“Higher” Education Needs a New Adjective (Updated . . . Already!)
Might I suggest any of the following?
-
Profane Education
-
Depraved Education
-
Degrading Education
-
Demoralizing Education
-
Dehumanizing Education
-
Fraudulent Education
-
Ass-hat-erific Education
-
Just-Plain-Stupid Education
Any of the adjectives above are far more descriptive than “higher” when it comes to many colleges and universities these days.
The latest outrage comes from the University of Maryland (UM) where the student union theater will be showing a XXX-rated porno film entitled, “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge.”
Lisa Cunningham, the program coordinator of the Hoff Theater where the film will be shown, explains the rationale for showing hardcore porno to college students:
“We thought this would be something fun for the students to do, especially since we’re getting close to the end of the semester.”
Be it known, though, you can’t pin this thing on Lisa alone . . . a ten student committee responsible for selecting films voted unanimously (how’s that for diversity of ideas?!) to show the porn. And, the administration of UM has no problem with it either. They think it might do some good to stop late night drinking . . . fascinating logic, eh? Let’s stop one vice (excessive drinking) with another vice (porno) that also happens to dehumanize women. “PhD” must stand for, “Porno! Hot Damn!”
The film will be shown at midnight, giving a whole new meaning to the term, “pulling an all nighter.” The cost for students is $4, which covers the expense of staffing for the showing of the porno. The folks that made the film offered it for free to the UM.
And finally, just guess what’s the icing on the cake (Devil Food’s cake, I’d venture)?
Wait for it . . . . Are you sitting down? . . . Not sipping any coffee are you? . . . Good.
Planned Parenthood will be there before the film to talk about safe sex and emergency contraception! But, don’t take their presence there as an indication that Planned Parenthood endorses pornography. How could you think such a ridiculous thing? Planned Parenthood is all about women’s rights . . . right?
Let’s have Dr. Laura Meyers, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, set you straight. According to the good doctor, Planned Parenthood was asked to be there by the UM (birds of a feather really do flock together) to talk and teach about safe sex (never pass up a teaching opportunity, right?!). Planned Parenthood ensures us that it:
“Does not endorse or support the making or showing of pornography.”
So just because they are there at an event that features is headlined by XXX porno in no way means they are technically associating with an industry that objectifies and dehumanizes women. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!
Finally, I couldn’t help noticing the connection between (1) Notre Dame’s invitation to Barack Obama to deliver their commencement speech (and receive an honorary degree) and (2) the University of Maryland’s choice to show XXX porno. What’s the connection? It’s all in a name and that name is “Mary.” Notre Dame of course means “Our Lady” and Maryland was named in honor of the Virgin Mother. Our Lady and Mary is the same person.
Luke 1:48 states, “For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.” . . . not, however, if you’re at an institution of higher education.

UPDATE: Due to a threat by Maryland state legislators to remove millions in state funding, the UM President has cancelled the film (see news story here).
So, the UM eventually did the right thing . . . but only at threat of losing cold, hard cash (Ka-Ching!). Make no mistake, the quaint, old notions of morality had no influence in UM’s decision to cancel the film. The points made in this diary still stand.
