Sarah Palin and Aerial Wolf Hunting

Radical Greens/ Enviros strike again.

I received an email today from a relative berating Sarah Palin for hunting wolves from airplanes, and was urged to not vote for McCain/Palin because of this. (There are a lot of emotional Democrats in my family: I think that I am the only Republican, unless someone is keeping their mouth shut…)The link to the video is here:

Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund video

Other than the obvious issues related to this sort of email, curiousity got the better of me and I searched around for a more balanced view of this. I found this rebuttal:

Kswatcher’s Weblog

Although I abhor such hunting, especially for predators (my wife and I are dog breeders, so I have a soft spot for wolves and other wild canines) I suspected that there might be more behind this than was included in the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund video. There was…

It turns out to be a wildlife management issue in Alaska, and that the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences has an issue with how the State of Alaska is managing their wildlife resources, i.e. not doing exactly what these councils want.

Wildlike management issues are very complex, controversial, difficult and painful, for both sides alike. Usually, neither side ends up getting all that they want, but the end target should be the most humane, effective, and most cost-effective management program that can be created, meeting the goals required by the law and deemed attainable by science. But to do this, both sides have to negotiate and cooperate with this in mind. It rarely happens in practice…

The sad part is that the radical Green/Enviro crowd used this to stir up emotions on both sides in an effort to slime a Republican/Conservative… what a surprise!

Saw this posted on FiveThirtyEight and it stated that a focus group found it received one of the strongest reactions from an ad in a long time.

“Hunting” from an aircraft is, and has been illegal in Alaska for many years.

The footage you see is not hunters, but Alaskan game wardens. This happens in alot more places than Alaska. When the balance between predator and prey gets off balance, quotas must be balanced bythe game departments. These are not hunters!!!!

This is just another exammple of left wing animal rights propaganda, don’t buy it! The Alaskan fish and game regulations can be found online and you will see that it is illegal for anyone to hunt on the same day they have flown.

If you fly to Alaska to hunt, you must wait a full day before you can actually go afield.

The native Alaskans rely on moose and caribou for their very existance. These two species have taken a hard hit from bears and wolves these last couple years.

Should we protect the predators and let people starve?

The wolves in Yellowstone are no different. Those leaving the park, beginning this year, will be hunted because they are taking a toll on elk. They are simply out of balance.

Please visit www.adfg.state.ak.us and you can see for yourself this is all just a propaganda ploy to hurt Palin. it simply is not true!!!

for most game, you cannot fly and shoot on the same day. The penalty if you’re caught is you lose all the gear and your plane. The Alaska State Troopers have a very nice collection of gear, guns, snow machines, three and four wheeler, boats and airplanes confiscated for F&G violations.

They do use contract hunters rather than commissioned Fish and Wildlife Troopers, tres spendy employees, to do the predator control. Unlike other states, the ultimate predator here is man; rural Alaskans hunt to eat. The Native people’s diet is in the main from subsistence hunting, fishing, and gathering, and moose and caribou is a mainstay of that diet.

And if seeing wolves shot from a plane makes you squeamish, you ought to see a pack of wolves take a moose or a caribou. Or for that matter, you can watch a Orca teach her calf how to take a seal. The real world is a little different from Disney.
