Crist Campaign Hemorrhaging Staff

First, Charlie Crist squandered a safe GOP Governor’s mansion in order to advance his vain and futile Presidential ambitions. Then, he squandered a lead of over 30 points in the polls to Marco Rubio, who was almost a total unknown, despite being flush with enough cash from out-of-state donors to completely flood the airwaves. Then, his personal firewall, state GOP chair Jim Greer, was taken down in flames by party activists angry (in part) over his support for Crist. Now, the polls consistently show him facing double-digit deficits and an opponent who is dominating the conservative vote in a Republican primary.

If you’ve ever watched a campaign quickly catch fire and implode before, you know the next two steps before even reading them. First, ridiculously overconfident bragadoccio. Cue Charlie Crist:

Next? Campaign staff fleeing the sinking ship, of course:

In the latest sign of turbulence for Charlie Crist’s wounded U.S. Senate bid, key staffers are starting to leave the campaign.

Political director Pablo Diaz, one of the first two staff members hired for the Senate campaign, is departing at the end of the month for “a new opportunity.” Sean Doughtie, a well-regarded new media consultant who had worked with Crist for years, stopped working for the campaign at the end of January.

“The campaign was going in a different direction,” said Doughtie.

The writing is on the wall in the GOP primary: Crist is toast. If Crist actually stays in the primary until after the vote, he knows he can’t run third party under Florida law. The only remaining question at this point is how soon he drops out and whether he decides to show that true moderate cooperative spirit and run third party in order to sabotage the GOP candidate.

Naaaaah, not really. He deserves everything he’s getting.

but losing your yard sign kid and web designer is barely hemorrahaging…both campaigns have lost staff along the way.

    • Leon H. Wolf

Is the “yard sign kid” referred to in your comment?

      • fsured

is not exactly a well-oiled machine. This becomes a real story when Crist’s fundraising staff start leaving.

        • Darin_H

considering he successfully ran for governor just 4 years ago….

          • fsured

wasn’t exactly stellar. Florida elections are won and lost on tv. Still, bottom line, Rubio is kicking Charlie’s rear-end up and down the field right now.

The Florida Republican primary will go down in history as an epic battle between the ESTABLISHMENT and THE PEOPLE. It’s already pretty clear who wins. Are you listening Republicans?

    • GenEarly

As a Florida registered Republican I have met the establishment republicans and they are as nasty as democrats when faced or now forced to accept conservative ideals. These establishment RINO’s are in my local county commission (Pinellas County) and you should hear them wail and moan over having to cut the annual 1.9 BILLION county budget!!! It is so tragic! County workers may have to lose their jobs and private citizens haven’t? 12% unemployment in this area. Jobs lost almost always are Deputy Sheriffs and people who do the work rather than administrators making $150,000 +.
CHARLIE CRIST as govenor has followed the CA. Arnold PLan of using the 1 time stimulus to balance 1 year of the state’s budget. Next year when Crist had planned on escaping to the US Senate: Florida Crashes!

    they endorse the Democrat

I wouldn’t put it past Crist to put a D behind his name if he thinks it will help salvage his political fortunes.

That whole Obama-hugging thing hasn’t really worked out very well for you, has it?

    • voxoreason

Glenn Beck did a show this week beginning with pols who can look you right in the eye and lie to you. Obama, Nixon, Bush I, and Clinton were shown, caught in the act… on TV.

When Crist was talking about the polls, I remembered Beck’s show.

If I don’t see you, you’re not really there?

Possibly, but not how I would bet.

  • paulnashtn

I think, after(or b4) the primary, he will pull a Dede Scozzafava and endorse the dem.

    • GenEarly

He may very well drop out and run as an “independent” and then use his millions in the general election. That way if he wins with democrat support in the general he can bid himself out to the highest bidder party to caucus with in the senate. Just remember “It’s ALL about Charlie”, not the people of Florida.

      • RedBeard

Misguided, squishy, out of touch, rudderless, but not that low down.

        I hope.
