Commerce Secretary Gregg

According to CNN (hat tip to Katherine Jean Lopez at The Corner) http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/02/02/judd.gregg.commerce/index.html Senator Gregg has accecpted the offer to become Commerce Secretary.  I hope this isn’t true.  But if is it, it is outrageous and a great disservice to the country if we get a Democrat Senator or a liberal Republican who won’t support filibustering bad legislation.

I don’t blame President Obama for offering the position but I can’t believe Senator Gregg even considered it.  Governor Gilmore selected several Democrats from the state Senate when he was first elected Governor in 1997.  When Republicans won special elections, they finally took over the state Senate.   I always thought the Democrats who accepted the appointments sold their party out but thought it was a brilliant move by Governor Gilmore.   If this is true, I fear Senator Gregg just gave away any ability we had to filibuster the worst legislation the Democrats try to pass.

I had been meaning to write a post about “price gouging” but hadn’t gotten around to it yet. Then last night I received an e-mail from Delegate Tom Rust so-called Republican in the Virginia House of Delegates bragging about a law he helped pass to ban “price gouging”.

I have philosophical and practical problems with banning “price gouging” both in concept and with this specific legislation. Without both a willing buyer and seller there can be no sale. Therefore there can be no price gouging in a free market. Of course, I have yet to hear anyone complain about “price gouging” when somebody has to sell something for 10 cents on the dollar.
