Steele’s Job in Jeopardy, Again?

Republican Jim Tedisco conceded the special election to fill Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s vacated House seat to Scott Murphy yesterday, thereby giving Democrats their second Congressional victory post-November, but most importantly, a reason to cast Republicans – namely, Republican National Chairman Michael Steele – in a less than competent light.

After rebounding from a series of gaffes and provocative interviews, Steele saw NY-20 as a means to change the narrative. He elected to up the ante and raise the profile of the race by investing large sums of money in the race, transferring $280,000 to the New York Republican State Committee, which is to say nothing of the $1,000,000 transferred to the financially-strained Hill committees.

The RNC transfers aside, Steele invested his own personal capital and celebrity in the hopes of assuaging committee members’ fears they elected the wrong guy for the job. Steele bet it all – his reputation and unclear future as party chief – on Tedisco, and now all he has are the shoes on his feet and the shirt on his back.

“We’ve come to play, and we’ve come to win,” Steele said on one of two visits to the district. Of course, it’s likely that Steele honestly thought this would be a Republican victory. And on paper, it should have been. Tedisco was a well-known state legislator and long time resident of the district who was opposite a young, relatively unknown ‘carpetbagger’ running in a district that as recent as 2006, Republicans enjoyed a 15 point lead in voter registration rolls.

Had Tedisco won, NY-20 was a genuine opportunity for Republicans to claim they had exorcised their demons from 2006 and 2008, but now it’s an opportunity for Democrats to manufacture a Republican Party schism by highlighting Steele’s vulnerabilities. Steele’s tenure has been marred by calls for resignation, questionable challenges from old opponents, and a potential vote of no confidence, the last two of which were contingent upon Tedisco losing. Democrats now hope that by embarrassing Steele and drawing attention to Tedisco’s loss they can provoke greater Republican in-fighting. The Democrats obviously don’t want Steele to resign, he is, after all, the gift that keeps giving (elections), but creating the perception that Republicans do is priceless.

When the dust settles, it is expected that Steele will remain in his post, if only for the institutional challenges that make ousting a sitting chairman near-impossible. Nonetheless, he’s treading on increasingly thin ice with committee members. In the hopes of regaining their confidence, he will likely shift his focus to the governor’s races in Virginia and New Jersey, two of three races the beleaguered chairman described as ‘winnable’ by the GOP. The third was NY-20.

As Much As I Don't Like Steele as RNC Chief...

IJB Saturday, April 25th at 10:41AM EDT (link)

…Even I don’t blame him for the loss of NY-20.

The problems there weren’t Steele and the RNC. The problem was that Jim Tedisco was a crummy candidate who ran a horrid campaign. (Of course, the fact that NY state voters are yellow dog democrats doesn’t help.)

Basically, I blame the NY GOP, and the closed selection process that allowed such a flawed candidate to be chosen.

Of course, now that Tedisco has lost, I *will* blame Steele if he allows Tedisco to be the candidate again in 2010.

But, for now, the blame on this one lies elsewhere.

I agree, IJB.

Murphy is a highly-spirited young gun of the Dem’s Party and Tedisco is….

Never mind.

Steele is doing great in fundraising and I don't blame him

I don't give much credit to Steele wrt to GOP's good fundraising turnout.

Rod_Patrick Saturday, April 25th at 6:26PM EDT (link)

There are other underlying factors that propel the encouraging donations to GOP.

I suspect that the turnout would be much much better if the RNC Chairman is not Steele.

You may well be right, but one thing we know: we have a great level of fundraising

Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, April 25th at 6:29PM EDT (link)

And that means that at least, he hasn’t been so bad that he prevented great fundraising.

I have very low expectations of pols, hence my joy when hostages are rescued and money is raised!, despite the existence of pols.

Ok, GC. I give Steele some credits too just to have peace with you, bro. LOL!

Rod_Patrick Saturday, April 25th at 7:25PM EDT (link)

Small donations from ordinary individuals are pouring in. This is truly an excellent sign in just a matter of 3 months.

On the “pols”?

if pols = polls; Rasmussens’ 50-50 in Congressional Ballot is not bad at all. It means that we are starting to gain the trust of the independents. Yes it may not be enough to ensure GOP win by 2010, it may be slow, it sure will.

if pols = politicians: To get the youth vote, we have to look for smart and young candidates. WE need to choose younger candidates in the primaries. We lost NY-20 because it’s a battle between 39-yr old Murphy vs. a 68 yr old Tedisco.

It's less an issue of blaming Steele for the loss in NY-20

James Richardson Saturday, April 25th at 11:04AM EDT (link)

As it is an issue of blaming for him raising the profile, staking his future on it, and then losing it.

Agreed

This was just an odd house race but it was billed as both a referendum on Obama and on Steele.

In the end it was essentially a tie, so there was no referendum either way.

I like Steele

I think he is and will be hoard nosed and will push the party forward. We need to pre-empt the on coming attack and back this guy. Even if we want some one else we need to at least seem to be unified. We can air our dissatisfaction to each other but we need to be unified in our objective.

Steele is killing us

AHALgal Saturday, April 25th at 2:21PM EDT (link)

I like Blackwell, but once he won I was all-in for Steele. Now, I’m all out and back to supporting individual candidates and issue groups. In the mere 90 days since he’s been at the helm:

1. Insulted Rush Limbaugh by calling him names generated by David Axelrod and Rahmbo Emanuel.

2. Told GQ Magazine that he is not pro-life, but pro-choice.

3. Tried to cover that up and admitting that he is pro-gay marriage (another divisive issue).

4. Promised to make the GOP the “hip-hop party” (I thought this was politics, not a music label).

5. Refused to call Barack Hussein 0bama a socialist.

He has accomplished nothing more than to twist the GOP in the wind and continue on with the traitorous, ineffective behavior. May he resign or be removed soon.

If he does resign

greiner Saturday, April 25th at 2:35PM EDT (link)

let it be a clean break with a smooth transfer of duties. I would be for that but that is not going to happen. So we should at least look like we are together. It will get us further than if we look like we are fighting

I tend to agree for several reasons, but especially one

Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, April 25th at 6:31PM EDT (link)

It is VERY hard to be a black conservative, much less one that gets elected statewide in a blue state. Add that to his many sterling moments over the years, and I have confidence in him. And I am one that switched to Blackwell near the end and wrote a column chastising him a month or so ago.

Evidence for acceptance of black conservatives

AHALgal Thursday, April 30th at 2:55PM EDT (link)

is rampant! There is such an eagerness to propel blacks to leadership roles within the GOP, we’ve lost the ability to vet candidates (”Oh, it’s OK, he’s black and we need to show that we’re favorable to blacks.”)

In GA, a newly elected county officer ran against a strong candidate and won solely on the basis that he is black. Turns out, the guy was a local Democrat candidate less than 2 years ago. In FL, there is a Senate candidate with thousands of dollars of bounced checks and some unpaid child support. That campaign has been raising money like gangbusters since Nov. 5th.

It’s high time that the GOP stop trying to play the liberal’s affirmative action game. We can’t beat them at their game. We need to play our own!

As one who opposed him early on and still has questions...

AceInTX Saturday, April 25th at 11:57AM EDT (link)

I personally believe it would be a travesty to throw him overboard. The Party still has a problem with the brand and a credibility problem with it’s base, some of which Steele has been negligent in his failure to address…but that credibility gap is not limited to the chairman. It’s a systemic problem that involves the very committee members who are currently involved in a subversive attempt to undermine him and throw him over board.

I’ve been impressed with his house cleaning since he got there and what I see now is sour grapes from the RNC members who have watched their well placed cronies in the organization, (the very people who led us to this current state of affairs) sent packing…and their out to take Steele’s head and put their people back in position.

Steele needs to be given a chance to turn things around. I personally am not happy with the lack of coordination and message from the RNC, and I think they need to be working right now on nationalizing this election against the Democrats and their federal agenda and I’d like to see a little contrition from the Committee for propping up squishes like specter when he was up last time…but I don’t think he should be undermined as is currently being done!

So, let's not give the Dems

red4ever Saturday, April 25th at 12:01PM EDT (link)

what they want. If the DEMS hope to turn this loss (which happens in a democracy) into more Republican infighting, let’s not do it. Let’s just accept Steele as our leader, make sure he has the support to represent the party properly and move forward. Keep out disagreements private.

If they are gunning for you, don’t give them the ammunition.

It isn't Steele's fault...yet...

hinkdog Saturday, April 25th at 12:49PM EDT (link)

Steele hasn’t had time to really make his mark yet. You forget that we’re only 100 days into Obama’s presidency and he still has a 60 percent approval rating. The Republican Party has not yet had time or a chance to re-establish themselves as an alternative to the tax and spend, big government Democrats, primarily because the Democrats are still riding high on their victory a few months ago. If anything, even though the GOP lost this seat, it is somewhat of a positive trend. The Dem won the seat the past two cycles, and Obama won, by several percentage points. Tedisco only lost it by a few hundred votes. By 2010 and 2012, after they have more time to absorb how Obama and the Dems are flushing our future down the toilet, this district, and others, will be ready to go back to the GOP. 2010 is Steele’s real test.

Cute little blog you guys have here … does anyone actually visit it?

Scott Murphy’s victory in NY-20 where Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 70,000 (and outspent them 3-1) represents a rejection of the obstructionist agenda and scare tactics that have become the hallmark of House Republicans.

This is why I can't go to Next Right anymore

Section9 Saturday, April 25th at 1:32PM EDT (link)

Patrick has let the Astroturfers take over his forum. Next Right was a once-promising forum for Republicans to discuss ideas. Patrick and Soren Dayton sort of put the dadgum thing on autopilot and let the Trolls in the front door and poop all over the place with the latest set of talking points.

At least you guys know what RedState is for and you keep your can of Troll B-Gone around.

'Next Right' Comment Sections - Skip 'em

pharos Saturday, April 25th at 2:24PM EDT (link)

Agreed. I generally like the articles on Next Right too but usually skip the comment section.

The leftist trolls there simply highjack most threads and seem to outnumber the legitimate posters 3-to-1.

Not to mention how the trolls post profanity-laden garbage in most cases (i.e. hysterical unemployed nutjob RisingTide) - a good swift ban session has been in order for some time, but it appears no one is moderating it at all.

If Patrick isn't going to hire a moderator...

Section9 Saturday, April 25th at 3:12PM EDT (link)

…then he needs to tell us. Great articles by Patrick, Soren, John Henke, et al. But you’ll notice that no conservative heavyweights post over there, at least to my knowledge. It’s Astroturf Country.

The Next Right is supposed to be a site for Conservatives to interact with each other for movement-building ideas. You can’t do that if you’re fighting off trolls all the time.

Patrick and his friends need to moderate the site, ban the trolls, or shut it down.

The danger sign from NY-20 has little to do with Steele directly

civil_truth Saturday, April 25th at 2:09PM EDT (link)

What this election highlights is the difficulty that Republicans have in finding candidates who can run credible campaigns to get a majority of the votes.

It doesn’t matter what the polls say about general agreement with or against Obama, Democrats, Republicans. In the end, its about who wins all the House and Senate contests. Right now, the Democrats have strong majorities, and the only way we’re going to change that is to win more races. And we’re running uphill because of incumbent advantages.

Which means we need to be able to field candidates and run winning campaigns - and we’ve got 435 separate House contests and 33/34 Senate contest in 2010; one size is not going to fit all. Without this kind of in the trenches effort, the Democratic tumbrills are just going to roll along towards the inevitable historical outcome.

Diffuse dissatisfaction (or tea party enthusiasm) is just a substrate in solution, but without condensation nuclei (i.e. candidates) no visible changes will occur.

Apart from the message about our need to find strong candidates, the outcome of this race will have little impact on our nation, apart from entertaining the political equivalent of day-traders.

The Problem Is That They Ran a Career Politician

IJB Saturday, April 25th at 2:37PM EDT (link)

Republican career politicians are *death* to everyone these days, including Republican voters. I can’t think of too many career Republican politicians that I can stomach pulling the lever for these days.

The really important lesson from 1994 is less the ‘contract’ part, than that we ran a bunch of non-career politician candidates. Some of those that got elected didn’t work out to well for us, admittedly, but it was probably only half a dozen out of a several dozen.

I think we need to go back to that. Run Joe The Plumber types. Get ‘em from the Tea Party orgs. Etc.

Because, all I know is, I wouldn’t trust a career Republican politician right now any further than I can throw him/her. These days, they truly are indistinguishable from Dem politicians. (And, frankly, we should primary every one of them - not just Specter and McCain, but EVERYONE OF THEM.)

Maybe Fairfax County VA will signal a change on the lack of credible candidates front

ddstrain Saturday, April 25th at 3:31PM EDT (link)

Yes, Fairfax County has become a solid Blue on the electoral map. However, I recently attended a meeting where the GOP candidates for those Virginia House of Delegates seats covering Fairfax County spoke.

We have 14 delegate seats in Fairfax. In 2007, Democrats ran 8 (eight) candidate UNOPPOSED. In 2009, there are only 2 Demecrats running unopposed…and there is still time to find good candidates to run in those races. I’m rather pleased that we are running candidates and not just giving the Dems a free pass.

Among the 12 GOP candidates, we have 3 GOP incumbants. We have 3 of the challenging candidates are veterans. One of the vets is also affiliated with a political web developer and who writes occassionaly for Townhall.com. We have a former Commerce department deputy assistant undersecretary. We have a former Fairfax County Board chairman. We have a former DOJ official. All seemed articulate and energized.

I hope to compile bios and policy statements from each of the Fairfax House of Delegates condidates to post online. I also plan to submit written questions to each of them and post the responses online.

Virginia’s governor/lt. governor/AG race is getting the attention, but we also have elections for 100 delegates. These are just as important…and we know Lil Tim Kaine will throw DNC money all over the Commonwealth.

If you don’t have an election in their area this year, please consider helping out some GOP candidates in Virginia.

I will periodically post info about the Fairfax GOP efforts in this election year.

this is where it must start

David Hinz Saturday, April 25th at 6:12PM EDT (link)

we have to take back the township, county and city elections, and state houses. township officials run the various voting precincts — a lot of control over the election process. The Dems control most of the Sec of States, and THEY are the ones who oversee elections — demonstrate OHIO where the SoS allowed park benches as legal residences for Dem homeless voters.

And the State Houses control redistricting

ddstrain Saturday, April 25th at 6:50PM EDT (link)

Virginia needs a GOP house to ensure that redistricting is evenly treated.

Tedisco made his own bed

KCarpenter Sunday, April 26th at 2:39AM EDT (link)

The fact that it took Tedisco a month to come out against the stimulus, even after all of the house republicans voted against it, is why Tedisco lost.

I do not support the committee members that may have a problem with Steele. Makes me like Steele better than normal.

These committee members are the same folks we have had for years that shoved moderates down our throats. They do not want anyone that may cause a controversy.

The time for moderation is over. I would rather have most of the committee members replaced than Michael Steele.
