In 1980 a lot of Reagan's support was due to the Iranian hostage crisis which had dragged on and on and on with no end in sight as long as Carter was president. By the 2012 election, American combat in Libya and Iraq will be over, Osama Bin Laden will still be dead, and the war in Afghanistan won't be Obama's fault. In other words, no amount of Reagan "baggage" could equal Carter's Iranian baggage.

Newt has already done "something stupid to self destruct." He cheated on wife #1 with the woman who became wife #2; then he cheated on wife #2 with the woman who became wife #3; AND he led the effort to impeach Clinton for "lying about sex", the hypocrite!

Now, I think Obama's baggage of palling around with terrorists and attending a hate-America church for 20 years is far worse than Newt's baggage. Unfortunately 52% of Americans disagreed with me. So what can we do to attract at least 3% of those people, and is Newt the best person to attract them?

but like you, I disagree with him on many occasions.

He's a brilliant analyst but he's also strongly influenced by the Washington, DC crowd. That means he's tainted with the "DC fungus." He listens to DC conventional wisdom daily and he would be more than human if it didn't infect him to some degree. Simply because he's a staunch Conservative pundit doesn't mean he knows / understands everything political.

When I'm really interested in the intellectual foundation of Conservatism I listen to Krauthammer. When I want to learn about campaigning I listen more to my gut and the folks on RS.

The Newtmeister's rise in the polls defies all political pundit logic. Newt is not running a "typical" primary. What ever he's doing is currently working. Will he be the candidate? Only time will tell.

As much as I enjoy listening to Krauthammer it would be great fun to listen to him should Gingrich win the nomination and the election.
