Trump's Endorsement of Ellmers Says More about Trump Than Her Loss

Renee Ellmers suffered a humiliating and well-deserved loss in her North Carolina primary last night. When an incumbent only gets about 25% of the vote, you know she has worked very hard to make everyone in her district hate her, and Ellmers has certainly done that.

Many are focusing on the fact that Trump’s endorsement of Ellmers – who has loudly supported Trump – shows that Trump does not swing weight with GOP primary voters. That is definitely true. But by far the most salient point about this whole sorry charade is what Trump’s endorsement of Ellmers says about Trump.

See, Ellmers got swept into office on almost exactly the same sentiment that Trump rode to the GOP nomination – frustration with Washington, stupidity of leadership, the desire for an outsider fresh face. She promised the moon to her constituents in terms of what she would do and be once she got into office. She swore she would be an amazing conservative who would straighten up the mess in Washington.

However, once she got there, she immediately betrayed everything she ran on. She became one of the most prominent toadies for the ineffective crony capitalist House leadership. Whenever leadership wants to announce something significant that involves all of them being in front of the camera, they like to bring a token woman along. Perhaps no one was more willing to bow and scrape for that role than Renee Ellmers (except possibly Marsha Blackburn, whose turn is coming soon).

Since she’s gotten to Washington, she’s been terrible on spending. She’s been terrible on trade, which is to say that she agrees with Donald Trump’s ignorant view of economics. She’s been terrible on doing anything to check the abuses of the Obama administration. She’s done nothing to challenge leadership when they balked at fulfilling promises to conservatives. And she (along with Blackburn) stabbed pro-lifers in the back at a critical moment in time, handing the pro-abortion cause a rhetorical victory that it will take us years to overcome.

And this record was the first one Donald Trump looked at and said, “I need that kind of person to stand with me in Congress if I win.”

Folks, that tells you all you need to know about what kind of President Trump will be if elected. He cares nothing for anything he has promised you and will betray it all. And he will expect you to accept it with a smile. Just like he expected Renee Ellmers’ voters to do the same.
