MEMBER DIARY

HAS AMERICA LOST IT’S WAY?

The Obama Administration’s changes and influences are making America virtually unrecognizable. No longer do many Americans exhibit national pride, patriotism, family loyalty, traditional values or religious faith. In fact, those who proudly cling to religious upbringing and biblical teachings seem under attack by Godless advocates seeking to stifle religious liberty.
Opportunity, ambition and work ethics have been replaced by government dependency and a “what’s in it for me “ syndrome. Reliance on programs designed to temporarily assist the indigent have been employed to bribe, enhance and encourage political support.
Sound economics and budgetary practices have been superseded by borrowing money from Communist China to finance wasteful spending and trillion dollar deficits. Member contributions into Social Security and Medical Services have been spent and replaced by promissory notes.
Unsustainable deficits continue without any meaningful attempts to reduce unsound and dangerous impacts on future generations. Our President seems intent on diminution of America’s military capability and superiority at a time external dangers seems extremely foreboding. Sacrificing the world’s finest land, sea and air power encourages our friends to doubt our support and emboldens our enemies to question our deterrent ability. Isn’t it embarrassing that America must now pay Russia millions of dollars to transport our astronauts to and from the space station we constructed?

Combine these characteristics with a government intent on legalizing drugs, condoning same sex relationships that foster an HIV/Aids epidemic and rewarding illegal foreign invaders with citizenship and voting rights and its no wonder America has lost it’s way.

I fundamentally disagree with, let’s be conservative and say, 99% of what you’ve written. But there’s one point in particular that I’d like to address. A little background first. I am a liberal who frequents this site because I like being challenged, and I like to read what non-like minded people think. I am also an openly gay man who lives in a rural part of an uber red state (Louisiana) with my partner. We go to work, and we pay our taxes (this may surprise some readers of this site that yes, liberals pay their share of taxes… hahahaha). And our relationship, our lifestyle does not foster the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Nor do the relationships of many of our friends in the gay community. Secrecy and shame (from some good, God-fearing people in many cases) and flat out ignorance add fuel to the fire to this awful epidemic. And by the way, HIV/AIDS is not just a gay problem; it’s a global one.
But to the overall thrust of your diary, it seems to me like you’ve taken Mitt Romney’s loss to President Obama as proof that America is in decline. I could not disagree more. This is still a country of good, decent people who work, pay taxes, help neighbors, serve in uniform, and vote for the leadership that they want. The results may not be what you wanted, but the system still worked. Best wishes, and cheer up. 2014 is right around the corner!

agree that many on this site cannot understand the gay community. Many outside this site cannot understand the issues within the gay community. SO I am not even going to comment on that aspect of the post, except that Mary Maitland said on Sunday that the issue of same sex marriage is insignificant when compared to the devastating impact of the single parent household in this country. Single parent homes have now become the norm in our society. The studies have consistently shown that children from single parent homes are more likely to live in poverty, not graduate from high school, become involved in illegal drug use, have a child out of wedlock, and end up serving time in jail.

That is just one example of how our society has changed for the worse. You may say that Obama is not responsible for that problem but the government’s policies reward the destruction of the family by rewarding people who act irresponsibly. It is the same as the extending the unemployment benefits to european socialists levels. The result is that people take the money and avoid finding work.

The diary mentions that religious freedom is under attack. Sara Fluke is the poster child for that attack. Those arguments are foreign to your thinking because I have heard the talking points that are regurgitated on this subject. They say that the insurance companies are the ones to pay the free contraception benefits. What it doesn’t address is the actual religious doctrine that the Catholic church professes and guaranteed in the Constitution, that the birth of a child is a gift from God. We as mortals should not play God ourselves and determine whether one life is more “worthy” than another. It is another example of how we in our American society have chipped away at our values and made getting laid more important than giving the miracle of birth and life to a new and completely unique person. You would think that someone in your shoes would understand that. Imagine a horrible world that genetically can choose to terminate unborn children who may be gay, or female, or not tall enough, or smart enough, or white enough, or athletic enough. We are already on the path and this administration in every way supports going down that road.

I don’t buy the “you have to be gay to understand the gay community” line. The line and the thought behind it is simply a product of our post modern culture.

        • klinzay

I never said that you have to be gay to understand the gay community. I do think that people who have gay family and friends tend to adjust their view of the gay community though.

The reply was to morstar150. His / her post seemed to hedge along those lines.

          • klinzay

I see that now! :) Can I ask your take on the diarists position? Do you think America has in fact lost it’s way? I think I got off topic in an earlier response. So I apologize for that.

          • kipling

Yes, I think the United States has wandered from its moral and constitutional foundation.

      • klinzay

I appreciate your thoughtful reply, and I’d like to address a couple of additional issues that you’ve raised. Concerning single parent households, I agree that children raised by one parent face greater challenges, especially poverty. But single parent families are still the minority, not the norm. And our president is an excellent example of someone who succeeded while being raised by a single mother (and of course with
the help of a very supportive set of grandparents). I would like to know what government policies President Obama supports that promote the “destruction of the family”. And how is he rewarding those who act irresponsibly? And define irresponsibly, please. Because if “irresponsible” is just contrary to a set of religious or personal ideals, then it’s really just a matter of preference or of choice (as long as it’s not a violation of law).
And in this nation, we are allowed to make bad choices.

On to the unemployment benefit portion. Unemployment fraud is rare. That is fact. Independent analysis has confirmed that less than 2% of those on unemployment abuse the system. Most people collecting a check are just trying to make ends meet until their next job opportunity comes around. They are not trying to take a handout and go on a 12 month vacation.

Based on the rest of your reply, it seems that you and the diarist think that religious freedoms are under direct attack by the President and his (my… I’ll take ownership here… hahahhaha) party. This is difficult because I don’t want to seem callous. I’m not a person of faith, but most of my family members are. What’s funny is that we live our lives in very similar ways. We believe in treating others the way that we want to be treated; we just come at it from different directions. I’m hedging here. I’ll just say that I think Sandra Fluke is a brave woman who stood up for what she believed.
I believe like she does that a woman has a right to have access to contraception because it is fundamental to her right to determine when/if she wants children. I also believe that President Obama is a religious man; he just happens to like his state and religion separated as do I.
Wow, I’m long winded. I need to learn to be more succinct!

You need to read the studies of how welfare and the programs of the Great Society destroyed the black family. The larger problem is not that people are allowed to make bad choices. It is that people are not allowed to suffer the consequences of those bad choices. The government has stepped in to make sure that our actions no longer have consequences. Have a one night stand and get pregnant? Get an abortion and kill someone else for your lack of restraint. Or, raise the child, let the husband skip out, and have the government play the role of bread winner. Without consequences, people keep repeating the same actions.

          • klinzay

Since when is welfare a black family problem? The vast majority receiving welfare assistance are in fact white families. Poverty has a way of cutting through racial lines. And people do suffer the consequences of bad choices all the time. The government does not have a magic wand to absolve you of consequences. Take for instance your example of the one night stand that leads to pregnancy. If a woman opts for an abortion, it is within her constitutional right to do so. She is then forced to live with her decision, i.e. consequence. I have known numerous women who’ve made the difficult choice to end a pregnancy (for various reasons; and some within the context of marriage), and not one has made that choice lightly. Liberals like Conservatives care about life. But we also see the place for choice.

          • kipling

You cannot claim to care about life when you choose death and advocate it through pro-death industries like Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood hides the consequences of abortion and even opposes laws that make abortion providers be honest about the consequences. The ultimate consequence of the abortion is the death of the child – a child brutally murdered with the assistance of its mother. Abortion is neither constitutional or moral. It deprives the infant of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness with the due process of law and thus violates the 5th Amendment. The Supreme Court is wrong on the issue, just like they were wrong in the Dred Scott decision and Plessy v. Ferguson. As a society we choose to promote the fiction of “constitutionality” just like we promoted the fiction that slavery was “constitutional.”

          • klinzay

In my experience, Planned Parenthood workers provide valuable counseling and help for those that seek their services. And abortion is a 100% legal service. You may not like it, but it is a legal option for American women. You can disagree with the Court, but unless Roe is overturned, the decision stands. I respect your right to vehemently disagree though.

          • kipling

I suggest you watch some of the undercover videos done about the “counseling” Planned Parenthood provides. I suggest you also read the book, interviews, and testimony done by Abby Johnson.

You are missing the most important point, America is not unrecognizable. It is very recognizable. You can identify ice cream regardless of the flavor right? Well what you are seeing is simple segregation, although not based on the obvious criteria of race. But rather of political and social characteristics. You are seeing segregationist tactics at work, no different then those applied by the Democrats in the racial divided south.

Here is the truth about the racially divided south of the Jim Crow years. Blacks voted Republican. Suppress the black vote, suppress the Republican vote.

It is harder for the Democrats to segregate and control Republicans today because our base doesn’t include such an easily identifiable racial component. But the effort is the same, divide people into groups, pit one against the other and keep EVERYONE in line by applying tried and true tactics. Voter suppression, influence and patronage. What most people don’t understand is that the purpose of the segregation was to make it easier for those in power to reward their friends and punish their enemies, regardless of race.

Republicans in the blue states, and especially the blue cities are people on an island. Their jobs, their children’s future, their liberty (what remains of it) is dominated by progressive organizing groups. There is nothing to counter it. Sure a big part of it is that there are takers. But just as important the makers are suppressed to the will of the Progressives. That we can do something about, but it will take more than a few white papers and our blogs diaries.

WmCraig, your depiction of the leftist tactics as “segregationist tactics” is brilliant. It gives plenty of food for thought. Godspeed.
