Nitt Picking Newt

The big lie going on during the last couple of days is the idea that Newt Gingrich is just as progressive as Mitt Romney. From Glenn Beck to Ace of Spades to commenters here. Pure garbage.

First let me admit that I am leaning Newt mainly because I am a anybody but Romney guy. If Rick Perry or Rick Santorum could somehow become relevant by the time my Florida primary comes around I will probably switch to them. However, if it becomes a Newt vs Mitt vote my decision will be easy. I will vote for the conservative, Newt Gingrich.

Let me admit Newt has many flaws. From his personal life baggage, to his ego, to his unpopularity from the past, to even some of the issues he has pushed. There are some things people can and should bring up to complain about Newt. This is all fair game and true.

However, when people even remotely insinuate that there is no difference between Newt and Mitt on the conservative-progressive spectrum, they are either lying or are stupid.

During the 90′s, Mitt would have been rated at or near the bottom of conservatism in the Republican party. And Newt would have been at or near the extreme right of that scale. Newt was the face of the conservative movement in elected office along with probably Jessie Helms. Newt had a 90+ ACU rating in his 20 year career. He helped come up with the conservative Contract with America. At the other end was Mitt Romney who was against the Contract with America and who stated “I’m not trying to return to Reagan-Bush.” even though 60% of America voted for Reagan-Bush.

Then when push came to shove and it was time to actually govern, Newt had Welfare Reform, budgets balanced, and governments shut down. And Mitt had Romneycare. You say that was the past. I would simply ask who has sounded more conservative between the two  during the debates? For me it has been Newt Gingrich.

Finally we get to my main point. People are bringing up about a dozen issues to point at Newt being a progressive. This is largely cherry picking certain votes, comments, and issues. He has probably pushed 1000 issues, voted on 5,000, and commented on 10,000. Who wouldn’t have some bad moves? When you have been a Speaker of the House of course you have compromised on occasion. You are bound to have a liberal-progressive vote or two in 20 years in congress. When you have written 23 books, worked with numerous groups to push ideas and been a talking head on Fox News for nearly a decade, of course you will go too far to the left once or twice or even ten times.

In comparison, other then be a Governor for 4 years and done a few interviews and the debates, Mitt Romney hides. There isn’t anywhere near the record to nit pick Mitt.

My simple question that I have yet to hear an answer for is what has Mitt ever accomplished that was truly conservative in his entire life? I have asked this at numerous sites. Have not seen a good answer yet.  What has he even spent a dime of political capital on to try and accomplish that was conservative? When did he EVER fight for conservatism? Is he even truly doing that today? Give me even one example? When has the media ever gone after Mitt for doing something conservative?

Newt is a very conservative Republican who has lately on rare occasion dabbled in the dark side. I think in some cases to make money. In some cases to get in a little better with the establishment. However, Mitt is in bed with the establishment and has consummated that relationship with a child to show for it[Romneycare].

The media has never gone after Mitt Romney because Mitt is a liberal-progressive saying what people want to hear right now. Mitt will NEVER fight for conservatism. Newt has many times, including in the last debate even[Palestine]. I am still waiting for Mitt to do it once in his life.

I confess to being a Perry guy as well. However, that is my heart pick while Newt is my HEAD pick. We can’t afford to choose a candidate who stumbles over sentences as frequently as Perry does. We’re not running against Al Gore or John Kerry this time. We’re running against someone with a political machine and media love the likes of which we haven’t seen since Clinton.

I think a Gingrich/Perry ticket would sweep the South and Midwest battleground states in a snap…and Gingrich on stage tearing Obama to shreds is a thought to behold. At this point, this looks to be our winning ticket.

  • thelastconservative

Polls show Gingrich trailing Obama in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and all other key states.

Romney could beat Obama in these states. But you guys would rather hate Romney than win.

Fine. It’s your party now. Good luck.

  • APA Guy

…the moment he is the presumptive nominee.

Oh, and as for those “polls”, other polls show Obama at somewhere between 40-44% JAR in most battleground states. Tell me which of the following Obama 2008 states Obama beats Gingrich in and why/how given that he is below 50% in those states:

IN, VA, NC, OH, FL, IA, PA, NH

Is it the fact that unemployment is higher than when he took office? Is it the tripling of the deficit?

Wait..I know..it’s Obamacare, which nearly every state but the die-hard lib-friendly areas HATES.

You over-estimate Obama’s popularity in swing states…in fact, according to a new Gallup/USA Today poll, Gingrich beats Obama by 3 pts (more when you consider that undecideds RUN to the opposition candidate in presidential elections) in battleground states:

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/12/13/swing-state-poll-shows-obamas-narrow-options/

Now, tell us again how Gingrich can’t beat Obama…

  • Common_Cents

President Barack Obama is in big trouble, with both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich leading him in a dozen key swing states, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney leads Obama among registered voters, 48 percent to 43 percent, in the 12 states the survey covers. And former House Speaker Gingrich leads the president, 48 percent to 45 percent. Nationwide, Obama leads Gingrich, 50 percent to 44 percent, and Romney, 47 percent to 46 percent, according to the poll.

The 12 states are Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Obama won all of them in 2008. Each could go either way next year, and Obama needs to win half of their electoral votes to gain a second term, according to USA Today.

The portion of voters in those states who identify themselves as Democratic or Democratic-leaning has dropped 4 percentage points since 2008, while the portion of Republicans has risen 5 points.

    Loving this article. Highly recommended.

It isn’t nitpicking Newt. He sat on the bench with Nancy Pelosi and spewed Global warming nonsense. It isn’t spinning his record to address his obvious history with gov’t healthcare. And it isn’t fabricated that he – not long ago – was praising Andy Stern. Nor is it irrational for a lot of conservatives to be very troubled about his disastrous personal life.

It’s wishful thinking to pretend the guy is one of us. He’s the very definition of a big-government bureaucrat . That he isn’t as pro-gov’t as Romney is only of minor consequence to me. Neither is fit to be president.

  • keven

Sure seems like nit picking. I didn’t say there were not issues against Newt Gingrich. There are issues with every candidate though. My point was that Newt has been the most active speaker on the issues in the last 20 years of any politician in the country and of course someone who has been that active will say or do something people will disagree with.

When people are Governors and hide from the media, which both Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have done, there is a lot less record to nit pick. Do you disagree with this point? Its one reason we haven’t had too many Senators as President. They end up with tons of stands on issues.

    …there’s no doubt about that.

I’m a Perry supporter over Newt for several reasons: (1) Character, (2) Executive experience, (3) Successful record, (4) More consistent conservative, (5) Washington outsider, (6) Less baggage, (7) Starker contrast with Obama. I believe Perry, not Gingrich, would be the best head-to-head matchup against Obama in the general election.

That being said, I won’t cut off my nose to spite my face. If Perry sinks and it’s a Newt-Romney or Newt-Romney-Paul race, I’ll throw my full support behind Gingrich without a second thought. But *my* state doesn’t vote until the end of primary season so I have lots of time to observe how the race plays out before having to make my final decision. In the meantime, I will continue to actively support Gov. Perry, who is absolutely our best candidate. I am not buying into any media narrative – even the “conservative” media narrative – that Perry can’t win, Perry is toast or that Newt (or the shrill Bachmann, angry Santorum or patronizing Huntsman is a better, or more electable candidate. Nor am I buying the garbage that Ron Paul is any kind of conservative or that Iowans are actually likely to elect a man who openly cheers on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Rick Perry has my heart….and my head. And if conservatives want a consistent conservative of conviction and character, not a conservative Washington insider, whose intellect and creativity are no excuse for a lack of wisdom and humility, then those on the front line – in Iowa, South Carolina, Florida, etc. – need to go with their gut and not listen to the press and the punditry.

May God give each of us the wisdom to choose the best man for the job and the courage to support and vote for him.

Newt is not a conservative. He is a big government guy pure and simple. Look at his actions and not just his words.

Remember Dede Scozzafava? Remember how Newt chose to pick her over a more conservative Republican candidate because she was ‘electable’?

Newt is a Statist – he is someone who looks to government first because that is pretty much all he has ever known. Remember the recent flap over Newt’s comments about poor children not having an example of someone with a work ethic and how we should give them jobs as janitors, etc to help them develop one? The first thing that jumped out at me about that was that he meant that the GOVERNMENT should give them jobs! Another government program! More money we don’t have! More money stolen from the productive sector for the parasitic sector…

His first instinct is to turn to government! Why didn’t he just say lets drastically cut the size and scope of the federal government so that the private sector can take off, which will increase the number of jobs so that those poor kids can then get a job and develop their own work ethic? If someone must hold their hand so that they can learn how to hold down a job then all responsibility should lie at the state and local level – none at the fed. That way perhaps someone will notice when the beauracratic parasites siphon off most of the money for themselves, their relatives, their friends, etc.

Personally, I can’t understand why any conservative would even believe in a fairy tail such as this in which a government program teaches someone a work ethic. Human nature shows that you only value things you aquire through work and sacrifice and a ‘work ethic’ is no different. Principles matter. Philosophy matters. If the underlying principles are not really conservative, prepare for disappointment.

I looked at your 7 reasons for supporting Perry vs Gingrich and I disagree with none of them. They were good reasons too. I respect your choice and suggest you keep supporting Rick Perry.

My only concern is the ABR vote is pretty evenly divided and if it remains that way 2 months from now Mitt Romney could thread the needle. But I don’t think its that much of a concern yet. But come South Carolina-Florida I think we need to coalesce around one person. If Perry can get above 20% by then I will probably jump on board the Texas Bandwagon. If not I hope you and others move toward Newt.

  • keven

I remember Scozzafava. And it ticked me off. However, Newt has said he was wrong about that. Other strong conservatives supported Mike Castle aswell. Should we rule them out for elected office for that decision?

As for Newt wanting government programs to help the needy, there isn’t a candidate in this race that hasn’t supported numerous programs like the one Newt proposed with the possible exception of Ron Paul. Not sure about him. But definately Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry have. Obvious examples being the money Bachmann took from the government for her and her husbands buisness and Perry’s illegal alien tuition thingy. I am sure if I researched it I could find numerous others. He who is without big government sin cast the first stone.
