Long Knives for Steele Already?

Katon Dawson, one time contender for the top Republican post, is quietly coordinating a vote of no confidence in newly-elected RNC Chairman Michael Steele after the NY 20 special election on March 31 – “regardless of whether Republicans win the seat or not,” reports Taegan Goddard.

After an extremely divisive race for RNC Chairman, Steele, the former Chairman of GOPAC, bested Dawson on the sixth ballot, and political insiders are quick to note the lingering bad blood between the two rivals.

If Goddard’s sources are correct, Dawson won’t be the only top-ranking party official to voice their concern over Steele’s debut month as Chairman. In a memo circulated last week to national committee members, Dr. Ada Fisher, one of three African American members of the RNC and a former Dawson supporter, called for Steele’s resignation, saying he was “eroding confidence” in the national party apparatus to fundraise and remain competitive in a Republican-hostile climate.

The metrics by which Fisher, and ostensibly Dawson, judge Steele – his proposed ‘hip hop’ makeover, and the public flap with Rush Limbaugh – are embarrassingly shallow, particularly so when used as ammunition to call for a chairman’s resignation. As Politico’s Mike Allen explains, ousting a party chairman is no small order, in fact, the likelihood of other members joining Fisher and now Dawson is exceptionally low.

If the call for Steele’s resignation has legs, party members will likely look for leadership on the matter from House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and Utah Governor John Huntsman – the three of which are all potential candidates for the 2012 Republican nomination.

Were there any measurable means by which the committee could judge Steele’s performance, for example, first quarter fundraising, this vote of no confidence would seem less childish, but only slightly so. The first quarter fundraising report, however, won’t be released by the FEC until March 20. “Jumping the gun,” comes to mind.

The two potential scenarios, as I see them:

With disregard for the potential of self-destruction, Dawson forges ahead and continues quietly gathering support for the vote of no confidence in Steele. If Dawson’s motives are pure – remedying a collective lapse in judgment by electing an unprepared chairman – it’s an extremely hard sell given the impassioned race for Chairman, one which left only these two rivals standing on the last ballot. But the media, always loving the racially-tinged stories, will furiously latch on: “All-whites country club member moves to oust first African American GOP Chairman.” The resulting PR campaign would be focused on fending off accusations that the GOP is the last bastion of the Confederacy. It is, of course, not true, but reporters and editors know controversy drives readership, and readership means relevance.

Conveniently positioned as the fall guy by Steele detractors – potentially ex-RNC Chairman Mike Duncan staffers (of which I am one) and campaign supporters – Dawson faces the media’s indignant firing squad. As Dawson, who garnered 71 votes on the final ballot, goes down in flames, followed by his reputation as a proficient and cunning political chief, former Steele competitors begin working the backchannel for support in a post-Steele environment.

Of course, this is all highly speculative at the present moment. The RNC is operating on a skeleton crew, and as Jim Geraghty notes, “The changing of the guard at the RNC means that there are a lot of staffers who were, at one point, well-connected within a national party committee and who are now out in the cold.” Suffice it to say, no one has any real inclination as to what is happening behind the scenes at the RNC or what, if anything, is motivating Dawson to call for the vote.

UPDATE: By way of the National Review’s Campaign Spot, Dawson writes:

“I support Michael Steele. Our Committee elected him knowing that he can lead us during this critical time for our Party. The people behind this anonymous rumor are clearly intent on dividing the Republican National Committee and our Party at a time when we need to be united.”

Scenario two, whereby Steele’s detractors pacify both Steele and Dawson simultaneously, became a very real possibility.

So who still has faith in Steele?

wshanshaw Wednesday, March 11th at 12:32PM EDT (link)

And why? Will the decision to keep Steele be made based on race? Maybe Holder was right, after all.

I don’t know that anyone in Steele’s position could actually rebuild the RNC, or if any of the candidates would be able to do it. But I’m thinking they would at least support the party.

Hmmm, given the update...

The_Gadfly Wednesday, March 11th at 12:34PM EDT (link)

I wonder if this was a Rahm plot to take the heat of the Rush imbroglio?

Before that I would have said I’m not surprised the rumors are starting. The election was heatedly contested, Steele has slipped up, and he is playing things very close to the vest at the moment for precisely the reason that (according to the an interview with him in the Washington Times) he doesn’t want developing ideas shredded by rumors before they even get out of the gestation period. That undercuts a lot of people who probably previously figured they’d be able to manipulate the levers of power even if they weren’t in charge.

I’m still gonna be watching Steele like the firebrand paleoconservative I am, but he won the election and that means we owe him the chance to succeed.

We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

…eroding confidence in the national party apparatus…

I wasn’t aware that something which is non-existent could erode.

That's more than a little off base

James Richardson Wednesday, March 11th at 1:11PM EDT (link)

The national party apparatus — the RNC — was the only thing that kept McCain competitive with Obama in the general election.

It was, under Duncan, a fund raising powerhouse. With Steele’s unrivaled celebrity, onlookers will likely want a similar result from the newly-minted Chairman when the FEC reports are released on the 20th.

His detractors should hold their criticisms until then, if not later.

I honestly have no reply for this...nt.

National Party Apparatus

ggross56 Wednesday, March 11th at 6:13PM EDT (link)

I couldn’t care less about the “national party apparatus.” They’re the idiots that tried running a top-down, crontrol-freak organizaation that ran us into the ground. I said in this post thatI’ll fight for Chairman Steele staying on because we shoulidn’t judge a man based on one statement:

http://www.letfreedomringblog.com/?p=4013

The spoiled brat losers in the RNC need to be run out of town ASAP.

The "National Party Apparatus" is a joke!

AHALgal Wednesday, March 11th at 6:53PM EDT (link)

Are you kidding me?

The RNC was held together by bailing wire and chewed-up stick of Doublemint! The McCain campaign squad wasn’t much better.

And then to top it all off, Cyrus Krohn (the lead tech guy at RNC under Duncan, the man with access to every stick of RNC data) gives his blog swan song and pronounces his long friendship with sworn enemy-of-every-Republican Arianna Huffington.

What the heck are you, a mole?

A mole? You clearly have your head buried in the sand.

James Richardson Wednesday, March 11th at 7:14PM EDT (link)

Speaking as someone who worked for the RNC, and knew exactly the manner in which the McCain campaign operated, we held the line in this campaign. You are sorely misinformed.

Pull up the FEC reports — you’ll be surprised. And when you do, compare them to the Dean-led DNC.

Knowing Cyrus both personally and professional (as he was formerly my boss), I don’t see the relevance of his well-documented association with Arianna. Cyrus is an established technologist who was formerly the original publisher for Slate, and then a heavy-weight at Yahoo. Newsflash: People mingle. Do you expect all successful people to limit their interactions to those of the same political beliefs?

I worked on the McCain campaign

AHALgal Wednesday, March 11th at 8:54PM EDT (link)

and it was a mess. Unable to take criticism, unable to stick to a cohesive strategy, unable to establish (and stick to) a leadership model, and utterly unable to work with local party organizations.

Cyrus’ relationship with Arianna is a problem. He had access to millions of voter records and donor records. In national party politics at this level there is no room for “mingling” with the enemy. Your attempt to think otherwise is naive, and I know the other side would laugh at your naivety.

Your type thinks this is some ordinary career or a little competitive game. You’ve lost sight of the fact that what we do is a matter of life, liberty and death. We assist the election of the leader of the free world. The last great hope of freedom on earth. I choose to take my roll in the process very seriously and I hope other Republicans start doing the same.

Are you actually making the case

James Richardson Wednesday, March 11th at 9:23PM EDT (link)

That Cyrus would have somehow compromised the RNC data file by sharing information with, of all people, Arianna Huffington? That’s a tough sell. But the fact that you’re making it — or, at least, attempting to make it — suggests you don’t know Cy.

And I suspect Erick (who is rarely found not singing Cyrus’ praises) will back me up here: Your fears are misguided.

Cyrus was the darling

AHALgal Thursday, March 12th at 9:04AM EDT (link)

of anyone attached to Republican politics because they all thought he was their only hope to have a successful technology strategy.

I doubt the sincerity of anyone who blogs about their resignation while thanking people who call themselves sworn political enemies to the organization Cyrus drew a check from. He not only thanked them, he gushed. And he gushed in an exit blog, which just might go in the Hall of Fame of Unprofessionalism!

You may think I’m misguided, but because of Cyrus’ final act of disrespect and the suspicion over him, many more serious donors have shut their checkbooks. Erosion over Cyrus baring his soul is the last thing the RNC needs right now, but the reality of situation.

If any donors closed their checkbooks to the RNC

James Richardson Thursday, March 12th at 9:12AM EDT (link)

After Cyrus’ depature, it would be for the sole fact that he’s gone, not the manner in which he left.

Again I say, you are seriously misguided.

Seriously

AHALgal Thursday, March 12th at 9:32AM EDT (link)

you’re the one that is misguided.

I know FOUR RNC donors who are mad as hell over Cyrus Krohn’s little swan-song letter and have canceled their on-going contribution.

56% of people don’t trust the federal government (up 12% in the last 6 mos). What makes you think they still trust their political party? Cyrus’ blog post gave them one more reason to doubt.

Seriously, you don’t want to upend a National Committe Chairman just because he has a bad outing on the Hughley show. I understand that he frakked up, and so does Steele, but the metrics we need to look at are as follows:

1. First Quarter Fundraising.
2. Candidate Recruitment for Governor’s Races and State House races (reapportionment, people, reapportionment!!!).
3. NY 20

If Steele is building staff and is pursuing a Republican version of 50 State, then good for him. If he’s going on the offensive, than good for him. We’re looking at at least three cycles before getting back in the game in the House, anyway.

Replacing Steele with anyone other than Blackwell would be no different from slitting our wrists.

Martin Knight Wednesday, March 11th at 2:28PM EDT (link)

Steele so far has been a disappointment. But I think he deserves at least until after the races in VA and NJ this year before he’s given a grade.

To be perfectly honest though, I’d rather not be seeing him on television being a talking head - it would appear he has the unfortunate tendency of trying to cater to his audience, which is dangerous when on liberal shows hosted by liberals before an audience of liberals.

Therefore I’d rather be reading more about the new hires he’s making, new projects he’s starting up, events he’s organizing, stuff he’s reforming at the RNC.

Let’s be honest here, we’re stuck with the guy. Once the RNC elected him, they tied their own hands and I’m pretty certain they know it as well as we do. In other words, if Steele is not allowed to complete his tenure, we would be giving a racial thermonuclear warhead to the opposition.

Unless Steele is replaced by another black man.

So even if Dawson was indeed entertaining thoughts of getting Steele booted out, he had to know there was no way he was getting the seat himself - especially given the baggage the Left has put on his past.

Which leaves Blackwell … I’d be happy about that. But I’d be seriously unhappy if it ever came to that; because it would mean Steele had failed.

And trust me when I say; going into 2010, we don’t want that.

Not happy about his debut ...

thirteen28 Wednesday, March 11th at 3:18PM EDT (link)

… especially the dust-up with Rush and his baffling non-response to DL Hugley, but this is a bit premature.

What Steele SHOULD do though is to stay off of TV for a while and maybe spend some time with Haley Barbour who could show him a thing or two about how it’s done.

Here's what I see!

AceInTX Wednesday, March 11th at 3:44PM EDT (link)

As most know here, I was an early critic of Steele and had immense doubts about him. I backed Blackwell over him. I am definitely dismayed about his dustup with Rush and his limp wristed response when his party was compared to NAZIs. That having been said and dispensed with, I would definitely oppose any attempt to remove him at this time. He hasn’t had a chance to shape the RNC and accomplish any of his agenda and to short circuit him it this point is complete and utter idiocy IMHO. What I see here as a crybaby attempt by the establishment and the scumbags Steele sent packing with good reason and a spiteful attempt to prevent him from succeeding at any cost.

As to the personalities mention, I think what I say above is justified.

Gov. Huntsman is a moderate Republican who was an early backer for John McCain in the 2008 primaries and is rumored to be in the hunt for 2012. He’s known for his green policies, support for health care reform, pro Gay Marriage, and other “Compassionate Conservative” positions, He has commended Obama’s pick of Kathleen Sebelious and was endorsed for Governor by numerous news outlets in Utah for his willingness to reach across the isle to enact legislation.

Romney is a moderate Republican from the NE who is the likely establishment pick for POTUS in 2012. He’s also in the pro government health care camp, pro gay marriage, questionable on life issues etc. Given his behavior and tactics in the primaries last year, this kind of thing is right up his alley. It’s Romney’s style and typical of those who ran his campaign to kneecap and undermine any and all opposition to him and damn the consequences!

Of course Dawson has an interest in this since he is the apparent pick of these two. I don’t know enough about him to voice opposition or support of/to him…maybe someone here can give me some insight…but the fact that he would play ball with the other two…and the establishment crowd who are directing this doesn’t speak well of him.

I’m not a party insider and I can only guess at this since I’m an outsider looking in…but it looks to me like there are some sour grapes involved where Steele is concerned. My guess is that this is being supported, (to the extent that it has any support), by those that are pissed and upset by the fact that Duncan was their first choice but they were soundly spanked by their rank and file into rejecting him for Chairman.

Whether Duncan has anything to do with this is irrelevant to my mind. The main thing we need to focus on here is the antics of those who once held the reigns and drove the wagon into the ditch who want to blame everything and everybody but themselves for the damage they have wrought and will slit anyone’s throat to get back in control!

As I have said before, I supported Steele for the position, but his statements and appearances have ranged from inadequate to embarrassing.

He simply isn’t up to snuff.

You're kidding, right?

randy streu Thursday, March 12th at 8:24AM EDT (link)

The grassroots voted for McCain because he wasn’t Obama. Not because of Duncan, not because of the RNC, and not because of McCain. The votes went the way they did because the DNC — not the RNC — successfully got their talking points out. They effectively made it a race of Obama versus W. Other than the pure personality votes (those who voted for Obama as Messiah versus those who genuinely like McCain as President), the race was made up of those who didn’t like Bush and those who didn’t like Obama.

If you want to pretend there’s confidence in the National Party, fine. Your head, your sand — do what you want with them. But I look at the RNC under Duncan (and, honestly, in the last several years) and I see a party which has allowed itself and its members be designated as greedy, racist thugs — and rather than stand up for its correct principles, it has denied those principles, throwing those who held them under the bus, in order to win elections.

Duncan was ousted because of his failure to correct the narrative. Steele was voted in, partly, because of his percieved understanding of how to do so. But so far, rather than correct the narrative — rather than finding ways to present the message that Republican values, AS THEY ARE, -are- compassionate, -are- inclusive, -are- the BEST way to insure freedom for every American — he chose to fall back on attacking the message, and its messengers. This does not bode well.

Grrr... kids should not be allowed near my keyboard.
