Obama nominates Taliban attorney to head Department of Justice division.

american taliban john lindh anthony west

I just can’t make stuff like this up. Barack Obama appointed Tony West to head the Justice Department’s Civil Division. Who is this Tony West? He’s the attorney that defended the “American Taliban” John Walker Lindh. Screedblog has the details here.

Tony West works out of the San Francisco office of Morrison Foerster. Three things come to mind when looking over his biography.

  • First, I giant well done to Tony for his work in prosecuting child pornography groups.
  • Second, he was part of the Janet Reno team that went after the evil Microsoft over their browser. Remember that debacle? Way to go Janet – fight those evil browser mongers. But I digress.
  • Third, how did John Walker Lindh, a guy living in the caves of Afghanistan afford this Harvard educated attorney?

Also, Newsbusters reports that Tony West raised $65 million for Obama’s presidential campaign. Picture below. I guess ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC thought this story to be not newsworthy.

Lindh’s parents paid for his legal representation.

Now, remember that Lindh was not treated as a prisoner of war or an irregular combatant, but was brought to trial in civilian criminal court. Tony West’s defending Lindh as an individual is a criminal proceeding in no way makes him a “Taliban attorney”. The Taliban didn’t hire him, Lindh’s parents did.

Now if you want to challenge his competency, then provide some facts. Overall, he sound like the kind of attorney one would expect from a leading San Francisco law firm.

I don’t see any smoking guns so far. Let’s hold our fire for real breaches – we’re not going to get conservatives appointed in the administration.

The guy was on the battlefield as member of the Taliban. How many lawyers on this board would get in line to represent the Imperial Japanese Army or the SS if this was the 1940′s?

Isn’t the smoking gun the fact that he was willing spouting usual legal BS to get this guy off? A guy who as part of the Taliban. You know – the group that wants to keep women uneducated, stone homosexuals to death, destroy democratic governments etc. And THIS guy is going to head a DOJ Civil Division?
