What Is It Exactly That We’re Fighting For?

Do you hear that banging sound?  That’s the sound of opportunity banging away at the Republicans’ door!  Take a look:

For the first time in the history of the Associated Press poll, a majority of Americans, 52%, say President Obama should not be reelected while only 43% say he deserves another term. As recently as last May, those numbers were reversed with 53% saying Obama deserves reelection, while 43% said he didn’t deserve four more years.

Obama’s overall job approval rating has also fallen sharply with only 44% of Americans approving, while 54% disapprove. As recent as this June, those numbers were flipped with Americans approving of the job Obama was doing as president by a 60% to 39% margin.

Going issue by issue, the numbers are even worse for Obama. Only 29% of Americans support Obama signature domestic accomplishment, Obamacare, while 49% oppose the reform. And as the Supreme Court is set to hear a challenge to Obamacare’s individual mandate next year, the poll found that 84% of Americans believe the federal government should not have the power to require all Americans to buy health insurance. Only 15% believe the federal government should have that power.

Majorities of Americans also disapprove of Obama’s handling of the economy (60% disapprove), health care (55% disapprove), the federal budget deficit (62% disapprove), taxes (52% disapprove), immigration (56% disapprove), unemployment (53% disapprove), and gas prices (57% disapprove). The only domestic issues that Obama is has positive numbers on are the environment (55% approve), energy (50% approve), and education (53%).

Overall, 76% of Americans say the country is heading in the wrong direction and 80% rate the economy as poor.

An interesting note to consider is that Obama’s approval rating amongst Independents has dropped dramatically…38% approve while 59% disapprove!

And then there’s this as well:

As for how to balance the federal budget, more [voters] now favor cutting government services as the best means to bring federal spending into balance. Sixty percent think lawmakers should focus on budget cuts over tax increases. That figure had been as low as 53 percent in August, during the showdown over raising the country’s debt limit.

The biggest shift on that question has come from independents. In the August poll, 37 percent said lawmakers should focus on increasing taxes and 42 percent said cutting services. Now, that divide stands at 28 percent for raising taxes and 59 percent for cutting services.

All of these totals are in favor of Republicans.  Each and every one of them.  Republicans even have a slight lead of 1.5% against Obama in the upcoming election.

I’m glad for the lead over Obama, but…1.5%?  That’s all?  Given all the data included above, shouldn’t it be more than this?  Is there any way to increase that lead?  I think there is!

We all know what we are fighting against, although we may express it different ways sometimes (like saying Obama, socialism, liberalism, progressivism, etc).

This is the primary season.  The emphasis has been on competition between various candidates.  That’s to be expected.

But if you look at the data that has been presented above, we do have a very real opportunity NOW.  That door of opportunity may not stay open forever.  If we can articulate what we are fighting FOR along with what we are fighting AGAINST, it might let us begin to increase that lead against Obama NOW.  It could also generate the kind of enthusiasm and motivation that increases interest in and participation for Republicans in the race NOW.

How well do we articulate what we are fighting FOR?  Do we even know what that is?  What is it?  Freedom?  Liberty?  Limited government?  Lower taxes?  Decreasing regulations?  Getting rid of Obamacare?  Growth and development in the private sector that would generate jobs, jobs, JOBS?  Is it preserving the “shining city on the hill”?  Is it restoration of the American spirit?  Is it preservation of the American way?

What ARE we fighting for?  And why?

What do YOU think it is?

    period.
That is the best way to get this country back on track and reduce the national debt and the annual deficits. Austerity cuts are not good for anyone. We do need to shrink the size and scope of the fed govt in order to get them out of the way of the private sector, but too much harping on this is negative.

None of the GOP candidates have talked about their economic growth plans enough. I think Newt has the best ideas for economic growth, then Perry. This is the area of Romney’s biggest failing.

This failing to be the clear candidate with the best understanding and vision for economic growth is why voters keep searching, and many remain undecided.

This is SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE TO THE ELECTORATE.

I do believe economic growth is an important issue in this race. If it can be presented in the context of increasing opportunities (especially for jobs), it’s a message that will resonate with a lot of people. It could allow Repubs to combat the class warfare message, and put emphasis on long-term prospects and long-term security. There are lots of ways this could be presented, aren’t there?

I wanted to try to find out how other people besides myself are looking at what we’re fighting for, because it does seem to me that we don’t emphasize it enough (like you referenced emphasizing economic plans).

And, in this rubric is the myriad of all the other more prosaic issues: Defeating “Obamacare”, slashing the debt, strengthening our national defenses, slashing regulation and taxes, and so on.

If Obama is re-elected, this would spell the end of American Traditionalism and constitution-based individual liberty. We become more a nation of “subjects” versus one of equal “citizens”.

Take a look at what the some of the bureaucrats tucked inside the Obama administration are now referring to Medicare patients as: “Units”. “Units”??!– “Subjects”.

    • lineholder

“Subjects” versus “citizens” in the context of liberty and individual freedom.. Do you have any ideas on how to message it?

Do you remember the ad that the Obama campaign used against Hilary, presenting citizens as being mind-numbed and robot-like? This might be a good time to bring that back to life using it against Obama and showing contrast of liberty and individual freedoms…protecting and preserving Constitutional Liberty and American Traditionalism.

Yeah, I’d already become aware of the language this admin is using in reference to Medicare patients. Add to it all the elements and requirements they’re implementing, ‘curmudgeon, and if people knew the full scope of what’s going on, there’d be a much greater uproar over it. For example, here’s the requirements for “meaningful use” of EMRs

      Talk about being controlled!!!

might work- a picture of Obama in royal Regalia, titled “King Barry I” and a list of statements, policies, that treat citizens like subjects? I don’t know, we are past the days of the wide-reaching impact of political cartoons, aren’t we? Not sure how you would sell that image in a TV spot; animated perhaps

        • lineholder

          If it’s the 3-day type of animation…maybe.

      • conservativecurmudgeon

A 60-second commercial of a series of actual helmet- and, or dashboard-cam footage, –hopefully in stark black and white– in quick series, showing the breaking down of doors of private citizens by fully-armed SWAT teams from federal agencies serving arrest warrents for: not paying student loans (Department of Education) using wood (Gibson guitar), Department of Energy (selling lightbulbs), and so on. This would show the ACTUAL totalitarian bent of our Federal Government as it stands today under Barack Obama…

…and then crawl text at the end that says, “Hope and Change in 2012″

We need desperately to paint the picture of how out of control the Federal Government has become, especially under Barack Obama, and how shrunken against this leviathan the individual has become. And there are a million permutations played against this theme.

        • lineholder

I like it. I like it a lot! It provides a strong sense of what we’re fighting against. How could we go a step beyond what you’ve described to incorporate what we’re fighting for? Individual accomplishments, maybe? All I’m saying is how can we hit both sides, for and against, and how can it be done in a way that is cohesive and effective?

  • rbdwiggins

A few necessary steps must be taken along the way:

    1. Rediscover our Judeo-Christian heritage.
    2. Reclaim our national sovereignty.
    3. Rebuild defense and national security.
    4. Reign in the federal judiciary.
    5. Reform entitlements.
    6. Restructure the federal bureaucracy.
    7. Replace the federal tax code.
    8. Repeal the Obama agenda.
    9. Repair relations with our most trusted allies.
    10. Restrict federal spending.
    11. Retire the public debt.
    12. Reinforce the Tenth Amendment.
    13. Return public education to the States.
    14. Recall and release the States from unfunded mandates.
    15. Remove burdensome and punitive federal regulations.
    16. Restart domestic energy exploration and production.
    17. Recover our hidden natural resources.

and finally, but probably more important than most of the former…

    18. Reward success.

    • lineholder

Agree with it! Every bit of it. Especially “repeal the Obama agenda”.

Do you have any ideas about how to communicate it that would resonate with the general public? The opportunity exists for us to succeed in this, and I doubt that in the least. How?

      • rbdwiggins

The compilation of an increasing number of incredibly dangerous “events” happening domestically and all around the world are about to overwhelm the system.

The American public is hurting, confused, angry and is on the verge of revolt. You can see it in nearly all of the recent poll numbers.

My take: The Occupy Wall Street movement is executing a planned mobilization, will run blindly into the Tea Party Revolution, and deservedly, receive the ultimate smack-down.

        • lineholder

Seriously, we have so much leaning in our favor right now. Maybe things will unfold naturally on their own, much in the way you’ve suggested here.

If not, then I genuinely and sincerely hope we can articulate what it is we’re fighting for. I think if we can, there will be a lot of Americans who join us in the fight.

            1) Pick a subject/occurance/promise you just know Barry has walked away from. Format a 60 second spot with split screens Clearly Illustrating in his own words and deeds , how he flipped on this {or any} topic. Repeat for a period, and then do another, etc.
Don’t beat it to death, but go on for ….say… 4 occurances/incidents. Put his historical record up front and personal to the Voting Public. NO ADVOCACY at all. Let’Um make up their own minds. How can it possibly hurt to use what he has so generously given us in multitude? He’ll be doing ALL THE TALKING.
How precious is that? (Polling for results would confirm effectiveness if this push is done regionally)
