RNC Unveils New Website, Rebranding Campaign for GOP

RNC Hiccups Met with DNC Derision, Updated Below

The Republican National Committee will unveil a new website early Tuesday morning that promises to increase grassroots participation and offers improved navigability and smarter marketing and fundraising tools for the GOP, according to party officials.

Upon reaching the new GOP.com, RNC Chairman Michael Steele takes a virtual step onto the computer screen and leads users on a tour of the site’s new features.

“Notice anything different?” asks Steele. “It’s the new GOP.com. It’s a forward-looking, open-platform for the party of new ideas. If you’re a Republican activist, this is your space.”

The developers of the new website hope to capitalize on the organic activism that gave way to Tea Parties across the nation by “creating a larger, more informed, more organized, and more energized Republican community.”

Conscious of the propensity for online social networking to mobilize activists, the new website was designed with an unmistakable attentiveness to social media and blogging, having devoted a significant portion of the landing page’s real estate to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr.

At first glance, the RNC’s new digital threads look nothing like a typical political website. From the dynamic logo featuring user-submitted pictures of supporters to the refreshingly simple navigation menu, the revamped and reorganized GOP web presence represents a commonly-preached but rarely-practiced belief on Capitol Hill: that the best ideas come from outside the Beltway.

Said one RNC official familiar with the project: “We tried to break the mold here. None of the firms we hired have ever worked in politics.”

In addition to seamlessly incorporating prominent social networks like Facebook and Twitter into their new platform, the RNC also revised their now-defunct in-house social network, myGOP. Renamed to represent Steele’s embrace of organic activism and community engagement, their new social network, dubbed “OurGOP,” allows users to organize by location, issue, or candidate slate.

And as a supplement to the new “you-centric” social network, RNC officials note an additional innovative feature: users can securely login with third-party credentials, including OpenID and Facebook rather than creating a new account.

The new website is the latest aspect of Steele’s comprehensive rebranding campaign for the GOP, who weathered two consecutive election-year losses in 2006 and 2008. The 2010 midterm elections, Steele hopes, will be different. And that difference will be fostered by surging online conservative activism.

“At GOP.com something new is happening. And that something is you,” said Steele in his video introduction.

UPDATE: As Politico’s Ben Smith points out, the RNC’s “Future Leaders” page is curiously—or perhaps candidly—blank.

The Democratic National Committee gleefully noted the error to reporters this morning, echoing the “it’s funny because it’s true” criticisms voiced on Twitter today.

Suggesting the blank page is somehow emblematic of the GOP’s withering crop of leaders, one DNC spox told Talking Points Memo “there are no future leaders in the GOP. As the GOP continues to champion the same failed policies of the past, recycle the same failed leaders of the past like Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich, and fails to get that the American people aren’t looking for a party that just says ‘NO’ to progress, we rate this claim ‘True. So, very true.’”

Hoping to recover from their early-morning fumble, the RNC updated the page to reflect Steele’s belief that ‘action begins with the individual, and that grassroots activism holds the key to future GOP success.’

“Who are the future leaders of the Republican Party? You are — you, the people who make America work,” the new site reads.

The page does not currently feature any prominent Republican elected official or activist, but says supporters may send an email to FutureLeaders@GOP.com to acknowledge “stand-out, Republican leaders who don’t get the acclaim they deserve.”

Are they going to quit the annoying fundraising snailmails?

bk Tuesday, October 13th at 1:56AM EDT (link)

Those are pretty insulting. I pretty much quit giving to any national charity or political operation. If you give some token amount they end up spending about 5x that amount asking you for more money. All my donations are local or targeted.

Tea partiers recognized global warming and cap and trade are frauds

katesmith Tuesday, October 13th at 3:07AM EDT (link)

They know many in the GOP have allowed and encouraged this scam including their guy McCain. It could have been stopped a few years ago but wasn’t. That’s why people spent their finite time and money to travel to meetings in the past several months. I’m more interested in knowing why anyone who advocates cap and trade isn’t impeached.

And now Lindsey "I'm About To Cry" Graham...

Dress it up or not, the Republican Part,y as it’s currently led, is a dinosaur. Just look at who is all over Fox in the numerous arguments against Dem/Obama initiatives - conservatives, not Pubs.

Then what is the GOP?

Rightshift Tuesday, October 13th at 9:25AM EDT (link)

If conservatives are the only stark contrast between the Dem/Obama “initiative” rhetoric and an opposing view… then the “GOP” hasn’t differentiated itself between Dems and themselves…

…frankly with guys like McCain, Graham, and Steele acting as reps of the GOP, you now have Democrats and Democrat-Lite…
What? 2/3rds less socialism than your regular democrat?

The problem for the GOP is they don’t have the stones to change the game… we’re now playing on a Liberal playing field and ‘competing’ with the message of who can better manage this BIG government more efficiently. Small Government is a punchline for votes, not an exercised plank in the platform.

I don’t hear the GOP making any comments on the CONSTITUTIONALITY of ANYTHING being wrought in Congress these days (especially this so call Health Care reform). Its time that starts being used as the standard by which legislation is made… someone says ‘I want government freebies’ … the answer should better be ‘No sorry, not in the Constitution’ … go get a job!

Too many ‘yes’ men… not enough Reagans in the party.

As someone from the outside looking into the GOP. It is hard to reconcile pages like this. With what my own eyes have seen these past two decades.

As far as I’m concerned. The above page is a lie. Either that or the Republicans that made this site. Have never watched their own party govern.

Criticism Moe?

Rightshift Tuesday, October 13th at 12:46PM EDT (link)

I’m curious, Sir…

Just what does the GOP stand for these days? I frankly think I hit the nail on the head… you may differ in your point of view… but just WHAT does the GOP stand for? I hear Dems say ‘X’ and the Republican party chimes “me too - Y” Which is really X just rephrased a different way.

When the GOP runs away from the conservative platform, they lose. Are you saying that where the GOP is today is where they should be? All this “Big Tent” moderate “embrace everything, stand for nothing” rhetoric that has all the strength of a wet noodle?

I’m curious, Sir… just where should the GOP be?

I can’t think of even one current office-holder who “gets it” in the sense of fully honoring the Founders’ wishes and unsurpassed wisdom.

Obviously, we have to play with the team that’s available, just as we did when we were kids doing pickup games and had to take the fat guy who couldn’t run to 1st base in less than a half-hour. But that doesn’t mean we stop looking for better base runners next time.

Rightshift Tuesday, October 13th at 12:40PM EDT (link)

… Congress has just as much a responsibility to uphold the Constitution as Congress does… don’t dismiss Congress’s lack of restraint, especially during the Reagan years.

Reagan got what he wanted from the Congress because he went straight to the people who in turn pressured Congress, but to that end, Congress porked up their bills and Reagan really didn’t have much choice, either sign or veto. Frankly at times I think he should’ve vetoed the porked up bills.

But all legislation comes from Congress, FIRST! Meaning they should invoke the restraint FIRST before anyone else.

“Sometimes the law defends plunder and participates in it. Sometimes the law places the whole apparatus of judges, police, prisons and gendarmes at the service of the plunderers, and treats the victim - when he defends himself - as a criminal.” — Frederic Bastiat

Of course, that is quite right

RedBeard Tuesday, October 13th at 12:51PM EDT (link)

But I still wish Reagan had used his veto pen a few more times. It’s true that his vetoes were overridden several times by an unwise Congress, but the veto is still a very effective weapon.

I am more of a substance guy and this site leaves much to be desired.

Marcus_Traianus Tuesday, October 13th at 8:49AM EDT (link)

The layout is kluge and too busy. Simplicity is obviously not part of the scheme.

So if I want to find the Republican health care alternative plan or jump to positions on major issues, how many clicks is that? Where in Heavens name is all the substance? Did anybody actually look at the flow?

This might be nice for the younger demographic- with a lot of patience. But for older, less technologically sophisticated voters it is a bust. The “look and feel” is too flashy with not enough content or rationalization of links.

Look at GOP.gov, that is a much better site. By the way, what is the issue with getting all sites to look ubiquitously the same? Are we afraid that having the same navigation on say, the Minority Leaders page, NRCC, GOP.gov, GOP.com. etc. might make it too easy for people to find content?

D-. If they wanted help from professionals or honest feedback, thet should have asked for it. I am always willing to help.

One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Website consistency

Sean Hackbarth Tuesday, October 13th at 10:59AM EDT (link)

Site consistency would be helpful, but all the sites you mention have different constituencies. Some are government sites (gop.gov) while other are party/campaign sites. While there’s a GOP, it’s made up of many different parts. Neither Steel nor any Republican in Congress can declare that all websites have to look a certain way.

Disclaimer: I manage one of those sites, Republican.Senate.Gov.

All due respect Sean, but you guys should talk

Marcus_Traianus Tuesday, October 13th at 11:21AM EDT (link)

Trust me, I understand none of this is easy but the same “theme” and “look and feel” should be part of the plan. That starts with everybody moving in the same direction.

Talk to each other, make contact on Linked-in or start some kind of contact group, The brainpower and experience you guys possess has to be staggering. Imagine if you set aside the differences to harness that?

People find government affairs vaunting due to the complexity and sheer magnitude of information. I feel very strongly a key to our success is decoding the mystery and putting usable information in people’s hands. They are interested like never before so we need to baby step them through the process.

I am often asked questions such as “What is the Republican alternative health care plan (quickly followed by HA!). I know enough to answer the question, but my 50 year old novice neighbor that wants to get involved in the debate can’t. But he can surf the web and complains there is not one GOP site where he can arm himself with the answer to that question in one click.

My approach has always been- throw out what you know and look at things from a novice’s perspective. You would be surprised at how much easier, intelligent and cleaner designs become.

Our boy Senator, Mark Begich, like his mentor former Governor Knowles can out-conservative most Republicans when they’re campaigning. Of course, notwithstanding the fact that everything the Democrat Party is about is antithetical to the interests of Alaska, he just votes in lockstep with the Caucus, though they’d probably give him a pass on a gun vote or an ANWR vote especially if he could recruit a Republican to vote with the Ds in his stead.

For example I’m not to sure I like using faces as the O in GOP. It’s kind of corny.
Also there is nothing to grab your attention when you click on it.
Maybe they could put news stories about Democrats on the front page to get people interested, you know…HuffPo style.
They need to format it more like a blog site where people can read opinions and stories from people they recognize.

For example I cannot tell what the GOP is up to today or what is an important event unless I search for it.
To much valuable front page space is wasted on useless information. The damn banner takes up a third of the page.

There doesn’t seem to be a sense of urgency or motivation to it.
It had the feel of a library. It was like clicking on to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. It needs pictures and headlines. Where is it’s blog roll? Are they linking to right-wing sites?
Where is the star power?
It’s two dimensional.
It’s one and a half dimensional…..yaaawwwnnnn.

Moe Lane Tuesday, October 13th at 10:50AM EDT (link)

* If you have layout issues, the GOP.com site is actively calling for people to help with that.

* If you don’t believe the GOP’s intentions, the GOP.com site is actively calling for people to join up, and thus help with that.

* Complaining about the GOP on RedState actually accomplishes nothing, explicitly including getting conservative Republicans elected next year.

* This new movie Zombieland has a tagline that I can’t repeat here. Look it up, embrace it, live it.

Sean Hackbarth Tuesday, October 13th at 11:06AM EDT (link)

GOP.com just launch, and like any major website is a work in progress. I had some log-in problems so I know there’s work to be done. I urge people to go there, sign up, and try it out. The only way the GOP’s tech people can fix the problems is getting valuable feedback.

And remember, this is simply a website relaunch. No website will fix any gripes you might have with the party.

Is the GOP EVER gonna get it right?

scottbomb Tuesday, October 13th at 1:38PM EDT (link)

I tried, Sean. I tried to log in but it didn’t recognize me. I tried to “sign up” and when I entered my email and zip code, nothing happened.

Several months ago, I tried using gop.com and could never log in. I couldn’t sign up then either. Nothing I tried worked. I came here (RS) asking for help and no one had an answer. Heck, I even wrote my (R) congressman about it and all I got was a lot of nothing.

Snce you mentioned it, why in the world would anyone release a BETA version to the public at large?? Does Microsoft release Windows when it’s in BETA? Good grief!

I’ve been wondering for a long time now if this is the work of leftists infiltrating the GOP. Like the people who ran McCain’s campaign….

You people are insatiable. Rather then sitting on your carcass complaining about how the GOP isn’t to your liking, why don’t you do something about it, huh ?

If you don’t like the website, then give them feedback. If you don’t like the party leadership, then get involved. Simply standing around and complaining like idiots isn’t going to accomplish your end means. That is pretty much why I didn’t like the tea parties to begin with. Because the people there vent their frustrations, and then they go home without doing anything about it. And the ones that do indeed get involved in politics are libertarians, third party people.

Whether you like it or not, the GOP is your only hope of stopping the democrats, so get up off your dainty behinds and get involved in the Republican Party.

Third Street Tuesday, October 13th at 5:38PM EDT (link)

This isn’t “Star Wars”, kid. In the real world, brand-new college grads aren’t referred to by their elders as “younglings”; they’re more commonly known as “people with no marketable real-world experience.”

When they have attitudes like yours they’re known, even more commonly, as “unemployable”.

I seriously hope you have another two or three years of college ahead of you. You could use the time to grow up a little more, and take a good hard look at how you’ll survive once you’re out of the incubator. ‘Cause you’ll have a hard time persuading someone to hire you for no other reason than “I’m the future!” even in the best of times.

Here to stay? I doubt that. -nt

The difference between you and me, Lelouch...

RedBeard Tuesday, October 13th at 1:41PM EDT (link)

…is that I realize just how stupid I was back when I was in college and just how little I knew when I thought I knew everything. It’s a lesson that takes some time and maturity to learn. That’s not patronizing; it’s being honest, and speaking from experience.

Meanwhile, before accusing others of being patronizing, go back and read your first post. Really read it. If you’re willing to be honest with yourself, you will see why it was so poorly received. If not, just continue your insults, your gross generalizations, your false conclusions, and see how far that routine gets you in the pursuit of making friends and influencing people.

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

I told you before, I

Lelouch Tuesday, October 13th at 5:11PM EDT (link)

have nothing to take back from that post. In fact I stand behind every single word. Patronize me all you want, it still doesn’t deny the fact that people are content to just sit around and complain rather then get off their butts and fix things.

And maturity and stupidity from college kids have nothing to do with this argument. Rather, both you and Achance took the opportunity to diss on us college kids, with content that was none to constructive.

The only ones who can kill, are those who are prepared to be killed.

Listen, punk! You came here with an insult,

Achance Tuesday, October 13th at 1:17PM EDT (link)

you can expect one back. Now when you’ve done something besides consume oxygen, perhaps you might be entitled to judge. I’ve actually found it pretty close to impossible to underestimate college students and recent college graduates. And you don’t show much promise so far as a future leader, conservative or otherwise.

It ain’t my fault that a has-been took it the wrong way. And we college kids are the future, whether you like it or not, so get out of our way. Perhaps do something constructive like educating us on how to properly do things rather then blow us off. Until then, get out of my way.

Attack your statement? Which one? First you accuse people on the site of sitting around doing nothing but bitching, when if you had any familiarity with the site you would have known that exactly the opposite is true. People on this site are active in politics, Tea Parties, the GOP on a daily basis.

Then a little later you say we are supposed to be training young people like yourself except you refuse to accept anyone’s suggestions or training.

Now we’re all biased (too bad racist doesn’t fit the categorization) against college students. Once again you haven’t spent any time reading the site, a good many of the posters here are college students, to include front pagers and moderators.

Take a knee, drink water and face out. Sorry, you don’t have enough life experience to recognize that phrase. Its a left over from when I was killing and willing to be killed. It means slow down, catch your breath and lets go again when everyone has had a chance to contemplate things a little. Map check, get it?

One other thing to consider, its old curmudgeons like the folks you have been yelling at all afternoon that hire smart a**ed little college kids after they graduate. You may not want to resemble the characters in “A Message to Garcia” so much when you’re interviewing.

“If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Lelouch, you really are something, and I don't think it is nice.

penguin2 Tuesday, October 13th at 6:02PM EDT (link)

All of your comments were insulting. Try:

“you people are insatiable” “sitting on a carcass complaining” “then go home without doing anything” “so back off, punk” “never make a good leader” “begone” “Mr. Strawman.

Wow! You really don’t know who you are talking to around here or what you are saying. Mr Achance has had a long and distinguished career and could make mincemeat of you.

Most of the people on this site have become active off site. And if you were really reading this site, you would know that. I didn’t attack you as a college student. My remarks to you are strictly related to your boorish behavior and bad manners. It is obvious to me you are a spoiled and whinny young man who is immature. And yes, I am qualified to make that remark. I have twin boys who just graduated from college, and are wonderful young men.

You miss the point entirely, it is not about your age, it is about your behavior here.

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God.
Benjamin Franklin

It was about my age, penguin.

Lelouch Tuesday, October 13th at 6:21PM EDT (link)

And I don’t care what kind of distinguished career he had. You “adults” created a mess in kicked down to us when you didn’t want to take responsibility, so now it will eventually be up to my generation to fix it.

However, I doubt we will. After all, we will probably kick it down the road to the next generation. We do learn from the best, don’t we ?

The only ones who can kill, are those who are prepared to be killed.

Your right about that Lelouch, it will be up to your generation...

penguin2 Tuesday, October 13th at 6:28PM EDT (link)

to fix it. The problem that “your” generation will have though, is a lack of skills and understanding of what it takes to be independent and motivated. If you are from our side, you will be angry at other people taking your hard earned money through government redistribution of wealth. And if you are from the other side, you will be wondering why all this Socialism/Communism has failed.

Regardless of which side you are from, you need to decide what you are going to do. The rest of us already have, despite your accusations to the contrary.

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God.

And the reason why

Lelouch Tuesday, October 13th at 6:36PM EDT (link)

we have a lack of skills is because your generation no longer believes in us, and since you don’t believe in us any longer, Why waste your time ?

Besides, I don’t need to wonder why Socialism failed. I never believed in Socialism, and I never will. I am a die-hard Capitalist. My sub-point here today is that it is useless to get involved unless your willing to pass you skills and knowledge to the next generation, which incidently, is us.

The only ones who can kill, are those who are prepared to be killed.

Lelouch, then you preaching to the choir here.

penguin2 Tuesday, October 13th at 6:43PM EDT (link)

The people on this site are active and quite involved. Moe and others repeat that call to action all the time because we have new readers every day. Think about it from that view. You are talking to people who are already quite involved. Anyone new to the site does not know all the opportunities, the how, the what or wherefore.

Yes, there are many ,(not all) of your peers that may not have the skills and knowledge. It is not our fault. Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have peers you see this way, then educate them. The rest will have to learn the hard way.

Resistance to tyrants is obedience to God.
Benjamin Franklin

I knew that,

One attempt

Hooah_Mac Tuesday, October 13th at 7:22PM EDT (link)

I will make one attempt to rationally engage you.

Most of the posters here are very active. For myself, I am a state GOP delegate, I have been to tea parties, I blog, I call and I donate.

That is just me, nearly all of the active posters here have similar albeit different experiences. Your first post on this thread came off as arrogant and insulting, because you didn’t take the time to understand your audience, and you didn’t take the time to craft your argument so it would be persuasive instead of derogatory.

If you seriously want to help fix this country (and as a means to that end - the GOP), you would be well served to step back from posting and just read this site. There are are disabled veterans, single mothers, college students, career government officials, current and former politicians and others from the entire spectrum of social and racial backgrounds who come here specifically because they are activists who work in the trenches…this is just another trench.

The fact that you are a college student isn’t held against you - the fact that you made wildly disparaging comments, and all you have for a resume is college student - that is what caused the issue.

As you have been asked, what are YOU doing to fix these problems? You can’t pin it on my generation, or any generation, because the problem has been growing full force for at least 80 years and the under 30 crowd became just as complicit with there participation in the election of President Obama. At times, progress has been made to slow it down, but leviathan feeds and feeds. I know what about a hundred people that post here are doing and have done, what are you doing?

He certainly did not have the good sense to disengage in time - or perhaps it was just plain immaturity in dealing with the world outside of his college peers. Same outcome in the end.

I don’t rate him as having been a moby as 1) in dealing with me in that, he did listen and respond to my comments in what seems a genuine fashion (and even respectful); and 2) he did exhibit a sense of humor (including self-deprecation) a few times in the thread - which is not something you find among the hard left.

But for whatever reason, he couldn’t stop digging when he found himself in a hole, and got his due punishment for such behavior.

All this Lelouch stuff is deja vu to me this week, unfortunately...

larueladue Tuesday, October 13th at 8:42PM EDT (link)

We had an “incident” with one of the younger generation in my local dog training club last week, that was eerily similar to the ratings of Lelouch… We “older” people rapidly tired of it, asked for his resignation, and got it. Problem solved, moving on…

I know that you cannot “fire” someone here, and that my little story is mostly irrelevant, but what prompted the comment was the eerily similar sorts of arguments and “conversation” by Lelouch and our guy: lack of ability to answer a single simple question, inability to articulate coherent arguments, inability to listen (read) and coherently respond to others comments and arguments, and just general immaturity in general. And the person in question was a late 20’s professional, with an advanced college degree. It was appalling (and entertaining I am sad to say) to see the “older” generation, some with barely any (high school) education, argue circles around this guy, and he never saw or understood… It made me think more than twice about how his generation will respond when it is their turn, while we were turning him out on his butt…

Hopefully, the “younglings” will live and learn….
