It’s “not dead yet…”
http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2009/12/18/correcting-the-record-on-organizing-for-america/ to quote Monty Python.
Organizing for America is a hollow shell. It’s been a hollow shell from pretty much the moment that it stopped being a ’sexy*’ campaign tool that didn’t actually require its members to do anything except hand over money and votes.
Not an empty shell, either.
OFA. Organizing for America. An arm of the DNC that operates under the auspices of our so-called “Thief in Chief.” I have been frustrated with all the crapola going down in DC, and couldn’t figure out why Conservatives are losing all the time. But I have hit on the answer. We are not organized. We have not learned community organizing from the finest Community Organizer in Chief.
O’s got his own little website. Ain’t that special. He rounds up a posse, reins them in; and does intensive training to teach them to succumb to “his modus operandi.”
So you guys are probably wondering how I know all this. I love to sign up for e-mail alerts that the left is spewing. I get them from tons of lib groups and their sources. I even signed up for one from O. He loves to give alerts. He loves to get you involved. He loves to send out sob stories about people with no insurance. And he loves to get people actively involved in his cabal of canvassers, volunteers and activists.
So one day I get this e-mail that he is holding a “seminar” on how to get involved in OFA and advance his agenda. Hmmm. About 3 miles from me. So I got the idea, why not attend. Why not see how they go about frustrating and beating us down at every turn. So I went. Undercover. As a lib. I sat with all the union workers. The college kids enamored with O. “He is so wonderful. He is bringing about the change we really need.”
The first part of the meeting was “meet and greet.” Now O is smart. Plied us with pizza and other food, but unfortunately no beer. We held hands. We introduced ourselves. We divided up into small groups and chatted amongst ourselves. All of you may think this is corny, but is works. By the end of the evening we were a “family.” All focused on one thing: defeating the Conservatives in every manner that we could. Down and not really dirty but no holds barred and very creative.
I was pretty stunned when the seminar leader first announced:
We apologize that President Obama’s agenda hasn’t advanced fast enough for all of you. It will soon pick up more quickly. He has promised he will have a healthcare bill signed into law by Christmas, or State of the Union at the latest.
Not advancing fast enough. Whoa, Nellie. I about tossed my cookies. But I am an excellent undercover agent, and just nodded my head in agreement. We were given tons of papers. A “cheat sheet” of what to say to people we were going to contact, and answers to prospective questions. Any contacts would be logged. Time, date, who they were and contact info. What their position was. Would they get others involved. Would they call Congress members. Extremely detailed and organized.
We saw a video. We made friends. We practiced with each other the “speech” we would give to prospects on the phone, friends, family members, and members of our neighborhood and community. We were taught to “get over” our fear of contact.
I fully expected to go home, get a phone call from them in a few days, tell them I had changed my mind and that I wasn’t interested anymore.
But then lo and behold another opportunity arose. I was asked to be part of an on-line training session. How to “build the base.” How to log info. How to enter info into the DNC/OFA websites. I vacillated. This would be going deeper into the fox’s lair. But in the end, curious and “needing to know’” why Conservatives were losing all the time, I decided to go ahead.
This was a web-based training session. No interaction on the attendees part. The webinar instructor was moving quickly through the OFA/DNC databases. And all the while the seminar teacher was talking, I was getting screen shots of a ton of stuff. And it is frightening. Special emphasis to MOE. This is an organization that cannot be taken lightly. They are highly organized and detail-oriented. Every call, every contact, every attempted contact is logged in by the volunteer.
OFA puts up phone banks. On the streets. The college kids love to do this. Obama concentrates on universities and college towns. The kids set up tables on the street. They have the rep’s & senator’s numbers on speed dial. They hand the phone to the person and ask them to read a scripted spiel to the rep or Senator. They knock on doors. They hand a cell phone to the person answering the door. “The call is free. All you have to do is read these few sentences to your Congressman.” And of course this is logged.
Metrics are used. They have voting info and results of every precinct in the country. They don’t waste time in precincts that have consistently gone red. There is concentration in the inner city, where people don’t have access to Congressional information. That is where the cell phone comes in handy.
And more. I saw how they tossed Lincoln. And I am sure they used the same method on Nelson. OFA has “rapid response teams.” All the troops are called in during an “emergency.” That is why their databases are so important. They tossed Lincoln by calling everyone in their database from Arkansas. Those people are asked to call their senators or go to their local offices. This is a formidable group. I have no doubt they did the same with Nelson in OK. Over 7,000 calls and contacts were made to Lincoln in a couple of days. 114% over what they expected.
People were skeptical when the group claimed they made over 300,000 calls for Healthcare in one day on Oct. 20. I too was skeptical at first, but after seeing how they operate I have no doubt this is true. And wait til you hear this. They have databases full of people who are underinsured, or have no insurance. If they want a sob story they call them and ask them to give a testimonial.
When visiting the OFA website after my experiences, the site kept bugging me to “create an account” so I did because I wanted to see what happened. After this was done, I was stunned to see what came up. A detailed list of all “events” I had attended, number of calls I had made or not made, doors knocked on etc. A very well-oiled and detailed machine.
No, we certainly cannot lightly dismiss this group. I saw their work first hand. They get 5 stars from me. And the Conservatives better start working toward getting 5 stars, or we are gonna be doomed.
Incidentally, to anyone doubting the veracity of what I say, Erick Brockway has seen the screen shots and can vouch for my credibility. The sole purpose of this post is to provide conservatives an idea of how formidable an opponent the OFA is. Under no circumstances will the screen shots be made public.

So pretty much OFA is into 'mob rule'....
reddog53 Monday, December 21st at 6:43PM EST (link)Flash mobs, phone banks and all are terrific, but they don’t provide the basis for campaign funds.
If this is the way they operate, then we need to find another more effective way to reach our ‘troops.’ Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but as S.I. Hayakawa is famous for saying: “People who say we should fight fire with fire forget that fire departments use water.”
We need to mobilize our own folks with the tools that work for them–not college kids.
We have some thinkin’ to do, but we got to do so fast!
My county went blue for the first time ever..
ladyimpactohio Monday, December 21st at 7:52PM EST (link)cuz of those “college kids.” 21K of them in university near me. I know this, because I have seen the maps of where the blue votes were concentrated. Is a no-brainer. I live in a county which is mostly a farm community and the university kids outnumber the residents. We can’t dismiss those kids. They are zealous, and O is their “knight in shining armor.”
And we really do indeed need to find a more effective way of operating. Hence the reason for this post. But you can see the results of these “flash mobs” and “phone banks.” IMO is why we are losing.
Just do not expect it to come from the RNC
rcov092 Tuesday, December 22nd at 8:23AM EST (link)voter vault was joke. Made completely ineffective by “restricting” it to only the elite in the County. In my county, I asked how many people had access (over 70 k registered Republicans), I was told 3.
The new website at the RNC seems to be developing in the same fashion as the old and I see nothing over there they could not have done with a ning community. WE are screwed from that perspective. I am working on an ititiative to bring this kind of organization to my local County REC with open source technologies. Thier is a very promising inntiative coming out of the leftist side of open source that could be of benefit to conservatives.
If you are active at the locallevel, you need to drag in some people savvy in tech especially Civicrm. Do not wait for Steele, he has a different agenda.

civil_truth Monday, December 21st at 9:38PM EST (link)You’ve painted a very frightening picture of a left, liberation movement, cult of personality evokative of Chavez or Stalin being melded with 21st century technology.
The technology and organizing methodology is designed to create a revolutionary movement that will become informers or perhaps brownshirts if necessary, but right not is sticking with mass mobilization approaches.
I would be certain that there is a committed central core who are determining policies and recruiting joiners. Most of the people are in the fellow-traveller category - used as tools and indoctrinated to be on call for action; but the leaders are carefully observing whom among these they would wish to groom for positions of power.
I’ve seen this totalitarian model operating in student/youth groups in the 70s, and we have the antecedents of Communist Youth Brigades. And by targeting our youth, they’ll clearly playing for keeps.
You’ve documented this has some very deep pockets behind it and national organization that can recruit competent and ruthless leadership.
Bottom line: this is the civilian defense force we heard about during the election, still in embryonic form, but rapidly growing and developing into a dangerous entity. The direction of this movement is not compatible with our representative Constitutional federal form of government.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention to the rising danger. And your fears appear very well-founded, especially as Ohio must be a key state to their strategy of creating a one-party nation.

And Rightly So!

Achance Wednesday, December 23rd at 12:26PM EST (link)It is good for generating interest and for pressuring the usually lily-livered politician types. It is much less good for winning elections so long as there is a decent turnout. What this stuff is really good for is running a below the radar, minimum winning coalition sort of campaign of the old Mat Reese style. You want an election to be boring and the general turnout to be low. That way, you have identified all your supporters and you work very hard by phone and email and such to make sure they vote while not doing anything to motivate anyone else to vote.
Since Republicans are usually “right” on the issues and normally will have a majority of the electorate, the Ds can’t really say out loud what they stand for, so they have to run this sort of campaign. We need better organization and much better internal communication, but we don’t need to do the same stuff the Ds do because we don’t have to hide our candidates and issues. We just have to focus on responding to the slime machine, their way of suppressing our turnout, and on actually getting out the vote.

And also to become tech-savvy and build national databases. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening in the near future.

So far though, we have Twitter and #tcot as a common fire starter to get everyone’s brush burning in the same direction, but when Twitter is down…what?

OFA is absolutely NOT Dead, and you should NOT underestimate it either...
LaborUnionReport Tuesday, December 22nd at 8:26PM EST (link)The following is excerpted from an October Truthout article [http://www.truthout.org/10210910]
Congressional switchboards were bombarded on Tuesday with over 300,000 calls from supporters of Barack Obama’s plan for health care reform….
The event was a part of a national call-in day billed as “time to deliver” by Obama’s political arm, Organizing for America (OFA). OFA is the Obama campaign transformed into a political organization that is housed in the DNC in Washington, DC.
DNC Chairman and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said that OFA is the largest department in the Democratic National Committee, with staff in 48 states. Kaine said that when he assumed the chair of the DNC, OFA was not part of the DNC, but that now it is the heart of the organization.
In the past, incumbents had begun to raise money and set their agenda for re-election early in their terms of office. The difference here is that Obama is cranking up the ground game before his first year is over. He will already have a national field campaign in full gear before the off-term elections, a move that could help him avoid the usual losses the party in the White House usually suffers. OFA may also emerge as the most powerful voice in 2016. A candidate with access to OFA’s organizational strength will have a huge leg up.

Again you should not underestimate this group.

Back in the late ’80s we had a band of insurgent malcontents in our largest union, an independent employee association. The malcontents, self-styled freedom fighters against the entrenched power of the old guard, hooked up with a big national union and ultimately were able to decertify the local association and take over. At first, the national guys let the local malcontents stay in office and act important. We wouldn’t collect dues for them and they had no money as the result, so they were totally dependent on the national for both expense money and staff salaries. Yet, the “revolutionaries” didn’t get that they really were irrelevant. They came up and demanded an audience and my then-boss was stupid enough to give them one. Of course, they came in and huffed and puffed and told us how they were going to blow our house down. I got tired of listening and told them we had no intention of doing anything with them except the bare minimum of what the law required, that we weren’t going to see them again except in formal negotiation sessions, and that we weren’t going to involve them in anything because we were certain that the national organization would take over and send them all to the outer darkness within a few weeks. Of course, they told us how stupid we were and how we’d pay for not showing them the respect they deserved. Few weeks later, we get a letter signed by obviously not written by the president informing us that all the representation duties and all negotiations will be handled by the national staff which will then designate a bargaining team from the membership. Within six months NOT ONE of the orginal orgainizing group and founding officers had any position in the union and all power was in the hands of the DC office of the national union.

ColdWarrior Wednesday, December 23rd at 6:35PM EST (link)I’ve spoken to many and recruited many to become precinct committeemen. They think going to a tea party is “being involved in politics.” When I explain the idea of getting into the Republican Party, they have no idea what a precinct committeeman is. They have no idea, although I know it’s obvious, that somehow somebody had to have elected the leaders of the Republican Party. When I ask them, “How did Michael Steele come to be the RNC Chairman, I get blank stares — they’ve never considered it. When I explain to them that it’s easy to become a PC, that HALF the slots are vacant, and that after one becomes one they can vote for the leadership and, possibly, vote to endorse conservative candidates in the primary elections, helping them win over a RINO, a light bulb goes off over their head. Well, sometimes.
The Party should be going to these tea parties and recruiting. But, of course, the incumbents are TERRIFIED of these “ruffians.” That’s why, with rare exceptions, they won’t. The incumbents, even the Mike Pences and Tom Prices and Jim DeMints and Tom Coburns won’t say a word about this to these conservative crowds.
So, I and others will keep trying to make contact with the leaders of the tea party and 9.12 and WeSurroundThem and other “patriot” groups and try to convince them to urge their members into the Republican Party as precinct committeemen.
Thank you.
