helped frame the entire debate. Other than Ryan, I thought he was the most important Republican. It is difficult to impossible for Dems to classify Alexander as an extremist…especially once he talks. It immediately showed that Republicans would not be bowled over.

Not to mention..he was right about increase in cost of premiums.

Obama looked like the rookie he is on that one…beginning to end!

  • Viet71

    But get the idea.

Obama is the sort of guy I understand in spades.

A smart guy, a really good speaker, who is corrupt.

As a lawyer, I see this sort of guy all the time.

    • http://seekingliberty.wordpress.com fmaidment

I actually don’t know about that.

After all, you’d have to be foolish to believe that these Big Government schemes would actually be positive for the economy and lead to greater choice.

      Unless, of course… He’s LYING.

  • AZlurker

wow, great, he stood up to the biggest liar in all of washington. im tired of seeing these republicans talk the talk but not walk the walk. i dont think they deserve any of our votes and they sure as hell are not getting mine. TEA PARTY

    • janis

I doubt you are voting for anything even faintly resembling a conservative whether they are are labeled Republican or otherwise. You know how I know that? Because you don’t punctuate, you don’t capitalize and you don’t add a single thing worth hearing to the conversation here.

Libs are pretty easy to spot.

      • eburke

I didn’t get further than the 3 posts (all today) in 16 months.

But then again, mom always said you were smarter than I.

And you might as well just leave, because we don’t need third party morons here.

If you’re so sick of Republicans then you won’t like it here anymore either.

over 40,000 people without health insurance die each year-how many people with health insurance die each year? I kept watching the summit waiting for Barack’s head to explode since he was so steamed!!!

    • eburke

from a lack of health insurance coverage, why does the libtard Dem program not kick in for 3 years? Does this mean they are complicit in the deaths of 120,000 Americans?

The second question is: When on God’s green earth are the Republicans going to point this out?

      • rbc

I wish we wouldn’t use that word around here, or anywhere. If Sarah Palin is right to call for Rahm’s resignation over the inappropriate use of the “r” word, then using other variations of it in a nonsatirical manner should equally raise alarm bells. Just my two cents.

        • http://slcliberty.blogivists.com randy streu

I don’t personally think he should resign because of it. Not when there are so many, better reasons for him to do so.

But honestly, blogger rhetoric is what it is. If it offends you ask somebody to stop. It doesn’t sound like it offends you, though. It sounds more like you’re just being what you believe is pragmatic.

          Meh.

          • GregInFla

the name? Or was it a slight to the mentally retarded to compare them to the liberal radicals that Emmanuel referred to? I happen to agree with Palin that lumping a group together with liberal radicals is unfair to that group and brings them down.

          • http://slcliberty.blogivists.com randy streu

You really want a liberal radical to step down for comparing people to liberal radicals? Good luck with that.

According to the CIA factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/), If you look at the death rates in Europe they are much higher than ours. If we had France’s death rate, for example, we would have about 65,000 more deaths each year. Assuming that is because of the difference in health care, if we subtract out the 40,000 deaths (according to that thoroughly debunked study constantly cited by Libtards) we actually save 25,000 lives by not going to European-style healthcare. (See what I did there?) BTW, France was rated the #1 health care system in the world by the World Health Organization.

    • http://seekingliberty.wordpress.com fmaidment

A quick google search shows that even the liberals can’t agree on a number, which ranges from 18,000 (American Progress) to 22,000 (Slate) to 40,000 (Democratic Underground).

With estimates that wide-ranging, makes one wonder just how they determined, well… Anything…

I also think Dave Camp was good. I am kind of disappointed he did not get the kind of coverage that he should get.

I don’t know a ton about this issue, so I just did some google-ing. It looks like the Associated Press scores it 1-1, saying “Both are right, but Obama offered important context that Alexander left out. ” Does the Associated Press have it wrong? Here’s the link I found: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/02/25/us/politics/AP-US-Health-Summit-Fact-Check.html?_r=1&scp=4&sq=lamar&st=cse

Impressive guy. He’s quoting Senate history.

  • RedBeard

    Our president is both.

  • theocracy

Alexander and Obama can both claim that their position is correct, based upon what I read. In the individual market (folks buying insurance on their own, not through their employer, maybe less than 20 percent of the market), the cost of the exact same policy one currently has should decline in cost. There’s dispute as to how many people would actually do this, as opposed to improve their policies (at a higher cost, of course), but provisions in the bill allow such plans to be grandfathered even if they don’t meet the new mandated minimum standards. So, many people in the individual market are likely to see premiums increase.

But, more than half of those people (again, in the individual market) would be eligible for subsidies which would cover more than half of the premium. So, I think you can arrive at the conclusion that premiums would go down for those already in the individual market, and that Obama is “more righter”. Those who choose not to buy health insurance currently, well yes, their costs will go up (from zero).

I’m trying to be polite and thoughtful about this subject, but I need to take issue with a few commenters. The AP is in the tank for Obama? Please. You’re really not bolstering the case for being taken seriously with comments like that.

    • nessa

I’ve been involved in the execution of events reported in the news, in Iraq and Afghanistan, by AP, Reuters, PMSNBC and others. Their reports bore no semblance to reality but did bear a striking resemblance to leftist talking points. I would say your final comment pretty well eliminates your ever being taken seriously here.

      • theocracy

Nessie, I’m not sure that sitting in your dorm room playing Medal of Honor on your PlayStation really qualifies as being involved “in the execution of events reported in the news”, but, okay. Can you site specific examples of what you mean? I’d welcome the opportunity to learn.

Okay, that was mean of me. But what you’re saying is that since I question someone’s contention, absent any evidence, that an news organization with (according to their website) 243 bureaus in 97 countries and 3000 journalists is biased against accurate reporting, that means that my thoughts and opinions have no place in this forum. Do I have that right?

If, in fact, anyone here considers using this site (and similar sites) as a tool to try to change opinion, as opposed to an echo chamber, perhaps a refutation of the point I put forth would be more helpful than what you posted. But perhaps I’m mistaken as to the purpose of sites such as these.

        • http://slcliberty.blogivists.com randy streu

If you were interested in actual debate, you’d be more than welcome.

Since you’ve instead chosen to denegrate the word (and service record) of one of our members, I’ve come to the conclusion that you’re a trollish douche who should no longer be allowed to waste our time.

Sadly, that isn’t my call to make.

        • http://andrightlyso.com/ civil_truth

From the Posting Rules, here’s the key pair of sentences:

The purpose of this site is promote conservative and Republican ideals. This is our home, and we ask you kindly not to track mud into it.

In other words, RedState is not a debating society – it’s about advocacy of conservative values and building the Republican Party. So keep that in mind, use reasoned arguments, and show a willingness to listen, Else your stay here is likely to be short.

Your screen name does suggest that the above may be beyond your constitution, but we shall see.

About healthcare, from what I’ve been reading, grandfathering is under the bus, as all health care policies, current and future, will have to meet new Federal standards that will be more stringent than many existing policies. And that will cause premiums to rise.

Subsidy doesn’t make premium increases go away, it just shifts the cost to somewhere else for a while, which is hardly an argument in favor of affordability, but rather an argument that someone else should pay.

And when you add a new Federal agency that can veto rate increases, you are moving towards premium by fiat, which essentially at best turns insurance companies into public utilities, and at worse becomes a Trojan Horse for single-payer.

Now if you’re in favor of Single Payer, that’s a position worth debating in terms of costs and outcomes (and we do have longitudinal studies in Britain and Canada) – but that debate is one that so far the Democrats have not been able to convince Congress of – hence these backdoor efforts to sabotage the current system by amplifying the worst features of our current system and barring experimentation at the state level with reforms by mandating these changes nationwide.

Are you a Leftist democrat trying to bat around some Conservatives? Or are you some little child in the basement typing on a keyboard? Either way, your stay here will not last even a month.

        • aesthete

Using any objective rubric (donations to candidates, polling, etc.), it’s quite clear that the media’s membership is overwhelmingly progressive. Anecdotal evidence, such as the fact that several Carter and Clinton staffers migrated to cush media positions, not as analysts, but as purportedly objective members of the media, supports the picture painted by the evidence. Of course, the predilection of those involved in the media doesn’t necessarily indicate bias, but given these facts and other anecdotal observations, such as CBS’ misreporting of Bush’s National Guard service and Reuters’ shoddy and manipulative reporting on the Israel-Lebanon Crisis, one has to be of a certain ideological bent to assume a priori that there is no bias, simple because an organization is large. (Personally, I would say that the bias is by and large unintentional, and affects what is not reported more than what is reported.)

This isn’t an attempt to chickenhawk, but Nessa’s a US Army veteran, and has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He knows what he’s talking about. My own father was a USAF linguist during the Sandinista happenings and the US-supported Manuel Noriega ouster (Operation Nifty Package), and he can tell you right now, the media completely misrepresented the two events.

Judging by your username and your incendiary comments so far, I’d say that you’re here to flamebait, not engage in reasonable conversation, and hereby Franz Rule you:

        • Trelaina

That was more than “mean” of you. That was pretty dumb.

You take the statement “I?ve been involved in the execution of events reported in the news” and assume that person really meant they know about the subject because they play video games?

I wouldn’t dare come in here and claim WE at RedState are disparaging you after that statement.

You might want to click on the link that says NESSA (not Nessie) so you can see that you just insulted a 20+ year retiree from our United States military and a member of our site for over a year with a significant posting and commenting history.

An apology of more than “that was mean of me” may be in order.

…don’t worry about being mean to me, I’ve been cursed at by men who make their living at it, I’ve been shot at by folks who were glad to die just trying to take me with them. I’ve lived a life most people are afraid to live, your little comments don’t earn much more than a raised eyebrow. One note, if you click on a commenter’s name it will take you to their profile page, then you can see who you are talking to. Welcome to Redstate FNG.

My main issue with your comment was this:

“The AP is in the tank for Obama? Please. You?re really not bolstering the case for being taken seriously with comments like that.”

One of the several newsworthy events I was involved in over the space of my career, I described here. “The Day I Fired The MSM” by Vladimir. You’ll have to sort through the comments to find it but I think the other comments will only help back up my opinion.

As for your concerns about us not being taken seriously, your 15 days, 20 hours and three comments on RS don’t add to your persona around here. Its not really a good idea to come in here as a FNG and start telling long time, respected members what is or is not taken seriously. By all means disagree with us, but don’t start telling us what we should or should not be doing.

I’m figuring this is pretty much talking to the wind, as I see it, anyone who still believes the media is not slanted to the left cannot see with his own eyes or hear with his own ears. My telling you differently is not going to change your talking points. Only OfA or Kos can do that, it seems to be their eyes and ears you are using. But in the interest of being fair I thought I would show you a tad more respect than you did any of us and give you an opportunity.

    All The Way!! Airborne!!

It took me a little longer than usual to reply to that, I had to get my BP back within reasonable levels, and to see the pile on and the blamming while I was gone is absolutely heart warming! Thank you one and all! I knew I felt at home here but to see you all leap to my defense, wow, what a confirmation! These words were never truer and there is no finer gift anyone could give a Soldier…

      We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
      This day shall gentle his condition;
      And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

The clip above clearly cuts out the part of the exchange where the President provides the context of the disagreement.

Premiums on the coverage that people currently have will go down 15%. Because of the savings and the affordability of better insurance, some people will choose to purchase better insurance that will be about 10-13% more expensive, thus the stats that Fox News puts up. In my opinion, this is a good thing for Americans, with some choosing to take advantage of getting a better value for their dollar.

How is this not a good thing for average Americans? And why distort the issue without presenting all the facts so people can have an informed opinion?
