would address the country’s major fiscal problem ?

Conservatives have to vote seriously to be taken as such. Huntsman alone embraced without reservation the budget and entitlement-reform plan of Paul Ryan and look where that landed.

There are still 45 states to go. Newt has over 200,000 contributors at less than $200 so there is plenty of room for us to contribute. We give Newt the tools and he will take the fight to Romney. He had done it before and I trust him to do it again. Remember….Romney is 5-17 going into this cycle!

    • The_Rebel

then if he wins the general election and sees from the exit polls that many conservatives stayed home, he won’t feel that he owes them anything. That’s politics. Although it’s not likely he will win if this happens.

On the other hand, if his victory is due mainly to conservatives getting out the vote for him, then I think you will see that reciprocated in his policies and decisions from day one. In that case he would start with some executive orders with which the conservative base would be quite pleased.

  • natek58

you will see him turn to the LEFT. He will be trying to appeal to independents to win the election and take us Conservatives for granted. He will assume that we have no where to go.

That is why we must fight now to prevent him from getting nominated.

I am getting a really sick feeling about this. Romney is going to be a disaster.

    • westcoastpatriette

We will be even more ignored than we are right now if Romney becomes the nominee.
