The 2008 Campaign’s Frankenstein

It's alive! It's alive! And it isn't going away.

Joining a growing choir of conservative luminaries, thought-leaders and activists in criticizing newly-elected RNC Chairman Michael Steele, Samuel “Joe The Plumber” Wurzelbacher leveled some harsh, Johnny-come-lately criticisms earlier this week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

At a gathering of 800 conservative activists at Americans for Prosperity’s “Defending the American Dream Summit,” Wurzelbacher warned of the “long road ahead” as Republicans wander the desert for the next four years without leadership, awaiting the 2010 and 2012 elections.

“Unfortunately we have a chairman up there who wants to redefine conservatism; he wants to make it hip hop, put it in a new package and sell it,” Wurzelbacher griped as he referenced a three week old Steele interview with the Washington Post’s Ralph Z. Hallow. After his historic election, the newly-minted Chairman told Hallow he intended to revitalize the Party’s stale image – one all too often associated with aging, technophobic white men – via an unprecedented presence in print, television, radio, and online outlets.

Wurzelbacher’s reductive critique of Chairman Steele’s agenda serves no one’s purpose beyond his own, as he recently hung up the plunger and boots to publish a book. And to boost sales of this not-so-originally titled book, Fighting for the American Dream, it isn’t surprising that Wurzelbacher would resort to drumming up controversy where none exists, or revive a one which has long since faded into the annals of bad talking points.

After a brief run-in with then Senator Barack Obama, Wurzelbacher was catapulted to the national stage by the McCain campaign as a shining example of the quintessential blue collar, small business owner who was threatened by Obama’s tax system. But his lasting influence – the fact we’re now 4 months out from November 4th but still forced to read the cringe-inducing title “Joe the Plumber” – is explained as such: His current media presence is an unfortunate byproduct of the 2008 campaign, a byproduct I regrettably helped create as an agent of that campaign. We unknowingly created a monster, and I suspect he won’t leave town until he’s chased by angry villagers with pitchforks.

Liz Mair, the former RNC Director of Online Communications, isn’t too pleased, and nails the issue on the head. “The GOP is really becoming a circular firing squad, and an increasingly embarrassing one at that,” she said on Twitter. At a time when the Republican Party should be unified in our opposition to the President, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Read, we find ourselves in a period of ‘all against all,’ each non-descript conservative claiming the mantle of “Leader” and vying for their own book deals.

But Wurzelbacher already got his book deal; aside from his dignity, he’s got nothing to lose. Oh wait, I suppose he’s already lost that now, too.

The Chairman of the Republican Party is certainly not beyond reproach, but next time Joe, or his publicist, plans a canned, hackneyed attack to regain some media attention in an attempt to sell books, they should take serious pause.

Time to look forward...

Not backward.

And if we are going to look backward, let’s look at Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

“Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. … including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy”

Ok, 11th Commandment...well Joe is a Republican...

So why is it now ok to act like he is a pariah for mentioning Steele’s rather rough start at the RNC.

See this is why you moderates piss me off so much….you invoke the 11th on Joe when he speaks out about Steele, while at the same time not realizing that Joe’s voice is just as important as Steele’s and Joe is a Republican too.

Both of you guys need to work on your own plank before going after Joe speck.

Man this pisses me off!!!!

And for the record, the 11th commandment is a cop-out

Never once have I claimed sanctuary under it.

It’s for thin-skinned people who are all too happy to attack others, but can’t endure the same treatment.

I read the linked material...

I couldn’t see where Joe challenged Steele on any specific issue or conservative value.

I saw a cheap shot.

If he wants to argue specifics and real issues, more power to him.

But this diary is just good clean reporting right….please.

You bring out that tired 11th commandment crap anytime some moderate gets called out…..but you are more than willing to break it when you can get a dig in on Joe or any other conservative.

Either live by it or don’t….just quit being selective about who you apply it to…otherwise you are just another moderate hypocrite.

I don’t see what your beef is with Wurzelbacher…Steele is the one who is coming off flat after winning the Chairmans race.

As far as the “circular firing squad” I think this meme is overblown. We are in a period of reflection for the party because we have gone to long without having a clear definition of who we are.

If Joe wan’ts his voice heard good for him, I wish Steele stop going to shows like DL Hughley’s. Maybe stand up in indignation when his party is compared to Nazi’s…but yeah you are probably right, Joe the plumber is the problem, not the party’s lack of leadership and definition.

This attack canned

James Richardson Tuesday, March 10th at 12:51PM EDT (link)

If Steele’s comments truly agitated Wurzelbacher, and signaled the party was traveling in the wrong direction, he would have said something sooner. This is nothing more than the concoction of his publicist to get him back in the limelight after fleeting public interest (in him and his book).

Like I said, Steele is certainly not above reproach, but this wasn’t constructive criticism. He did this to boost his own profile, not to help the party.

That is a supremely thin assumption to base a counterattack on...

Attack Mode Tuesday, March 10th at 12:59PM EDT (link)

You assume that Joe is using the platform of the Americans for Prosperity to engage in a PR shtick at the expense of Chairman Steele, that is kinda a large claim to make considering you have shown no evidence that that is the case.

If this truly offended him

James Richardson Tuesday, March 10th at 1:03PM EDT (link)

Why wait more than THREE WEEKS? Pajamas Media has regrettably provided him with an outlet, print and tv, so it’s not as if he was without the opportunity.

This wasn’t an issue of political moderation, it was an issue of Joe putting himself before the party, or, for that matter, conservative principles. He just wants to sell books. Plain and simple.

Are you surprised?

aardpig Tuesday, March 10th at 1:09PM EDT (link)

Here’s a guy that wants to ease the tax burden on the ‘rich’, not through any specific conservative-leaning ideology (e.g., the rich are the engines of the economy), but simply because he wants more loot when he joins their ranks. He’s been in it for the money from the get-go.

Because it’s wrong to be profit-motivated in supporting free market capitalism? You know… one day… *I’d* like to be rich, too. And I wouldn’t want to be overtaxed, either. Am I an evil capitalist, now, too?

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it.

Again that is an assumption about his intent...very thin...

and absolutely impossible for you to prove.

To me Joe is pretty much right, Steel is flat and hasn’t done anything to inspire confidence….and saying “baby” at the end of his remarks isn’t helping.

I guess the only question to me is, regardless of any assumed intent, is whether or not what Joe said is factual. Other than that, the man is an activist, just like many of us. If I get a book deal does that mean I am no longer allowed to criticize the party Chairman because it may be of benefit to me financially?

Seriously, I think you did nothing with this diary other then engage in the very same circular firing squad that it was meant to discourage. Only your hunting license tag seems to say conservative instead of rino. Six in one hand half a dozen in the other.

Joe the Plumber....

Josh LeGuern Tuesday, March 10th at 1:28PM EDT (link)

Started as an “only in America” story and has evolved into a monsterous embarrasment. He needs to grab his plunger, do his job, be a good conservative, and make America work.

Michael Steele is trying to find conservatives where we have never looked for them before, that’s what he means by “hip hop” you have to find ways that people can relate to conservatism. We haven done this for urban communities and it’s high time we do.

I think James is right on the money: we need to be united. Rush has forgiven Steele, I know many conservatives are suspicious of him for teaming with Christine Todd Whitman (as the conservative representative on the RLC) and that was a mistake on his part, but I dont think Steele has had a rough start, other than the two hiccups on DL Hughley (Which has been subsequently cancelled.) Steele has done a pretty good job.

Steele hasn't done much of anything...

He has had a few gaffes and fired all the staff at the RNC…other than that he has issued an RFP that looks like it was written by the HS class president.

If we are continually impressed with the mediocrity of our leaders we will continue to be in the minority.

….and that’s more than Mike Duncan could say.

And other than his gaffe with Limbaugh and the “Nazi” comment, I think he’s been right on.

What exactly other than those two things has Mike Steele said that has offended you in anyway?

Solution for circular firing squad

tankertodd Tuesday, March 10th at 1:46PM EDT (link)

Here’s my solution to Ms. Liz’s criticism of the circular firing squad.
Instead of holding our tongues and not inculcating our party with the core principles, let’s make the firing squad a nice, straight, efficient line.

And stand up some Republicans in front of it, figuratively. Those who don’t believe and support the ultra-simple principles need to go away. Enough milquetoast DC insider crap. If you’re gonna be a dog, be a BIG DOG!

We support life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. We cherish life. We believe in the fairness of opportunity, not outcomes. That’s what Joe the Plumber was speaking to.

And as much as I believe Joe’s 15 minutes are up, I am much more supportive of his right to speak than a majority of the GOP dead weight.

I *Want* That Firing Squad!

IJB Tuesday, March 10th at 2:04PM EDT (link)

I agree with Tankertodd:

The first thing you do when you lose a war, when a company goes down, when a family implodes - you find the people responsible, and tie a can to their butts. No fuss, no muss - they’re *gone*.

Frankly, as a new minority party, we don’t need “Big Tent” nonsense right now - we need message discipline.

And message discipline means a whole bunch people who either got us into this mess, or who continue to make excuses, need to *go*.

Now, I’m not saying we need to unload everyone (when people start going after people like Roy Blunt, you’ve probably gone too far). But a lot of people need to be drummed out of this party.

Yes, the Dems and media will have a field day with it. Yes, some people around here will whinge and complain, and storm off to the sidelines.

And that’s just tough.

It’s a necessary process.

Some so-called Republicans and conservatives, either those who don’t believe, or those who too easily get ‘off message’ need to go. Or be pushed.

Either way, it needs to happen.

But in this particular case, Steele has already been such a disaster, put me down as probably lining up with Joe The Plumber. And this party better be careful if we’re going to demonize people like him - that’s exactly the *wrong* direction to go in.

Mr. Richardson read your history...

Jack Tuesday, March 10th at 2:10PM EDT (link)

In the aftermath of 1965 and 1974 the GOP had to do housecleaning. The unfortunate aspects of any political party doing this is it never happens in the dead of night under cover of darkness.

Don’t panic Mr. Richardson this happens from time to time. Sometimes it is good sometimes it is bad, but it is inevitable. Take a deep breath the elections are a long time off and we have time to shake out the wannabes and the fools.

One thing Mr. Richardson you might not like Joe, and from the sounds of it you do not. Please don’t take your jealousies (which is what your criticisms sound like) and pass them off as sound astute judgment.

So what if it’s three weeks after the fact, it doesn’t make his opinion any less valid. Is he somehow obligated to move his speaking engagement up 3 weeks to discuss something he thinks is important? Can he only reflect on events of the past 24 hour news cycle? Would this be somehow less offensive if Joe weren’t selling a book? I don’t recall anyone complaining when Rush slapped Steele (or Newt for that matter), and he’s selling advertisements. The fact of the matter is that Joe is right, and the MSM has decided that he’s going to get coverage. If they cover Joe and Joe says something that’s typically thoughtful and insightful should we care if his comment could be more timely. Joe is a true Conservative and he’s out there doing good work for the cause, first by punching huge holes in the MSM’s absurdly biased coverage of the recent Gaza conflict and now by helping us keep our own house in order. I choose to stand with Joe the Plumber (again!) and against the divisive forces in our own party and in the MSM who are hoping to take him down.

Even Rush, Anne Coulter, Frum, Brooks and all of us do it. So why not Joe?

On the authenticity or level of intelligence presented in his book:

1. If you did buy the book, then , I guess, you can complain all day with its contents. But it’s still your own fault, not Joe’s. Joe never lied that he got an Ivy League degree from Harvard or something.

2. If you didn’t buy the book, and YOU JUST SAW ITS COVER, then, please….. let those who bought/will buy his book do whatever pleases them.

3. It think that the book is not physically toxic. So it’s generally safe. So, please, stop destroying the business on a Small American.

As for the issue of RNC Chairman Steele, sorry bro. If Steele has the freedom to mock Rush, so is Joe the Plumber to mock Steele.

My Joe the Plumber Advice:

Joe needs his additional income. Please mock his book later when the publisher already secures enough profit. …. You know, it’s recession and all.

To me he is a symbol of “average Americans” who surprisingly often have more common sense and understanding than many of the “luminaries, thought-leaders” etc.

Joe was the one who got Obama to make the “spread the wealth around” comment.

Even more, he is an example of an “average American” who speaks up, speaks out. I believe we need that now more than ever. I find it sad that his example also shows the lengths to which certain forces will go to destroy and silence even a private citizen. Worse, how much criticism he receives from all sides.

Just me, but I’m glad Joe has the opportunity to speak his mind, I think he might speak for a lot of other people. Besides, I personally get sick of listening to all the “experts” and “intellectuals” who seem to be wrong at least as often as they are right. Joe’s not pretending to be an expert or a spokesman for anyone or anything. He thinks for himself and speaks for himself. I say, more power to him. More “power” to the American people.
