I have been involved in politics literally since I was 3 years old, so in my time I have seen some pretty low-life behavior on the part of politicians. I have, in fact, become so cynical about politicians in general that I thought I was no longer capable of being shocked at the behavior of any elected official anymore. I was wrong.
It turns out that there’s an elected official out there who is so colossally stupid and so cavalierly indifferent to his duties as an elected official that he somehow thought he could go completely AWOL (on a different freaking continent) for six days and no one would, you know, notice, or care to investigate where he was. Turns out there’s a governor out there who thought it was a good idea to lie to his staff, his family, his friends (including RedState), and everyone who ever worked to get him elected or advance his national stature all in the name of satisfying his libido. Turns out that Mark Sanford is guilty of the most reckless dereliction of duty and betrayal of trust it has been my displeasure to witness in decades.
I liked to joke with my colleagues behind the scenes (as recently as this morning, in fact) that no politician would ever again attempt anything so crazy as trying to have the police cover up for the fact that their wife (allegedly) hired someone to whack said politician’s favorite stripper. (Background here.) It turns out that I was wrong again. Sanford’s saga doesn’t involve any strippers being offed (that we know of, yet), but it displays perhaps a greater lack of judgment because his scheme had exponentially smaller chances of, you know, actually succeeding. Memorandum to Mark Sanford: if you are the sitting Governor of a State and you disappear for six days, people will notice. And if you disappear in a state car, it will be easy for them to find you if they are so inclined. Thing is, if you have ever spoken with Mark Sanford or heard him speak, you know that he is smart enough to know all these things all on his own. A man who allows his judgment to be subsumed to the whims of his genitals to this extent has no business being dogcatcher, let alone governor.
But what really takes the cake here is not the appalling lack of judgment and moral character, it’s the dereliction of duty. You know what? *I* can’t disappear entirely from my job for six days, even if I give advance notice. I get to take the crackberry with me and check in to make sure no fires crop up. And if I ever was gone for six days without notice and returned with any other explanation besides “marooned at sea,” I’d return to a desk with someone else’s family pictures on top of it. And I’m just a lowly attorney at a relatively small firm. And I get that some people don’t want to live their lives that way, but such people do not (or at least should not) run for freaking Governor.
Mark Sanford, you have betrayed your family, your friends, your constituents, your supporters, and God, all for basically nothing. You have proven to be the slimiest member of a barrel that is filled with some pretty slimy characters. If you have a decent bone left in your body, resign immediately and hopefully we can soon permanently move past news cycles featuring either your face or your name. Goodbye and good riddance.

DNC has been watching....

Same here. It's not working for the Democrats.
farstar99 Thursday, June 25th at 2:59PM EDT (link)This little ACORN International chippy he was sleeping with may be the only one to get any benefit out of this.
And what if the DNC was watching?
Brian Faughnan Wednesday, June 24th at 9:44PM EDT (link)Did Sanford really think he could park a government car at an airport, go through ticketing, catch a flight to Argentina, get his passport stamped, walk around Buenos Aires for a week or so, take another international flight, clear Customs, and head back home… and no one would ever notice?
There was no possible way he could have kept this a secret. Someone would have seen him and recognized him. Even if he managed all this without it getting in the papers, someone close to him was bound to learn of the trip and leak it. Eventually, he would have been forced to fess up.
It takes an incredible level of stupidity - or willful blindness - to think this could have worked. If the DNC knew of it for example, they would sit on the information until next year.
I am still not sold...
jenest2001 Wednesday, June 24th at 9:50PM EDT (link)That the DNC didn’t have it on him. Not to be a alarmist, but they have had people following RNC people to get information. Newt had the privilidge himself and they exposed his extramarital experience.
The problem is we have to realize they are going to neutralize people as soon as they can. Level it and they won’t have any adversaries. No reason to wait until 2012.
We have to think harder here…they are way ahead of us on all planes.
In a way, we should be thankful.
ciscoguy Wednesday, June 24th at 10:07PM EDT (link)In this day in age, we need candidates with spotless records. The left controls the news cycle - do you want them sitting on this information until October 2012? No thanks. If John Edwards had been the Dem candidate leading up to the election, you can be damn sure the media would have buried his story until the election was over.
We aren't playing on the same field...
jenest2001 Wednesday, June 24th at 10:21PM EDT (link)We are coming at this from a value system…integrity, loyalty, trust, etc…
This is definitelynot the DNC mantra.
As hard as it is, we have to think from the opposite standpoint. If we continue to fire from our value system, we are going to lose, and lose very badly. There is a way to be virtuous and correct, but it is a coordinated and very targeted effort.
Unfortunately, we have to think as to the worst and react to the worser…very bad english, but sums it up. We as conservatives are not equipped to act in evil ways.
Which is exactly why this party is going extinct
rexpopuli Wednesday, June 24th at 10:23PM EDT (link)Because if people were perfect, they’d be called “angels,” not “humans.” Yes a blameless life is possible — but a national party full of blameless representatives? C’mon. If the Dems can accept reformed characters in their own flock, we’d be pretty stupid not to allow the same in ours.
We just have to come up with a more distinct plan....
jenest2001 Wednesday, June 24th at 10:43PM EDT (link)Neutraliziing them is a strategy we can do once we figure out how to centralize it. This is will need to become the new conservative plan….it can be figured out out in Atlanta. This is not going to be hard….we just need to be all on the same response page.
What's with "this party is going extinct"?
Flagstaff Wednesday, June 24th at 11:31PM EDT (link)It’s still very much alive and growing again. And this isn’t a party problem, anyway. It’s a problem with one politician. He isn’t being drummed out of the party. It’s up to him whether he resigns as Governor or doesn’t (it appears he didn’t steal or lie under oath while in office), but it would be better for both him and the party if he simply resigned and disappeared. He isn’t indispensable in the party sense.
I disagree that we have to run “spotless” candidates, but their spots shouldn’t be acquired while in office or running for the next one.
Nobody expects anybody to be perfect, and to claim that is to introduce one of the oldest straw men around. But it isn’t unreasonable to expect someone to clean up his own mess in a way that makes things better for as many as possible.

DONTREADONME Wednesday, June 24th at 10:24PM EDT (link)I am glad you are willing to fight through this.
I probably should be willing to stand on the same logic you are right now, but these kinds of things just kind of take the wind out of the sail. Especially when we were actually starting to have some promise of actually being able to stop the garbage that is up for a vote this week. We probably just lost the ability of the real issue to be discussed this week due to the top of the hour news being about Mark Sanford. It does just allow that sense of defeatism enter into the equation. We will kick out of this I am sure, but I have lost some vigor over this.

And I *Get* Why People Are Mad, DTOM...
IJB Wednesday, June 24th at 10:30PM EDT (link)Some people have suffered *personally* from this kind of betrayal.
Some people had a lot invested in Sanford’s political career (I’m pretty much one of them).
And the timing of this sucks.
But taking the political blinders off for a second, this is basically a guy who lost his way. “Lost it” for a while, so to speak.
It happens. We all know someone it’s happened to. You get mad at that guy(gal). Curse at them. And then you think about everything that went into what happened.
If Sanford actually broke laws or misappropriated funds, I’ll be calling for his head too.
But, if this is just a guy who had an all too ‘human’ moment, I’m sorry, I’m not going to throw him on The Pile(tm) because a few people demand it. Sanford is too valuable as an overall political commodity.
IJB...
DONTREADONME Wednesday, June 24th at 10:45PM EDT (link)I think I agree with you on point, but I guess I am still in that, What the Hell were you thinking, mentality. It will pass, because we have very detrimental legislation coming up for a vote this week.
You know people get divorced all of the time in the work place; however, you usually do not know who is at fault for it, so I usually can not make comment. In this case, he cheated on his wife, kind of lost some respectability in my book; therefore Mr Sanford political career is over. All I ask is that another is ready to jump up and fill the position immediately. Do not fault me for not wanting to here his name again after this day for political office. BTW, I defended this guy yesterday against the hopped up media reports, today I look like a real jacka$$, not quite the fun feeling.
Lastly, IJB, this will probably be the only day that I will address this situation, we have other things to work on, plus I have Jacka$$ down below here that is here to pee on my boxwoods, time to throw some shoes at it.

MrsNachos Wednesday, June 24th at 11:19PM EDT (link)He’s a representative of the people. He gets paid to be that and do that. He took days off and lied about what he was doing. It was, in effect, lying to the boss. People get fired for it all the time.
The best tactic to take is to hit him on the nose like a dog and then shun him because he doesn’t represent what we are looking for in a leader. Period. I think this post does that.
Everyone has human moments. That doesn’t mean that the way he went about this represents me. I look for a leader. He’s old enough to be past a “mid life crisis” and to say that “everyone” has one is a fallacy.

Come on; Sanford didn’t pull the whole “I’m so sorry, please forgive me” thing until he got caught. Flagrante, as it were.
I’m not buying the crocodile tears today. After all, he was just in Buenos Friggin’ Ares for five days with Senorita “Curve of your Hip”! He high-tailed it home because he checked in and found out that the story was about to break. And suddenly he’s apologizing.
Uh huh.
Mark Sanford did EXACTLY what he wanted to do. He’s sorry he got caught. I hope it was worth it to him. Pity his wife and his sons didn’t get a choice about what it’s worth to them.

Dave_in_Fla Thursday, June 25th at 10:30AM EDT (link)Sanford’s political aspirations are appropriately over and he resigned leadership of the RGA. However, unless he broke a law he shouldn’t resign, just like Ensign shouldn’t resign.
Regardless of how we may personally feel about it, adultery isn’t illegal. I would bet a very large sum of money that at least 25% of our GOP elected officials have had affairs at some point in their lives.
It is exactly this kind of firestorm that keeps them from dealing with the problem in a mature manner that avoids destruction of their families. If you are in the GOP and succumb to temptation, you have no options other than burying it and hoping it never comes to light. I’ve talked to enough marriage counsellors over the years to know that that is the wrong approach if you are trying to save your marriage.
Personally, I think the reason that Sanford is getting 3 front page posts with hundreds of comments, while Ensign got barely a peep, is because a lot of you were personally invested in him. You were ready to paste the Sanford 2012 bumper stickers on the car.

DONTREADONME Wednesday, June 24th at 9:55PM EDT (link)I really do. He expressed my feelings on the Governor we do not mention succinctly. You know I really do not want to hear his excuse for why he did it, because it is something that I know in my heart I could never do to my wife and family. I can not believe that the thought of shame he would bring his family for a the lust he had for this woman, sorry I know that was conjecture.
Is 5 minutes of lust worth the lifetime of guilt? Anytime you consider infidelity think about that, is five minutes of lust (sex) worth the guilt you will feel when you go home and look at your beautiful wife and family? I know the guilt my soul would feel for that betrayal, and I know that I am weak and possibly unable to forgive my wife is she should so betray me.
What makes this 20x worse, IMO, is that it was not just the betrayal of your family, it was that you let the millions of constituents, defenders and admirers down. We thought you had a chance at being a leader, but you chose to be selfish.
You chose to be selfish when you decided that what you wanted what YOUR lust was telling you to pursue over what you knew to be right. Listen, Mr. Sanford, you talked the talk so I must assume you knew that what you were doing was wrong. Unfortunately, by acting on this desire, you have shown yourself to be untrustworthy.
How so, you may ask, simple you sacrificed the trust of your wife and familiy. A man who would abandon the feelings and trust of his family for his own selfish reasons can not be trusted as a leader. How much is your constituency worth, Mr. Sanford because it appears your loved ones were worth the feeling you got when you were with this other woman. Can I trust you now, I can not; therefore, I am glad I do not have to ask you to step down as Governor of SC because I am not part of your electorate.
Can I forgive you? Yes, I can forgive you, but do not ever expect me to trust you. I suspect I am not alone in my opinion and I expect many of your constituents do desire for you to leave the office of the Governor of SC because now you are trully unable or fit to fulfill your duties. Of course this is my opinion and you have your electorate to contend with.
I am thoroughly disappointed in you.

Bill Clinton and JFK’s affairs in office hurt America due to the distractions from their duties. He even admitted the affair to his wife, expecting her to do the dirty work of dumping him….which she eventually did, after haver her fill of his cowardice and dishonesty.
Sanford, in ” the way he went into detail about his regard for his married mistress and his refusal to say the affair is over…” displayed a similar cravenness and lack of judgement, and if he shouldn’t leave his wife, then he should at the very least leave his office, as you say.

But, even with all that, I really think this will recede into the background fairly quickly. Think about it, does anyone really care anymore about Spitzer or Edwards? Yes, I know they are Democrats, but Larry Craig is now just barely remembered “wide-stance” joke and the coverage of Ensign pretty much stopped after less than a week. Lust is what is confused with love, it is that flighty feeling that you get around a really gorgeous woman, that light feeling in your loafers and that misconception that you are in love.
This is not always love, rather most of the time it isn’t. Why do you think that many people who marry quickly after meeting seem to end up falling on hard times in the relationship in the first year or two? Love is not that feeling, it is lust be careful to know the difference because lust will get you burned.
Love is a conscientious decision, it comes with care, understanding, and forgiveness. Lust comes with sex, turn-ons, superficiality and convenience. You may not agree with me, but there is truth that love works through all of the bad times without deviation, and yes years of a relationship could be hard but you made your commitment to prove you will not succumb to your innermost animal instincts, which is often misinterpreted as love when it is purely lust.
Acquantances I do not hold to higher standard, friends and family I do, and I especailly have higher expectation of the people I vote for, because my vote is worth more than what I am seeing.

DONTREADONME Wednesday, June 24th at 11:54PM EDT (link)30 years, excellent! I bet you could never imagine another woman in your life. I could not imaging another woman other than my wife. Tough times seem to be the common theme among all married couples that have made it 50 years + like my grandparents. They told me that there were times that things in the relationship got really rocky, this is even so with my parents; however, they never deviated from each other. I always appreciate couples together for that long.
From the board I was beginning to believe I was in the minority opinion in my romanticisim.

My wife is a Registered Nurse who is the most caring person I have ever met.
I told her once that I don’t know what I ever do to deserve her.
She said, “It must have been pretty bad”.
There’s nothing wrong with being a romantic. Once in a while it’s good to step back and realize just how much a part of your life your spouse is and what life alone would be like. it’s hard to imagine.

mom2oneson Wednesday, June 24th at 11:38PM EDT (link)People do foolish things when love doesn’t go right too, like with a break up or rejection or divorce. I think a lot of people do this stuff as older teens in their early 20s so maybe we forget when it happens to an older person. Emotion and being in love or feeling heartbroken can really be overwhelming.

mom2oneson Thursday, June 25th at 12:41AM EDT (link)Do you think something happened to him and he is trying to deal with it? I’ve know with some friends in similar situations they were dealing with some traumatic, like a baby dying from SIDs, a parent’s death, their spouse leaving, a long term relationshp ending, and they were in grief, and they used poor judgement putting themselves in a situation to be alone with a man but they were vulnerable to the first creep willing to give them a shoulder. I wonder if something
happened to him.
Online psychanalysis is worth about what you pay for it.
AKSteveB Thursday, June 25th at 1:33AM EDT (link)and it is really out of the realm of a political site.
I have no idea what happened or why. In human terms, relationships are a funny thing. *Nobody* outside of them really has a clue what goes on between 2 people, heck the people themselves are lucky to understand. Politically, whatever did happen has brought him to a point where he is non functional in doing his job. That part of it is the business of the citizens of South Carolina, and it is our business in the sense that we saw him as an important part of the conservative movement.
This whole thing is interesting in what it says about where our culture is now. We have few constraints on sex, relationship choices etc than we once did, and I suppose that is all well and good. The downside of that even for those who don’t have moral objections, is that we’ve lost a lot of the “don’t ask don’t tell” space. Now everything is supposed to be open. We have a lot of choices but one choice we no longer have is to just look away. Sometimes freedom ain’t so free.
Hell is other people - Sartre
Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.
Achance Thursday, June 25th at 5:53AM EDT (link)As I get older I’ve come to admire Kris Kristopherson as a philosopher. The freedom in relationships and attitudes that the left so worships is really a juvenile and dependent view of life. When you have nothing that you have striven for, worked for, you are free to risk all, abandon all. The essence of a conservative habit of mind is that you have something to lose by your own or by another’s actions. In essence, conservatives are not free to act on their whims and impulses because they have somethign to lose by acting rashly or wrongly.
I ain’t going to get all righteous about Sanford’s affair; any man in power who hasn’t had one was just scared - see having something to lose above. It’s truly amazing how sexy your balding, pot-bellied self becomes when your name is on the door! I will get real righteous about how damnably stupid it was. The guy’s a Presidential contender and also has real enemies in his state. Sorry, fellow, you ain’t getting any strange without somebody ratting you out, and if you’re not smart enough to know that, you have no business in a leadership position of ANY kind.

All, my employment/position and infidelity...
DONTREADONME Wednesday, June 24th at 11:48PM EDT (link)Everyone wonders why fidelity is important in a public position. Well when you are in a position that grants you a huge amount of trust, authority and responsibility you must consider your actions. Illegal activities, infidelity, and unethical behavior can corrupt your position and standing.
Why is my position important? I have been granted a huge amount of trust by the people of the United States through my adherence to my responsibility to maintain quiet on secret and confidential material that I have been granted access to. I can not jeopardize this information due to my infidelity, illegal or unethical behavior. These actions can put me in a position to be manipulated or blackmailed. This goes for your public officials as well. If I must maintain my intergrity to prevent those secrets from being divulged as a result of me being placed in a compromised position then I will have to suffer the consequences. These consequences range from loss of employment due to a breach of confidentiality which will follow me to all positions there after, imprisonment, huge fines and possibly death under treason.
So that said, Mark Sanford is not the Presidentof the United States however, I am not a public official who has more trust, authority and responsibility than I have; therefore, I have to frown upon the actions of the Governor because I see his actions as very poor judgement and an action of untrustworthyness. Remember, I would never get a secret or top secret clearance if I have to admit to being unfaithful to my wife. I hope this clears up everything I have said and gives you an idea of why I find his actions deplorable.

And now for some heartless political analysis
Samsara Thursday, June 25th at 2:30AM EDT (link)I watched Rove on Hannity tonight.
After making the obligatory “he done wrong” remarks, Rove did his best to spin this away from the GOP. He observed that unlike Mark Spitzer, Gov. Sanford didn’t parade his wife or pay for the sex. Fair enough, but David Vitter did both those things and is running for reelection in 2010. Vitter was still leading in recent polls, but if Roves talking point is echoed it will hurt his chances.
As to Sanford resigning, Republicans in South Carolina were in revolt before this mess. Democrats are Democrats. What does this mess change for him? He has one more year, and unless he wants to do a stint on “Survivor Argentina” he will just hunker down.
Amen, Leon!!
Trelaina Thursday, June 25th at 5:33AM EDT (link)Leaving for 6 days for a “hike” was strange enough, but this?
And for the record, I’m sick to DEATH of all these comments about how “everyone fails” and “everyone breaks”, etc. Sick to DEATH of it.
Yes, everyone “fails”. We lie to others now and then. We hate when we shouldn’t hate. We make mistakes.
This is more than a failure - more than a mistake. This is a betrayal of solumn vows made to another human being. Willingly. Defiantly.
Mrs. Sanford has a few decisions to make. I leave that totally up to her without suggestion, and I hope her family and friends support her no matter what her choices. But to say that this is a simple failure or mistake is to make this seem like a small thing. Breaking your marriage vows is NOT a small thing.

Politics1001 Thursday, June 25th at 6:52AM EDT (link)Are Americans putting unreasonable expectations on their politicians? Obama is not going to live up to the expectations of his supporters. And conservative politicians probably aren’t going to live up to the expectations of their followers. Conservatives need to look to priests to run for office. (um, on second thought maybe not).
If we put your life under a microscope i think everyone would be found guilty of breaking a few commandments from the bible, and everyone would be found to have broken some laws during this probe. I throw recycling waste in the regular garbage, i am guilty of speeding, i steal by downloading music for free online, little things of course.
In Europe, a sex scandal involving a politician would not make the news! Burlesconi of Italy is now denying he paid for sex, nobody cares. In Europe and most of the rest of the world, politicians are expected to be corrupt, liars, scumbags; and when the politician ends up proving that he has morality people are pleasantly surprised. I think in the US, Americans should take the same approach. Expect them to fail, and make politicians earn your trust (or your trust that they are competent enough not to get caught).
I agree with Leon that the way this guy went about his business is shocking, he acted with such arrogance that he deserves to be punished (pay back taxpayer money, possibly resign, etc. . .)

Why our inconsistency?
Bob_Frazier Thursday, June 25th at 8:51AM EDT (link)I think its safe to say that most people commenting on Mr. Sanford have taken a “social conservative” point of view on this. Had no idea we had so many social conservatives on this site. But to resign because of adultery? I believe that is a bit over the top.
We blame the demoncrats for being hypocrites on this issue, but what about us? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t John McCain admit to cheating on a spouse and in general being a philanderer, and yet we nominated him for president in 2008. Didn’t Newt Gingrich admit to the same thing, cheating on one of his spouses? So why was it ok to nominate McCain for president, and to consider Gingrich in 2012, but Sanford now should resign the governorship over adultery and forget a run for the presidency?
If you want to make the argument that he “abandoned” his state for a week, that is something else. But that is not what really seems to have everybody’s anger up. Why the inconsistency?
Lets stop destroying our own. I suspect I am more socially conservative than 90% of red state contributors, but I am frankly sick of our inconsistency and our quick reaction to destroy our own. The destruction of Trent Lott for trying to say something nice to a man who was dying on his last birthday was the last straw for me. This insanity has to end. Lets stop it here.
