Second Poll Confirms Crist’s Lead Dissolving

Erick covered the Q-Poll showing that Charlie Crist’s once-formidable lead over Marco Rubio had been more than cut in half.  Today, the bad news for the Crist Campaign continued as Rasmussen released a poll confirming that Rubio has shaved more than 20 points off Crist’s lead. The poll also confirmed that Crist’s support is very soft and that his lead is due almost entirely to unfamiliarity with Rubio:

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely GOP Primary voters in the state finds Crist outdistancing Rubio 49% to 35%. Four percent (4%) like some other candidate, and 12% are undecided.

***

The fact that Crist has fallen below 50% in a primary against a lesser known opponent suggests potential vulnerability.

***

Twenty-three percent (23%) of GOP Primary voters have a very favorable opinion of Crist, while 13% view him very unfavorably.

Rubio is viewed very favorably by 21% and very unfavorably by just three percent (3%). But 23% of primary voters don’t know enough about the Cuban-American politician from Miami to express even a soft opinion of him.

At this very early stage of the campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the very favorable and very unfavorable figures more significant than the overall favorability totals. The GOP Primary is scheduled for August 24 of next year.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of GOP Primary voters at least somewhat approve of the job Crist is doing as governor, while 42% disapprove. Fourteen percent (14%) strongly approve, and 16% strongly disapprove. Those numbers are not terribly strong for an incumbent Governor in his own party.

Folks, remember two things. First, both Crist and Rubio poll equally well against the likely Democratic opponent. Second, when the pollsters first started examining this race, Crist held a lead of between 35-40 points. The conventional wisdom was that Crist would flood the state with money and Rubio’s candidacy would be suffocated and unable to get off the ground.  Five short months later, all but 15 points of that lead has evaporated and as people come to know Rubio, he continues to make inroads on Crist’s soft support.

Folks, as people come to know Marco, they become more willing to vote for him, but he needs your help to make that happen.  Send Marco a donation, whatever you can afford, to help make that happen.  Remember, if we do not defeat Charlie Crist in the primary, we will just end up sending a “Republican” who is a rubber stamp for President Obama’s economic policies to Washington:

Crist has never had deep support

RedBeard Thursday, October 22nd at 11:50AM EDT (link)

Judging by the people I talk with, Crist is where he is because he is a familiar name, not because people are devoted to him.

This thin support is fragile indeed, particularly when his challenger is gathering steam at such a rate.

I have brought Rubio to the attention of a number of voters, and the results are consistent. Lack of familiarity with Rubio is the only thing that needs rectifying. Once people start paying attention to him, the end result is positive. And that isn’t making Crist’s camp happy.

So send money to Rubio. Get his name and message out there in front of all the voters, and he will win this thing.

Christ is definitely a RINO. He has not been a strong leader, but, of course, he has had favorable press.

I am unsure as to why the RNC has endorsed him. He was open in his support of Obama, and also, that he would have supported the stimulus. He is not business friendly.

Mr. Rubio is fairly well known in southern Florida, but needs more name recognition, I think, in the central and northern parts of Florida.

It is rather interesting that I am now hearing Charlie Crist commercials on conservative radio that STRESS how conservative Mr. Crist is. And how fiscally responsible he is. I think his commerial quotes that the Heritage Foundation ranked him as #1 governor. hmmmmmmmm

He has deep pockets and bought his support from the NRSC

Cornyn was open about it…his ideology doesn’t matter…his reliablility doesn’t matter…the fact that he could self fund is the reason the NRSC jumped on his bandwagon all the while dumping on Rubio.

I’m just sitting here laughing half in amusement and half in frustration as I remember all the folks at Red State who attacked those of us who jumped on the Rubio wagon early as traitors and fools for thinking Rubio had a chance and for breaking with the Party…

Of course those who jumped on me and others are banging the Rubio drum just as loudly now!

Glad to have em on board but the same bunch are still labeling me as unfaithful and a trouble maker

Convenient huh?

I wish there was a way to calcualate

just how much “self-funded” candidates have cost the RNC, NRCC and NRSC in the last few cycles. If I had to bet I’d say it was an order of ten.

Lost donations from base = 10 x self-funded candidates contribution

Who were these mysterious "people at RedState"?

Leon H. Wolf Thursday, October 22nd at 3:45PM EDT (link)

And do you have links to their comments? It certainly wasn’t anyone on the front page. We’ve been training full fire on Crist since day one.

They’re *illusions*, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money. Or candy!

I didn't mean to include the front pagers in that...

AceInTX Thursday, October 22nd at 5:38PM EDT (link)

…I took a pretty good beating for going after Cornyn when they jumped on the Crist bandwagon with NRSC funds…

I know you were on this from the beginning as was Erick in favor of Rubio and It wasn’t my intention to single out the site as a whole and apologize if you took it that way…I should have been more specific by saying “certain members at Red State”.

I don’t want to call anyone else out personally or by name since it is Red State Policy that it not be done but the evidence is there if you want to go looking for it…I’d provide the threads but I don’t know how to search for my individual comments any more since we switched over from the old system.

Let me walk this back a little more....

AceInTX Thursday, October 22nd at 6:24PM EDT (link)

I’ve gone back and reviewed from last spring when this broke and I think I’m convoluted this specific instance with other arguments I’ve had concerning other similar endorsements by the party or the NRSC. From what I can find in the review…the condemnation on the Crist endorsement seems to have been pretty universal.

There is one thread that I can’t find and can only quote from memory which I thought was associated with this issue and it went along the lines of whether I was attacking the party as a whole when I had specifically focused my fire on the NRSC alone. the discussion was pretty heated and the individual that characterized my position in it acted in bad faith IMHO…

I know I can be controversial because I have strong views and I defend them full bore but hope I get credit when I admit a mistake…in this case such admission appears to be warranted.

Please accept my sincerest apologies

Heard the commercial this morning…it’s the Cato Institute that ranked him as #1 governor.

charpaddy-I was not Heritage it was the Cato Institiute

nelsa Thursday, October 22nd at 3:18PM EDT (link)

Crist is running scared and finds the wind-sock pointing towards the center. That is where he is running to but it wont work.

This the most massive grassroots effort to elect Marco Rubio that I have ever seen in Florida and it is only now building momentum.

Here is a link to the Crist commercial that mentions the Cato Instidtute
and an official response from the Rubio campaign:
