New HotAir/Townhall Poll: Trump in the Lead, Hillary in Trouble

HotAir and Townhall have released their very first jointly commissioned scientific poll of the 2016 race. There are a number of findings that are surprising in both the Republican and Democratic fields. First, on the Republican side, the HotAir/Townhall poll shows Trump with a comfortable lead, like all other polls that have been taken recently. Trump pulls in around 24%, whereas the next contender (Carson) is at 8%. “Undecided” still leads the field with 30.34%, as you might expect in a year with a volatile field filled with excellent candidates.

Trump leads, as you might expect, among independents, and also among Republicans. In virtually every category of polled Republicans, Trump continues to hold a comfortable lead.

The biggest surprise in this poll on the GOP side is that it shows Scott Walker having fallen to 11th, although he is still statistically tied with the rest of the “behind Trump” field.

The biggest surprise is on the Democrat side, where Hillary Clinton’s lead over Bernie Sanders has shrunk to only 6%, when only Democrats are included in the poll. When both Democrats and independents are included, Bernie Sanders actually leads. It is perhaps no wonder that Hillary today broke with her campaign strategy and took extended questions from the press in Minneapolis at her meeting with the DNC. Clearly, the email scandal is hurting her campaign as voters increasingly see her lack of honesty as a liability.
