A Refreshing Moment of Awe and Wonder

Obama, the ultimate cult-of-personality empty suit, wins the presidency of the United States in fall 2008. The results thus far?

  • A weakened foreign policy complete with worldwide apology tours
  • A “stimulus” bill Trojan horse to European style socialism
  • Tax payer funded abortions overseas
  • An outright racist selected for the Supreme Court
  • The very real possibility of cap and trade, another Trojan horse delivering sky high energy prices and officially coding into law the lunacy and bad science that is Anthropomorphic Global Warming
  • The United States’ very own Volkswagon in the form of government owned General Motors
  • The freakin freak show that is Al Frankin is bulldozed into the Senate by the Minnesota Supreme Court. Their decision? Sure, absentee ballots were not uniformly judged, but who the hell cares, Al is a Democrat! Counting the ailing Kennedy and Bird, this gives the Democrats a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.
  • A very real possibility of Card-Check, which would greatly empower the unions, further burden industry, and result in more job loss and higher prices.
  • An Obama and Dem push for nationalizing health care

The list can go on and on and Obama hasn’t even been in office seven months! As the old saying goes, “Elections have consequences,” and this one’s consequences are watershed changes.

Depressing, eh? And, the sense of despondency only deepens when you also consider how many Republican politicians are invertebrates.

In the darkest moments, God fearing people of Abrahamic faiths (Christian, Jew, and Muslim) should always remember the Providence of God. Although man has made a sty of the place, this our world, God is still the Lord of history, even in the countless cases where He must make lemonade out of the lemons that we humans harvest on a regular basis.

For Christians, a seeming dark hour in Scripture was the crowning with thorns. The Lord of all that is seen and unseen is mocked, ridiculed, and spat upon . . . the insulting and painful crown of thorns well representing sinful man’s rejection of the Lordship of God. Man can play god, but he cannot be God. The triumph ultimately belonged to He who is the ultimate author of creation.

Then, we must be reminded of Job. He was tormented and lost it all. Evil seemingly triumphed over good and God appeared nowhere in sight or presence. None of that was true . . . appearance and reality often do not coincide. God allowed the test. The Lord was still in full control of creation, not as an oppressive dictator, but as a benevolent Father. Job’s test was one of fidelity and faith. In simple human relations mere words can describe virtues, but mere words are a flimsy veneer if not put to the test. When a soldier is awarded a medal of honor for bravery, it’s because of proven bravery and not the theoretical concept of bravery. Our relationship with God is no different.

So, people of faith take heart and rely on the majestic power of God our Father . . . need a little more proof of that majestic power, you say?

Then, take a journey back in time and I mean way, way back in time to the Big Bang. Colloquially speaking, most folks are familiar with the concept of the Big Bang, but many don’t realize that the Big Bang theory was hotly contested by scientists and an alternative to the Big Bang is still actively pursued by cosmologists to this day.

Why such resistance to the Theory of the Big Bang? Because it implies a prime mover, something that exists outside the chain of dependencies which led to you or me.

Consider your existence for a moment as a grand chain of dependent events. You are here and you are the result of you mother and father; keep going back generation after generation. Now, keep extending that chain of dependent events way back to the origin of man, to the origin of the earth, to the origin of the universe itself. If that chain has a starting point, then we have a humbling moment of awe and wonder to consider. That ultimate beginning is what many scientists worked tirelessly to disprove. They failed.

There is evidence of an independent beginning. Something outside of everything we know . . . time, space, and the very laws of physics which govern the material universe. The Big Bang is evidence of not just something emerging from nothing, but of everything emerging from nothing. It implies an original cause, a prime mover, it implies God.

So, fellow conservatives of faith . . . Christian, Jew, and Muslim . . . chin up! Dark forces may think they are in the driver’s seat of history and they will certainly try to convince you of that in an effort to demoralize you, but in all actuality they are merely tooling around in carnival bumper car. God is the one truly in control. With a simple flip of the master switch, the bumper car would come to a grinding halt.

Politically fight on . . . call and write your senator and congressman to voice your disapproval. Write editorials, speak with your neighbors, and get involved with local politics. All of these activities contribute to resisting Obama’s “change.” But, people of faith should never forget to also pray, and have faith in and rely on the Providence of God, who is a mighty God and the true Lord of history.

COMMENTS

Thank you so much for reminding us that “Man proposes, God disposes.” As painful as it is to log on and read the news every day, it is a reminder over and over again that faith in God is the only thing that will bring us through all of this.

The other evening, after a long string of days with miserable heat and humidity here in Tennessee, we had a cold front move through. I stood on my back deck that faces due west and watched a most beautiful sunset of coral, pink, and lemon against a deep blue sky with the most wonderful and refreshing cool breeze against my face. It was one of those moments that opens up the doorway between one’s soul and the Maker. I felt so blessed.

I think I’ve said it before, mailloux, but it bears repeating; I nominate you for the job of being St. Mailloux of RedState, chaplain and miracle-worker all in one. You are unfailingly able to lift us out of the doldrums and raise our eyes to heaven. Given the relentless bad news, that is SOME miracle!

    • mailloux

Thank you for your much too kind words. I am really very undeserving of them. I also know it’s a good day?s work when you give a nod of approval. You are very well respected in the RedState Community and we are privileged to have you in our ranks.

By the way, the description of that Tennessee sunset is a better reminder of God’s omnipotence and charity than anything in my post.

St. Mailloux he is. In fact, your words “chaplain and miracle worker” are perfect.

Mailloux, many a day your diaries have helped lift a weary spirit. This diary came in such a timely manner. Your helpful reminder of trusting in the Lord and that he is stronger and mightier than evil, again gives sustenance.

      Thank you.

journey to sainthood here. As far as the miracle-worker thing, we’d all appreciate knowing that you have some extra pull with the Almighty when 2010 rolls around!

On a serious note though, your exhortation for us to pray is most excellent advice. No matter how hard we may work to flush the political system of the noxious beings that have corrupted it so, ultimately it will only be with His help that we will succeed. What manner of success we will achieve, I have no idea. His ideas and mine quite often diverge in that area. :-)

        • TNJim

          But seriously….

No matter how dark, no matter how bleak, no matter how lost, no matter how impossible the future may seem, prayer is that great connection between God and man that makes all trials easier to cope with. As Janis says, in her way, we may not always be clear on God’s plan for us and our nation, as individuals or collectively, but we can know He is in control and can take comfort in that.

Just re-read Janis’ comment about the sunset…..

I’m very humbled by your regard for what I’ve been posting on RedState and for me personally. I thank you all for your readership and comments.

You folks might remember the old Army motto used in advertisements several years back. It simply stated, “Be all that you can be.” You can certainly become great and virtuous in the army. No doubt about that. But, you can only ever be fully human as God intended by doing His will and trusting in Him. Instruments we are in His hands. We only cooperate with His greatness. Some, like the martyrs, cooperate heroically.

Saints in training are those who follow that simple, but sometimes difficult rule in life . . . so, you folks are treading the same narrow path I too am struggling to stay on. All we can do is to trust in God and pray for each other.

Thanks for all you do here in the RedState community and for the conservative movement.

It’s so easy for me to feel crushed under the weight of the loads being put on our constitution and governance by the current regime, which threatens to break our nation at any time – and to feel like Canute against the tide.

Thanks for the reminder that God is in charge, even if the tide does sweep away our castles in this generation. Which will truly suck if it does happen, but that has happened to God’s people many times in the past (c.f. Jeremiah).

After all, didn’t Jesus warn us about houses built on sand versus those built on the Rock.

Christians may disagree on the exact definition of the Rock, but we all agree that this Rock is not of this world and that ultimately all which will stand in the end must be rooted in Christ, the eternal Logos.

And that is our testimony against the secularist false prophets who in their present ascendency threaten to deceive the world and peoples therein.

    • mailloux

Bleak is certainly an apt description of the era of Obama, but ultimately, Obama is one of those secularist false prophets. He’ll end up just another flash in the pan. He may exact some damage along the way, but Obama’s house is definitely not built upon the Rock.

Thanks for reading, commenting, and the reco too!

It is a reminder that there is one special term limit that no Latin American tyrant or North American leftist can do a thing about. Every one of us has an expiration date on our life, and only God knows that date.

One rule of thumb for a life has been three score and ten. I notice today that a 69 year old Henry Waxman has been rushed to the hospital. A lot of the stuff you list has been getting pushed by these folks for many years. They just may run out of time.

    • mailloux

than to contemplate that I do not personally will my heart to continue beating. With every breath and every beat, I’m being given something, free of charge, which I have absolutely no control over. IMHO, arrogance is not recognizing and appreciating the Lordship of God.

I will pray for Henry Waxman’s health . . . and especially for his spiritual health. In times of sickness, it’s especially timely to make right with God.

Thanks for visiting my diary, commenting, and the reco too!

I always try to look at things through God’s eyes. The financial meltdown, the last presidential election, the current batch of laws being implemented, it all serves a purpose. It is up to us to put aside our view of current events and ask “What are You trying to teach us from this?” Once you look at events from that angle, things become more clear. I call it “putting on the God goggles.” While living in a fallen world, we need to take it on faith that God knows what is best for us and while his plan is unfolding we are going to go through trials.

As far as the big bang theory, you are absolutely right. I love apologetics and vehemently defend God’s creative majesty. We would not look at a building and think a huge explosion caused the building to appear in a field. No matter how many explosives were used or how much time had elapsed, the second law of thermodynamics precludes order coming from disorder. There was obviously a builder if there is a building. Yet these same people will look around at the sun, sky, trees, flowers, grass, animals, mountains, and oceans and come to the conclusion that there was a huge explosion billions of years ago that caused this to happen.

I am a fan of the Answers in Genesis website. There are reams of great apologetic arguments written by biologists, astronomers, paleontologists, and scientists from all disciplines. They do a great job explaining the universe and creation from a Biblical worldview.

Second Chronicles 7:14 sums up how we should be acting in these times: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

    • janis

quoted reminds me all over again of the incredible amount of wisdom in that book. I was raised going to church regularly and read the Bible when I was supposed to, but, like so many kids, was too young and inexperienced in life to realize that those verses contain eternal wisdom, not just principles that applied back when Jesus walked this earth.

This far along the path, now I turn to the Bible very frequently and find comfort in every circumstance. As to what lessons God is giving us the opportunity to learn currently, surely one lesson is that having a lot of “stuff” does not represent security. And even more to the point, in my mind at least, is the notion that mankind can set aside every single moral precept and still succeed.

    • mailloux

apologetics. I haven’t heard of the website you linked to above, but I’m eager to check it out. Thanks for pointing it out.

I was speaking with my parish priest recently who was contrasting past times of faith when art, literature, and architecture were done for the glory of God with our current time of doubt. It’s surprising that with our greater understanding of nature, we doubt more. That, I think, is the result not of science, but of politics and anti-religious ideologies co-opting science as just another tool in their propaganda arsenal.

Although battles may rage, who wins the war is already settled. We should always bear that in mind whenever we feel defeated.

Thanks for reading, commenting, and the reco too.

We willl be embarking on PC recruitment activities on July 4. But we all recognized that the MOST IMPORTANT thing we should be doing is praying to our Creator as often as we can to ask Him for his guidance and assistance in restoring our liberties, and so that we may “assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle [us] . . . with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence . . . .”

St. Mallioux, and wayneinnh, thank you.

  • wordsarepower

I was praying and suddenly moved by the realization that I have no fear about what this administration is doing. None. While some of the things I may have to deal with won’t be fun or easy, I know, with absolute certainty, that God is in control. If He allows it, with His help I can deal with it. After all, He holds me (and all who believe in His name and trust) in the palm of His hand…how much safer can we be?

We must, can, and will continue to fight the good fight. Even if it seems the righteous are outnumbered, the angels of heaven surround us and enable us each and every day, and they are pretty powerful! :)

Thanks, mailloux, for the gentle reminder. Oh, and we have beautiful skies in Florida too; I see Him in the clouds daily.

    • mailloux

and thank you for your very wise comments. The angels are our advocates and they are all around us . . . God is the Lord of all that is seen and unseen, and we as human beings on this side of the veil see precious little of the entire scope of reality.

Thanks for reading, commenting, and the reco too!

What a wonderfully moving diary! Thank you so very much for writing this. With all of the bad news that we are constantly bombarded with, it is sometimes too easy to forget that no matter what, God is in control.
So, thank you again for your eloquently written reminder that no matter how terrible things seem, God is driving the car and we’re just along for the ride. God has blessed my life incredibly, and I should use everyday as an opportunity to rejoice!
To wayneinnh, your analogy about buildings in a field and Big Bang is perfect!!! I would’ve never thought to put it that way, so kudos to you.
