This is going to go over very well in the general election, I am sure. ABC News has released an interview they conducted with Trump in 1994 where he discussed his failed marriages with Ivana Trump and Marla Maples. Everyone is focused on the part where Trump said “putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing,” but in the context of Ivana, what he specifically said was that it was a problem having his wife go to work for him, and that this dynamic was the cause of the disintegration of their marriage.

That’s a perfectly fair point, and many marriages would suffer quite a lot of strain from one spouse being in a supervisory position over the other in a professional environment, so I’m inclined to give him a pass. I think the far more damaging remarks were the ones Trump made about Maples:

But his disapproval of working wives extended beyond hiring them himself; he said that there were times (dinnertime, in particular) when he found his then-wife Maples’ employment problematic.

“I have days where I think [Maples’ job is] great. And then I have days where, if I come home — and I don’t want to sound too much like a chauvinist — but when I come home and dinner’s not ready, I go through the roof,” he said.

Yeeeeeesh. Of course, I’m at a loss as to why Trump, who was allegedly one of the richest men in the world at that point, required Maples to make his dinner specifically other than that he simply wanted to see her working in the kitchen. Surely he could have afforded a live-in chef or just gotten one of those amazing taco salads from the Wendy’s in Trump Tower, right?
