England’s Remorse: The Moral Price of Liberalism

‘There are pockets of our society that are not only broken, but frankly sick,’ he said.

‘When we see children as young as 13 looting and laughing, when we see the disgusting sight of an injured young man with people pretending to help him while they are robbing him, it is clear that there are things that are badly wrong in our society.

‘For me it is clear that the root cause of this mindless selfishness is the same thing that I’ve spoken about for years. It is a complete lack of responsibility in our society. It is as much a moral problem as a political problem.’

These comments were made on Aug. 10, 2011, by Prime Minister David Cameron in response to the rioting that has been taking place across this England.  Hearing comments of this type from someone who is considered to be a conservative in British society doesn’t surprise me all that much.

Hearing the same type of comments coming from a liberal media source such as The Guardian is a different story.  Here’s an example…

The biggest problem our country has faced over the last two decades is that everyone thinks the government should do everything. Personal responsibility and community responsibility have been replaced by state responsibility. If the riots have shown us anything, it is that this approach does not work.

And there’s also this…

In a way, we are all responsible for the riots, whether directly or indirectly. We watched the previous government talk up rights for young people but with no mention of responsibilities. We have allowed our welfare system to prop up immoral lifestyles. We have not taught all our young people that an entitlement culture is morally wrong. And we have paid the price for this liberalism. Now we need to collectively grow up and take responsibility for responsibility. (emphasis mine)

Shocking, isn’t it?  This author of the Guardian article almost sounds like what is being called a “right-wing extremist” in our own nation.  And not just any “right-wing extremist”, mind you…one of those dreaded social conservatives who take the long-term moral and ethical implications of societal influences into context in their world view.

It seems, at least for the time being, that the people of England are attempting to acknowledge the underlying moral and ethical issues that are at the heart of the matter contributing to the rioting that is taking place.  I wish them the best of success in turning back the tide of an entitlement culture.

All the same, I’m finding myself somewhat envious of them at this point.  Consider these facts…here we have a nation of people, i.e. Great Britain, who have long held the reputation of being a very civilized society, facing a very public uncivilized uprising.  Even amongst their most liberal citizens, the moral and ethical downside of socialism is being openly and honestly acknowledged.  A proud people they may be, but foolish they are not.  Even if it is late in coming, this honesty speaks volumes about their willingness to address the many problems that excessive government intervention has ultimately caused in their nation.   It also plays a significant role in their ability to succeed in overcoming the negative influence that socialism has had on their nation.

Seeing another nation facing the hard cold reality of the long-term moral and ethical consequences of socialism this honestly and openly should be providing Americans, and particularly Conservatives, with a source of inspiration and encouragement to do the same.

I have no expectations at all for the more liberal elements of our nation to be this honest.  The left is still too enamored with their ideology to be realistic about the long-term moral consequences of encouraging members of our society to depend too much on government rather than accepting responsibility for their own actions.  For years on end, they have maneuvered and schemed to move this nation in the direction of becoming a fully-functional socialistic society.  All their dreams and ambitions are centered around this goal.  They aren’t in the least bit likely to acknowledge the truth that socialism is a failure.  It is a failure economically.  It is a failure politically.  It is a failure socially.  Socialism is a failure.  Period.  No, American liberals are still trying to deceive themselves into believing that it has been the methods of implementation that has led to the failure of socialism in other countries, not the policies themselves.  All they have remaining to them is a willful, self-deceitful denial of the truth and a fool’s hope based on a false premise.

But for every citizen of this nation who falls to the right of liberals on the political spectrum, a door of opportunity is now wide open to us.  As the author of Guardian article said, “An entitlement culture is morally wrong”.  Now is the time to present an approach that will allow us to re-establish an environment that empowers individual responsibility.   Not only is this the right thing to do morally and ethically…it is the wisest course of action to take in the long run, for all our sakes.

The question is do we have the courage and resolve to turn back the tide NOW?

Will we speak the truth openly and honestly?

Or will we wait until it is too late?

Here is what they should do:

1.) Give every kid an iMac.
    2.) A subscription to Netflix.
3.) A bag of weed every month.
4.) A lifetime card for meals from McDonalds

Sounds like the long-enduring patience of the British is running short these days. This gentleman really opened up with both barrels loaded, didn’t he?

I wonder how many of their society think this way?

      • lineholder

BTW, I’ve heard that song so many time, but it wasn’t until now that I actually knew the words to the song. Thanks for posting the video.

I’m wondering how long before the citizens of the UK finally decide that enough is enough here.  If this gentleman is so outspoken, what does it say for the people who’d be in the lower tax brackets?

Frankly, I think counter-mobs would be a nice response.  Just take a few of the rioters down and tie them to a lightpole.  Preferably in a physical state that serves as a warning to the rest of the thugs of what may happen if they decide that running into another person’s neighborhood with firebombs and baseball bats is a fun pastime.

      • Joshua Persons

Sikhs protecting their temples, soccer hooligans banding together to protect their neighborhoods. The EDL got involved as well; I don’t know enough about them to condone or condemn.

The police have apparently condemned the countermobs as vigilantism.

        • aesthete

There are others who are not quite so good, but the EDL has made efforts to distance itself from the fascists and racists in its midst.

      • Raven

Showed up early on to keep rioters out of their areas. They also took to the streets immediately afterward to clean up.

The police spent more time keeping the counter-mobs locked up in their neighbourhoods than in controlling the actual mobs.

I think it is funny to listen to a very out spoken atheist rail against the riots. The guy in the video is Pat Condell, and he is a well know anti-theist on youtube. It is funny to hear him talk as if these young people should do this or that. While I agree with his sentiments, I have trouble understanding where he gets his ideas of right and wrong. Why should these young people not go ahead and loot and riot and get what they can while they can? Why should they care about society when they can get a new TV just by breaking a few windows? If they can get away with it, so what?

What Pat does not get is that these wasted lives with no meaning and no sense of community responsibility have their philosophical beginning in a society that has accepted the atheist/ humanist worldview that is currently dominant in the western academy. The end of modernism is that people discovered that the Humanist answer for the world was just like the wizard of Oz. It is just a man behind the curtain, and when you come to the conclusion that men make up the rules, why not make up your own rules rather than live by theirs? The modern mantra: live for the moment, live for the experience, live for your own pleasure!!

Who is Pat Condell but another man railing against the choices of other men? His indignation sounds hollow against the back drop of his own worldview.

I have to admit that I did not recognize this person when I listened to the video.

I’m a Christian, and rarely ever do Christians and atheists find points on which they agree, for obvious reasons. However, as odd as it may sound, I do know of atheists who have strong comprehension regarding moral and ethical issues. They may not believe in God, but they do understand how maintaining higher moral standards impacts society as a whole. They are objective enough to see the flaws in Humanism. It may not seem like much, but in our battle against liberalism and socialism, I’d rather there be at least this much agreement than none at all.

But I definitely agree with your comments about the “eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you die” mentality that so many people have developed. It leaves an emptiness in people’s lives, with no sense of purpose, no sense of direction, no goals, nothing to strive for…only existing in the moment from day to day.

The question is how can this be resolved without government intervention? How can the rest of us act in a way that helps to instill a greater sense of responsibility as individuals?

  • BigRedConservative

Liberalism is the reason for this on two fronts. Firstly it foisted upon Britain a huge entitlement system that it cannot afford. If you’re unemployed in Britain, you get access to good housing, food, fuel, various luxuries. This is in stark contrast to some of my family in India, who have had to skip meals and use third-hand textbooks when unemployed. When people are entitled to most things, they start to believe they’re entitled to everything, and thus that private property is “unfair”.

The other reason is the breakdown of a traditional family. The presence of a father in a family provides an essential stabilizing influence. But in the culture propagated by liberals, families are imploding, and the children migrate to these thuggish gangs which seem to have thankfully died down.

I was getting ready for work, checked in for a moment, and saw your response. I hope you and your family are well. I’ve thought of you several times during the past few days. It’s good to hear that some sense of order is being restored.

I was glad to see acknowledgement of the damage that the entitlement culture causes, even though it came from a highly unlikely source, heh? As far as I’m concerned, liberalism is like a poison that ultimately destroys what is of good in people as individuals, and it thereby undermines a society as a whole, in spite of all the things that liberals might try to lead us to believe otherwise.

and rebuild the walls that enable individuals to freely self govern and self regulate their lives? Instead of building our lives on the crumbling sands of entitlement morality that genuflects to government, will our citizens rebuild on the rock of enduring values and principles that don’t come from gut checks but from God given checks? (Weren’t the Constitution’s authors guided by words in Deuteronomy?)

I am reading “Londonistan” by British journalist Melanie Phillips, who exposes the British “spiral of Decadence” and the rise and fear of militant populations. Britain broke down its godly, moral walls which let amoral progressivism and regressive fanaticism link up and corrupt its national identity.

I pray Britain can be restored. And I pray our nation is restored as well.

          • lineholder

Does it include any recommendations about restoring a stronger sense of morals across English society? If so, would you consider doing a book review type diary presenting that information?

    • runner12

I almost fell over reading the comments from the uber liberal Guardian actually decrying socialism and advocating for personal responsibility.

It is encouraging that people in the UK are finally waking up to the fact the both moral liberalism and progressive, socialist policies lead to the breakdown of a civil society.

I pray that this will be a tipping point for the UK to both turn to God and roll back the decades of neo-socialist policies. I pray the same way for the US.

      • lineholder

I actually backed out of the link then went back into it again to make sure that I was reading the source incorrectly.

It is encouraging to see the tide beginning to turn, and I hope that they will stay true to this purpose. Next, it will be our turn to do the same.

Seems like I’m constantly praying these days, runner12. I know that God hears my prayers, and I know that He has a purpose for the challenges we are facing. I just genuinely love this nation and her people. And I hope there is still time.

I emailed that first Cameron quote around when I saw it and came to much the same conclusion you did. Great writeup.

These problems can only be solved by allowing the existing status quo to simply collpase and die of its own accord. That Britain should be experiencing such problems is beyond outrageous. These problems were purposefully created by the left. It was done as a calculated leftist effort to change western society demographically to create an artificial population more comfortable with leftist rule. It has been allowed to go on for far too long. These political forces are far from spent, and now are in fact more powerful than they have ever been. The notion that there is sufficient political will in the west to even begin resolving any of this is just wishful thinking. Its time for atlas to shrug. The left needs a market just free enough to continue to bleed to feed the growing throngs of the dependents that the left, in turn, depends on for political power. And we keep giving it to them. But, take that away even for a brief time, and it all dies. Starting it back up might be problematic, but its a chance we have to take if we are to have any hope of saving any part of our once great civilization.

Not a bad article, but one should be careful about the word “liberal” when talking about England, since that word means something completely different there. English liberals and the Liberal Party in England are fiscal conservatives and somewhat libertarian. It would have been better to talk specifically about labour party, socialist, progressives, and such terms.

  • 1stRichard

It was in our laws before there was a Constitution, here

    http://www.redstate.com/1strichard/2011/07/25/the-political-spectrum-the-center-of-conservatism-why-it-matters/

Due to every man in his place and proportion, it seems they knew it was a wrong path back then and we see evidence how important it is now.

    • lineholder

I can only share my opinion on this, but I think that due to the tyranny and abuses of power that had existed under the King’s rule in England, our founding fathers were very much so aware of how oppressive this type of society can become, and also how it could push normally law-abiding citizens to engage in lawless behavior. In other words, I think they knew only too well the kind of temptations that citizens experienced when faced with tyranny.

If that is true, and it makes sense that it would be, then in many cases it was conscience and moral standards alone that kept citizens strong enough to resist those temptations.

It isn’t difficult to understand why they put so much emphasis on this during their days of establishing our nation. And it gives the words “we pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor” even greater significance.
