Anxious to capitalize on a summer’s worth of anti-tax Tea Parties and the fierce public opposition to President Barack Obama’s health care reforms, over 1,000 California Republican delegates and activists ascended upon Indian Wells for the state Party’s semi-annual convention over the weekend – but one high-profile Republican was conspicuously absent, sparking criticism from attendees and her likely-primary opponent Chuck DeVore.
Citing the physical demands of her ongoing treatment for breast cancer, for which she was diagnosed last March, potential GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina said her schedule of radiation treatments would not permit her attendance at the convention.
But the DeVore campaign has noted that, while Fiorina’s health curiously precluded her from attending the party gathering, she spent much of the following Monday campaigning in Fresno with ranchers and participated via satellite in Fortune’s “Most Powerful Women Summit.”
Laying the foundation for the belief that Fiorina is somehow casually exploiting her illness for the benefit of her campaign, State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore told The Fresno Bee he finds “it curious that her campaign said she was unable to make the convention for health reasons, and yet, … she was engaged in what appears to be a pretty standard, strenuous campaign day yesterday – the day after the convention.”
Indicative of his campaign’s reliance on rumor-mongering of a particularly vicious and fatuous sort, DeVore’s critics say his campaign’s latest assault on Fiorina is predicated on the notion that he can cobble together support among the GOP rank and file by fostering the double-edged rumor that his opponent is either too ill to campaign against Bay Area liberal Barbara Boxer or too liberal to campaign for the Republican nomination – or, perhaps, both.
“Carly says daily treatments keep her home, yet she campaigned Monday. Conclusion: as Pluto is no longer a planet, Monday is no longer a day,” wrote campaign spokesman Josh Treviño on Twitter.
Fiorina, whose campaign is stalled in the exploratory phase, will “continue to take day trips with a limited schedule, like she did in Fresno, in order to meet with people and hear first hand their concerns about our state and our country,” said spokeswoman Beth Miller.
Sources familiar with Fiorina’s event in Fresno say it was neither “strenuous” nor absent of conservatives, contending it was a casual agricultural campaign event. Moreover, the event in Fresno was conveniently—and necessarily—located near where Fiorina receives her radiation treatment – whereas Indian Wells is roughly 400 miles away.
As for Fiorina’s participation in Fortune’s summit, the suggestion that she is cherry-picking her appearances to deliberately avoid Republicans is asinine. And it’s particularly offensive when considering the topic. Fiorina and fellow cancer survivor Elizabeth Edwards spoke on behalf of “Stand up to Cancer,” a star-studded campaign to fund cancer research, both of whom were unable to attend in-person due to their treatment regimen.
Fiorina, who is in the final weeks of radiation treatment, is expected to make a definitive announcement about her intentions to run for Senate in the coming weeks.
But should she ultimately decide to challenge Boxer, California Republican activists should expect to see Fiorina at the next state GOP convention in February – healthy.

Hmmm
Neil Stevens Wednesday, September 30th at 8:02PM EDT (link)I like that. When you can’t actually refute the record, which is that Carly Fiorina is making video appearances nationwide, day trips to wealthy donors, and even trips to Italy, but can’t frigging show up to the California Republican Convention, just call it “asinine.”
Of course, you DC/east coast types are going to be long gone when the general election comes. The unions, the Democrats, and the press are going to take your wishy-washy ‘offense’ and cram it down Carly’s throat when she can’t campaign in the general.

I think we agree on issues of Party more than you would like to admit as well
AceInTX Thursday, October 1st at 11:07AM EDT (link)The frustration you are feeling with Carley is the frustration I have felt with the Party over all…and both of the problems stem from an imperious and arrogant attitude from Carley and the DC Leadership of the Party….I’m not sure how old you are and how long you’ve been at this…but I’ve been at this for 20 years…and I used to take a Jaded view of people who think like I do now….but after 20 years of this…I’ve lost patience…because what Carley is doing is what all the Republicans I have a problem with do.
They think they’re entitled to our support and our money just because they’re well connected…and that we don’t have any right to expect anything of them once we’ve graciously allowed them to represent us….
I don’t have a problem with ALL Republicans….I don’t have a problem with ALL the DC establishment, I don’t have a problem with ALL the state party leadership….I don’t even have a problem with ALL RINOs believe it or not…
But this stuff going on in CA with Carley and Meg, or in NY with Scrazfava, (or however you spell it…I’ll just call the scumbag Scarface), or in Florida with Crist, or in IL with Kirk…and on and on is just the tip of the iceberg.
And I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not…but I’ve written some pretty long posts in various dialogues with you and I wouldn’t waste my time if I didn’t care what you think on all this…
bottom line though is that we have the same goals long term…I think we have the same philosophy though I think I tend toward Social issues more instinctively…we just keep butting heads on short term issues because I’ve had it with the current direction of the party and I think it’s time for a little discipline to be administered…we may even agree on that general topic as well and the rub may only be in how we at the bottom can discipline people at the top who have no reason to listen to us…and have no skin to be lost for continuing their current course as long as we blindly continue to follow along…and send them money…and knock on doors for them…while expecting nothing in return for all our work.

Fiorina should just say NO...she like KBH is ruining...
JadedByPolitics Wednesday, September 30th at 8:03PM EDT (link)what should be a momentous moment for Conservatives by MUCKING up the works in two states. What is wrong with these women? are they so egotistical that they cannot see that they are creating havoc where none need be? I will have to say the answer to that is NO! I think Fiorina’s whining about her cancer instead of just bowing out to take care of her health is pathetic and KBH instead of just running for the Senate again decided to take on a GREAT Governor for whom she doesn’t stand a snowball chance in hell and instead is splitting D-lite Republican from the Conservative’s in the grassroots! The_Gadfly Thursday, October 1st at 7:44AM EDT (link)isn’t even believable in Governor Moonbeam’s world.
I would expect the former CEO of HP to know about a little thing we like to call Video Conferencing. You might have heard of it? It use to be something only fortune 500 companies could afford, but as recently as this past year it has been popping up at places like, oh I don’t know, the Red State Gathering in Atlanta for a mere couple hundred people.
A competent campaigner ought to know that the CPR is a must do event. Not being there is sort of like missing both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary in the Presidential campaign. And if her cancer treatment limited her travel distance, that she ought to contact the organizers to make an appearance by alternate means. I would have expected a competent PR flack to advise her that setting up the vidcon would show respect for the base while at the same time offering the possibility of generating sympathy for battling a disease many women fear.
Making no appearance at CPR and then doing a fundraising event the very next day is spitting if the face of the people she needs voting for her. The one theme which is consistent through out the entire electorate right now is that voters are fed up with elected officials and other elites treating them as serfs. That’s what’s generating the anger out there. Successful candidates will harness that energy, not call it down on themselves.
We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.

illinoisconservative, the cost to Fiorina's health...
penguin2 Thursday, October 1st at 10:31AM EDT (link)is not to be underestimated or minimized. Looking at other candidates that have been actively in treatment or having recently finished intensive therapy, the toll is enormous. I loved Fred Thompson who was my first choice; I can tell you just by looking at him, his cancer whether in remission or not, kept him from having the fire in the belly necessary to have taken on the rigors of the campaign.
In the hardball world of politics it isn’t so much insensitivity being expressed here, but frustration that an individual may use their health as a sympathy vote getter. And even if she isn’t, her campaign or supporters who do so, imperil her success.
Her actions are suspect because, as Gadfly pointed out a virtual presence was possible. Ignoring the convention and then being seen campaigning the next day brings up good faith issues.

When Fred Thompson announced that he had had cancer
Scope Wednesday, September 30th at 8:19PM EDT (link)he lost many people because they didn’t think he could survive a presidential term. I have a friend who recently had breast cancer surgery. She had one lymph node that was affected, and, the doctors agreed that she didn’t need radiation, as the cancer was contained. No guarantees for sure, and if you are in the earlier stages, there are at least a few drugs that have the purpose of trying to insure that the cancer doesn’t reoccur. I wish the best for Fiorino with her health problems, however, if you have such serious health problems, why would you not be more concerned about your personal health, rather than putting your energies into a stressful campaign to win a seat that you may not be able to occupy?
Funny enough....
Joshua Trevino Wednesday, September 30th at 8:35PM EDT (link)….when Fiorina announced that she couldn’t attend the CRP due to her cancer treatments, and then showed up to campaign in Fresno the next day(!), a CA reporter told me that “some witless Carly flack will immediately bark ‘victim’ as soon as the hypocrisy is pointed out.”
QED!
All I’ll say is this: there’s no need for rumors here. The facts speak for themselves:
1) Carly Fiorina indeed has suffered from an especially brutal and awful experience with breast cancer, and she continues to endure draining treatments for it.
2) Carly Fiorina indeed has declared, on the record, that this is the only reason that she did not show up for the CRP.
3) Carly Fiorina indeed went to campaign in Fresno the very next day.
If this is “rumor-mongering of a particularly vicious and fatuous sort,” you may take it up with the man who broke the story: John Ellis of the Fresno Bee. Neither Chuck DeVore nor his campaign has the slightest interest in attacking a cancer victim per se — the demands of ordinary decency, and the fact that Mrs DeVore is herself a cancer survivor, demand otherwise.
Naturally, you wish to advance this lie, as a means of deflecting attention from the pathetic spectacle of Carly Fiorina being caught in a bad spot — by a small-town beat reporter.
Oh, by the way, James: “DeVore’s critics say”? “Sources familiar with Fiorina’s event in Fresno say”? As an NCO once asked me, you got a mouse in your pocket, or do you contain Whitmanesque multitudes?
The issue here is not whether Fiorina will be too sick to campaign, nor even whether she lied about the demands of her treatments. She’ll be perfectly well enough to campaign — she’s already scheduled her trips to Italy and Brazil, available at carlyfiorina.com! — and her actions speak loudly enough without need for explanation or embellishment from our side. Rather, the issue is whether her campaign grasps how it looks when it does this sort of thing, and whether it will ever exhibit the basic competence necessary to run for Fresno’s dogcatcher, much less Fresno’s Senator.
Evidence so far, from her scheduler and her shills, is no.
We are but warriors for the working-day.

Aaron Gardner Wednesday, September 30th at 9:56PM EDT (link)I was more making the point that neither her nor Carly seem to care enough to even comment directly to us simpletons here at RedState or the Republican base in CA.
One might say it is indicative of her campaign’s inside the beltway, top down style of “leadership”.

You're totally correct.
Joshua Trevino Wednesday, September 30th at 10:11PM EDT (link)But you know what? I hope they do correct themselves and start to engage. The party and movement would be stronger for it.
I guess that requires them caring about the party and movement, though.

She plays the "victim" well
JoeG Wednesday, September 30th at 10:21PM EDT (link)She did it all the time at HP.
She whined that they were picking on the girl when they fired her.
It as simple as this...either you want to be a Senator from Califirnia or you don't...either you're serious about running or your not...
AceInTX Wednesday, September 30th at 9:49PM EDT (link)I didn’t need Devore to “rumor monger” in order to come to the conclusion that either Carley is too sick or too liberal to run because it seems pretty obvious to me that she doesn’t care enough about the Republican Party to seek it’s blessings before accepting the anointing of the powers that be to place hold a spot in the CA race that might better be held by someone who gave a crap about winning…
It seems to me she needs to make a decision. If her illness will effect her health to the point where she won’t be able to campaign effectively…or govern effectively…maybe she should take her self out of the running and come back once she’s better…
on the other hand…if her health isn’t the issue…but she isn’t serious about getting in this to win it…she needs to get over herself and get out of the way for someone who is serious about it!

While being more in Fiorina's camp...
mikefisk Wednesday, September 30th at 10:08PM EDT (link)…she’s got to cut this out. Either she’s running, or she’s not. Go all in, before DeVore, the press, or both cause you a death by a thousand cuts.
At the very least, I can’t fault DeVore’s level of energy that he is putting into the race. Here’s to hoping that, whatever happens, we can finally put Babs Boxer into the retirement that she so richly deserves and the people of the state of California so desperately need.

OK, I'll play. I don't see Devore beating Boxer...
smagar Wednesday, September 30th at 10:12PM EDT (link)…but maybe I’m not reading/seeing the right stuff.
If I wanted to see evidence, good evidence that Chuck Devore has a realistic chance of beating Barbara Boxer, where would I look?

I think you should start with who has the better chance.
Aaron Gardner Wednesday, September 30th at 10:32PM EDT (link)Since the polling shows both losing to Boxer currently.
Back in July Fiorina’s favorables were 7% with her unfavorables at 12% making a -5 approval index. As of Sept 25th her unfavorables remained unchanged and her favorables went up by 1% making her approval index -4.
For DeVore we only have numbers from the Sept 25th Rassmussen poll, which shows his favorables at 7% and his unfavorables at 9%, giving him an approval index of -2.

Or are you trying to say the Carly will beat Boxer? If so please show me where to look for evidence, good evidence that Fiorina has a realistic chance of beating Boxer.

Ditto
gahazzah Thursday, October 1st at 9:30PM EDT (link)I suppose I should have made that comment to smagar.
I don’t see the point of supporting a candidate who thinks they cannot win. If the rumors are true, Fiorina has to know about the NRSC position which would explain her lackluster campaigning and unwillingness to self-fund.
When you get to the better chance of winning argument you have to factor in spirit, drive and moxie. Fiorina has none of that if she’s running just to tie up resources.
/government
Several places.
Joshua Trevino Wednesday, September 30th at 10:38PM EDT (link)Friday’s Rasmussen poll, showing him holding Boxer to under 50% and within single digits, is where I’d look first. That’s pretty huge for a state assemblyman 14 months out.

I see your point---that IS good news. Thanks, Josh. nt

I have to admit...this is an entertaining show
smagar Wednesday, September 30th at 10:36PM EDT (link)It reminds me of Braveheart.
Two bodies of warriors charge at each other, chop each other to bits, and the “winner” staggers away.
Is this normally how CA Republicans choose their Senatorial candidates?
That explains how Barbara Boxer keeps getting reelected.

Normally it's not this exciting

Y'all might want to think twice about the bullying tone prevalent on this site nowadays
smagar Thursday, October 1st at 7:49AM EDT (link)Redstate hasn’t been this rude since the days of Thomas.
Look at this particular subthread. A longtime Contributor (mbecker908) punks on a commenter who, while he’s posted on this topic before, hasn’t posted one word in this particular thread…and three regular commenters (see below) jump on with “heh heh me too” comments.
The tone of illinoisconservative’s comment upthread (will you have her scrubbing floors and cookin’ yer food a few days after surgery?)
was a tad insensitive, but no more insensitive than Jaded’s comment about Fiorinia “whining about cancer.”
So what happens? Aaron Gardner and Neil—-who, as a moderator, should be setting a better example—jump in and start getting all personal on illinoisconservative. Very, very adult of you.
Please spare me the tripe about politics not being beanbag. There’s no excuse for adults behaving like punks. And, IMO, the comments section on Redstate is now dominated by bullies.

Aaron Gardner Thursday, October 1st at 8:20AM EDT (link)My point is we all pull out our preferred knives here on RS. It isn’t an echo chamber, we challenge each others politics daily.
You may not say “heh” bet you are dismissive and disrespectful in your own right. I provided polling information on DeVore and Fiorina to you on more than one occasion and you have ignored it an continued to claim Fiorina has the better chance of winning. Then when Joshua Trevino refers to the same poll without providing a link, you become respectful and concede the “good news”.
Sometimes the things you don’t say are more disrespectful than the things you do.
I suppose I could go on and imply that you are a punk and a bully, but that isn’t how an adult should act. Is it?

Wow but we're getting all sensitive and wimpy.
mbecker908 Thursday, October 1st at 8:41AM EDT (link)1. If you think this is rude stay the hell away from any discussion I have have with clownfool.
2. With respect to proudgop, I don’t really know much about her other than she was involved in a tussle with Aaron and a couple of others in another diary earlier this week. I read a couple of the comments but didn’t follow the thread, and frankly I can’t remember whether I tossed in anything there or not, but I don’t remember it if I did.
3. I do recall that pg was pretty huffy about Fiorina and one of the big issues was whether or not she was going to self-fund. I don’t much care one way or the other at this juncture, but when one is heavily involved in a pretty pointed discussion I’m surprised when they go AWOL when a new diary comes up that could be said to challenge the underpinnings of the earlier argument.
4. With respect to Firoina’s cancer, color me totally insensitive. And, please feel free to expand said insensitivity to any major health issue for any potential - or actual - candidate. If you’re gonna run for office you’ve gotta be able to run and with a problem like this one, the potential to hammered by the Ds is, shall we be kind and just say, about 100%.
5. I’ll pass on more commentary on Fiorina here, other than to reinforce the fact that I think her tenure at HP was a total disaster, and that she could lead a tweaker to pile of meth in the middle of the room. I’m also really unimpressed by her support of McCain. Etc.
6. With respect to your last paragraph, we have people bounding in here lately who, while professing to be “Republicans” or “conservatives” stake out positions for which they can make no cogent argument and which they are totally unable to defend when confronted with facts and history. They get, quite rightly, beaten to a pulp with facts and history and finally retreat to the final defense of whining fools, “YOU’RE, YOU’RE A BULLY!”
Better that we’re “dominated by” bullies who have an appreciation for and an understanding of history and fact than we fade into the ether because we’re overrun by fools and trolls. If someone attempts to make an argument and finds they can’t defend it and can’t rally support for it but keeps up the foolishness, they deserve what they get.

Gee, smagar, you are just the typical moderate.
janis Thursday, October 1st at 5:04PM EDT (link)Not too hot, not too cold, just moderate. Not too rude, not too polite, just moderate. Not too conservative, not too liberal, just moderate.
My least favorite memory of you as a commenter is when you decided to defend the rights of protesters to be wherever they wanted to be at a military funeral when the government wanted to pass a law declaring that they had to stay so many feet away from the proceedings. Some crap or other from you about “First Amendment” protection. Haven’t had any use for you since then and that was probably a good two years ago. Peculiar, you know, the things you choose to defend.
This leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Jeff Walden Thursday, October 1st at 5:42AM EDT (link)I went to see DeVore talk locally around the beginning of August. He was entertaining and informative and more or less about where I’d want a candidate to be (little quibbles - I prefer flat tax, he prefers fair - aside). Whether he can be elected or not, I couldn’t say, being fairly new to the state and being pretty close to the liberal heartland in the state as well.
That said, trying to make hay over this seems somewhat petty. It does seem to me that “benefit of the doubt”, as illinoisconservative says, is due here, at least at this stage, being such a distance from the primary itself.
What I don’t quite understand, tho, is why? Sure, name recognition, but is it really the case that attacks are immediately necessary to get recognition? He gives a good speech, and he’s certainly making an effort to get out and in front of people to climb the recognition mountain. Nobody knows if that’s enough or not, but it might be.
In any case, if it isn’t, aren’t there more important points upon which to base rhetorical distinctions than missing a party meeting, ones that would illustrate real, substantive differences? This is inside, inside baseball, or so it seems to me.
(My impression so far is that Fiorina would be less conservative on a handful of issues than I’d prefer, probably abortion most notably, and that DeVore would be much preferable solely on the issues. Unless I’ve seriously misunderstood both their politics, I’ll almost certainly check off DeVore in the primary. However: there are more principled and less principled ways to win a primary, and this feels like it leans more toward the latter than the former.)
This isn't petty, it shows a critical weakness in Carly's ability to win.
The_Gadfly Thursday, October 1st at 8:05AM EDT (link)See my comment above about not even believable in Gov. Moonbeam’s world for why it is whining.
If Carly doesn’t have the political smarts to know CRP was a must do event, she doesn’t have the smarts to take on Boxer. I know that and I don’t even live in CA.
As for me personally, the only way I would vote for her is if her opponent were Barrack Obama. What she did to HP shouldn’t be done to a mom & pop grocery store let alone a decent technology company. I don’t expect her to make better decisions in elected office.
We’ve been called racists enough now that it shouldn’t bother us any more.
