VA-Gov: Can McAuliffe Buy Richmond?

With so many people and discussions focused on what Republicans can do to prepare for 2010, many forget that political ground zero this year will be the Commonwealth of Virginia where the governor is elected in odd years, and incumbents can’t run – so it’s always a near-free for all. Rasmussen has it pretty wide open, which isn’t surprising.

Now, enter the former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. This LA Times blogger posits that Virginia’s lack of campaign finance limits is bad news for Republicans since Terry has raised almost a billion (with a B) dollars for Democrats – a sum that even the President-elect can respect. And his ability to raise cash has already had a very direct impact on the race. One of his opponents, State Delegate Brian Moran actually resigned his seat prior to the start of the legislative session primarily because he would be prohibited from raising campaign cash during that term.

So yes, there’s going to be no shortage of dollars for Dems in the Commonwealth this year. But I highly doubt that’s the biggest problem. While the GOP has lost a slew of statewide offices over the last six years, the Virginia party has…well, it seems like they’ve gotten pretty good at throwing pointy objects at each other.

The only bright spot? We’ve got a great candidate in VA Attorney General Bob McDonnell. Solid conservative who’s been successful in both office and the ballot box. Can he raise the money to compete in the absence of a well-oiled GOP machine? You can help with that. (This is my first donation of 2009, but it won’t be my last.)

The Dems have a winning formula: vote for us and we will give you money. McAuliffe is no different. He will campaign on a slew of government programs and the people will take the bait. It’s not about principal it’s about cash especially in a down economy. I hope McDonnell can make his case while offering them some reasonable relief in the short term.

    Just a dream…

Virginia doesn’t NEED to be a dem state at ALL.

I donated to McCain and wow do I feel good about that. I am not going to contribute to a “bailout” of the GOP until they show me that they have a plan for reestablishing conservative principals.

I would rather see the Directors of Red State run the GOP than the fools they are parading out now.

The GOP has a lot of work ahead of it and we need to get some solid leadership.

There are still individual candidates who are in need of support so they can actually do something to get the party to get its act together. Those individuals can’t do it alone.

The GOP is me. And you.

Guess we better get to it then.

Sounds like a good slogan for our mission.

VA has had some really not so much Republican candidates in the past. I don’t blame anyone for not supporting some GOP candidates like McCain, and Gilmore lost before he even entered the race. I blame the GOP for allowing such egregious candidates to even get past go. Please don’t allow the bigger failures to cloud your judgement on McDonnell. The Republican’s have always been big in major dollar support when we have great candidates. McDonnell has a tremendous amount of support and enthusiasm here in VA, and I suspect he will get alot of VA donations. We simple cannot allow the Dems to BUY yet another seat. As an aside, the 2010 redistricting is going to depend in part on the seats held by Republicans, it is a critical issue for VA. I was told by a local that the redistricting issue should not be broached as it “tends to turn people off from politics. Helloooooo! Please support McDonnell, the 2009 election will not interfer with other donations as it is an off year.

We need a lot more than slogans.

We need someone with the strategic genius of Karl Rove, the tactical acumen of Tom Delay and the clear conservative thinking of Fred Thompson with the technical savvy of Steve Jobs thrown in.
We need a strategy for couteracting the MSM’s cheerleading for the Dems. More than 40% of voters still think the GOP controls congress.

Think about the implications. The same people who got us into this financial mess were all reelected. The same people who gave us “affordable housing” are in position to give us “affordable health care”.

No “bailout” for the GOP until they come up with a plan. Ya, that’s my slogan.

So it looks like we’re going to have to fix the problem.
