Dressing Down Sarah Palin

A dysfunctional media obsession to destroy Palin

Politico reports the RNC disclosed expenditures of over $150,000 for outfitting Sarah Palin and her family. On cue, the media and blogs go on their attack Sarah Palin frenzy de jour. No context, no balance, just a dysfunctional need to conjure negatives on Sarah Palin. I believe we’ve hit yet another low in politics and the bias and unfairness is undeniable. Here’s how I got there. (apologies to Glenn Beck)

First — It was RNC spending, not the McCain campaign or Palin. Why attack her? She didn’t do or violate anything

Second — Palin was thrust into the national spotlight. Neither her nor her family was prepared for this level of instant exposure. Who can ever be prepared for our presidential campaign circus? To put it in context; have you ever been stressed about an impending public situation where you didn’t have the appropriate wardrobe? Multiply that times a thousand for Sarah’s situation. The RNC prudently provided the appropriate wardrobe for a candidate and family not used to this level of exposure. One only has to look at Palin’s released tax returns to see that she and her family, likely, do not have the means to outfit themselves for national prime time events every night. Who does? Perhaps that’s why her entry into this race resonates with so many people. She is Joe the Plumber.

Third — The RNC has stated “on the record” that this was not a gift. Just as the bunting, posters, and signs are presentation stagecraft, so are Palin’s outfits. Nobody has ever questioned the cost of flag bunting. It is the RNC’s duty to put forth the best image it can just as it is the DNC’s.

Finally — This smacks of unfairness. Let’s hold everyone to the same standard. As Drudge just reported, the Obama campaign has disclosed spending of $437,144 on meals. Why not outrage here? To follow the logic that is used against Palin, shouldn’t Obama’s campaign merely have provided rice and beans for their workers? It’s nutritious, healthy and cheap. It would have clearly displayed that Obama is not an elitist. Pretty silly, huh?

I haven’t even touched the implications of bias against women. That’s a “third rail” issue. Hillary knows all about that.

Just because the media can go into the gutter, it does not mean they should. They garner no credibility if they do not assess the weight and real relevance of a story. McCain and Obama have real differences on important issues. How about reporting on that? America, wants it. But, if the media still feels the need to go tabloid, at least balance the coverage. They should to apply their own “fairness doctrine” of professional journalistic behavior. Quit dressing down Sarah Palin for nothing but sensationalism to achieve ratings. If you want to report on her, report on her stand on the issues. Something it looks like you choose not to do. What, she’s too normal for you?

Because they are afraid of Sarah

ILLINOIS_CONSERV Wednesday, October 22nd at 4:05PM EDT (link)

They just plain do not get it. They don’t understand her appeal. They don’t understand her love of God, family, and country. And what they don’t know or understand, they fear.

Didn’t I read somewhere that Michelle was given a stylist, etc?

This ranks in the…I don’t care file.

Palin and Co., should receive an allowance for clothing.

Palin

They just don’t get it. The more they attack her, the stronger she becomes with her base.

Plus there's the fact that almost nothing

Achance Wednesday, October 22nd at 5:34PM EDT (link)

she would wear here in Alaska is really appropriate in most of the Lower 48 and vice versa. That’s even more true for Todd and the kids.

It’s in the mid-40s, raining hard, and with wind gusts to 40+ here in Juneau today. Anchorage is in the high-20s, and Fairbanks is in the single digits and low teens. You’re not going to dress the same in any of those places as you’d dress in Pittsburg, think that’s where she is, today.

Plus, Northwest fashion, or what passes for fashion, is very different from East Coast fashion and even more different from Southern fashion.

I was better dressed than most high-level ‘crats in Juneau - Brooks Bros., Jos. Bank, mostly, and I had to pretty much maintain a separate wardrobe for forays to the Lower 48. East Coasters and Californicators showing up in Alaska stick out like a sore thumb just as we do if we go somewhere else dressed as we normally would.

I’m pretty near the height of Juneau fashion today for anybody not chained to a desk - I mean I’m pretty much top of the line from head to toe: a pair of Xtratuf rubber boots, the short ones they call Juneau tennys, Eddie Bauer jeans, a heavy Filson belt with a riggers knife, Ok, I do have a RL shirt on, and my coat and hat are Filson’s water repellant “Tin Cloth.” Now most of you don’t know what any of that is and if you saw me walking down your street you’d at least watch me closely and maybe even call the cops.

Yeah, the Palins would need a new wardrobe in the Lower 48.

http://www.adn.com and follow the links. It’s a pretty good piece. I think it demonstrates how little I actually have to do that I’ll put up with some of the “features” of RS 3.0.

Sarah Palin

oldenough Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:36PM EDT (link)

The press is intimated by Sarah Palin. She is attractive, and intelligent. Her record indicates she is MORE than qualified for VP and if need be, the Presidency. Her background exceeds BHO’s in experience and intelligence, even though she is not a lawyer. We all know about lawyer’s stereotype.
Vote McCain/Palin.

Neither her nor her family was prepared for this level of instant exposure

I actually always thought you guys were arrogant pinheads. Wednesday, October 22nd at 8:29PM EDT (link)

Its’ a drag when someone on the national ticket is so unprepared, isn’t it..

She wasn't prepared for the level of adulation she is receiving

25,000 people showing up wherever she is, whenever she appears.

Why it is a problem

JonathanS Wednesday, October 22nd at 9:51PM EDT (link)

Come on now…you really can’t make a comparison between the DNC meals vs. the $150K as you do realize that the $486K is not ONLY for Obama right? Specifically this includes meals for meetings, event dinners and staff where the $150K is ONLY for Palin and her family. Big difference don’t you think?

Also yes I agree that they should be dressing her up but realistically $150K worth?? Let’s be real here, Palin is a beautiful women and she could be wearing Wal-mart and still look good. To spend $150K is utterly excessive just like Edwards and his stupid $400 haircuts.

Finally, the problem is of hypocrisy specifically that Palin has been portraying herself as the waste-buster but then decides to spend $150K of her donators money on clothes. This is frustrating as there are some senate race which are dying for money to attack the democrat war chest that $150k could have been used for. Can you honestly say that the investment of $150K in cloths is going to justify a better return than an investment in some Senate race which desperately needs money?

Pretty liberal

LibRick Thursday, October 23rd at 1:13PM EDT (link)

here. I likely disagree with most on this site regarding many issues. But some of us liberals are pretty fed up with our current tabloid media masquerading as news journalism.

Unfairness isn’t determined by whether there’s a D or an R attached. What’s being done to Palin is just wrong.

Exactly

LibRick Thursday, October 23rd at 1:33PM EDT (link)

One’s wardrobe is dictated by where they live and what they do. Whether anyone likes it or not, appropriate attire is important.

I recently foot the bill for my daughter’s wedding and more was spent on clothes and accessories than I have spent my own wardrobe in my entire lifetime. I didn’t like it but was aware of everyone’s expectations and it was worth it.

So 150K for Sarah and family to be completely outfitted for a presidential campaign seems reasonable. But, I probably would not have felt that before the wedding. Live and learn!

Clarification

LibRick Thursday, October 23rd at 2:11PM EDT (link)

On your first point, It wasn’t DNC spending on meals, it was the Obama/Biden campaign. It was the RNC providing Palin’s wardrobe not the McCain/Palin campaign. I used the meals to illustrate the absurdity of combing through expenditures just to make an irrelevant point. I see it as working backward from a predetermined conclusion by connecting the dots to arrive at a desired premise.

As far as the 150K being excessive, well, in my circles and probably yours, that does seem like a lot. But then I’m not on national TV everyday. I doubt that many high-profile people would honestly bat an eye at that amount. Let me ask you this. If Palin showed up in natty clothes do you really think the media would sing the praises of her frugality? They would rip her up.

To your final point about hypocrisy, I agree about senate races needing money. However, it’s pretty clear that Palin is energizing the base. That means people getting out to vote. She guarantees a better Republican turn-out in all Senate, Congressional, and local races. If Palin looking good helps, then the RNC is investing wisely.

This is for JonathanS
