GOP Senators undermine energy focus

Maybe we are the stupid party

Believe it or not, I am frequently the one arguing in favor of compromise and coalition building in order to get things done. But a modicum of party discipline and common sense has to be involved or strategic compromise becomes surrender.

It seems a few GOP Senators can’t see the difference. Kimberley A. Strassel brings us the ugly truth:

Politics has its puzzling moments. John McCain and most of the GOP experienced one late last week. That was when five of their own set about dismantling the best issue Republicans have in the upcoming election.

That’s right. Just as the GOP finds an issue it can run on and build some excitement a group of wisemen step up to torpedo the whole thing:

And so, last Friday, in stumbled Sens. Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Corker and Johnny Isakson — alongside five Senate Democrats. This “Gang of 10″ announced a “sweeping” and “bipartisan” energy plan to break Washington’s energy “stalemate.” What they did was throw every vulnerable Democrat, and Mr. Obama, a life preserver.

That’s because the plan is a Democratic giveaway. New production on offshore federal lands is left to state legislatures, and then in only four coastal states. The regulatory hurdles are huge. And the bill bars drilling within 50 miles of the coast — putting off limits some of the most productive areas. Alaska’s oil-rich Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is still a no-go.

The highlight is instead $84 billion in tax credits, subsidies and federal handouts for alternative fuels and renewables. The Gang of 10 intends to pay for all this in part by raising taxes on . . . oil companies! The Sierra Club couldn’t have penned it better. And so the Republican Five has potentially given antidrilling Democrats the political cover they need to neutralize energy through November.

Nice work Senators. I hope you enjoy being in the minority. Because if you prefer this kind of symbolic grandstanding while undermining your party in return for zero actual policy gains then that’s what you can expect.

There are just some situations that require you to step up and grab the opportunity to highlight the stark differences between you and your opponents. This was the time for Republicans to prove that they really believed what they said about increased domestic energy and an all of the above energy policy. This was a chance for elected officials to prove to their supporters that they wouldn’t weasel out of yet another chance to take a stand.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, John Thune, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Corker and Johnny Isakson you failed. While leadership was trying to actually succeed you kicked them in the junk. I hope you feel good about that when you look your colleagues in the eye.

This is why Democrats never lose even when Republicans win. Lindsey and company are always there to cut the legs out from under any Conservative progress! The only thing keeping this from being the gang of 14 all over again as that one of their club is the Republican nominee and the other three are probably up for re-election this year!

Take an issue that cuts 75% against the Dummycrat Party and little Lord Fauntleroy,(as I’ve heard Graham called), sabotages Republican efforts and bails them out to prove how magnanimous he can be! Way to freaking go AXXHOLE!!!

From what I have read we don’t have a chance to primary these guys until for another couple of years. How much damage will they do to the country and the party in the mean time? It’s time to start enforcing the party line. The dems already accuse us of being in lockstep and that won’t change, so we might as well crack the whip on these guys.

but since Kevin is a Contributor, it isn’t possible. I had to find it in the “member diaries” list. It should be on the front page in the “recommended diaries” list.

These five linguini-spined Senators have again compromised where no compromise was necessary. We have the ‘Crats by the balls on the topic of drilling–there is no need to loosen our grip.

Saxby Chambliss replied to the firestorm on Rush this morning. He tried to tell us day is night and the proposal doesn’t actually do what it clearly does. I hate to say it, but there’s a reason Southerners sound dumb. Some of them are–and Saxby is stuck on stupid in this instance. If there really is a good reason for this compromise, he talked for 5 minutes or more and never explained to me (or Rush) what it is.

My interpretation of his comments: Barbra Streisand.

I don’t know what these 5 ‘Pubs and 5 ‘Crats think they can do for the energy situation, but they’ve thrown a monkey wrench into the best issue we have to separate us from the pinko commie Libs. Even if it comes to nothing, the ‘Crats can now say, “We tried to compromise with you, but the right-wing hard-liners wouldn’t meet us halfway.”

I am sick of them–these twitterpated Senators make McCain look like a genius, and Obama has to be laughing into his pancakes.

John McCain will make greening the federal government a priority of his administration. The federal government is the largest electricity consumer on earth and occupies 3.3 billion square feet of space worldwide. It provides an enormous opportunity to lead by example. By applying a higher efficiency standard to new buildings leased or purchased and retrofitting existing buildings, we can save taxpayers money in energy costs, and move the construction market in the direction of green technology.

then they are not progressives. They more clearly fall into the radical category. True progressives were for changes that put more of the reins of government into the peoples hands at all times. These guys are for full statist control over most parts of peoples lives in order to ensure “a more just outcome”. Hence, radicals.

Leaving the Incredible Shrinking Five aside for a moment,

Flagstaff (Diary) Friday, August 8th at 5:12PM EDT (link)

The $84 billion windfall for “alternative and renewable fuels” is a great example of why Government should not be setting economic policy, which is what this is.

There should be NO subsidy for ANY industry (unless it’s on the brink of collapse and it’s a national security issue), because that creates an artificial imbalance in the price structure that more accurately directs where investment dollars should flow.

Right now, the sensible fuels are OIL and COAL and GAS and NUCLEAR and HYDRO, because we already know how to use them with current technology to produce all the energy we need. They are also by far the most cost-effective fuels to be found.

If Government tells these industries, “No, you can’t drill or build, but instead we’ll pay you your own money to invest in pie-in-the-sky, whether you believe it will work or not,” the result will be wasted money, not a faster transition to windmills and solar panels. Since there is an element of national security in this issue, it does make sense for the Government to promote independent research into the matter–it just doesn’t make sense to charge it all to the oil companies. And it doesn’t make sense to think that the Government has any idea as to just what “alternative fuel” might eventually become viable–it shouldn’t favor one or two kinds over another. After all, “shale oil” is just as much an alternative right now as is solar, and nuclear is a heck of a lot more practical and readily available per kilowatt-hour than is wind power.

In a way, McCain has the right idea, if he proposes a prize to the first “person” to develop a practical alternative to foreign oil as our primary fuel. But to take money away (to the tune of $84 billion) from the people who are providing us with usable energy today in order to create “alternative energy” is what is known in the skepticism trade as “magical thinking”–because you wish it to be so, it must be so.

It makes no sense to transition to a non-economical fuel (ethanol, etc.) when there is a more economical one available (oil) with plentiful supply. As oil becomes less available, and thus more expensive, then alternatives will make sense. But Social Security will be solvent before oil is truly scarce, unless we make it scarce by restricting ourselves from our own raw materials.

Astounding

Mike Friesen (Diary) Saturday, August 9th at 1:47AM EDT (link)

I think this falls under self-inflicted wounds. I am speechless as to why these 5 would work so hard to destroy the one key issue they have going into the November elections. Talk about out of touch. The American people don’t want busy work out of Washington, they want real, common sense answers. I guess the idea of Congress and common sense in the same sentence is an oxymoron thought. Wow.

Best regards,
Michael

Haven't these 5 stoogies heard about the so-called "Republicans for Convenience"?

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Saturday, August 9th at 2:46AM EDT (link)

What else do we need to do in order for our conservative and republican leaders realize that:

  1. Standing by the conservative and republican principles is the most important thing in US politics.

  2. Compromising the basic principles is a sure path to disaster.

  3. Being a lukewarm conservative and the lack of fighting spirit to stand by our main principles was the main reason of 2006 victory of the Democrats and the defeat of some conservative candidates early this year.

These senators need to know that they will not see the light of the new day unless they do their share of burden:

Fight a good fight. No one wins by just giving in to your opponents. Concession of principles is the main recipe of failure.

This is a sad day for republicans and conservatives.

In short,

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Saturday, August 9th at 4:10AM EDT (link)

A democrat-led energy bill cannot be trusted. Let the GOPers do their own version of the Bill and present them to the people for better inputs. Sometimes the Governed are much more “informed” than the GOP legislators themselves.

As skicougar points out in his diary, the concession that the 5 GOPers have gotten from the dems are:

  1. 4-5 Sites only and No ANWR.
  2. 50 mile restriction.
  3. No control against the ACLU and other militant environmentalists.

These will only be sufficient if we are only targeting One (1) Barrel of Oil per Annum in next 20 years. And that cannot even supply the growing oil appetite of the Senators (and Pelosi)for their SUVs.

Meaning… such bill is not the legislative measure that we are looking forward to support our campaign towards a comlete oil independence. Thus, I will continue to shout …

DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!.

In addition,

Punish the 5 Republicans for Convenience.

I will only retract my last statement if these 5 GOPers convince us that they will move away from such foolish legislative agenda. For their retribution, maybe they should consult the revolting GOP House members to help formulate a more potent remedial energy plan for America in behalf of the people, and not in behalf of their colleagues in the other party.

Communists coopted the term progressives in the 30s I think...

AceInTX (Diary) Saturday, August 9th at 6:17PM EDT (link)

when you here the word progressive used to describe someone…think communist as opposed to liberal describing socialists. Both describe statists…the only issue is who owns property and who cpntrols the wealth generated in the society!

Institute for Energy Research Draws Their Conclusions

http://www.instituteforenergyresearch.org/2008/08/06/better-off-doing-nothing/

Giving a nod to increased domestic energy production is a welcome development. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing new in the “Gang of Ten” plan to deliver a new era of energy policy. In fact, it represents more of the same government-centered ‘solutions’ that helped deliver the present energy crises in the first place. Taxing efficient producers to the tune of $84 billion to funnel the revenue into less efficient, but politically-expedient alternatives is a failed approach. If
the government wants to help average Americans, it can open ANWR and the outer continental shelf to energy production, and facilitate the leasing of over 2 trillion barrels in oil shale on U.S. lands.[viii] Other than that, politicians should just get out of the way and let free markets do their
job. A New Era for domestic energy will begin on October 1, when the bans imposed by Congress expire and offshore drilling and oil shale production become legal again. The “Gang of Ten” would
better serve the needs of American families by renouncing their recent plan and simply step aside.

is dead right. Government should just get out of the way.

Meanwhile, the Gang of Ten should get out of the way, too. Let what’s happening in the House continue. It’s drawing attention to exactly who are causing the problems and which party is offering solutions. Americans will understand. Now, they will be getting a confusing message.

I can’t believe those 5 Republicans would be more interested in grandstanding than helping us in this election. It’s mind numbing.

Oh yes. That would be the Senate cafeteria, which lost millions under government management and is now being outsourced. As someone who works for a government contractor, I’ve seen so much waste that would never be tolerated in private enterprise. CYA is taken to extremes.
