Democratic Congressman Fears ‘Ambush’ by ‘Brown Shirt’ ‘Extremists’

For fear of being ‘ambushed’ by Republican “lynch-mobs,” Democratic Congressman Brian Baird (WA-3) said he refuses to hold in-person town hall meetings over the summer’s month-long Congressional recess.

Citing the G.O.P.’s “Brown Shirt tactics” as the impetus for his decision, Baird told the Columbian he will instead host a telephone town hall, thereby lessening the ability for “extremists”—which ostensibly is anyone expressing legitimate dissent—to “shout and make YouTube videos.”

Baird’s aggressive, albeit obtuse, rhetoric is the newest installment in the Republican and Democratic parties’ debate as to the nature of the protesters – organic reactions versus highly-orchestrated mobs of extremists.

While Baird’s patently offensive Nazi SA comparison is indeed more aggressive than the DNC’s portrayal of protesters as mentally unstable conspiracy theorists bent on proving Obama’s Kenyan birth, the sentiment is not wholly unlike the opinions expressed by Lanny Davis and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Speaker Pelosi categorically rejected the notion that conservatives could oppose the President’s domestic agenda on legitimate grounds and maintained that critics of Obama’s health care overhaul were brandishing “swastikas and symbols like that” at town hall meetings.

Echoing Pelosi’s ridiculous opinion, Davis said in a posting on Politico’s Arena the Republican “shout-downs” were a classic example of “fascist tactics” and were a detriment to civil debate.

A greater detriment to civil debate, as it turns out, is the decision to not engage in one, like the case of Congressman Baird.

Community organizing is only acceptable as a singular means to effect liberal change. Critics of Obama’s “Great Society,” however, are pitch-fork toting, NASCAR loving, civil debate hating, Nazis.

In the absence of a public town hall, Baird’s pitch-fork toting, NASCAR loving, civil debate hating, Nazi constituents can reach the Congressman’s D.C. office by phone at (202) 225-3536.

But I’m highly inclined to visit his office and picket a day or two during the recess.

…or I’d be there with ya. But I’m all for it, I’ll help with the tech side of that, if you want :D

I think that’s a large part of it. He doesn’t want to be yet another Democrat congressman stumbling for words and looking like an idiot on a YouTube video.

Baird caved and held a town hall meeting.

Now every talk show on Fox and now even Rush Limbaugh is touting the youtube video from the town hall meeting:

Is it me, or is this a real obvious attempt by Democrat leadership to prevent reps who are on the fence from hearing from their constituents?

All of the protests I have been to have been respectful and non-violent, even with “community agitators” attempting to start a fight.

And that protesters are paid by the insurance industry? If they had the money, they really should get better signs with a coordinated message. Or at least use the money they are paid to get a babysitter, there are a lot of kids at these things.

I am hopeful that the American people will see where the lies are coming from and how blatant they are.

If I were one of Congressman Brian Baird’s constituents, I’d would send him a postcard. I am a great believer in post card correspondence. Ordinary mail in envelopes has to go through an extensive security check, but a simple post card will transit the House of Representatives mail system much more quickly.

A nice thing about a post card is that the limited writing space makes you state your thoughts simply and succinctly. This is probably the best way to communicate with Rep.Baird since he is afraid of the people in his district. I’m not in his district, but I think I’ll give him my opinion anyway.

Herr Baird is a coward and sadly my Congressman. I believe Herr Baird is more of a Washington DC Congressman than a Washington state Congressman and hopefully we’ll get a chance to fire Herr Baird next year..

Isn’t it funny how progressives always seem to see their own evils in everyone else. Or is this some Orwellian effort to double speak and deflect criticism by blaming the people first.

This has to be what if felt like to live in Germany in the mid 1930′s

Speaking of protest signs—-I think it would be great to carry a sign with Hillary Clinton’s photo on it and her eloquent, dignified words:

?I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration, somehow you are not patriotic, and we should stand up and say, ?We are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration.??

…And has a Cook PVI index of “Even”.
(In fact, WA-2 is a similar district, though somewhat more democratic than WA-3.)

I’d say this is one guy that could possibly be sent packing with the right combination of incumbent arrogance (keep it coming Brian!), national mood, and solid GOP challenger.

Looks like the WAGOP should get cracking….

There is a large anti-war contingent here and they’re a large part of his base.

He was reamed after he reversed on the promise to no longer fund the wars. He no longer has the base, and this move should really push the middle away from him. He even has the risk of being primaried.

His district is rapidly gaining wealthy folks who are abandoning Portland, OR due to a recent extra tax for the rich. Oregon has a high income tax and Washington has none. This will only push the district farther towards the R’s.

    Fascism
    1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
    2. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
    2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.

Why are voters angry? Why would citizens rise up to practice their God given right to free speech and to petition our government? One big reason is the snide, condescending way people in power in the Democratic Party treat us! They don’t take our anger seriously! There must be something wrong with US!!! NO!!! It is the government, being held hostage by a bunch of elitist, snobbish fools, that is wrong!!!

The more the Democratic leaders and their special interest cronies chastise us for our anger, the angrier we will get!!!!

The ‘brown shirts’ are the liberals, NOT the peacefull protesters!
We have to get rid of these fools next election – approx 16 months away.

that should give him plenty of time to read and digest the bill, right?

Or is he off on a “fact-finding” mission to somewhere that just HAPPENS to be a great vacation resort like Congresscritters tend to do.
