It’s not about promoting a “political message,” it’s about censoring a political message that’s not his own: liberty. The Gadsden flag was first used in South Carolina, and was a state treasure before it was a national one. It’s hypocritical of him not to represent the heritage of his constituents by demanding the removal of the Gadsden flag. It’s not the stars & bars (although Southerners can get those too in some states), its not a swastika, and it’s not a hammer and a sickle. What’s so controversial about “Don’t Tread On Me?”

They seem to be more worried about that than the many different license plates you can get in SC.

I think it would be great if SC could get the phrase “Don’t tread on me” on the license plate. Col. Gadsden was from SC and it would be a great way of celebrating the State’s heritage. In NH we have “Live free or die” on our license plates. The phrase was coined by Revolutionary war hero Gen John Stark. The liberals hate the “Live free or die” on their license plates. One doofus ended up in court trying to defend his right to cover up the phrase with tape.
