More “help” from our federal government.

It appears that the Obama Administration is funding IT training in
Sri Lanka, specifically to help them in landing outsourcing contracts
from the U.S., to the tune of $22 million. The training will include
programming in Java EE, as well as teaching skills in business process
outsourcing, call center support, and English language proficiency.

This certainly adds to The One’s previous, well-documented
efforts at slowing down or reducing IT outsourcing. < sarcasm off > This
funding of direct competition for U.S. technical workers puts the lie
to all he has said about reducing “off-shoring” or “best shoring”, and
the bashing of the previous administration for creating tax incentives
for moving jobs overseas. This training will facilitate more movement
of tech jobs offshore.

You can read the full article here (in Information Week)
. (By the way,
the comments are entertaining…)

The funding is through USAID (United States Agency for International
Development), headed by Czar Rajiv Shah, and coming through this agency,
the money cannot be used domestically. But this begs the question: why
in the world are we (our own government!) training foreigners to take
jobs from us? We have approximately 10% official unemployment (maybe
more than 20% real unemployment) in this country! Perhaps those funds
(even the piddling amount of $22 million) could be put to better use here
at home… or, heaven forbid, perhaps we could even cut taxes a bit?

Why, in the midst of the worst economic recession since the Great
Depression, we are continuing to send our tax money out of the country,
is beyond me. Just one more reason to think seriously about your vote
in the upcoming fall elections…

The lost jobs are Bush’s fault, so they don’t count. But all the jobs created to collect our tax money and send it offshore are part of the 3M saved or created.

As long as they are “new” jobs… I hope that is not what they are thinking….

As a person who works in the IT industry and has seen job after job offshored (and whatever the term is for bringing the offshore workers here), it had me seething that Obama is not only letting jobs continue to flow offshore, he’s now having us taxpayers paying for it.

I work in the IT field too, and have been through more than 10 “best shoring” lay offs in 3 companies… I have mostly survived, or moved to less “PC” and herd-mentality companies when I saw the writing on the wall.

I have seen many good workers (some with over 20 years experience) moved on in favor of offshore, cheaper labor. And, what a surprise, the companies that did this lost enormous amounts of company-specific business experience and knowledge, and they reaped the benefits of this later… Two of three are not in business any longer, and the other was napped up by a competitor… Worked good for them, huh?

This short-term profit mentality is the bane of IT work right now.

It seems to wind up that one American is replaced by 3-4 foreigners who have 50% annual turnover. And everyone who works with them is less productive since more hand-holding is needed and knowledge is lost. Hard to see how this pays off in the long term.

Hate to say it this way – so direct – but this isn’t funding for training ‘direct competition’.

It’s funding for training permanent replacements, as the current administration is making the move to ensure that there are no jobs Americans will be allowed to do.

I just didn’t carry out the thought process that far while I was writing… Thanks for the recco!
