Gillibrand’s Controversy

Kirsten Gillibrand is a Democrat from upstate New York, and she’s also someone who the NRA has given a high rating because she supports the 2nd Amendment.

I don’t understand why those two things are causing so much concern in New York politics. It doesn’t make much sense historically, and it doesn’t make any sense now.

The only reason I can think of that would explain why her NRA rating would be seen as a negative attribute is that most of the people who are attacking her don’t really think the 2nd Amendment describes an individual right to own firearms. It’s difficult to explain to some of these people that not only was that settled when the Constitution was written, it was recently reaffirmed by D.C. vs. Heller. It’s even more difficult to explain to a handful of them why her support for 2nd Amendment rights is nothing that should cause them any loss of sleep. It shouldn’t, if it does.

The most responsible people I know in the United States are the ones who own their own firearms, who use them regularly, and who are licensed in their states, and who take care of them personally. There isn’t anyone among us who want to see “illegal guns” in the hands of criminals, which is how some of the more deceptive opponents of her appointment are trying to portray her views. I’m very glad, and not just as a partisan Republican, to see a centrist Democrat from upstate New York who isn’t a 2nd Amendment denier be appointed to the U.S. Senate. It’s about time! that Governor Paterson and the rest of New York State recognized that, YES folks, there are hundreds of thousands of intelligent, productive, credentialed, responsible and honest — and LIBERAL — people in New York State who are also perfectly capable of owning a firearm, many of whom own them right now and will in the future, and who view their ability to continue to do so as very important.

The truth is that the only people who are carping and whining about Gillibrand’s NRA rating are the extremists who think that all privately-owned firearms should be confiscated. Her NRA rating is the result of her sensible understanding that people who own firearms legally are not the problem, and never have been.

I know that as a resident of a neighboring state, I’m glad to see Governor Paterson recognize that people with positive ratings from the NRA are excellent choices to represent their states in the U.S. Senate.

I want to encourage every NRA member, regardless of party, to contact Governor Paterson’s office in New York and let him know personally that we appreciate his willingness to understand that.

Here is the contact information.

Then she is qualified for Obama Administration.

Paging MSM? You need to recommend Gillibrand to your Boss O. She has the qualification (read: controversy) as an official of the Obamanation.

But controversy is not much compared to scandals as per Dems’ standards. If it’s a major scandal, my Kowalski, I’m sure she will be immediately hired by the Obamessiah.

this one suggests that she may actually be friendly to the Constitution… totally wrong for the Obama administration.

My guns, please! I just bought them last December. My investment may get lost if the libs/dems get their dirty hands on our gun rights. That’s why I fear that Obama will put his dirty fingers into the SCOTUS.

Gillibrand will really be good to be part of Obama Administration to protect my guns! I assume that NRA is correct about her.

From Ben Smith at Politico… apparently New York Assemblyman Peter Rivera is having a hissy-fit.

I [Rivera] am troubled by Governor Paterson?s choice to replace Hillary Clinton as New York?s Junior Senator. I find no compelling reason for the Governor to select a conservative Democrat to carry on the progressive work of now Secretary of State Clinton.

In fact, Rep. Gillibrand?s stand on a range of issues is counter to the desires of the majority of New Yorkers, including her hard-line stand on immigration, which borders on xenophobia. The Governor had a long list of extremely qualified and talented New Yorkers to consider that would not have created the opposition he will face. None of the other candidates have an anti-immigration record.

His choice will no doubt anger New York?s huge immigrant communities and could go as far as creating political obstacles to meaningful immigration reform efforts of our new President. It is clear to me that Rep. Gillibrand will face a primary and create splits among New York Democrats that will only serve to damage our party.

The Governor and his top aids should have reviewed Rep. Gillibrand?s statements on immigration and reviewed the anti-immigration legislation she sponsored and cosponsored.

Rep. Gillibrand has, as constituents, thousands of minorities and business interests that rely and benefit from immigration, yet she has opposed amnesty, wants a guest worker program that basically serves as 21st Century slavery, and wants to use local police to enforce federal immigration law, against the advice of state law enforcement groups.

Her support for more walls and guards on our southern border ignores the reality that almost 60% of our undocumented immigrants are foreigners who overstay their visas. They are from all over our planet, not just people crossing the Rio Grande.

If she’d like to move to AZ I’d donate to her campaign against McCain, Democrat or not.

The fact that McCain won’t like her just seals the deal with me. Hope he takes it as the equivalent as a kick in the teeth to both him and his sweetie-pie, Hillary.

Because the people in the upstate areas really actually don’t very much enjoy the policies that the downstate folks have been following.

Hillary is very much a “downstate” New Yorker, and that’s why this is an important shift. People who live in upstate New York are really getting pretty tired of what the downstaters have done in the name of “open borders”. They can’t leave — not yet — because to do so would mean abandoning their homes.

But I think Paterson is recognizing that they’re getting fed up with the “let’s bring everyone in and pay for them” policies.

    • Kowalski

I hope McCain doesn’t think he’s going to run again. If he does, he should really realize that it’s over for him in terms of Presidential politics.

      • mbecker908

running for reelection. And he’ll win in a walk.

I think all the worthless old SOB wants now is to go out with a record like Robert Byrd. Or something like that. I just wish he go away and spend some quality time trying to visit all of his wife’s houses.

        • janis

Longest career in the Senate or biggest doddering old fool?

          • mbecker908

As far as I’m concerned he’s already beaten him on the doddering old fool part.

Kowalski is absolutely right about Northern New York versus Buffalo-south. I know a great many people up here who’d be just as happy to let them break off and form their own state. Maybe then the rest of us would get a voice, too.
