Hell’s Bells Ringing on December 13, 2009

Imagine a fellow sitting alone in his one room efficiency apartment. In his hand, he sports a flyswatter, and in his apartment, there is indeed a fly on the loose. The man is singularly preoccupied with killing that bug. He sits on a chair in the center of the room vigilantly keeping watch for any movement of his prey. As he waits, he conjures up all the dire consequences that could happen if the fly was to simply go about its business uncontested. That insect, he thinks to himself, is probably a germy little beast and if it was to land on my toast, I just might catch whatever it’s carrying! The mental list of what that fly could do goes on and on, and a molehill becomes a mountain.

At the perimeter of the man’s awareness is the presence of something else in his one room efficiency besides the fly. Although the man kinda-sorta knows something else is in the room, he nonetheless relegates it to the back of his mind. Right now, he’s got to deal with that little buzzing nemesis. Unfortunately for the fly-preoccupied man, the something else in his room is a serpent of the poisonous variety. Although the man may be selectively ignoring the serpent, the reverse is certainly not true. The serpent is keenly aware of the man and regards him as an existential threat. The poor, hapless, obsessed man is in mortal danger and he’s barely even aware of it . . . thanks to that fly.

The small story above is a pretty fair analogy of what the World Council of Churches (WCC) is planning to do. The WCC is calling for all member churches to ring their bells 350 times on December 13, 2009. The number of rings (350) is meant to remind people of the upper limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that many scientist have declared as safe; it’s been set by these scientists at 350 parts per million. And the December 13th date? Well, that’s meant to coincide with the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit.

The WCC (made up of 348 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican churches in 110 countries) is also encouraging all other faiths to join in and ring whatever it is they may have on hand, such as a gong. Even the Catholic Bishops in Europe (The Council of European Bishops Conferences) have signed on.

This bell ringing exercise is no different than the fly-preoccupied man in the story above. While the WCC, and all else who jump on their bandwagon, chase an essentially harmless fly (i.e. the farce of global warming/climate change/Gaia worship), a real serpent inches closer to its victim waiting for the perfect moment to strike a decisive death blow. While the WCC and company dilly dally about global climate change and elevate it to the equivalent of a sin to deny it, the serpent goes about its work in the forms of abortion, plummeting birth rates, the withering of the traditional family, the destruction of the institution of marriage, etc.

Chasing flies and ringing bells . . . it’s the kind of wicked irrationality that makes one think of the devious planning between Uncle Screwtape and Wormwood in C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters.” I can just imagine Uncle Screwtape writing, “Let’s give those humans an obsession that’s no more than an emanation from a penumbra of a new and false religion derived from science, politics, and nature worship. They will love the faux righteous feel of it and not notice a single thing as we go about the devilish work of tearing apart all that is true, good, and beautiful.”

The ringing of the bells on December 13, 2009 will not be a call to worship, honor, and the love the Lord your God. It will be a call to worship at the altar of Gaia in honor of the Gospel of radical environmentalism. If anything were to sound like Hell’s Bells, this is probably it.

I know we aren't supposed to

mom2oneson Thursday, November 12th at 11:27AM EST (link)

start Christmas celebrations during Advent and I really try no to but it always makes me SO excited this time of year when I see the stores selling frozen appetizers and gift baskets and baking stuff and hearing Christmas music because they are celebrating the birth of Jesus, it’s just so wonderful that everyone is celebrating and singing about Christ’s birth.
This is sickening. They aren’t even doing some type of remember the hungry or not religious but good works type of thing.

mom2oneson, "Tis the season" does indeed mean different things to different people . . .

mailloux Friday, November 13th at 4:32PM EST (link)

I too look forward to the Christmas season and get just as excited as do my children. They know full well what it is that we are celebrating, which has the effect of making it even more exciting than just a visit from Santa.

Thanks for reading, commenting, and the reco too!

An appropriate title for this piece.

Hell’s bells, indeed. The Churches are becoming empty of purpose when such a thing as this is more exciting to them than worship and love of God.

You’re spot on . . . stuff like this goes a long way to explaining the exodus that some churches are experiencing. People go to church for God, not PC lefty dribble. For that, all they need to do is turn on MSNBC or CNN. They need not bother to get up early on a Sunday morning and head to church.

Thank you for reading, taking the time to comment, and the reco too!

So, the bells can ring for Global Warming.

penguin2 Thursday, November 12th at 1:06PM EST (link)

But they are silent for the true purpose of loving and honoring God. I rarely hear the bells of the churches anymore. Many do not ring them even on Sundays. Regulations and political correctness have silenced them. To be fair, it is the people themselves who have enabled this to happen. The WCC has forgotten their faith foundation.

The First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before Me.” Global warming adherents have turned this into a religion and are creating false idols.

Um, my church won't be participating.

TNJim Friday, November 13th at 3:17AM EST (link)

Our bell is fo calls to worship God, not some farce. We’re not members of the WCC anyway. We ring ours still every Sunday, usually it’s one of the kids, but sometimes it’s me!

penguin2, as usual you state it more concisely . . .

mailloux Friday, November 13th at 4:38PM EST (link)

and therefore better than the post you are commenting on!

The violation of the first commandment explains a whole lot.

Thanks for visiting my diary, commenting, and the reco too!

mailloux, I couldn't possibly state or explain things as well...

penguin2 Friday, November 13th at 5:10PM EST (link)

as you do. You have the wonderful ability to not only bring information to us, but aid in the comprehension, interpretation and application of it. In other words, you help us make sense of things, when some days seem to be utterly without it.

I’m sure there are many at RS who appreciate you in the same way.

The WCC needs to be reminded

redpens Thursday, November 12th at 3:55PM EST (link)

of their purpose. I think we Redstaters should each send them e-mails
all with the 1st Commandment on them.

redpens, yours is a very good idea . . .

mailloux Friday, November 13th at 4:39PM EST (link)

I think I will do exactly what you are suggesting. Thank You!

ROFL World Council of Churches

348 churches in 110 countries…

If I did not want to admit I was that irrelevant, I might do stupid stunts to get media attention to.

“You can call yourself a Republican, but if you’ve lost the support of Fred Thompson, you are an unholy thing that will be destroyed by a rain of fire.” -IMAO

Hooah_Mac, as you say, it is a stupid stunt . . .

mailloux Friday, November 13th at 4:50PM EST (link)

It, unfortunately, encompasses more than is indicated by the 348 churches. For example, one member church is the “Lutheran Church in Hungary”, which actually has 300 parishes!

The stupidity here, I’m afraid, is downright viral.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Take Care, mailloux

I didn't phrase that well

Hooah_Mac Friday, November 13th at 8:16PM EST (link)

I understand the size of the organization, but they are still irrelevant. I remember reading about the American church representatives in this organization writing a letter begging forgiveness for how evil U.S. foreign policy is, and seeing the people bringing the letter admitting that they hadn’t really asked their parishioners and that they would likely be criticized for it.

The WCC does not actually represent the member churches, anymore than the AARP represents senior citizens or the UN represents citizens of member countries.

It is just a bunch of irrelevant idiots funded by people who have no idea what they are funding.

Hooah_Mac, I see what you are saying . . .

mailloux Friday, November 13th at 11:49PM EST (link)

And, you make an incredibly good point. The people in the pews often do differ from the leadership. I now understand what you were getting at with your comment about the irrelevancy of the WCC . . . and I think you’re spot on.

People will die from "noise pollution" instead. nt

frighteningly similar to what’s being taught on college campuses these days (I work for a mid-sized public, masters level institution). Yikes, folks are getting it from the churches and from higher education as well!

Thanks for the additional information!

CO2 can reach 500 ppm without consequence, maybe we should ring the bells for H2O concentration as well...

DONTREADONME Friday, November 13th at 9:41PM EST (link)

If we reach 500-600 ppm watch what happens to crop yeilds and plant growth. Also watch humans prosper under higher levels as well if the temperature rises a degree or two. That is my prediction, we have heard that 350 ppm is the normal but the Soviets in 1972 measured 375 ppm in their atmospheric measurements, so what the heck is going on? I like the Soviets method for measuring atmospheric CO2 and they did it at higher elevations.

Interesting...Dec. 13 is my birthday....

When that day arrives, I know I’m a year closer to my death!

Thank you for reminding me of my mortality. Sigh…. ;)

Perhaps if they spent their time helping the poor...

JadedByPolitics Saturday, November 14th at 2:02PM EST (link)

and downtrodden instead of WASTING their time ringing bells there would NOT be as many poor and downtrodden. I laugh when churches wonder WHY there pews are empty, it is directly related to the stupidity they engage in on a constant basis.

My church won't be participating!!!

From ME to You Monday, November 16th at 11:39AM EST (link)

Mainly because we don’t have bells!

Church bells were used to call the faithful to worship because back then no one had timepieces and the only way to alert them over long distances was to ring a bell!

WE believe that
(1) since we have published times of worship
(2) most people own at least one timepiece
(3) most people know how to interpret said timepiece
(hard to prove considering how many people arrive 20 minutes late (public school graduates??))
there is no need to ring bells!

Besides, considering we have members who drive over 30 miles to attend services we would need some VERY loud bells!! :-))
