“Italian luxury goods manufacturer VBH boasted yesterday that First Lady Michelle Obama had toted their $5,950 alligator manila clutch earlier this week while on a trip to Russia.
No way, said the White House, which countered that the First Lady was carrying an $875 VBH patent leather clutch.” ‘www.nydailynews.com’
I guess while people are losing their jobs, their homes, their futures, Michelle Antoinette will have them ‘eat cake’. It’s amazing the White House would insist on arguing a 900 dollar purse is acceptable while a 6000 dollar purse is ‘outlandish’. I don’t really care that much about the purse but it is simply another symbol, like flying to New York for a show, getting Sarkozy to open the stores in Paris, and 600 dollar tennis shoes while feeding the poor, that this woman is an arrogant, self-righteous elite who believes words are all that matters. I guess it would seem to be a family trait since Obama seems to act in exactly the same fashion.

Pretty thin complaint
SteveLA Friday, July 10th at 7:51PM EDT (link)I’m not big on the “beat up the politicians wife” game unless they step into the public policy arena (See Hillary Klinton) where they become fair game, so got more than this?
Did Mrs. Obama say something related to running this country or some other things that are worthy of commentary? That would be fair game, this one, not so much.

When Zer∅ talks about shared sacrifice
6eorge Jetson Friday, July 10th at 10:02PM EDT (link)and then Michelle & Barack fly to NYC for a date night, or fly in the pizza chef from St Louis, or indulge in $100/lb steaks, then, yes, the hypocrisy is fair game.
Sorry, but if Zer∅ wants to tell Americans to live more frugally, then he ought to be able to tell his wife not to run around spending money like Paris Hilton.
Not that thin a complaint, Steve.
Martin Knight Friday, July 10th at 10:39PM EDT (link)Can you imagine the amount of **** that would be flung our way if a Republican President’s wife wore items of clothing and accessories worth half as much as what Michelle Obama regularly wears with an economy in the state it’s in?
Bush was lambasted for spending so *much* on his 2004 inauguration and yet Obama spends about 4 times as much and the Press was too busy swooning to notice - in fact I believe one commentator that attacked Bush for his extravagance in January 2005 wrote an article attacking Republicans for pointing out the bill being run up by Obama in January 2009.
I think it’s time for Republicans to stop being so noble and start applying the Golden Rule - treat others as they would treat you. i.e. if Cindy McCain or Laura Bush wore $600 sneakers or carried around $900 clutches or threw cocktail parties every Wednesday at the White House (as the Obama’s do), during a period with unemployment at close to 10%, will this treated by the DNC and its adjuncts in the Press Corps as a “SCANDALl!!!” or “CONTROVERSY!!!”?
Yes?
Then this is fair game.

Just think of this
Jack_Savage Friday, July 10th at 10:45PM EDT (link)What if, for example, Sarah Palin was furnished some new clothes to wear during the campaign - the press would have gone NUTS. Probably would have wondered who paid for them, how much they cost, stuff like that.
Class warfare?
SteveLA Friday, July 10th at 10:50PM EDT (link)Martin
Seems to me the other side’s thing is class warfare and not a Republican thing, and this complaint is about issues of class/status and not substance. But hey, go with what you’re good at.

Class warfare IS the other side's thing

Martin Knight Saturday, July 11th at 6:24AM EDT (link)My question is; do you honestly think the American people give a ****? Do you honestly think, after the past two cycles, that there is any large subset of voters that care only about substance? Even the so-called “moderates” who supposedly do so, but are really just sanctimonious know-nothings, mostly went out to vote for Obama.
This is not about class warfare - this is about highlighting “their” hypocrisy. This is about hitting back. Remember Alinsky’s Rule 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”
This is a fight on all fronts, Steve. No one is saying we should ignore substance. In fact, speaking for myself, I would be happy if substance were all, but that’s not the case.
Bush spent 2005 to 2009 ignoring the media, being “above the fray” - how’d that work out?
Look … you “moderates” are not known to be fighters. You don’t like getting your hands dirty. And that’s okay. That you want to be treated as being key to victories hard-won by conservatives, quite often in spite of your opposition instead of your support when it counted is also okay.
But if you refuse to help, can’t you at least be silent?
It really is a bit much to sanctimoniously insist on us following the rules while studiously ignoring the flagrant flouting of those same rules by the other side.
To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. Oh, Martin -- YOU DA MAN!

Yeah!

Speaking as somebody more socially moderate than most of the readers here...
Moe Lane Saturday, July 11th at 7:23AM EDT (link)…Martin’s right. The Democrats are not interested in dialogue, bipartisanship, or mutual admiration societies. They are interested in making the determination of American policy issues a purely internal matter among the several factions of the Democratic party. They will only stop being interested in that when we make them stop being interested in that, and that means going after the faux-populist, elitist SOBs hammer and tongs.
Us or them. Everybody reading this can make their own choice, of course.

Wham! Bam! Thank you sir.
itrytobenice Saturday, July 11th at 7:45AM EDT (link)Precisely. We have to hit them where the people who voted for him will listen. They don’t care about ’socialism’. Socialism sounds just great to them. They don’t care about ‘nationalization’. Nationalization sounds fine.
But blatant hypocrisy? That will make some of them notice.
And like Martin says, make them live up to their standards. It’s the new rule.
The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
I think we should beat up Michelle Antoinette

Telling Michelle Obama how she should be spending her money?
NickinOz Saturday, July 11th at 6:47AM EDT (link)Isn’t that, umm, ’socialist’.
Ok sorry, I am baiting OP, but I just find this too funny.
Why do you have a problem with that?
Martin Knight Saturday, July 11th at 6:53AM EDT (link)Liberals have no problem telling everyone how to spend their money, when and where educate their kids, what they should eat, etc.
So are you protesting because it offends you or because you don’t want anyone else in on the act?
PS: Where were you when your fellow Democrats were bawling about the clothes the McCain Campaign used its own money to buy for Sarah Palin to wear at campaign stops?

Lol, "fellow Democrats"
NickinOz Saturday, July 11th at 7:08AM EDT (link)Ok, deep breath…
Firstly, read my user ID Doofus. I live in Australia, and I grew up in New Zealand. I am not a democrat. In my 12 years as an eligible voter I have voted for both left and right wing parties in Aussie and NZ. Just FYI New Zealand (where I did my politics degree) has a more complex and nuanced political system than the ‘them or us’ system which basically operates in the USA, involving a variety of 3rd parties that have a substantive impact on governing the country. Pigeonholing, well, it just doesn’t work so well.
So, why am I here? Because I am a hard core political junkie. I read Redstate and TPM for most of my US political gossip / views / etc. I generally enjoy just reading the comments, but it really does push my political irony button when I read threads telling the obamas what they should / shouldn’t do with their wealth on a site that ostensibly holds a libertarian position on economics.
Also, does anyone know how I can sticky this post in my profile so I won’t have to go through this again (I suspect it may come up from time to time).
Oooh, direct insult.
Moe Lane Saturday, July 11th at 7:10AM EDT (link)After I tried to be nice in my warning to you, too.
