Failure to Communicate Threatens Giannoulias Campaign

Updated below the fold with video

Illinois State Treasurer and Democratic Senate hopeful Alexi Giannoulias appears to be sending mixed signals, both to the press and senior campaign aides, about his blossoming banking scandals, in which he approved as the senior loan officer of his family’s bank million dollar loans to two of Chicago’s most notorious crime figures.

A report by the Chicago Tribune revealed in April Giannoulias had authorized a series of loans, totaling roughly $20 million, to two convicted felons preparing to serve time in federal prison. The Giannoulias campaign weathered its first loan-related controversy in the Democratic primary when it was reported the Giannoulias family bank awarded sizable loans to prominent Chicago real estate developer and political bundler Tony Rezko, who in 2008 was found guilty on 16 counts of corruption.

Giannoulias had always declined to publicly provide details of the loan arrangement with Michael “Jaws” Giorango and Demitri Stavropolous, admitting only that he traveled to Miami to inspect property the bank had financed for the dubious duo.

But on the nuances of Giannoulias’ loan operations, shady as they may be, campaign talkers are either dated or factually wrong, as campaign spokeswoman Kathleen Strand insists her boss had “no role with these two individuals” when by his own admission he has.

As a professional spox, Strand does both herself and her candidate a disservice by straying from the campaign’s approved message. But yet she’s just so good at it.

Giannoulias Sunday crashed a fundraiser for school building projects in Central Asia, where he delivered a decidedly political speech, riling many of the attendees who came expecting an academic discussion on the state of education in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Daily Herald columnist Chuck Goudie, who was in attendance at the fundraiser, reports those gathered were “stunned” at Giannoulias’ “largely unforgettable” speech–which Strand no doubt had a hand in crafting.

“Organizers of the event said that Giannoulias had been told politicians were not welcome to make speeches,” Goudie wrote. “It wasn’t that type of event.”

And yet Giannoulias, with Strand in tow, crashed the event like a pair of fourteen-year-old boys at a girls-only slumber party. Strand explained the apparent mix-up as a “failure to communicate” to Goudie.

For Republicans, the Giannoulias campaign’s sustained “failure to communicate”–on a bevy of issues, from career-killing loans to mobsters to mundane stories like crashing a non-political fundraiser–means a weakened, off-message opponent this Fall. For Strand and Giannoulias, the non-communicating pair will soon be looking for new jobs.

UPDATE: A friend sends word a new spoof of Barenaked Ladies’ “If I Had A Million Dollars” is circulating among Illinois Republicans.

“If I had 20 million dollars, well, I’d give you a loan,” the song goes. “You and your shady friend with those $20 million dollars from my friendly family bank.”

We can keep on applying pressure but if these Dems pull a Torricelli and put someone else I am not sure we can gain this seat

It is also unfair if they go that move and they should force the dems to pay for primary and all ads and stuff for Kirk campaign

    • acat

There are a number of Dem candidates who could defeat Kirk, but the voters rejected them (or they self-selected out… ) leaving the Dems with Giannoulias…

What the Illinois RINOs and Repubs need to hope for is that, unlike the Dem Lieutenant Governor candidate, Giannoulias decides to stick around the race to the finish.

The RINO candidate Mark Kirk isn’t great, but he’d be better than anyone on the Dem side for the State, and the country as a whole… but right now (assuming Kirk has a brain) he’d better be doing oppo research on a whole spectrum of potential replacement candidates…

vote for the donk…at least we’s know what we’d get.

Never a good thing. If you can’t process that simple truth you really need to spend more time playing video games and less time here.

Next time you have such advice to share, please don’t.

Conservative in the primary, Republican in the general.

Those who advocate voting for Democrats rarely survive long here. Probably not a good idea to voice that particular opinion again.

        • acat

Seriously. President McCain (oh wait…) and House Speaker Pence (umm …) called and wanted to let you know that you’re an…….

[pardon us, cat got offensive at this point and has been put in the basement for the afternoon]

No matter what they do with Giannoulias on the ballot Illinois Dems find themselves between Scylla and Charybdis. If he remains on the ballot Giannoulias becomes a marquee illuminating the entire slate with the glow of corruption, reminding voters of Blagojovich’s tenure as governor.

If they replace Giannoulias after having to replace their scandal-ridden candidate for lt. governor, they appear conspicuously incompetent, looking like the Keystone Kops to the electorate. Political incompetence on top of scandal, corruption and a huge state debt would place Illinois Dems, bleeding heavily, in shark-infested waters this November.

…because they’ve already had to toss *one* guy from the ticket for steroid use, threatening to knife a girlfriend, and being a deadbeat dad. You can get away with one: accidents do happen. But two starts to look like a trend.

        • acat

All {effed} Up, as the acronym goes.

Yeah, having to toss the Lieutenant Governor / pawnshop owner / real estate “investor” candidate doesn’t help the decision.

Ironically, this reminds me somewhat of the Jim Ryan senate campaign a few years back where Ryan was favored, but withdrew late in the game* and the other guy won. Some nobody from the statehouse, funny name – Obama.

          * Keep in mind, the only thing the Dems ever had on Ryan is that he wanted to have sex with his wife Jerri Ryan in a somewhat sleazy setting. Insert Star Trek: Voyager reference here….

The Tribune’s John Kass speculates on Claypool as a possible replacement and notes the Blagojevich trial starts in June. That will also hurt the Dems in the state elections.

PPP just released 2 polls and shows Republican leading in both races

Sadly, I think voters will forget about changing of the names ( it worked in New Jersey to be honest) and Republicans sadly did it in Illinois last cycle when Republican who won primary to challenge Halverson dropped out and they had to chose new guy

I think its rotten if they do it and would sadly help them

I would presume the tossup status is because the candidacy of Alexi is still so unsettled? ? ?

Rasmussen new poll also has Brady(R) still leading for gov. over Quinn(D incumbent).

The Blago trial will not likely be continued(meaning delayed) so it will start in June. The Judge has just denied all motions of the defense in re The Tapes, My sense (amateur IAMNAL) is that the judge is aware of the massive 24/7 PR campaign on Blago’s part and wants to proceed expeditiously and no nonsense from defense.

in Illinois. A Republican must win the real votes by 50–40 just to tie.
