Consumers want DVD convenience and freedom

I have written about the legal battle going on over RealDVD before (see here and here).  For those of you who don’t follow the issue RealNetworks developed software that would allow consumers to legitimately save a copy of DVDs they own to their computer’s hard drive for back up in case of loss or to watch without needing to carry around the hard copy (for | Read More »

Mike Pence on the GOP as the principled opposition

I had the privilege of speaking with Congressman Mike Pence this morning. As I told him on the phone, I was excited to talk to a staunch conservative from Central Indiana having gone to high school and college there myself. He was just as eloquent an advocate for conservative ideas and principles as I expected him to be. I decided that what I wanted to | Read More »

Ted Strickland fails to take Obama’s advice

When President Barack Obama wants to prove he is a centrist, and not afraid to tell his own supporters they are wrong, the one thin reed he has is some nice words on education policy.  True, he doesn’t have much of an actual record of bucking the education lobby on policy (see Freddoso for example) but he does have a history of rhetorically supporting charter | Read More »

President Obama and Governor Strickland’s popularity dropping in Ohio

As voters get to see President Obama and Ohio Governor Strickland respond to the economic tough times their impressions of the two leaders change.  Both are seeing their poll numbers drop. The Dayton Daily News had the Strickland story yesterday.  And the truth of the matter is that Strickland’s handling of the economy was never that popular.  But the Quinnipiac poll has some interesting numbers: | Read More »

    The Movie industry’s shortsighted fight

Leave aside your feelings about 2008 Libertarian Presidential candidate Bob Barr (pro or con) because I think we can agree he is right on this issue: There is now unfolding in a federal court in San Francisco a lawsuit in which several major Hollywood movie studios are suing RealNetworks – a relatively small but successful company that develops and markets Internet communications technology – in | Read More »

    Obama clueless on economic development

So President Barack Obama was in my fair city today.  No, I didn’t go hear him speak.  I have a cold that causes me to cough like I smoke 10 packs of unfiltered menthol cigarettes a day.  So instead, I figured I would do what all good bloggers do: criticize his remarks from the comfort of my desk. In all seriousness, I do believe that | Read More »

    Zero-Tolerance Idiocy Continues

The Columbus Dispatch has the details: A Northland High School student could be expelled after playing with a Nerf foam-dart gun in school. Devon Smith, 14, said he could not resist firing the toy at a friend after a classmate brought it to class. “He was shooting at another one of my friends, and I moved closer, and I had a shot and missed somebody,” | Read More »

I hope Ohio conservatives are happy now

I understand the frustration conservatives have with Mike DeWine.  Really, I do.  But it drives me crazy when conservatives refuse to see the reality of the playing field.  Conservatives grumbled and attacked Mike DeWine with venom every chance they got.  And I am confident a number of them refused to vote for him. Well, now Sherrod Brown is going to provide the vote that allows | Read More »

    Amen, Tony Blair, Amen

Say what you will about Tony Blair, but he has a way with words.  And his remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast are dead on: ‘I recall giving an address to the country at a time of crisis. I wanted to end my words with “God bless the British people”,’ he said. ‘This caused complete consternation. Emergency meetings were convened. The system was aghast. ‘Finally, | Read More »

Democratic Boondoggle Seeks To Lock in Leviathan

Let’s just be honest about the monstrosity labeled the stimulus package: It will not stimulate the economy in any where near the fashion the Democrats claim it will (if it manages to do so at all). It is not even really designed to do so. It is instead an attempt to grow the size and reach of government and cement it there for generations. The | Read More »

    Watching History Made?

You would think that someone with a Masters degree in history and a long history of political wonkery would be interested in this historic coronation inauguration.  Put aside partisan differences and just enjoy the pagentry and excitement, right? Sorry, no can do.  But I don’t bring bitterness or anger to this but rather a exhausted cynicism instead.  Barack Obama will be sworn in as president | Read More »

    For Privacy’s Sake

At the risk of undermining my reputation for manliness (stop laughing), I will admit that on reading this New York Times article I felt like weeping. In all seriousness, the tragic nature of the acts described nearly brought me to tears right at my desk. If you can read this and not feel similar emotions then you are stronger than me: Amalia Dominguez was 18 | Read More »

Why is Hollywood so against consumers?

I will admit up front that I am not a lawyer nor a techie.  But someone recently brought this issue to my attention and it struck me as just another example of Hollywood being anti-consumer.  Here is the basic story:

Strategic Mistake in the Pro-Life Cause

I wrote about the ongoing battle in the OH-15 race between Steve Stivers and Mary-Jo Kilroy on the front page, but I wanted to add some potentially more contentious comments here. One reason this race is this close is because a conservative Christian ran as an independent and there was a libertarian candidate on the ballot as well. Both canidates took between four and five | Read More »

    OH-15: Stivers widens lead

First the good news:: The final vote tallies from Madison County were released this morning, and they continue to build the small lead that Republican congressional candidate Steve Stivers has over his Democratic rival, Mary Jo Kilroy. With provisional and late-absentee ballots added to the total, Stivers picked up 373 votes from Madison County and Kilroy gained 258. That enlarges Stivers’ overall lead by 115 | Read More »

The “reality based community” strikes again

As I experience my worst college football season in my lifetime – Michigan fan living in Columbus, Ohio – and the economy heads toward whatever it is heading toward, I thought I would offer a little comic relief. The picture below was take in the parking lot of a local grocery store.

    Do facts matter?

My reaction to the last two debates is to pose the question above. Do facts matter? It seems not. It seems to me that what matters is the persona and personality of the candidates. Obama is cool and collected. He calmly answers the questions. He seems comfortable in his own skin. No matter what is said he keeps pounding his Bush caused this and McCain | Read More »

    Obama lying about Ayers

I think we can definitively put the “he was just some guy in my neighborhood explanation” behind us. Noted racist right wing organization CNN has a report on the relationship between Obama and William Ayers and they found “the relationship between Obama and Ayers went much deeper, ran much longer, and was much more political than Obama said.” Here is the video: For the details | Read More »

Obama-Biden continue to distort and deceive

Obama started the distortion last night: Just one last point I want to make, since Senator McCain talked about providing a $5,000 health credit. Now, what he doesn’t tell you is that he intends to, for the first time in history, tax health benefits. The Biden did what he does best and talk out of his – well, the side of his mouth: John McCain | Read More »

    Overflow Debate Live Blog

I encourage everyone who is able to participate the in the Live Blog on the front page. In case of technical problems, or an overwhelming number of comments, I wanted to make you aware that I will also be live blogging the debates at Obama’s Con. The limits of the system make it hard to always approve comments in a timely manner and the chat | Read More »
