Republicans Propose Resolution to Rebrand Democrats, Obama; Update: Diluted Resolution Passes with Voice Vote

Republican National Committee members today will vote on a resolution to rebrand the Democratic Party the “Democrat Socialist Party,” upon the urging of leading conservative members of the committee.

In an email to committee members announcing the resolution, conservative stalwart James Bopp, Jr., said President Obama’s foremost intention is to reengineer the American way of life, and will stop at nothing short of restructuring our society “along socialist ideals.”

Bopp hopes their misguided efforts to rebrand the Democratic Party will serve as a galvanizing point in American politics, not unlike “President Reagan’s identification of the Soviet Union as the ‘evil empire’ galvanized opposition to communism.”

Not quite.

Unlike the “Evil Empire,” Republicans lost to the Democratic Party in a fair and free election – the hallmark of American democracy – to the tune of 9,500,000 votes. And then, of course, is the fact that we’re not, say, at war and with mutually-assured destruction looming overhead.

The Democratic Party may well be, as Bopp contends, on a slow, steady march towards Socialism, but passing such a resolution would be a four-minute mile run towards generational oblivion.

Nothing revives the party of old white men like some good ol’ Cold War rhetoric. Likewise, nothing will marginalize more independent voters who cast their ballot for a “Socialist” in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, and Michigan. That’ll get ‘em back in the fold, boys.

Resolving to refer to the opposition as Socialists will not win back the favor of the American people. If this asinine ideological rebuke is to accomplish anything, it will be a concession that Republicans are rhetorically ineffectual. Moreover, it will crystallize the notion that Republicans deserve their minority status.

The language of the resolution is not set in stone, however, and will likely be massaged, according to some committee members with knowledge of the process.

When the resolution passes – I’m told it likely will – the forceful rebuke will have been stricken. But the resolved language is not the problem. Indicative of the Republican Party’s present existential crisis, Republicans are earnestly debating the use of Cold War rhetoric as a means to gain favor with voters.

Such a debate signals a changing tide in the Republican Party. We’re no longer advocates for limited government and a strong national defense. We’re no longer a diverse coalition of voters. We’re no longer the party of optimism, and certainly not of hope.

The Republican Party of 2009 is an antagonistic minority party, wholly incapable of championing our causes of yesteryear. And a childish vote in favor of renaming the Democratic Party is a disgraceful reminder.

UPDATE: The committee adopted a diluted version of Bopp’s resolution this afternoon by a voice vote, dropping the absurd measure to label Democrats as Socialists.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, celebrating his first small victory in successfully managing an intra-party crisis, issued the following statement:

“The Republican Party strongly believes that a government which spends without restraint, incurs record amounts of debt, owns banks and makes cars is not the right kind of ‘change’ America needs. Republicans are united in opposition to the destructive policies of the President and Congressional Democrats. I am pleased that the committee adopted a resolution that focuses on the Democrats’ policies and their destructive effects on America’s economic engine, rather than attempting to rename our opponents. The RNC and the entire Republican Party is moving forward with strength and unity.”

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s a red meat thing, but it is also a childish waste of time to engage in this exercise when there are very real issues related to the mark toward socialism that the GOP should be fighting.

Instead, they are wasting time with frivolous resolutions and funding groups like the NRSC that is willingly picking candidates who support the march toward socialism.

    • Aaron Gardner

that would be a better use of their time today.

    • farstar99

If you don’t have the stomach to fight, move to France.

Otherwise, DailyKos and the Liberal Fascists, who won, will wipe the floor with you.

      • Brian Hibbert

Erick has done more fighting for our cause than probably the rest of the people here combined.

I haven’t seen you on national TV arguing points with the liberals.

  • Leopard1996

First, why would they brand the Democrat party socialist, then back RINO’s who agree with the socialism, a little hypocritical to me.

Second, why fight last generations war. This war is within the mainstream of our politics now. Fight the opposition on the issues, not on stupid nomenclature.

“…Republicans lost to the Democratic Party in a fair and free election.”

This election was bought and paid for, with much of the cold cash coming from unknown (*cough…middle east*) sources.

It’s widely accepted now that the sycophantic mainstream media boosted obama’s numbers by at least fifteen percent. He only won by five or six.

The media and the idiotic, high school primary methods in the early states insured that the Republican ticket was headed by a RINO.

Acorn brown shirts are currently under indictment in numerous states for voter registration fraud throughout the election process.

      Need I go on?

Hear me. As of Nov. 8, 2008, there will never, ever again be a fair and free election in this country.

      • stevedibble

This kind of stuff makes us sound like the Democrats after Bush took Florida.

The sooner we can move beyond conspiracy theories and start focusing on winning again, the sooner we’ll see progress.

        • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

First order of business should be preparing winning issues for 2010.

Hannity opens his show every night saying that President Obama is taking us “down the road to Socialism”. The RNC wants to rebrand the Democrat party as “socialist”. Tea Party-ers hold signs declaring that we have become the “Socialist States of America.

What is missing from all of this is dialogue explaining why socialism is a path down which we do not want this country to head. You hear pundits talking about the failures of socialism and its financial pitfalls, but yet have I heard about the true danger of socialism and its assault on individual liberties and freedoms. The polls reaffirm this, with younger voters becoming more and more accepting of socialism, without any real knowledge of what socialism is and the consequences of its methods.

Instead of tossing out “s-bombs” and focusing on “how much money this will cost us”, lets make the conversation about how socialism destroys individual identity, pits citizens against one another, replaces individual liberty with group fairness. Lets make the arguments that Hayek, Locke, Mill, Bastiat, and our forefathers made.

Republican (both voters and elected officials) don’t understand the Democrat/Socialist threat to our nation and are too timid in the face of opposition to raise the alarm.

Democrat voters are too stupid to understand that their ignorance is being used to build and fund a party that opposes, subverts, undermines, and tears down the very principals and mechanisms that are the foundation and life blood of this nation’s ability to survive and grow and feed ourselves and our children.

In other words, the Dems are self-loathing, self-destructive, and nationally suicidal and now they are in the driver’s seat and the Rebublican’s only plan of action is: “Ssssssh, keep your voices low, and don’t agitate them and just give them what they want no matter how crazy it sounds, or they will do some thing irrational and shocking”.

At some point you have to realize and accept that that plan won’t save you from going over the cliff, and that the only way to save us all from a fiery death is to announce to everyone in the nation that the Dems are all as mad as hatters and seize the wheel, stop the car, throw them out of the car, and get us back on the road prosperity.

The Democratic party (the party of Slavery) hasn’t changed and it should have been disbanded after the War Between the States because they never stopped using divisive tactics for what they think is political gain but is actually the road to suicide.

The Republicans need a good slogan, and a good person to say it, as Reagan once was.

We all know that good intentions often lead to H-E-double hockey sticks, and its the Democrats, with their lack of understanding of liberty, and opportunity, that are leading us there. They Democrats rarely consider unintended consequences in their over eager malaise into centralized government

        • E Pluribus Unum

The media is a huge, huge factor. Ignoring it as ‘just the playing field’ is just craptacularly foolish on multiple levels.

And anybody that thinks the government employee unions, ACORN, and the media are not actively cheating is wrong.

The notion that we lost this election ‘fair and free’ is a fantasy.

Any kickback the GOP does needs to include marginalizing the media, and getting the message out in spite of them.

Way to go RNC! Rather than come up with constructive opposition consisting of better ideas and appealing platforms, they’d rather demonstrate how little they have to offer the public by resorting to name-calling? Who are these guys and why are they speaking for us? Wanna see what damage this is doing, then check out the comments at:

its kinda unfair to pick on him when he can’t say anything back…

But… comments like this make the argument that resolution is a stick in the eye for liberals cause it is generating mobys… of course… their anecdotal based IQ doesn’t represent the real psychological reprecussions that may produce an unintended red herring effect.

If I were a more vindictive cuss, I’d LOL this…

but really i can’t laugh about something that’s wasteful… just not my nature.

  • General_Confusion

Why not call a socialist a socialist?

Are we really that afraid that someone may confuse the party as a party that stands for something?

Why not define the Democrats for what they are, or are we afraid we would not get the love and admiration of the MSM?

I don?t understand how this would in any way prevent us from then going on to say ?Yes we are the party of smaller government unlike the socialist Democrats?.

I really don?t think the ?Hide under our desk and ask the Democrats their blessing for our policies or opinions ? has really served us well over the past several years.

I for one welcome some political red meat as opposed to the soft pastels of Democrat-lite. At some point we really do have to point out the obvious.

    • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

Why not fight back. No, the GOP doesn’t want to fight back. It just wants to call names.

      • General_Confusion

You are correct, we desperately need to fight back.

However since ?fight back? is not happening with team ?go along, get along? I?ll take this.

Let?s just say what you consider name calling I consider properly labeling.

If fact it could actually be a great opportunity for a Reagan like teaching moment when we explain why we called them socialist and what a socialist is and why that is bad.

It sounds like you might agree with calling them something like… oh I dunno…the Neo-Nazi party?

        • sickofitall

Britcom, I couldn’t agree more, and furthermore it’s not inaccurate. The Obamination and his drooling hordes are not that far off from the National Socialist platform now- they want to take our guns away, they favor eugenics and revel in the bloodshed of those who most need protection. Both aspire to a control the media and establish a pure totalitarian state. Jonah Goldberg got this one right.

Stevedibble, Harlan’s right. The election was rigged from the get-go, by the MSM with a healthy assist from ACORN, the Black Panthers and the rest. There is a fundamental difference between ’08 and ’00- the issues in ’00 hung on technicalities of the mechanics of the voting process and was ultimately correctly decided by the Supreme Court despite some strictly partisan votes by Democrat appointees. ’08 represents a complete subversion and perversion of the electoral process. You and I were robbed, and just because it’s in the past doesn’t mean we should ignore what happened.

    • stevedibble

because the Democrats have been able to shift the meaning of “socialist” in the popular discourse.

It’s an interesting development – the term seems to have more effect now on its wielder than the intended target. So, when Republicans call Democrats “socialists”, the message that’s sent is not “Democrats are socialists”, but “Republicans are desperate”.

I feel like socialism isn’t even really a concern anymore, in the macro sense. People are less concerned with overriding ideology than they are with individual policy positions, and how they apply to tangible problems.

We need to focus more on specific issues and avoid these broad and ineffectual gestures. We’re being set up!

      • General_Confusion

If we are afraid of a words real meaning then what are we not afraid of.

Let?s take the time to teach Americans the real meaning of socialism and where it leads and the freedoms it destroys.

This is a good place to start the lesson.

When I see conservatives blasting fellow conservatives I always suspect we really have a liberal.

This resolution is a minor thing. It is no big deal, but still this article is devoid of any intelligent opposition or discussion. It is just highly emotional, vitriolic rhetoric…in short, purely liberal language.

I think your efforts to portray conservatives as being totally divided and in opposition to one another is just a scam, and I am surprised that Red State is working so hard to undermine conservatives. You should vet your writers better.

          Best regards,

What damage. Would you expect to see any thing different on the CNN blogs. That is the home of Democrat looney’s why are you listenint to that?

        • savethegop

If the GOP ever wants to grow, it will need to convert or at least appeal to the average voter. Like it or not, CNN (as liberal as it is) is the most popular outlet for news, so the comments there reflect what those voters are thinking. If you only listen to FOX you’d be lulled into believing that the party was doing fine and that everyone loved us. Not the best way to bring about a change in the electorate.

There is no one in cable news near FOX and OBTW to the ghost CNN is losing now to MSNBC that’s how bad CNN is!

Doesn’t the torture debate, military tribunals and Gitmo prove that if we engage on the substance we can indeed turn issues to our favor?

We have important points and real ideas to offer the American people on health care and entitlement reform which we will have to fight for in the next couple months. I sincerely hope can approach those issues seriously and discard these sideshow distractions.

  • Kyle-MI

The vast majority of the voting population has no idea what the word socialist means. With this historical illiteracy Democrats and the MSM with simply counterattack with the old McCarthyism ploy and most of the ‘moderates’ will drink it up and then ask for seconds.

We cannot attack with one-word campaigns. We have to educate the public on the issues. We have to attack on individual issues to turn public opinion without resorting to conservative buzzwords.

    • restofva

Anyone who understands the term already knows he is one.
After constantly rejecting being called a socialist and going ahead with the policies, what kind of license would we be giving them if we brand them as such and they go on to win an election. I can hear them now “the people voted for socialism”.

  • Diogenes314

How about one encouraging Republicans to refrain from referring to Dems as ‘liberal’? Attempting to relabel the opposition is not only childish, but pointless. But aquising in their Orwellian paradigm shift is counterproductive.

Maybe those here at Red State could set an example.

Or not. I guess it’s just me.
