Yes, it was almost three months ago. But these words still resonate in my brain. I am a 9/12er. I travelled to DC and rallied at the Capitol.
I was on my way to take a lunch break in DC between the rally at Freedom Plaza and the rally at the Capitol. A woman stopped me, who was obviously a local. She had her hands full of plastic bags, probably loaded with all the possessions she had in the world.
And she said these words to me:
How DARE you come here and do this in MY town!
I am naive yet in many ways. I had been to DC twice before during the GWB administration. The town at that time was seedy, full of homeless and a lot of filth. And I have to admit, this surprised me. After all, this is our nation’s capitol. It should be pristine. Clean. Like something out of the Stepford Wives or Pleasantville. But it seemed to me this time to have been cleaned up a little. Better. I was encouraged. But then came this one sentence, which stunned me to the core. And still reverberates in my mind.
How DARE you come here and do this in MY town!
And yes, it was obvious I was a 9/12er. I was wearing all the obligatory gear: tee shirt, cap and buttons. My first instinct was to say to her “this is my town too.” But taking one look at her, I knew she wouldn’t get it. I may be a small blond woman, but I am also smart. I was alone, no one but me in an area around the Capitol less travelled. I said nothing. I made no remark to her. I kept on walking as if no comment had ever been made.
Yes, this woman was black. By telling you this, would it make me the “r” word? Probably, by their standards. But I highly doubt these words would have been said to me, a white woman, if there was not a black man in “our house.” Frankly, I don’t care what color the person in the White House is, as long as he/she is qualified under the Constitution for the position. White, black, yellow, purple with pink polka dots, it makes no difference to me.
But I believe this is a symptom of the negative and divisive mentality that has been created since January 20, 2009. If we could count how many times the “r” word has been bandied about since this Administration came into office, we could probably pay off the national debt.
The rally was composed of probably 95% white people. Yes, there were a few blacks. Would this woman have said these words if she had run into a black 9/12er? We’ll never know.
Mr. Obama had conveniently decided not to be in town that day. He was at a healthcare event in Minneapolis. At least for part of the day. How nice. And later he claimed to know nothing of the mega-rally outside his so-called “front door.” I saw several choppers fly over the rally. They were so small, I couldn’t make out if any was Marine One. If Barry O was inside one of them, was he giving us the “finger,” a “high-five”? The latter I doubt, the former, probably. But who knows, I couldn’t see any faces.
My civics classes had always taught me that “Washington DC belongs to all the People. It is a special place. Everyone needs to visit there one day.” But this one sentence shook up all my ideals about our nation’s capitol, and the people who live and work there. This experience made me realize not everyone takes a civics class, or if they do, understands it. Not everyone has the benefit of the knowledge of the history of this town and what it means to the 320 million people who live in America; and who it belongs to. Not everyone has the benefit of understanding that “Hey, this is my town too.”
Mr. O, you live in “our house.” In “our town.” Please stop throwing around the “r” word. Let’s get this nation back on track and united again.

I would have told her "It's MY town, too"
TNJim (Diary) Saturday, November 28th at 1:51AM EST (link)but I’m politically incorrect that way. Same goes for Nashville, 250 miles away. It’s the state capitol so I consider it my town just the same as I do Kingsport.
Just as I do DC.
I decided I just needed to walk away..
ladyimpactohio (Diary) Saturday, November 28th at 2:04AM EST (link)she was obviously a homeless woman, and I didn’t want to get into a confrontation when there was no one else around. And she was a lot bigger than me.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
That's another one I thought of too..
ladyimpactohio (Diary) Saturday, November 28th at 2:05AM EST (link)but knew she wouldn’t get it. She had her God in the White House and that’s all she cared about.

civil truth (Diary) Saturday, November 28th at 2:25AM EST (link)An engaging tale raising an excellent insight about our nation’s capital – and to a larger degree, our government.
In particular, our Federal government doesn’t really own anything and have any rights over us besides what we’ve given them in the Constitution. It’s not their money that they let us keep by not taxing it, for instance.
Instead, the Fdderal government belongs to us all – and that goes for its residence too.
The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

I never get those types of comments however...
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Saturday, November 28th at 9:41PM EST (link)if I had I would love to the opportunity to CHAT with someone who thinks they own ALL of DC. There is the unfortunate problem of those who think own things that NEVER belonged to them in the first place. There are gangs in cities fighting over territory that belongs to the city but they die for their little piece of concrete anyway. There is a soul sickness inside of people in the inner cities that has been created by liberalism and their plantation politics.
It is a sad state of affairs that could be fixed if these people could only see that the way up is through Conservatives and FREE MARKETS. That anyone, anywhere is worthy of everything they desire if they get up and work hard for it. The conditions created by a FREE MARKET increases the job market for EVERYONE as WE saw through 6 years of President Bush until the liberals started writing the spending bills in 2006 and inserting language and spending that brought down the nation in 2008.
It will ONLY take 2 years of Conservatism for EVERYONE to have the same opportunities for advancement in this country and then perhaps a couple of generations for the gimme soul sickness to disappear! LIBERALISM MUST BE DESTROYED for this country to become whole!

I would have loved to 'chat' with her too..
ladyimpactohio (Diary) Sunday, November 29th at 12:22AM EST (link)however I am fairly certain she was homeless, her Messiah is in the White House; and she saw us as “invaders” in her “home.” I agree 100% with what you are saying, however I am certain this woman wouldn’t understand anything about free markets. This was a time when unfortunately I had to make the decision of whether I should say something or walk away. And because of concerns for my personal safety I decided to say nothing and walk away.

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Sunday, November 29th at 7:38AM EST (link)they NEVER respond back if you say something to them. How about some consideration for her
mom2oneson (Diary) Sunday, November 29th at 3:10PM EST (link)I can’t believe this diary is so disrespecting to the woman. How about some consideration? Maybe her favorite place to eat was too crowded to go into. Maybe she was tired. What about understanding why she felt the way she did? This is human nature to be feel intruded upon even if we don’t own it or it’s a public resource. A few weeks ago I joked with a friend that the new poor of the recession were crowded out my public use things like having to wait for a computer at the library, not being able to be seen at the free clinic because it was full for the day. The most conservative area I’ve been here in the south are AWFUL about new people being there. I’ve heard the same thing from other people in small cities. A few weeks ago there were protestors downtown, it took me an hour longer to run my errands. Yes I felt like they intruded on my street! Do I really think I have more of a right to the street, the library, the free clinic more than they do? No of course not and I’ve told many people about the clinic hoping they would utilize their services but we all get used to how things are any change will make us feel a little intruded upon. It’s just human nature.
” I had been to DC twice before during the GWB administration. The town at that time was seedy, full of homeless and a lot of filth”
So the homeless are included in the filth? She was homeless. She still deserves respect as a peson.. Should the homeless be moved away so you don’t have to look at her? How you view here is horrible. Her statement was not appropriate but how you view her is awful. I finally understand why republicans are seen by some as being uncompassionate and not caring about the poor.
Where is the "disrespect"?
ladyimpactohio (Diary) Sunday, November 29th at 8:29PM EST (link)I never disrespected the woman. I never talked to her. The “filth” I was referring to in the diary was garbage, etc. Especially on the mall. In the subways. On the streets. I think you are reading words into this that are not here. Homeless people do not “abhor” me. Most homeless are that by choice. I am merely pointing out that somewhere, somehow, and via someone, she certainly had the idea that no one had a “right” to be there except her, the locals, and especially the man in the White House. DC will always be the focal point of rallys, sit-ins, protests. It’s not going to change. And besides, the libs have a rally planned for Jan. 15. Wonder how she’s gonna react then. I am SURE not the same way as when I was there…

D.C. is my birthplace
proudmarinemom (Diary) Sunday, November 29th at 3:38PM EST (link)and was the birthplace of my parents and grandparents. My family has seen World War I, WWII, Vietnam, the riots following the assassination of MLK, Jr., every Presidential cortege, inauguration and parade from the steps of the Capitol. We’ve never seen anything like the Tea Party on September 12, 2009.
Whoever the woman was, she was mistaken. If she really is homeless, she is likely mentally ill, as there are ample resources here for people who need help and only the mentally disabled avoid it. Many, many private charities run shelters and soup kitchens, including Catholic Charities. She was not really inconvenienced by the presence of the demonstrators.
Because the District of Columbia belongs to all Americans, we natives have no greater claims on the city than others, and most of us are happy to have you all come here and see this magnificent city. Especially when you come to defend the Constitution.
Another good response to people like her...
