Obama, Emanuel Compete for Most Insensitive Remark

Aides to President Barack Obama acknowledged Tuesday White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel apologized to leaders of the special needs community after a recent screed involving the mentally disabled. At a White House meeting, Emanuel reportedly scolded a group of liberal strategists for attacking wayward Democrats over health care, dismissing the suggestion the White House alienate moderate Blue Dogs as “f–ing retarded.”

Sarah Palin, the mother of young child with Down Syndrome, sharply criticized Emanual’s remarks, writing on her platform of choice, Facebook: “Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities — and the people who love them — is unacceptable, and it’s heartbreaking.”

As a matter of “decency,” Palin said, President Obama must immediately fire Emanuel.

“Yes, Rahm is known for his caustic, crude reference about those with whom he disagrees, but his recent tirade against participants in a strategy session was such a strong slap in many American faces that our president is doing a disservice by seeming to condone Rahm’s recent sick and offensive tactic,” she wrote.

Obama did not–and, by all accounts has no intention to–fire Emanuel, but the second-most powerful man in Washington was forced to apologize.

Emanuel phoned Tim Shriver, who launched a campaign against the “r-word” as Chairman of the Special Olympics, to apologize for the nature of his comments, according to Politico.

Emanuel’s apology was accepted, but Shriver was not the offendee; those present at the strategy meeting–the Democrats he called “f–ing retarded”–and all those living with the reality of intellectual disabilities were.

We have long since exceeded our quota for apologia go-to guys. Still, Obama and Emanuel were intent nonetheless on creating yet another Democratic-sin absolving moral arbiter by offering a sham private apology to Shriver.

Unfortunately, Emanuel’s apology to Shriver was not the first he received from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

In March, 2009, Obama appeared on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” in which he compared his poor bowling performance–an object of great ridicule by his former primary opponent Hillary Clinton–to that of Special Olympians.

“It’s like — it was like Special Olympics, or something,” Obama said of his foray into the world of bowling.

Whatever critiques of Palin exist, it cannot be said the former GOP vice presidential nominee is not consistent, as she quickly decried the President’s comment as insensitive.

“I was shocked to learn of the comments made by President Obama about Special Olympics. This was a degrading remark about our world’s most precious and unique people,” she said, “coming from the most power position in the world. I hope President Obama’s comments do not reflect how he truly feels about the special needs community.”

By now, President Obama no doubt has Shriver on speed dial.

I can’t jump on board with this. Yeah, what Obama said was really stupid, especially for a guy who is allegedly the best speaker in our generation. And yeah, Rahm has a dirty mouth.

So what? We’ve been fighting a battle against political correctness for good reason for many years; why jump onto their side simply because we can use the same weapon to bludgeon the left? I think we’re better than that.

The word “retarded” is not a slur and yes, I know Rahm was using it as an insult in that case, but how many of us have said “that’s gay” as an insult but had no intention to rip on homosexuals? I’m sure we’ve all said it and I’m sure members of our caucus have said it to one another in the past and will do so in the future.

Retarded has entered the lexicon the same way “gay” has. I don’t think any politician or his aide should be throwing those terms around, but it is not and should not be a fireable offense, nor should our side engage in rhetoric that puts us on the side of political correctness. Rahm wasn’t talking about Trig, referring to Trig or even thinking of Trig when he said what he said. Freaking let it go.

Besides, he’s a great foil for the far left and we should want him to remain at his post as long as possible since he’s doing such a bang up job preserving the Dems majority…

Like I said, Rahm provides a fantastic foil for the far left. His position in the Obama administration ensures that the president does not listen, at least not too much, to the Netroots and encourages him to act against his own instinct which is to tack ever farther left. In my estimation, he’s basically the only thing that keeps Obama from fully embracing the Kossack vision.

There is a big difference between being politically correct and being an boorish elf afflicted with little man syndrome. Retarded always has been and always will be a slur. Anyone associated with the POTUS has no business using it. Period.

If anyone has, as Maureen Dowd once wrote, “absolute moral authority” to comment on this matter it is Sarah Palin. I would venture to guess that all those who have family or friends who are mentally challenged speak with one voice concerning this incident and the a**hole who was involved, and Sarah Palin has finally given them a voice.

Rahm needs to head back to the land of tights and Tchaikovsky.

This sort of behavior is too common – Obama, Rahm . . . and I remember VP Gore joking about an extra chromosome. It’s not that hard to be considerate but thugs and buffoons seem “challenged” in this area.

I don’t think Rahm particularly embraces such a worldview, but there’s no question in my mind that Obama has had at least some ancillary thoughts in that direction and that many of his supporters fully embrace not just a pro-choice but a pro-abortion mantra. One of the most blatant hypocrisies of the left is their trumpeting of diversity, the need to help the poor and minority groups and the absolute necessity of all peoples to be tolerated… while not so quietly embracing genocide of minorities and handicapped individuals through abortion.

But yes please, let’s just light the messenger on fire because of his profession despite the fact that even Dan has noted that I’ve presented pretty spot on analysis on the state of HCR and I’m well-vetted as really being one of the good guys. Bottom line

In The Hook (Diary) Tuesday, February 2nd at 4:23PM EDT (link)

I’ve been on this site for four years Neil. That’s a pretty long time for me to be some kind of bizarro lurker-troll, isn’t it? I’ve contributed to Dan’s HCR threads, I’ve Facebook friended and will be voting for Rubio in the primary and am looking to become a volunteer for Allen West in FL-16 since, unfortunately, no one is beating my “representative,” Alcee Hastings.

I worked for a conservative candidate in the Illinois senate race that eventually elected Obama and I headed up College Republicans at my undergrad on the north shore of Chicago. I don’t think I should even have to explain myself here since I’ve been a RedStater for nearly as long as you have, though admittedly not nearly as active.

So I hold a different view about Rahm and think he’s a good foil for the left. And I happen to think that pouncing on every word ever spoken by a notoriously hotheaded adviser doesn’t make a lot of sense, especially since there’s likely been similar things said by folks on our side. Honestly, what’s the problem with that?

As for the slur bit, I will say I’m honestly sorry for people who were upset because they have handicapped relatives. I don’t use the term “f-ing retarded” in my personal life (and please note I didn’t say it here either!) and I understand fully those that bristle at its usage since I have a son who, only by the grace of God, avoided a handicap as he has miraculously turned out fine despite being born nearly four months early.

That said, I won’t give an “I’m sorry if you were offended” apology on “defending Rahm” (since I’m not defending him at all) because that’s not an apology at all. It’s a page right out of the liberal playbook for holding whatever personal beliefs you want but as long as you shut up and vote the right way, you’re A-OK with us pal. I’ll stand on principle and hope you don’t ban me for something stupid like that. If you do, I won’t go and make a smurf account or anything like that. I’ll just go back to reading, thinking but not saying a word because I didn’t pass a purity test on something as inane as a comment made by one of the biggest jackasses in the Democratic fold.

I was saying we don’t want to go down that road. We’re not fascists and we don’t dispense incredible venom at the other side for being subhuman monsters. We simply disagree and play hardball.

I was making a slippery slope argument Neil – not a direct comparison to those, and this is a serious term that I truly mean, Nazis because that’s exactly what they are. I think Jonah Goldberg would agree.

I’m not going to say “sorry if you were offended” but I will say, and mean, sorry if you thought I was making a comparison as opposed to a slippery slope argument. It was never my intention to make a direct analogy and I thought the long winding comparison I wrote immediately after the comment title explained what I meant, but obviously it did not. Since there is so much invective spewed at Rahm over at sites like DKos and FDL, I just figured he might serve a good purpose. I mean, if they hate him so much, maybe we should think he inadvertently plays a helpful role.

After all, it was he who drafted all these “conservadems” (their word, not mine) that helped to slow Obamacare down somewhat by creating a slew of potholes and sticking points in the legislation. For that, I’ll be forever grateful.

I will admit that perhaps I read those sites too much and have become dull to the idea of what it means to be compared to a Kossack. Every third word is an f-bomb and I’ve seen so many calls to arrest Cheney or get Joe Lieberman’s wife fired or to wish that all of us “teabaggers” were wiped clean from the face of the earth like the scum we are that I’m getting pretty desensitized to it. I certainly understand Palin’s perspective on this and would guess that some in similar circumstances may find it offensive. But the political correctness angle is just completely overwrought.

I love you brother, and not that my opinion matters, but sometimes you need to call them as you see them- providing that debate without ridicule and witty, disguised ad hominems is still a modus operandi around here.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

If you thought we don’t, well, I don’t know how you got that impression since we’ve done it since the TCrown/Nick Danger days.

Respectfully, ridicule for editorial purposes is finger painting. Ridicule with the explicit purpose of exposing intellectually weak or fallacious argumentation is a Botticelli. No need for me to say which metaphor applies to our beloved Thomas.

As Lords, you can put folks on their personal Elba’s at will. Just remember history tells us that subjugation is a fleeting action employed by the intellectually weak.

Not me. Overly attentive, concerned and zealous perhaps, but definitely not jerky.

Bush was ridiculing him for his choices

Which he had full faculties to deliberate within his mind, before acting on. Ridiculing someone, who is impaired through no choice of his own, by using his condition as a pejorative, is low and cruel.

What if Bush did it?

That’s the question. Seriously, aside from Sarah Palin, who the hell cares that Obama said something isensitive. Well — WE should, for the same reason lefty journalists crow with glee whenever a Republican is caught in a gay prostitution scandal, or sexting congressional pages.

Obama is the frontman of a group that’s been singing the Political Correctness song for at least 2 decades. If he can’t live up to it, he ought to cram it. Since he won’t, we’ll stick his nose it in. It’s really that simple.

Faulty premise.

Vassar Bushmills (Diary) Tuesday, February 2nd at 4:46PM EDT (link)

“Gross hypocrisy” and “overwrought” should never be considered in the same tense.

Besides, President Bush’s comment was not politically incorrect. Calling a felon a felon is not politically incorrect as currently defined. Nor an a-hole.

Your faulty premise indicates a hidden finesse, since as Mr Stevens says, you’re new, and I think he’s a keeper of the gate.

Actually, I’m newer, my first comment here, of free will.

A different take on the whole Emanuel episode

freeamerican (Diary) Tuesday, February 2nd at 4:48PM EDT (link)

I actually look at this whole episode from a different perspective, and that is from the perspective of what I will call ‘tolerated vileness’, if you will. Let’s put the ‘retarded’ issue aside for a moment. Does it not strike many of you as totally offensive that – as far as we know – foul-mouthed Rahm Emanuel speaks this way all the time about whoever is his current target of opportunity? It is only when he attacks an out-of-bounds group o person that it even rises to the level of being ‘news.’

It’s not that we haven’t had foul-mouthed Presidents or Chiefs of Staff before, but they did it behind very closed doors – usually. It is, rather, that, in some perverse way, Obama actually revels in Emanuel’s vileness and crudity, this tagging of his ‘enemies’ or any obstacles with the foul epithet of the day – unless it becomes public, of course (when he then needs to respond). I believe he feeds on it; it is one of the things that helps drive his anger, his self-righteousness, and thus, this is an indicator of something far deeper and troubling than might appear at first blush.

I refer you back to Obama’s pathetic stab at humor at the May 2009 Washington Correspondents Dinner when he said, concerning Emanuel and Mother’s Day: “This is a tough holiday for Rahm Emanuel because he’s not used to saying the word ‘day’ after ‘mother.’”

What kind of real leader who cared at all about character or the impact of his words would make such a joke about the profanity of his Chief of Staff? And, of course, there was a lot of laughter in the room because they knew how closely Obama had hit the mark.

So, there you have it – Obama is basically saying: ‘I have a guy around me who is really profane all the time. It doesn’t bother me at all because I need/want a Chief of Staff like that next to me, a street-fighter with a sort of thuggish view of everyone and everything that’s standing in our way. In fact, it doesn’t matter to me how crude he is if he gets the job done.’

That’s our President’s mentality, and that is a view of the world – and of his fellow citizens – that is *truly* mentally challenged.

You think Comrade Obama talks the same way?

The idea of either and both of those uptight prigs conducting a conversation full of undeleted expletives is pretty funny to me. They may both be/have been experts in the use of foul language, but it still has something of the air of 12-year-olds smoking cigarettes behind the barn.

Being the parent of a clinically diagnosed severe MR, I gotta say your understanding of the English language is woefully lacking, Just because some uneducated use the term as a slur does not mean it should make it into our vocabulary of frequent negative identifiers. What bothered me most about your intitial post was…
” I’m sure we’ve all said it and I’m sure members of our caucus have said it to one another in the past and will do so in the future.”
If you have already predicted you will use the term in the future that’s a sad comment on you and your caucus. As to Palin, I believe she may have overused Trig a bit much during the campaign, however I admire her, her political beliefs and am a supporter. (Her running mate, not so much) She was right to call out the principles in the administration on their language.
You should sleep well tonight knowing in the future when you use the term again, as you have foreseen, many of those who are MR will not be offended. In fact many don’t comprehend derrogatory terms. You might on the other hand offend their parents, teachers, siblings, grandparents, bosses, volunteers, classmates, parishoners and health workers who come in contact with these individuals.

Thanks for writing this

hickorystick (Diary) Tuesday, February 2nd at 6:16PM EDT (link)

When the blood stops clouding my eyes, I am going to write a diary on this, to educate those that think this is nothing more than a political “occurrence” that should be used for a political bludgeon. Government and it’s political structure is a mechanism built and designed to enable change to improve the human condition, and protect it’s dignity and individuality. That ” ” Emanuel and colleagues think of any innocent individual or group with contempt shows that they are not fit to serve this Great Republic.

This insensitivity towards the disabled stems from the libs pro-abortion stance. If an unborn baby is an inconvenience to them, how much worse is a disabled child? Bambi & Rhambo’s ( Bambo?) dismissive comments expose their contempt for people who do not meet their standards.
