Are we headed for WWIII?

Even though I can be sourpussed, I don’t usually like to be pessimistic, either in terms of my outlook for the future (regardless of the occupant of the Oval Office) or in terms of things like seeing my children and their children survive into the 22nd century. I try not to think about the worst-case scenarios, even though I know people who do have to think about them and place some kind of risk assessment or even a probability on them, because they do that for a living.

It’s a risky thing to think about the end of the world: you need to have a lot of information, and a lot of it is probably wrong. But since I’m not one of the people who gets paid to make those kinds of assessments, I don’t have access to any of the information that goes into making them. And I get worried when I see things like I’m seeing now.

Because I realistically think we might be looking at WWIII before this year is out.

I say that because now seems like a particularly good time in history for people who hate Western Civilization, and in particular people who hate the United States, to take a crack at dealing us the Final Blow. Our economy is reeling. We have a naive and inexperienced President who relies on a lot of intellectuals of indeterminate decisionmaking ability to run the country. We’re not in a very good position militarily to flex any unextended muscles. And frankly a lot of our allies would rather do something else than help the United States.

So it seems to me that the next six months are really probably the most dangerous time in the history of the world, in the last half century at least. It strikes me as very logical that if an adversary wanted to take a shot at finally bringing down the Great Satan, they would look at what’s happening right now, maybe wait a month or so, and then go for it — because in their mind, you hit the enemy when they’re weakest, not when they’re starting to rebound. I’ve had a lot of people tell me in the past few days — not politicians but business people — that the next six months are going to be the worst times in their lives. By extension that means that America is pretty much at the lowest ebb it could be at, and I don’t doubt that our adversaries know that.

The consequences of a major terrorist or foreign strike on the United States right now would be horrific not just in terms of the human casualties, but also because I think it would lead to an overwhelming and disconcerted response on the part of the people who are now leading the country. I don’t think they would have the first idea about what to do. The more I think about, it the less I believe our current leaders would be able to defend this country effectively, in fact. I think they would be chaotic and very unprepared to handle an attack on America.

From the point of view of an enemy, thinking this way scares the living daylights out of me, because I think an attack on the United States right now would lead to a cataclysmic global war. The American people are angry enough right now, even if our politicians aren’t, and I think they would demand an enormous mobilization, and we might wind up nuking a few hundred million people.

Think I’m crazy? Please tell me why.

Not because he is not a reckless, aggression inviting latest weakness exuding democrat, but only because he is only one factor in your doomsday scenario.

But, yes, I do think we will be tested, probably by Russia.

The fact is that Obama and mainly, the USA is a huge beneficiary of the war Bush waged against those that could cause the doomsday. But the fact is that we have to be perfect in doomsday prevention and they have to be successful only once, which is increasingly easier given technology.

When Kyrgyzstan said Tuesday that it intended to shut the base to U.S. troops, Moscow announced that it was extending the country $2 billion in loans plus $150 million in financial aid. That’s a tidal wave of cash for Kyrgyzstan, whose budget is barely more than $1 billion, and whose populace has been harried by electric shortages, rising food prices and rampant unemployment.  — LINK

Frustrated with some of his Western allies, in particular the United States, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has begun to reach out to Afghanistan’s giant northern neighbour Russia.

"When Karzai sees his former allies are not in power and the rest criticise him, instead of helping him, then he looks for new allies," said Shukriya Barakzai, a prominent parliamentarian.

The new allies, she said, were led by Russia, and included neighbours Iran and China who have economic interests in Afghanistan, but also reservations about the presence of foreign troops.  — LINK

Insert some quip about winning hearts & minds. Something Obama is obviously unable to do outside of the American Idol voting block.

Then our enemies will not have had enough time prior to Jan 20 to penetrate our defenses and organize an attack. We can only hope that those people will be able to continue to effective defend us for longer than 6 months.

The much bigger danger in the next 6 months are proxy actions against American interests overseas – Iran vs. Iraq, Israel, Eastern Europe, etc. that will restrict our ability to interfere with their operations. That’s where our Administration’s inexperience (and/or wrong strategic doctrine [think Hillary, etc,]) will offer a window of opportunity to our enemies.

Remember, our enemies are dealing with longer-range timetables. They can afford to defer direct actions that may arouse the sleeping giant – instead harry our defenses and capture our outposts while our appeasers blame us for their actions.

In short, the window is very real, but the test is going to be overseas, and perhaps more strategic. An example of this is today’s announced plans by the Kyrgyz government to close our base in Kyrgyzstan at Russia’s instigation (and money).

we fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here

The better explanation of the offensive strategy would be:

we fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them AS MUCH over here

we face a huge challenge to prevent ALL WMD attacks

spends most of its attention just avoiding a turnover in its own backcourt,
or we can play a half-court defense, and hope that al-Queda doesn’t hit a lucky 3 pointer.

Neither is fool-proof, but I think the full-court press gives us much better odds.

We’re not allowed to say it anymore, but it’s called The Global War On Terror.

Some people say it started with the Olympics in ’72. Others say the Iranian hostage deal. Still others say it was The USS Cole and/or the first WTC bombing that kicked things off. A few even say it didn’t really start until 9/11.

World War IV is what you’re talking about, Kowalski.

Truthfully, I and allot of others consider the cold war over and won when the wall came down (God Bless Ronald Wilson Reagan).

I’d honestly forgotten about Podhoretz’ writing on the subject.

        Cheers !

One might also say that the Islamist war against the west began even before 1979. Certainly we didn’t begin to fight back until 2001. And we may have already won it. But we won’t know until years after.

Of course, the war against evil began when Cain killed Abel and won’t end until the Second Coming, and given that the US is all that stands between evil and liberty, we will always be the target until we go the way of Rome.

They were fighting Napoleon and they also got into the War of 1812 with us.

WWI was sparked in the Balkans. Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Bosnia, Hungary, Ukraine, Georgia, Austria, Poland. Follow that zig zag line of countries next to the Russian border and think about what will happen when Russia reasserts its czarist heritage and becomes a new bear, conquering these countries with their bustling economies and their oil pipelines. Will even NATO membership save these countries from Russian greed?

I have had similar thoughts recently (although admittedly more vague than what you have outlined), and I cannot see our enemies passing up on the opportunities presented by the present (and future) circumstances.

I have always thought that if Obama was elected, it would be like waving a red flag at our enemies, particularly the Russians and Iranians. I am not scared as much by what they can do to us (although it would not be trivial), but more by the response of our elected leaders (and the subsequent reaction of whichever of our numerous enemies took the first swing). I see much potential for over reaction, or under reaction, or flying off the handle reaction, or inaction, or freeze-in-the-headlights reaction, and other such bad consequences. I don’t think that they (the Obama administration) has a correct, timely, strong, and measured response in them. And I honestly do not have a feel for how they might react to a given situation. With Bush, I felt I could predict what our response would be, but with Obama….?

Whatever happens (if it happens), it will be bad…

Likely be the salvation of America and Conservatism. It took WW2 to end the Great Depression and give rise to a socially conservative era followed by a fiscally and militarily conservative era.

WW3-provided we win it- would build support for a big military, flood the American economy with real stimulus (money spent on steel and tanks and hummers and tractors not social projects), and hugely increase social conservatism as soldiers returned home to their girlfriends, married, and raised family. Also terrorism from Islam is likely to increase support (or at least lessen media ridicule) of the Religious Right. This era of social conservatism would be followed by fiscal conservatism as a growing middle class who is upwardly mobile, and who fought for freedom won’t want the government to take away their money and give it to those who are inept or strive less. As parents strive to provide for a upward climbing nuclear family, they will want the government to be the government and not the parent all the young single or divorced liberals want it to be now.

If our enemies truly wish to defeat us, they only need be patient. We have a new administration dedicated to Socialism and an emboldened left that is seeking to strip down the rights enumerated under the Bill of Rights to establish the premise that Government is superior to the rights of Man.

Think not, see H.R. 45, Understand the Fairness Doctine for what it really is (imposition of fascistic Control on speech, already begun under McCain-Feingold) and then look at the coming FOCA and the slew of Executive Orders Obama will sign to erode states rights and destroy the premise that the rights of the individual flow not from the creator, but from the Government.. If they can achieve that, there will be nothing here to save, it will be time to tear down and start over,

What I see happening is the very real possibility of us slipping into civil war which would be the most dangerous time for us a a nation. The Federal Government is out of control and BOTH of our parties has sold us out for 30 pieces of silver,

The elite of business decided thievery was the more direct method to achieve wealth so they destroyed our economy to line their own pockets and all the while we have allowed our Politicians to bankrupt us by purchasing the votes of self centered individuals, many of whom hate the country that makes them the vaunted few lucky on the planet.

There is not much time to turn this around. Quite frankly, I am ready to make the stand and bear the pain to make things right again and reassert the rights that make men and women to free on the grant of the inalienable rights that did not attain to them from government, but by their mere creation as individuals. Maybe it is time to start over.
